Week 238: 666 Drill

Results may be posted until November 13th, 2017.

Range: 6 yards
Target: USPSA Metric or IDPA
Start Position: Facing downrange, hands at sides
Rounds Fired: 6

Start facing downrange with holstered handgun loaded with 1-5 rounds (shooter's choice.) At the start signal, draw and shoot six rounds (the shooter must perform a slidelock reload and resume firing to complete the required six shots.)

Scoring: Your score is your time, plus 1 second for each C/-1 zone hit, plus 3 seconds for each D/-3 zone hit, and plus 5 seconds for each miss. A/-0 zone hits have no penalty. The goal is to shoot the drill clean and under 6 seconds.

Here is Larry Vickers shooting the 666 drill (starts at 1:35):

Is an 8" paper plate a good alternative for this drill?

Sounds good to me!

Equipment: Gen5 G19 w/Ameriglo night sights(orange front), “FBI” mag catch, reload a 17 mag. Safariland ALS holster(“FBI” low cut)
I elected to have a coworker load mags “blind”. So, two rounds, then four after the reload.
Unconcealed on IDPA target, no highlight(paper plate, etc.)
Results: 5.97 seconds, clean.
Notes: this is a stock trigger, and one of the best I’ve worked in a long time. I had been teaching basics, and defaulted to an overhand slide release on the reload. Almost certainly faster with a slide stop release, but I’ll take this!
Ammo: 147 gr. Winchester fmj.

Equipment used: G19-5, Dark Star Gear AIWB holster, concealed under a button front shirt, IDPA target
[b]Raw time I ran this four times:
Somewhere around 6s clean (timer malfunctioned), 5.69s (-1), 5.2s clean, 5.16s clean, 5.19s clean
Penalties the previously mentioned -1 on the second string
Anything you noticed I shot this with a coworker who was using a G26-4 he had stippled. We loaded each other’s magazines so we wouldn’t know how many rounds were in each. I consistently finished almost a second ahead of him each time. I think that was due to his large hands slowing down his reloads with the tiny glock. I didn’t notice any issues shooting this besides my normal slow draws.

Equipment used:
Sig SP2022 9mm with Trijicon HD sights (orange front)
Winchester 115gr FMJ
JRC CDA-1 (I think?) AIWB holster with Mastermind Tactics wedge
JMCK single AIWB mag pouch

Target: IDPA

Concealment: short sleeve button down shirt, buttoned

Raw time: used a phone app for a par timer, totally screwed up the reload, so I have no idea. Maybe 8 seconds? 9?

Penalties: 1 (I drew boxes around the hits on the target for this drill)

Total score: 9? 10?

What I noticed: So what happened on this one was I screwed up the reload. I neglected to get a proper firing grip coming out of the holster, which not only made me fling a bullet into the -1 area but also put my thumb over the Sig's slide release. So even though I knew, 100%, that I would fire three rounds and reload, I fired three and surprise! The slide wasn't locked back. My brain went "Huh?oh crap that's rightRELOADNOW!" Thus, the resulting failing time and penalty.

Equipment used: G17 MOS w/DPP USPSA gear, USPSA target
Raw time : 5.07 (1.42 draw, 2.43 reload)
Penalties : Clean
Total score : 5.07
Anything you noticed: Well I noticed my time wasn't great, largely to to lack of work on slide lock reloads lately. There are plenty of people who do a FAST drill faster than that, so I tried the drill a number of more times coming up with a best of 4.61. I then ran the FAST in a time of 5.65. The slide lock reloads are definitely slower with my gamer gun than my EDC. My EDC G19 has a Spaulding Bullets Forward slide release which works much better being left handed but is not legal in Carry Optics.

My buddy Chris from Glock texted me Friday and said to do the DOW. I mentioned it to Gabe, and he said it didn’t happen without video, so the stars aligned to shoot it this afternoon, with my wife to video. Interesting how video ups the pressure.

Out of the gate, I was at 3.53 clean, and worked it down to 3.34. I really wanted to break 3 flat, and it took a few attempts pushing to do that clean. Here was my best, 2.97 (.77, .19, 1.35, .22, .24, .20). Walther Q5 with iron sights out of my Production rig.

