JAD, love the spec, but please don't paint that beauty
theJanitor I think this was a Hoag gun. Look at the grip safety. I bought this used and it had a Colt long trigger and Colt Ambi safety. I liked the way the sights are buried. I had Steve Woods install a Swenson ambi, install a short Videcki trigger, and dehorn the Bomar. Later I had a Barsto barrel installed and even later, I had it painted with Birdsong Black-T. Yes, I had it painted, but I actually like it that way. :).

As far as I know, no one makes a grip safety like that any more. I miss those days. Nice find, sir.

Thank you Jfpatch.
theJanitor, Yes, he has not worked on guns in a while. :) I used to live in driving distance to him when he was building guns and visited him many times. You and I have similar taste in 1911's. I like dehorned commander hammers and King's safeties, too. My favorite 1911's have a basic carry package like your Garthwaite pistol but without checkering.

Fit a Wilson 6BN BP "Tactical" thumb safety tonight. Not sure what makes it tactical, it's much smaller and lower profile than most. Anyway, the blueing doesn't quite match, but it's a big improvement over the Baer TS.

This gun I wanted to stay with the theme of a gun that looks mostly stock but has a little more horsepower under the hood. A few refinements that fix what I viewed as the guns shortcomings.
From Colt, the gun had a tiny thumb safety, the rear sight was shit and the gun itself was not as accurate as I wanted due to a combination of loose barrel to bushing fit and overcut lower lugs. It wouldn't group any weight bullet for shit and I got better distance accuracy from my gen 2 G19.
I had an Ed Brown thumb safety from some bygone project so that went in first. Afterwards, the replacement rear sight, a U notch from 10-8. I actually kinda like how it works with the front white dot so I think I'll hold off on sending it to be dovetailed. On a different note...that factory rear was a total bastard to get out. Tried heating it, freezing it, putting it in a vice and whaling on it with a hammer...nothing worked. I had to (Carefully) saw it in half with a Dremel cutoff wheel to remove it
And lastly (and most expensive) a replacement barrel from Ed Brown to correct the accuracy problem. Test firing was promising and the gun is far and away improved from factory. A trigger job is probably in order at some point but I'm not terribly sensitive to trigger pull and I figure a few thousand rounds is a better (and more fun) option.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170504/2f85c09868427103f512294ead142712.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170504/6dc673f767431a5169a8367c8228c464.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170504/afaf437b81506bcda5f7e00903d742a8.jpg

Nice. Do I spot some Harrison parts on that pistol?
Serpico1985
05-29-2017, 06:04 AM
Thanks guys.
Roger that Robinson. The slide stop, hammer and rear sight are Harrison parts. I wanted to keep the look retro-ish which is why I went with the Harrison rear sight. My uncle has problems see plain sights well so I went with the Fiber optic front. The grip safety is the EGW .245" that gets re-shaped and the thumb safety is Ed Brown.
I will say this in reference to the Harrison slide stop. I naturally have a high hold on most guns which often interferes with the slide stop. It's never been a problem on 1911's before but with this Harrison slide stop I was preventing the slide from locking back quite a few times. I also noticed a not insignificant irritation to my support hand palm from the slide stop during firing. I adjusted my grip and all these problems went away immediately. I think the Harrison part looks amazing and for the vast majority of shooters would be a non-issue. But if you use a high support hand hold you may want to go with a more traditional profiled slide stop. Just my $0.02.
I can't say enough about the Chen maxbevel mainspring housing. It's phenomenal. I had a few different test fire sessions with this gun to work out some feeding kinks and the combination of the mainspring housing and opened up magwell was noticeable in terms of reload consistency for me. I'll never not use this part for future builds.

A quick check revealed that Brian is doing full house builds only.
Jardine is running VALTRO USA, so I suspect he's not working at a bench anymore.
The rest didn't have any notices on their sites indicating that they're not taking on work, so a call would be necessary to verify I suppose.

