View Full Version : Any known M&P .40 accuracy (or other) issues?

Through PF I've become aware of the persistent accuracy troubles that plague the M&P9. I have one of the early .40s, and it's been great. I shoot the M&P better than any other pistol I've tried, so I was thinking I might like to have another one. Do currently produced M&P .40's have accuracy problems, too? Any other flaws?

I own an M&P9 and carried an M&P40 for a year as an armed guard.

I never noticed and accuracy problems with the 9 and was able to qualify as an expert 3 times with the 40. I've not had any issues with either gun but the recoil on the 40 is noticeably stouter than the 9.

The M&P platform is generally regarded as very .40S&W friendly. There are a ton of agencies using it, and I've not heard of persistent issues.

Having said that, I bet that some would take exception to the term "persistent" when describing the 9mm accuracy issues. Most would say that the days of poor M&P9 accuracy are behind S&W. I'm sure there are some still hanging on to that line, but...

The M&P full-size .40 is very well vetted in large numbers across many agencies for a good span of years now. It is generally considered to be the best designed caliber of the full-size M&P pistols, and one of the top designs in .40 S&W. Like the Beretta PX4, Sig P229, and HK P2000/P30, the design for .40 S&W from step one really shows in minimal wear or breakage issues.

If you were going to get a .40 S&W, the M&P is a top choice and will serve you well.

My source: A few DocGKR posts and posts by other SMEs as well as reports from issuing agencies. Notable to me was that Detroit PD (definitely a high-risk agency) re-upped with M&P 40s after a number of years using the design. That's where my M&P comes from and while I don't shoot it a lot because I don't shoot the M&P trigger design very well, I have had no complaints.

As a nice bonus, a drop-in .357 SIG factory barrel is less than $100 and uses the same magazines.

My department issued the M&P 40 from Fall 2008 to Winter 2017. The only real issues we had were rust on slides with some of the first guns issued and some broken right-side slide stops. The M&P in 40 S&W is an absolute fantastic gun and in my opinion the best gun for that particular caliber.

We switched to the M&P 9 (not 2.0) this past winter. So far no issues with those and accuracy has been fine.

It sounds weird, but I actually like my old M&P 40 better, although it was not my carry gun.

Those were good replies (ie, I was told me what I wanted to hear). I'll be taking home a 2.0 here soon. Thanks.

To be clear, I do not have experience with the 2.0 variant am not sure how they have been holding up.

Several co-workers who really like the .40SW bought M&Ps when the Glock 22s went away. They are happy with them and no obvious issues. The one I had for a year or so did not exhibit the flyers oft reported for the 9mms.

The M&P 40 is one of the few pistols I do not dislike shooting the .40 in. In my view it is an extremely good pistol, and the .40 is nice to have for some applications.

When I post my M&P 40 for sale I'm going to link to this thread. Nothing wrong with the gun, but a P2000 is my EDC and 9mm 1911s for competition. Should be able to get a good price in California for a very lightly used sample. Can't buy the 2.0 M&Ps in this hell hole of a state.
