I don't want to start a gun war, but when you have to spend upwards of $3k to have a reliable 1911, I would say the platform has been relagated to the hands of a few.
A Porsche 911 GT3 isn't cheap, either, relegating it to the hands of the few. What's your point?
Anyhow, gotta go clean my Springfield Professional. You know how those finicky match-grade 1911s are...

The Coal Creek Armory custom 1911 I took to AFHF in 2010:
416
I did pretty good on walk-back drills in that class. I may be a mediocre shot, but a pistol that will shoot under an inch at 25 yards with a "glass rod" trigger that breaks under four pounds will make you look okay when all the really good shots around you are shooting striker-fired plastic duty guns.
Still and all, though, I'm toting an M&P9F these days, partly due to mag capacity issues and partly due to the fact that a "glass rod" trigger that breaks under four pounds is hard for me to manage while shooting on the move or on a press-out. If you could guarantee me that the bad guys would come at me one by one and would stand still while I was shooting at them, I'd probably still be packing a 1911...

Another Wilson, a CQB-E 10mm/40S&W combo gun. I got this so I could shoot inexpensive ammo that would reliably work the 1911 platform (the 9 is a little light for a full size 5" gun).

Next to a Brown SF.
Tamara - NHCs have a lighter than I'd like trigger reset. I like a 5lb trigger pull on my carry 1911s and a good stiff thumb safety.

Sadly, I've recently sold the first two. The plane Jane CQB is currently the only 1911 I have.
Tam ... I grew a couple of miles away from Coal Creek Armory. Of course, it wasn't in existance then. I shot there over Christmas while we were back home visiting.

Here are my custom-spec'ed Nighthawk Talon II and SIGARMS GSR XO (which has been gone through and set up by the SIG Custom Shop). We also have a 1911A1 1945 Remington Rand.
Great guns, and I enjoy and admire a 1911, but I'll normally carry, compete and train with a Glock.
Best, Jon

Colt Series 80 Enhanced in .38 Super with much the same mods as the Delta Elite above. Except for the sights... Much as I hate the "surface-mount" Novaks, I hate grinding on and rebluing a pretty Colt slide even more. (I did, however, have the front sight hole hogged out to take a .125" tenon.) Yeah, it was a "Barbecue Gun". :o
445
5" Springfield Lightweight. Ed Brown sear & disconnect, STI polycarbonate & titanium trigger, nylon MSH from a Kimber, titanium mainspring cap... For a 5" 1911, this thing was freaky light. Ran good, but recoil was beastie for a full-size gun with full-house defensive loads. Carried nicely, though.

I guarantee you that there are more hard use 1911s on this site than one would guess from an initial glance. This includes 1911s carried in the line of duty by some of S.M.E and LEO members. More so, due to the fact that membership of this site is well aware of contemporary performance standards set by Glocks and HKs and is generally free of brand- and type-specific fanboyism, I would hazard a guess that there are more well-built, proven-reliable, hard-used 1911s here than on any other website.
And, while 70K tests are admirable and important, 3800 MRBS is an excellent performance that, I believe, exceeds a factory guarantee for any modern pistol out there.
Good answer. I have some 1911s that have been road hard and put away wet including a Concept 8 (stainless 4.25") Les Baer that made it through an AFHF without an issue.
http://home.comcast.net/~train2live/1911/baerc8_1.jpg
Built using quality parts and a little maintenance they will run. Not sure if they would make 50K plus rounds the way Todd runs his guns but he is a rare species. :D

And my winter project, a Colt 9mm Commander upper and parts on a botched frame from an unknown source:
http://home.comcast.net/~train2live/1911/9mmColt1small.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~train2live/1911/9mmColt2small.jpg
When I get done it will have a new frame, longer solid trigger, 10-8 NM sights, beavertail, and the nickel plating will be long gone.
Tam, beautiful guns and photos.
Also, I had the same benchmade auto for almost 2 years. Good knife.

Not that I was thinking about mailing you one, but this pair of Colts (one .45, one a 9mm) run just fine for me. I wouldn't dismiss the New Agent / Defender platform out of hand. Or out of two hands.

It is not his. Looking at shadows on the ground, most would think that somebody is holding a timer. Alternatively, it could be that somebody is holding a gun to Todd's head forcing him to shoot a 1911. Only few know the true answer.