Looks pretty nice Damon. If you're comfortable wrenching on it, you can get a tenon staking tool and a 10-8 or Harrison rear. A little bit of shade tree gunsmithing is never a bad thing as long as you know what to do.
Who to send it to depends on a whether you want a full house build. I think at the termination of my largest student loan, I'm going to get a full house build done by Jeremy Reid. I like the dudes style...and also that he's a hardcore USPSA shooter, so he knows how to build a gun that'll hold up.

Extended thumb safety

Black Walnut grips from Woodcaliber.com arrived today. Really impressed with them, extremely quick shipping, and packaging was outstanding. Highly recommended. Also tried some VZ Slex grip screws, which are hard to see here, but they're a combination of hex and slotted. Neat idea, but I think I'll grab some more traditional regular slotted screws from Wilson tonight on an order I need to finish up.
I'll have to get some better pics later.

A quick kitchen lighting shot after installing a 10-8 rear sight last night. That thing took some serious filing. I've heard this about 10-8 sights, but never experienced it with my Glocks, M&Ps, or P30.
I normally use nylon punches and a vice, but decided to try THIS (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B016R4DXJW/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&psc=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=pistolforum-20&linkId=49e73183b4b0e10f6de912c5fb1347a0) relatively inexpensive sight pusher from amazon, and it worked great. haha. Thanks. Yes, unfortunately they won't time without the use of O-rings, and I didn't bother hunting mine down last night after finishing the bushing swap. The first three came out pretty easily, only one required heating to defeat the small amount of red loctite, but the last one, of course the last one, was soaked in loctite and took considerable work to remove. Using a soldering iron to heat the last bushing...

Friend dropped this off to have me verify POI. He said it was impacting low, but my results were polar opposite. At 10 yds I was an inch high, at 18 yds 1-3/4, and 45 yds on a steel plate, I was about 4 inches high. On the 7" plate I went 3/3 and was holding level sights at the bottom edge. Very interesting gun from Novak's shop. Doing some Googling, it has the "answer" one piece backstrap installed, which eliminates the grip safety. Talk about kicking a hornet' s nest.......

Blurred my face, but here's how I repped my filthy-from-shooting Colt O1091: with bacon and a red napkin for the apple pie fresh from the oven matching my blue and white shirt.
Normally I rock thick cut bacon from a local butcher in plain white paper, but I figured the packaged stuff would photograph better.

I couldn't agree more with every word you said. Fit and finish are excellent, and I was surprised how sharp the checkering is. Outstanding quality at a downright cheap price relative to many other wood stock's I looked at before purchasing. You're right on the first 2. That's the OEM Colt mag release. Not too many mods - mostly to suit preferences rather than needs.
EGW custom bushing, Wilson BP ejector, Colt arched MS Housing, normal bushings and screws. The Colt extractor hook was dressed and a bit more tension was added. (as a reloader I like my brass to land in the same spot )
I did use a few Harrison parts: Medium trigger (my new favorite), Oversized firing pin stop, Stainless hammer and TR Sear.

My Colt running 500-600 over 4-5 range trips, 4 different types of ammo, out of the box without being cleaned or lubricated, has totally changed my perception of 1911s after years of forum reading. I get that's not a huge number by P-F standards but it's better than my P226 .40 or M&P .40 did. I think I've made this post a billion times, but it still makes me happy that a good one seems to run as well as anything else. And they shoot so. Darn. Well.

The P14 was an early model and was built in the beginning of USPSA Limited and the P16 was also an early model as USPSA Limited became dominated by 40. The STI is the most accurate pistol I own with a KART match barrel and Briley bushing in a bushing. The STI is also the ugliest gun I own with a "spray on" finish that has come off over the decades - I choose to leave it as-is and just shoot it.