Thank you for the video. I must have watched 20 times studying your draw and reload. Great stuff and something I aspire too.

Hard to follow a performance by GJM, but wanted to shoot it concealed at lunchtime. Result: 5.79, +1 for a “C” at about 8 o’clock, just outside the “0” on an IDPA target. Had 5 rounds left of Winchester 147 fmj, so did the “Wizard”; overtime at 7 yard head shot @2.67
:(
Gen5 G19, Ameriglo orange front, Safariland ALS holster, concealed by windbreaker jacket.
Notes: going through work on concealment draw for confidence, and release slide by slide stop for speed.
I will probably do this multiple times, as it covers a good deal.

All the low hanging fruit in this drill is draw and reload, since the difference in splits is hardly enough to matter, and carries accuracy penalty time risk.

4.20 clean 1.49, .24, .20, 1.80, .24, .23 - 6A's

Since my first official run was clean and a passing run i figured I'd burn a few runs trying to really push and see what i could do. Next run was a 4.03 raw but with 2 C's bringing it to 6.03. Then i had a horrible run where my hand skipped off the cover garment and smashed my chin. I was seeing stars a but managed to still draw the gun only to f up the reload. I hate the gen 4 release and this was why. I didn't shift my grip enough so the mag didn't drop, resulting in a 3.54 reload. At that point i knew it was over so i finished sho. Raw was 7.3 but with 2 C's making it a 9.3. Then i had a 4.13 clean. Following were a 3.97 with 2 c's and a final run of 3.79 with a c. At this point i was on the ragged edge of my ability to move at this speed and felt i was slipping with my fundamentals so i stopped here. It is fun to shoot this close and seeing what you can do when the gas is floored.

Equipment used: CZ P10C, concealed under a polo shirt in a Crossbreed SnapSlide at 4 o'clock. Rangemaster 2017Q target (8" inner ring)
Raw time : Ran 4 times 5.80, 5.38, 5.11, 4.22
Penalties : 1 (last run +1 sec)
Anything you noticed: Second range outing for CZ P10 and first time from holster. Index is jacked so shooting low and left, but grouping OK and easy recoil control. Pushing harder with each run, hence 1 sec penalty on the last one. Expecting to level out around 4.5 after some dry fire work (I hope). Really digging the trigger and grip on this thing. Hope it's not recalled like the last gun I invested a bunch of time and money in. :(

Shot this three times with the 34 today. Did not shoot it cold. This is the first time I’ve worked live fire with the 34 from concealment.

Run 1
Glock 34 Gen 4
Striker control device, Vogel Sights, 13# recoil spring
Keepers AIWB holster
Raven Copia mag pouch
Concealed under t-shirt
USPSA target
5.30
+1 just out left
6.30 total

Didn’t get a clean grip out of the holster and never really recovered.

Run 2
5.09 clean
Fumbled the reload

4.41 clean
Good run. Tracked the sights and reload was clean.

Need to work draws as they were pretty slow. I added a thicker wedge today and the grip was pressed a lot tighter to me than I’m used to. I think I’m going to like this as it keeps pistol locked in place so draws should be more consistent in the long run.

Shot it once with the 19.4 just because. All stock except for Defoor rear sight and Dawson tritium front.
5.14
+1 high and slightly left
6.14

I was not going to post this because I am still working on equipping myself properly with a mag carrier, but during PFestivus I did comment on people not participating in the DOTW. I think these threads are some of the most important portions of Pistol Forum.

M9 Beretta- 6/6 total time of 9.38, including fishing a magazine out of my pocket for 5.13 seconds
PX4 Storm- 6/6 total time of 8.00, including 4.77 seconds on my reload.

I really liked the TDA from these Berettas, but will use my training journal for those comments.