This is a full-house gun done by David Sams. Pics were done for the original owner by Jim Keeney.
I am not the first owner, so it comes with FCS. Other than that, it is divine, as it is both accurate (1.47" ten-shot group at fifty yards from the Ransom Rest) and reliable. It is a PPC gun, but I would not hesitate to carry it once I replaced the snake wood grips with the G10 grips that also accompanied it. It is chambered in 9x19. With the tungsten FLGR, muzzle rise is as close to nil as can be imagined.
I need to run it through the 2,000-round challenge.

My one and only 1911 is a Rock Island Armory tactical model that was part of a group buy at the other gun forum I hang out on. While the fit and finish isn't up there with most of the other guns I've seen in this thread, it's fun to shoot, and pretty accurate. Plus I got a great price on it.

A Springfield V-10 from back before I knew better than to buy bitty little chopped-down "1911s". STI trigger, Wilson beavertail (kinda mandatory on a factory Springer because of the contour on the frame, else I'd have used a Brown,) the tallest aftermarket rear sight we could find because the thing shot crazy low @ 7 yds right out of the box, Navidrex contoured grip panels... I think I got it back in '01 and wound up trading it for a PC627 in '03 or '04.
I'll also note that I still thought hex-head grip screws were cool, apparently. Boy, it's like seeing a kiddie picture with birthday cake smeared on your face... :o
I also have an itty bitty Defender, (in case I actually get around to trying to get my CCW) but who wants to see that unreliable piece of junk. ;) (it has actually been utterly reliable for me)
This '70 is much more fun to look at. Love this pistol, even though Blocks are better. :p Pics aren't great, did 'em kinda quick, but you get the idea.
I didn't pay much for it, it was retired from a PD, and I've put ~7000 rounds through it since I've had it.
So far, I've done all the work myself. It may got to a smith for slide to frame fit and barrel.
EGW extractor and .203" slide stop, firing pin stop
NM tight match bushing and barrel crown
Millet sights, old skool arched checkered MSH
Medium plastic Colt trigger (it's lightweight and comfortable), STIs are ooogly. Trigger job = clean 3#.
Grip safety dehorn
Marvel disco rail cut
Disconnector clearanced for rounds in magwell
Rail and recoil spring tunnel dehorned and polished as well as feed ramp, breechface, ouside of barrel, inside of slide, etc...and lots more to go, next is slightly extended mag release.
Mainly slide to frame fit and clean up and refinish...maybe. It's starting to feel like a higher end 1911, it just doesn't look like one.

CT Brian is a 1911 pro that builds officer's size 1911s more often than most it seems. I emailed him when I got it and asked what I should change or watch out for. He said change the entire recoil assy every ???? rounds and shoot it, Defenders run, and I have run into that theme elsewhere. I think they have improved the Officer size.

I built my own 1911. I know what your thinking, a custom bubba kitchen table build. It took me almost a year but I only used premium parts and took my time. I had a lot of help from some pro's on the 1911 forum. I then sent the gun to long time top tier 1911 smith Chuck Warner and asked him to put some finishing touches on the gun (stuff I can't do) and to check my work and give me a report card to to speak. He checked the gun over and gave me a passing score. The gun was actually safe. Got the gun back from Chuck and now it's my baby. It was a learning experience and I learned a ton about the 1911.

Officer's-size guns are more reliable than generally given credit for, although even the good ones eat recoil springs like popcorn.
It's the sub-Officer's 3" guns like the Kimber Ultra and Springer Micro and the ridiculous P10/Warthog-size guns from Painted Ordnance that I wouldn't bet on. I have literally never seen one of the little Paras that would run worth a darn.

It's the sub-Officer's 3" guns like the Kimber Ultra and Springer Micro and the ridiculous P10/Warthog-size guns from Painted Ordnance that I wouldn't bet on. I have literally never seen one of the little Paras that would run worth a darn.
Oh, 1911 picture:

Tam, what's with the hammer on that gun all the way to the left?

Tam, what's with the hammer on that gun all the way to the left?
The gun on the far left is an Argentine Sistema from the last batch that came through what's-their-faces in Louisiana, the ones that raised a stink because they'd been advertised as "NRA Very Good" and were actually "NRA Look Like They Came Off A U-Boat Wreck". We had pre-ordered, like, a dozen of them at CCA, and I felt guilty so I bought the worst-looking one to use as my own 1911 for 'sperimentin' on.
The hammer is spurless because it's part of the Cylinder & Slide "Warp Speed" lockwork; with the Dlask trigger, the gun has about a 3# pull. It's the first trigger job I ever did myself from start to finish. Since the hammer is spurless, I ground down the tang on the frame and grip safety.