It was okay. Shooting a 9mm 1911 was a lot of fun. I couldn't shoot it very well though. Struggled with accuracy. I really don't think it was all me as other people tested it and struggled too.
I was at the point where I was going to send it to my favorite 1911 smith and spend a bunch of money or cash it in and try something else. I made the mistake of putting a lot of rounds through and full custom with all Nighthawk parts and it was all over for the Sig.
I rediscovered how much fun it is to shoot 45 acp out of an all steel gun. The Loaded dropped into my lap for cheap and I couldn't pass it up. It's fit together really well and easy to shoot accurately.

Never an issue, always reliable and accurate.

Very happy that I went to the 9mm Range Officer Champion as another 1911. It too has run flawless with just about all ammunition choices.
Springer LB Operator (freshly cleaned, 835 rds from last cleaning) and the Sams gun.

Note two things:
A few wild shots even at those time stds.
And the giant ragged hole is mostly from the shooting from retention muzzle blast. Not from driving slugs that close. Unlike someone else's target. ;)17944

So what is the LAPD SWAT Qual?
Darryl Bolke gave me this. Notice the last sentence about DQ's. Hope this helps.
Modified LAPD SWAT Pistol Qualification Drill
Range: 3 to 25 yds
Target: 8” circle for body; 3x5 card for head.
Start position: concealed or duty retention holster
Rounds fired: 36 or 50
25 yds: 2 body under 4 sec--3x
15 yds: 2 body under 3 sec--3x
10 yds: 2 body then 1 head under 3.5 sec--2x
7 yds: 2 body then 1 head under 3 sec--2x
5 yds: 2 body then 1 head under 2.5 sec--2x
3 yds: 2 body then 1 head under 2 sec--2x
Bonus movement drill if you are not restricted by asinine nanny rules from moving on your range while shooting:
10 yards to 3 yards while on the move: 6 body then 1 head under 5 sec--2x
(Note that this means shooting while actually moving, NOT taking a few shots in a static position before moving, then stopping to take some more shots midway, then making the final shot while stopped at 3 yds—any shots taken while not moving are considered a miss)
This is intended to be shot from the holster. If you must shoot from the ready, as a result of your crappy range’s stupid policies, reduce allowable time by 1 sec for each drill. Any round totally off the target is an automatic DQ (ie. 100% hits required to pass).

Yeah, theJanitor has done the same for (to?) me, that is, inspiring me to move out of semi-customs into customs. That's not in the cards just yet, as I've spent nearly 7k on two semi-customs in the last 10 months already. That said, I'm also on Jim's list and my slot should be coming up relatively soon. When I got on his list early in the year, I planned on sending him my TRS to make it a one of a kind. I'm not sure if I'll actually send it off at this point, as it's my understanding he's more interested in doing full house builds than fluffing right now. When my number is up, I'll have a conversation with him about it.
Looking forward to hearing more about this 9mm Commander build.

StraitR, a Trs and another semi is a helluva year.
As far as salaries go, I make squat. I had a little money from selling things a few years ago and did a semi retro build. Then I sent it back for the rest of the work a couple years later. So the money was split up.
This is my only 1911. No way I can afford another for years to come.

She started life as a 1918 'black army' M1911, that was an NRA purchase by someone somewhere.
Sometime in the 1970's it was hardchromed, and made into a bullseye gun that shoots 185 grain lead like a guided missile. she rattles, is loose, but she'll stay the same.

Quality over quantity, you're doing it right.
I paid for the first last August by selling years worth of collected, unused guns and a good deal of other stuff in my safe. I decided to move away from SFA AIWB, so I had three glocks and a bunch of support gear to sell as well. I actually sold way more stuff than I needed to, and put the extra towards debt and the family. The TRS was bought outright in April, but I recently sold my Brig Tac which I consider partial late payment. All in all, I'm in the black when it comes to money spent on my 1911's. I would have never bought them otherwise, since excessively expensive gun purchases are pretty much on the bottom of my priorities list.