I got to the range for a short session this afternoon, and was mostly working 25 yards with the Q5 and iron sights — groups to the head, draws to the head, and pairs to the lower A zone. I then grabbed my Q5 with the DP Pro, shot some steel, draws to the head at 25, and then got the bright idea I would try the 6/6/6 drill. I figured I would be slow after all the 25 yard shooting, but definitely accurate. My first run surprised me, at 2.96 raw, but unfortunately with two C hits. The times were (.81, .18, 1.33, .23, .21, .20) so I was wrong on the speed and accuracy prediction. Notice the piss poor lack of follow through on the sixth shot. Here is the run:

https://youtu.be/gfhPDRAOJYg

After that, it took me some time to sort out the difference shooting the red dot on that particular drill. With iron sights, and the close target, I was getting a lot of steering information from the slide. With the red dot, I needed to rely on just the dot, and that took different focus than the slide.

Once I settled down, I shot clean runs of 3.55, 3.33 and 3.17. This gave me the idea I need to do more short distance dot shooting, to burn in the close target technique, since so much of my dot practice is on hard targets.

Ran this twice today.
Gen 4 Glock 17, Safariland ALS, no concealment
I worked on dry reloads a couple mornings this week and it’s paying off. Reloads still weren’t blazing, but were under 2 sec live, which is an improvement for me. Draws were in the 1.4’s. Again, not blazing, but not super slow.

Steadily closing the gap between GJM and myself. A few more years......
Today I wanted to do a bit better on this drill than earlier......plus I bought a mag carrier.........yesterday.......and wasn't thinking during dinner........had two beers.........then didn't dry fire with said mag carrier.....I am pathetic.......
PX4CC w/crappy $10 Galco holster (waiting on my JMCK AIWB)
2.01, .40, 3.68 mag change, .49, .42, .35 total of 7.35 @ 7 yards 6 out of 6 hits

I have to practice on reloading my pistol. Drills like this are a challenge as I am still working on basics- i.e- Dot Torture @ 3 yards, Bill Drills in under 4.00 seconds. Another fun drill and glad to have my times documented for the next time it rolls around.

First run of this was clean in 5.28. I shot it with the 9mm Operator from an OWB under an open vest. I did brain cramp and shot it from 7 yards. Will give this one a go again soon. I shot it once more and really crushed the reload but so fast I didn't finish re-establishing my grip and threw a few shots out of the A zone and I didn't score it being seized with self loathing and disgust.

Beretta 92, AIWB, t-shirt - USPSA A zone.

Shot this 4 times, all clean. Had some issues grabbing my shirt on a couple of the reloads.

- 3.70 sec (1.10, 0.20, 1.81, 0.21, 0.19, 0.19)

Penalties 1
Total score 6.94- best time. Shot three times overall- with penalties- 6.56 (1 miss), 6.94 (1 miss), 7.73 (2 miss)
Anything you noticed- Yes- draw times improvement- best draw was at 1.85. Two mag changes under 3.00 seconds. Getting quicker overall- accuracy went a tad backward- but still pretty happy.

Much better than my first iteration doing this drill. I am happy with the PX4CC- really good drill.

Great- posting right below Mr_White and his 3.26, lol.

First ran this a few weeks ago on 10/21 range trip.

Shot a G19 from concealment with an AIWB holster and reload. Target was a B8 center with black being the ideal target, but counting anything vertically on the sheet of paper above/below the black as "in" to replicate A zone.

Run 1: 4.91 + 1C = 5.91
Run 2: 7.16 clean, but fumbled reload which led to a long time
Run 3: Ran 5.45 clean

21602

Overall performed sort of meh on the 3 runs. Felt like times were generous, but felt like I dropped shot when I shouldn't have, and had slow draws and sloppy reloads. I do feel like I made better use of the full 6 seconds on the latter runs compared to the first one where I left about a second on the table. Biggest takeaway was to work reloads

Ran this drill a second time on 11/11. Again used a G19 from concealment, with holster and reload AIWB.

Goal was to shoot sights and make use of the time without going too fast or too slow.

Run 1 = 6.63 seconds clean - slow reload
Run 2 = 6.39 seconds clean - slow reload again
Run 3 = 5.10 seconds clean - finally calmed down on the reload and made the time
Run 4 = 5.06 seconds clean - took a video of this run. Had a slower reload but made the time anyways. Had to be conscious not to shoot to fast so as to make sure I didn't throw a shot and shoot my phone lol.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWlXst5_yqk

Biggest takeaway from that video is I need to tactical turtle less and try to not move my head down as much.