Thanks!
Welcome.
(I also really like the spurless hammer for the incredible scope in smart-arse responses it offers for when people ask "Well, how do you de-cock it?" :D )

With the decocker inside the trigger guard. It's noisy, but it works every ninth time like clockwork.

I guess I'll use this thread to quit lurking.
From the left, a late 1918 mfg (black army) in original condition, an early 1918 that was apparently rebuilt (rebarrelled, later grips), my son's Kimber, a Randall LeMay model, and a Para Carry (as Tamara said " wouldn't run worth a darn") model that was sold to finance a Kahr P45.
Great thread BTW

blr, what's the idea behind checkering the underside of the trigger guard?
Officially - it is to help locate the gun in your hand, assisting in proper grip.
In reality - just another place to checker, thus driving up cost. It's like the checkering behind the action on a Winchester M21. Just for looks.

Man, that gun w/ 20lpi checkering and the VZ diamonds was absolutely stuck in your hands. Some of the bowling pin guys I shot with would pour Elmers glue on their hands to improve grip. It wouldn't help with that guy. AND it would give you some righteous callouses in short order.

Mrs. SC's new carry gun-
Custom built Caspian based 9mm "CCO" (4.25" commander slide on an officer frame) that a guy had built but hardly fired. John Harrison fit Kart barrel, Wilson bulletproof slide stop, Nowlin ignition parts, and a few other goodies. We will probably change out the thumb safety to a Wilson for easier use. The gun shoots like a dream and is a neat little package for concealed carry.

I didn't have the proper tools to fit the TechWell mag well I got for my Trojan, so I ended up with a set of nasty looking grip panels... This weekend I had a chance to replace them. I dumped the TechWell for now, but I'm sure I'll get a low profile mag well later on. Anyway, I had some Desert Ironwood laying around that I hadn't managed to put on a knife yet, so I scavenged.

blr- that is a good looking gun. Nice and simple without a lot of frills. Who built it?
I was going through some old photos today and came across this one. Springfield 9mm that I purchased 7-8 years ago. I bought it mainly as a fun gun but it has done really well in the hands of ladies and younger people who wanted to try a lower recoiling 1911.

Those are nice guns - I have one that was converted into a 9x23.
RE: The Colt - that is a product of the Colt Custom Shop. It started life out as a stainless S80 gun, and was modified by the CS as per the "Tactical Package." As such, it was made by Ritchie. As a side note, the CCS will be adding some pistolsmiths over the next year. And the wait has gone from about 6 months to 1 year now.
In fact, that particular gun is, was, the gun Colt took to gun shows (like SHOT) to display their Custom Shop work and is lettered as such. It's unreal how nice that package is. It's two tone Cerakote, 20lpi (90 degree diamonds - as it should be) with the nicked corners carry bevel. I much prefer that to the full bevel as seen by Wilson Combat.
My only complaint with it is that it does not have a NM barrel :(
This will be my primary gun for upcoming Gunsite and US Training classes. I cannot remember who here gave the tumbs up to UST, but they were absolutely right. It's first rate and then some. One of the top 3 IMHO.

Oh yeah, I know that.... in your first few pictures of the TSG the cut didn't appear to be quite to normal depth. (must have been the angle of the shot, plus lighting or something, it just didn't look like their normal carry cut). I wondered if you'd ordered some weird "half-depth" carry cut or something...
Personally I'm not a fan of Carry Cuts, but that's the great thing about 1911's... you can customize them the way YOU want them. That's still a beautiful piece, for sure!

Gotcha (was a little thrown by the question, I figured you knew...).
To be honest, I'm not much of a fan either. They populate less than 10% of my 1911s, but I figure I needed a few with, and I like these more than some.