His 1911's make mine look amateurish.
And I think there's this huge misconception that I have this huge 1911 collection. I've actually divested myself of alot of them over the past couple years for not insignificant money. I started moving them a bit before I had my vision issues one year ago. Since then, I haven't really been able to shoot, and I've spent what little gun budget I have on my 4 year old. I have the requisite couple of glocks and a nice AR, so 1911's are Passion-of-the-Gun guns. But I'd spend every last dime on making memories with him and the wife over any of this stuff.
That being said, I do have two colt on gunbroker.....

So if I wanted to do a heirloom gun for my boy, who would is end it to? Thinking series 80 Colt (plan on carrying it to give it meaning) and feel more comfortable with the series 80 for appendix. This is a few years down the road because I'm experimenting with glock for the foreseeable future so I have time to save. Thanks all.

If it was my gun and I wanted a classic-style build I would probably send it to one of the following:
Heirloom Precision (Jason Burton)
John Harrison
Evolution Armory
Evolution Armory is still making a name for themselves so may be more affordable but they do nice work.
The Colt Custom Shop does great work but they take a long time and are not currently taking new orders.

One half of the His/Hers full house custom builds from Chris James at Combat Precision Technologies. Inching ever closer to completion of the matching pair, differing only in caliber.
Can't wait to get these two into the stable.
Looking great Mr. Smith. :)

breakingtime, if you're planning on some of these makers, get on their list now. they MIGHT call you in three years. Also, It's good to have the base gun already in hand. SOme of them want the gun now, even though they won't touch it for awhile. and some might surprise you with a call, and say, "I'm ready, where's your pistol?"
Robinson's list is good. Selecting your smith takes work and research, but most of the big names will do you right.
ETA: Evolution is doing stellar work right now.

This could lead to arguments :-), but for what you seem to be asking for, you're talking about a gunsmith where "if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it". Ok, I'm exagerrating but it can feel that way when you see the final price.
Jim Garthwaite (http://www.garthwaite.com/)
Jason Burton at the appropriately named Heirloom Precision (http://www.heirloomprecision.com/)
John Harrison (http://www.harrisoncustom.com/)
Chuck Rogers if you may want something that doesn't necessarily follow the classic lines but is just as wonderful (http://www.rogersprecision.com/)
Stan Chen (http://www.chencustom.com/6naosc1ggzr1twquz9pmdk3vwymz6c)
Ned Christiensen for something that won't be like any other 1911 out there (http://www.m-guns.com/). Somewhere on this site I posted photos of a railed 1911 I have, that he created essentially.
Check their gallery page to see what their style is like since none of them interpret the work (at least esthetically) the same way.

That's a sweet Wilson. I was just telling theJanitor the other day that I wish Wilson offered their wood grips without medallions. They sure do make some nice looking grips, and I would have happily put a set on my TRS.
Don't get me wrong, your Garthwaite commander will be ultra drool worthy. haha. Blued Government models just tickle my fancy the most, speaking purely about aesthetics. I carry a Commander(ish) daily myself, and it's not even blued. I carry it constantly and like not worrying about the armor-tuff finish. Just doesn't look as nice as blueing, but probably more forgiving here in the thick Florida humidity for a daily driver.

It's one of those Korth PTS roller-delayed blowback sort-of 1911s.
It's interesting, and in my opinion perfect for anyone who would spend big money on an anvil provided it had an ingenious electrohydraulic system to ensure that the flat surface of the anvil could be pivoted to replicate a rounded surface, thereby making the inclusion of a rounded surface unnecessary, the only downside being that it needs seven special service tools, but that's not a big deal because you can have the manufacturer of the anvil complete the annual service at their own facility in Skwarhedde.
If that sounds like an awesome upgrade to a blacksmith's anvil to you, definitely get the Korth.

Great build, and love the naked slide. As much as I like the shooting characteristics of the 4" bull barrel, the traditional commander definitely looks better, IMO.

