Week 236: Gunsite 250 "School Drill"

Results may be posted until October 29th, 2017.

Range: 3-25 yards
Target: IDPA (or any silhouette target with an 8" circle in the body and a 4" circle, or similar, in the head)
Start Position: Holstered, hands at sides
Rounds Fired: 10

This is the skills test in Gunsite's famous 250 class. Thanks to Kevin B. for the suggestion!

Set up one IDPA target (or other silhouette targets with an 8" circle in the body, and a 4" circle or similar in the head.) Shots inside the 8" and 4" circle score 5 points. Shots on the target but outside the 8" circle score 2 points. Shots that are specified to the head must be in the 4" circle (head shots outside the 4" circle score 0 points.) Overtime shots count as misses and score no points. There are 50 possible points. The entire test is shot from the holster. If you cannot safely contend with the times demanded while drawing from the holster, or are not allowed to start from the holster due to range rules, then start from ready instead and note it when you report your results.

Procedure:

String 1: 3 yards, 1 shot to the head, 1.5 seconds

String 2: 3 yards, 1 shot to the head, 1.5 seconds (repeat of String 1)

String 3: 7 yards, 2 shots to the body, 1.5 seconds

String 4: 10 yards, 2 shots to the body, 2 seconds

String 5: 15 yards, start standing, drop to kneeling, 2 shots to the body, 3.5 seconds

String 6: 25 yards, start standing, drop to prone, 2 shots to the body, 7 seconds

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Equipment used (pistol, holster, optional concealment garment if one was used)
Total number of points out of the possible 50
Anything you noticed

G17 MOS DPP, USPSA gear.

String 1) 1.5 seconds
String 2) 1.53 (overtime so -5)
String 3) 1.49
String 4) 2.18 (overtime -5)
String 5) 2.65
String 6) 5.35

40 points.

So these were tough par times for me to make with the RDS gun, especially the close ones. I shot this with someone other than my usual training partner. He was using an iron sight gun and had pretty much opposite results from me. He had no problems with the close stages, but had a number of -3 shots as the distance increased.

It's been 25 years since I shot the 250 School Drill at Gunsite and I don't think I've ever really shot it much since. Anyhow, I made two runs at it with my LCP, starting with my hand on the gun in my front pocket. I also shot the 25 yard stage Standing instead of Prone.

Attempt #1 (Marked in BLUE):

1.23 sec & 1.33 sec (clean)
1.58 sec (-5 for being over)
2.45 sec (clean)
5.80 sec (-2)
Total Score: 43 points

Attempt #2 (Marked in RED):

1.47 sec & 1.30 sec (clean)
1.44 sec (clean)
1.83 sec (clean)
2.53 sec (-1)
4.19 sec (-4)

Total Score: 45 points

I could have made better use of the time allowed but it is what it is.

Ooooops, didn't read the scoring instructions close enough. Target scores should be 44 pts and 41 pts.

Holy smokes that's hard! For me, two alphas in 1.5 at 7 yards proved undoable. Always one over time. After scoring I worked reps of D2 in 1.5 and I could shoot it clean on the USPSA A zone, but not in a IDPA 8" circle. When I pushed the speed to make 1.5, I'd have one outside low.

9mm Operator, OWB open carried - 39 score. Dropping points and one shot over time from the 7 yard stage. I warmed up for that too.

Shot a 29 on it with a G43.

This is quite a nice compact 10 round diagnostic test.

Some of these time standards are tough. I also can’t get two hits at 7 in under 1.5s. I tried this twice. The hits from the first attempt are marked with one hash mark and the hits from the second are marked with two.

Glock 19-5 concealed AIWB. Anything in the 8 ring or the 3x5 was 5 pts.
0/5 1.58s over time
5/5 1.37s
5/10 1.61s one round over time
7/10 1.77 one body shot landed in the head
10/10 2.57s
10/10 unknown time. First shot was 4.98s. Second shot didn’t record.
Total 37/50

5/5 1.32s
5/5 1.37s
5/10 1.61s second shot over time
7/10 1.76s
7/10 3.06s
4/10 5.25s
Total 33/50

Gen 4 G17, OWB, Safailand ALS. As others have said, these times are tight!

First run was cold, I went over time a bunch. Also, my timer didn’t pick up the prone shots, but I heard the par beep before I broke my second shot.

21168

Second run immediately followed the first and wasn’t much better. I shot the 15 and 25 standing this time.

21169

Then I worked some reps at 7 and 10 to try and get them under time. 7 got pretty good. 10 still needs work.

21170

I’m in awe of some of you. Thanks Gabe for posting this up!

I dunno how kneeling and prone can be less accurate than standing; but it's "a thing".
