Week 237: Bills at 25

Results may be posted until November 6th, 2018.

Designed by: Gabe White
Range: 25 yards
Target: USPSA Metric or IDPA
Start Position: Facing downrange, hands hanging naturally
Rounds Fired: 36

For this drill of the week, we'll shoot the classic Bill Drill, but at 25 yards. This distance is very demanding, especially of trigger manipulation.

Start facing downrange with handgun loaded with at least six rounds and holstered, hands hanging naturally. Upon start signal, draw and engage the target with six rounds. Repeat until you have fired six Bill Drills (36 total rounds.) Record your time and hits for each Bill Drill. If you cannot draw from the holster, start in ready position of your choice and note it in your results.

Figure out your adjusted score for each Bill Drill. Your score is your time, plus: .5 seconds for each B/C/-1 zone hit, 1.5 seconds per D/-3 zone hit, and 5 seconds per miss. Add up your adjusted scores for all six Bill Drills to determine your Total Score.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Equipment used: gun, holster, concealment (if any), USPSA Metric or IDPA target
Time, hits, and adjusted score for each Bill Drill
Total score
Observations: anything you noticed

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

I knew trouble was coming after that awesome performance in your journal! Dotw will be the death of me yet, or at least of my sanity.

The trouble is really for me. I did so well on those couple of highlight Bill Drills but that's well into the land of inconsistent performance for me. I really don't expect six of those kind of runs in reshooting for the DotW... ;)

Equipment used:G19-5 concealed AIWB in a Darkstar Gear Orion under a buttoned front shirt. Shooting at an IDPA target

7.79s 3(-0) 2(-1) 1(-3) = 10.29s
6.73 3(-0) 3(-1) = 9.73s
5.71 4(-1) 1(-3) 1 miss = 14.21s
7.41 4(-0) 3(-1) = 8.91s (yes I accidentally fired an extra round)
6.82 1(-0) 5(-1) = 9.32s
6.78 2(-0) 3(-1) 1(-3) = 9.78

Total score 62.24s
Observations:

I’m even worse at shooting quickly at 25y than I am at 25y slow fire. My grip from the draw still isn’t as solid as it needs to be. I I’m starting from the ready I can really crank down in advance and make sure I’m gripping with my pinky which is something I’m still working on doing from the draw. I’ve found I start tensing the pinky as I press the trigger otherwise which sends shots low. When I can crank down in advance, I do better.

**Edit** I shot this cold today, right out of the truck

Observations - I really dug this drill! I hadn't done bill drills of any sort in quite a long time and 25 yard bill drills in a few years (back then I hardly had the skill to reliably hit the target at 25, let alone the A zone). My head game got the best of me a bit. The first string felt a bit effortless, I didn't really push too hard but just shot for A's. I was over confident and pushed ever so slightly on the second string but was a bit loose with my grip/trigger control and shot my worst string. So naturally I was went the other way and shot too slow and careful rather than just shooting the sights and took extra long on every shot during the third string. At that point I realized that I could just go at my natural pace and let the sights/trigger dictate the time and let it happen. This resulted in two solid runs, though not clean, for the fourth and fifth runs. On the sixth run I had been thinking about really pushing hard after this run was over just to see what I could do but it apparently manifested during the run, though with shit hits. I shot faster than I could get solid hits and pulled 4 c's. It's funny how just thinking about what I was going to try and do after the last run was over, so it wouldn't ruin my recorded performance, ended up happening subconsciously during the run. I totally intended on just having a mediocre run like the others and instead just blazed away. I think I could actually push harder and do a sub 4 but it would be gargabe/luck and maybe do more harm than good. I think I will revisit this for the next few range sessions and push hard then dial back and repeat just to see where I can take it. Also I would like to see what I can do about trying to shoot it clean. Probably my favorite dotw since the micro fast! Good job Mr. White!!

p.s. sometimes I feel like Mr. White and the rest of us aren't even playing the same sport...after shooting this in person those times in your journal are wicked dude!

5.31 5A 1D = 6.81
5.18 2A 4C = 7.18

4.77 6A = 4.77

Total adjusted time 36.49 seconds

While the dot still slows me down inside 7 yards, it is great for this type of thing. I got a little loose on a couple of strings and should have went faster on all of them. 4 seconds is doable I'm sure.

Somehow I missed the 6 reps part and only shot it 3 times. Raw and penalties in pic below.
Gear: Gen 4 Glock 17, Safariland ALS, no concealment.
Observations: the faster I go the more I drop. Everything dropped was low, so I need to work on working the trigger quickly and correctly.