Took it to the range this afternoon. I shot 150 rounds of 124 grain FMJ, and 50 rounds of 124 grain HST. Accuracy, function, etc. were all what you'd expect from Wilson. Easy and fun to shoot.
I did have a failure to feed in the second magazine of HST. I'm nearly positive it was from my thumbs rubbing against the slide too much during recoil, but it was frustrating regardless. It didn't happen anymore after that one time.
I normally like Straight 8-style sights, but this one has a plain black rear and a tritium front. That combination seems very fast, and I'll probably stick with it.
http://i.imgur.com/FCKIvTk.jpg
I've spent the last year dedicated to the Glock 19 for both on and off duty, for a variety of reasons. However, I've been thinking about switching back to the 1911, mainly because I'm required by policy to carry a railed 1911 for SWAT, and I don't particularly like switching back between the two. So, after I get enough rounds through this one, I'll probably end up carrying it for my normal, plainclothes on-duty work and off-duty.

Only two small issues with the gun that bug me a little but I'm hoping they can be cleaned up by a smith. One is a reassembly scratch that was pre-existing and the other is below. The slide stop notch is a little rough on both sides, more so toward the rear of the slide. There's some gouging/deformation there that I'm hoping isn't too significant to repair or re-cut and blend back to match the rest of the slide. Looks like it's from it being put into slide lock with a weak mag spring and poor engagement to the slide. Frustrating because this thing is in pretty damn good shape otherwise.

I'll have one of those some day. Are those stock sights?
Omigerd yes! I dawdled on deciding on sights and suddenly, he was done. So he came up with the plan to check POI on a B8 at 25 yds. If it was too far off he'd measure and mill down a correct front. So last Friday driving home from work he called me to tell me we lucked out. 25 yard POI with a 6:00 hold was all shots in the B8 X ring. I was like, get me a Powerball!
He then was waiting awhile for the sun to get lower before checking 50 yard results. Waat? That is how he is about everything.

Lol! True. But it's like going back in time to old school sights. Only my eyes are not going back to where they used to be.
Novak's and 10-8 fiber front sights look like they'd protect the tube a little better. If I really wanted an FO front it might be worth looking into.
I use the 10 - 8 sights on my carry Walther 99.
The front sight is built very well and seems that it would resist abuse.

At only 500 some rounds I would wonder about either rod quality or installation error. My ameriglo fiber sight has over 10,000 rounds and still going and that sight leaves the rod almost completely exposed. My 10-8 performance fiber guns are about half that round count and no issues.
M2CattleCo
08-29-2017, 08:46 PM
Definitely an installation error or a bad piece of rod.
I've had fiber rods go for years of very high volume shooting on USPSA guns.
The key is to melt it in right.
Put the rod through the sight.
I take a fingernail file and square up the end of the rod, maybe not necessary, but I have good results. I think it makes the rod form a stronger ball when you melt it.
Melt the end of the rod, but don't let the flame touch the rod. When you have a little ball on the rod, gently pull it into the recess. This makes a perfect fit and helps to hold the rod securely.
Cut the other end about 1/16" from the sight. File the end square.
Melt the rod again with indirect heat. When the rod melts it should pull itself tight in the sight. This can a take a little trial and error to gt the cut length just right, not all fibers melt/shrink the same.
When the rod is tight in the recessed hole on the serrated side, and pulled tight across the span of the sight, it's not going anywhere for a loong time.
10-8 makes the best fiber optic front IMO. It's longer than most and uses a bigger rod. They also have a rib in the middle to protect the rod. Great sights.

1997 Kimber Custom Classic that I carried to Thunder Ranch back in 1998. (Took a G19, too, of course.) In 2001 I had Robar change out any MIM parts, new springs and coated with NP3. Heinie Ledge sights, VZ G10 grips and an S&A magwell ride on it today. I genuinely don't know the round count of this pistol as it was a loaner in my little tribe that has been to several pistol classes and countless matches in that role. It's mainly a safe queen these days as pretty much anyone I know that's worth talking to runs a Glock these days. ;)