As I'd mentioned some months ago, I have a 1968 Colt LWC that I'd asked Steve Morrison of MARS Armament to do some work on. The gun was reliable (to a 200 round test) and the trigger acceptable, but I had a desire to have a 'retro' looking LWC. While my motivations were largely aesthetic the piece was intended for carry. The only significant issues with the pistol were a nasty set of MGW sights that had been stuck on by a previous owner, and a bad match of the slide to the frame at the rear.
I asked Mr. Morrison to get that trued up, which would involve both blending the slide and fitting a new barrel (since that match is driven by the engagement of the slide through the barrel's link). I asked him to mount a National Match style rear sight and a tritium front; gently dehorn the grip safety and tangs; high cut and matte the front strap and matte a flat MSH to match; black oxide the slide, and hard chrome the frame.
Mr. Morrison communicated very well throughout the project, often just calling to check in. He had two concerns during the completion of the gun. First, he had deep-seated apprehension regarding the hard chrome; it sounded like a recent run of bad luck with his plater. We discussed several options, but in the end decided that at least temporarily we would go with a 'tungsten' gray cerakote. I'm quite happy with the result. While it's not perfectly retro looking, it's attractive in an industrial sort of way, and practical.
Second, he was very concerned about what is probably an original factory defect -- the frame's port side, in the area of the mainspring housing, is not a straight line; if you look carefully at the attached picture, you can see that the MSH exposes itself in a taper. He discussed ways to fix this but I declined to pursue them, given the cosmetic nature of the issue.
The pistol was delivered with ample warning in an amount of time I considered perfectly reasonable. I could not be happier with his customer service -- it was simply a great gunsmith experience.
Lockup is very tight; if eased forward, the gun does not go into battery. Today I put 100 rounds of WWB hardball through it, and experienced a single FTF; I'm quite sure that after a detail clean and relube the gun will easily pass a 2000 round challenge. However.... either I'm a pansy all of a sudden, or it's extremely foolish to attempt to run a .45 LWC without a beavertail safety. Mr. Morrison had a gentle hand on the grip safety, but I think even if it was much more aggressively rounded it would have cut me. This is just not going to be a 200 round per session gun, or a gun I would take to a class. Without the beavertail, recoil is sharper and harder to control, and it's significantly more challenging to establish a good grip on the gun in the holster. It probably slowed my draw by 0.8 seconds, and it for sure impacted splits. Plus, it hurt, which wasn't any fun.
I waited until after I'd cut up my hand before attempting to shoot it for groups, so I won't report those since I'm pretty sure the gun will do better. I only attempted to feed the gun ball (the aforementioned WWB, 20 rounds of ASYM Match HB, and 15 rounds of PPU) and some match 185 SWC loads, federal gold match and Winchester. Those were miserable failures -- the gun absoultely will not feed them, neither as the first round nor the second. I will have to try LSWC reloads and hollowpoints later. If it doesn't feed those, I'm sure MARS will make it right; I'm not too worried either way.
In short, I have a pistol that I consider intensely aesthetically pleasing (in other words fly), that can probably be carried with a good degree of confidence. However, it slows me down (versus my size-equivalent .38S LWC or my similar though heavier P35); it hurts to much to practice enough with (a very J frame problem); and I will never be as fast or accurate with it as a minor caliber gun.
It is time for me to take another serious look at the current vogue for 9x19 plastic pistols. I will work with Curiosity a few more times, but when funds become available I am likely to pick up either a P30 or G19 and spend a year getting comfortable with it.

I don't want to get all high-n-mighty shooting-professional on you, but using a 10mm 1911 to clear a stuck bullet in a BHP is not a good idea.

No no no! That's the biggest advantage of steel framed pistols - when you need a hammer, it's right there!!!
No, Todd's right. You should have used a /smaller/ caliber to shoot the stuck bullet out of the P35 barrel.
Wait, do they make smaller calibers?

Put 200 rounds of Blazer through it this AM, trying to scare the storm away.
Ran fine for me, but one of the RO's at the local range ran his high thumbs so high along the slide, it malfunctioned literally, 10 out of 10 attempts. It was quite comical. Handed to the other RO, ran great. Back to me, ran great. To the GF's 12 year old...........ran great.
It has all of the blast of a .357 Magnum, but is no more difficult to manage than a .45.
It is a beast of a gun, heavier than any other pistol I own, and probably heavier than two Glocks. But it is reliable, shoots a major caliber cartridge, sights I can see, and a trigger I can manage. Hmmmmmmm......seems to me someone who knows more about pistol shooting than I do came up with a criteria similar to that.
As for the why...............why not? I have 4 other .357's so ammo is not an issue. I didn't have a 1911 chambered in .357. And the whole "Spend that money on ammo and training" philosophy doesn't work with my schedule right now.

It's f------ awesome.
Yeah, it is kind of. The only downside is that sooner or later I will have to start to reload for it. I have about 3k rounds of .357 left over from days gone by, but since this one goes through ammo faster than my SA Revolvers, I suspect the stash will decline rapidly. Plus it is fun to shoot. Once I get a few more spare mags and a mag pouch for it, I'll run it for some steel challenge games, and/or in Limited 10 Major. Pretty sure it will make major.

That Ruger looks great. As much as i have tried with all my heart to not like the Ruger 1911, I have been impressed with every example that I shot over the last year. I have begun recommending them over Kimber's and other entry level 1911 platforms. I can't wait to see the build sheet on the one pictured.

Fit and finish is typical Brown - good but lacking "soul," or whatever. I'm somewhat put out, as the grips are no longer nice cocobolo and they are not hand checkered either.

Havent decided to keep them yet, likely wont. Other pursuits need funding.
Fit and finish is typical Brown - good but lacking "soul," or whatever. I'm somewhat put out, as the grips are no longer nice cocobolo and they are not hand checkered either.
These kind of leave me luke warm.
PS....Bill I hate you :D
Nice blasters, wish I had the same problems.

My well-used CQB. I grew up with 1911s, and had my fair share of issues with reliability, maintenance, etc. The Wilson just seems to ignore all that. I change the recoil springs every 5K rounds, and lube it periodically. It gobbles everything I feed it, from WWB ball to 200gr +p Cor-Bon 'flying ashtrays'. I've retired it as my carry and IDPA gun in favor of the Beretta, but it still holds a place in my heart. Speaking of which, I need to pull it out and shoot a match with it one of these days.

Mr Rogers, that is an excellent pistol, thank you for posting the photos. I love an "elegantly efficient" 1911.
If you have a moment, could you tell me what finish you used on it? I have an old pre-70's Series Colt I'm thinking about having some work done on.
Thank you again, and have a good weekend.

Plans include high cut and checkered front strap, all hard edges broken. Ed Brown grip safety with all the height I can get on the grip. Most of the inside bits are on hand...WC Bulletproof. Novak sights.
Frame and slide are originally a norinco, maybe ten years old. Steel is good and the holes are in the right places. Good base material, IMO. Needs a lot of work to make it nice, though.

A Tripp 10mm mag coated. It is amazing just how slick this coating is. I admit, I was very skeptical when I was asked to coat mags thinking the benefit just wouldn't be there. Coated mags feed soooo smoothly, it is wonderful.

Yes, the coating will wear and scratch the top layer. Under the top/self lubricating layer, there is a high phos (10-11%) adhesion/anti corrosion layer

Clearly.
I got suckered into shooting a match a couple years back. So I took this colt out. I shot this stage to completion, went to unload and clear, and the slide came off in my hands. I look down and my slide stop is in the dirt. I pick it up, slap it back in, and finish the other stages. Upon inspection of the pistol the next week, I could not find anything out of spec. It's been as good as ever.
My buddy coincidentally snapped a pic of me finishing up this stage (notice the slide stop hole):

Today was short, 100 rounds. The drill was the Triple Nickel (5 targets, 5 yards, 5sec).
Needless to say, I didn't break 5 seconds.

That's Colt CCG Serial number 440, it's had over 10,000 rounds through it so far. After the 2013 shooting season, it had some serious issues with surface rust, so I sent it off to the rad bros at H&M Metal to get their black nitride coating applied to it. It's now back and looks better than it did when it was brand new. It's being carried stylishly by my pet T-Rex, Salvatore Wiggins III.

Its a bit retro, made in '14. It came to me as something of a project, it had been rusted and pitted, but someone had done a pretty good job of hand polishing out most of the pits, and kept the edges and stamping clean and sharp. I finished it with the rest of the correct parts it needed. The tiny original front sight disappeared, as did the next couple that a 'smith installed. It now has a dovetail front. I also ditched the wide spur hammer and short grip safety, they both bit me too much to enjoy shooting it. I haven't shot it on paper much, but after getting the sights squared away and trigger pull down to a decent level, it will bang the 24" plate @ 300 yards often enough to be fun. Hoping it will feed the Lyman 452424 for a useful field load. I had it blued a year or so ago, its been in the white most of the time I've had it.

Thanks for the kind thoughts of giving a poor old gun a good home, but I'll probably hang on to it. I've had sellers remorse several times. Once was a 1911 made in '17, and another was a National Match made in the 60's that had an Ace kit with it. The guy that bought the National Match wont sell it back for some reason.
Getting close to a month of inactivity here....
