Time for the very fun Triple Nickel again!

Week 235: Triple Nickel

Results may be posted until October 22nd, 2017.

Designed by: the Federal Air Marshal firearms training unit
Range: 5 yards
Target: see below
Start Position: from concealment or a duty/retention holster
Rounds Fired: 10

Targets can be (a) the 4/5 zone of a Transtar II, (b) the bottle of a QIT target, (c) the A/B/C zones of a USPSA Metric target, or (d) the -0 and -1 zones of an IDPA target. Any bullet strike completely within the designated area counts as a hit; any strike that touches the line or falls outside the designated area counts as a miss. There must be at least 18" between each target.

Shooter begins facing the target, hands at sides, gun in holster loaded with no more than nine rounds (shooter chooses to load anywhere between one and nine rounds). On the buzzer, draw and fire exactly two shots at each of the five targets. Shooter will need to perform a reload to accomplish this.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Start position (concealed or duty)
Time
Number of hits
Make and model of gun and holster

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Which target? (A previous version I read specified that shooter must face middle target, but you are not as specific.)

Are we doing this with a slide lock reload? (Asking because of the specified amount of ammo in the gun.) Or is it shooters choice?

The GJM RAW SPEED Test! Its a fun burner! You're a daisy if you hit 5.0 or better!

I've always faced the center target while waiting for the start signal. I know the reload is the shooter's choice. I've always liked doing a slidelock reload, but I know other reloads are allowed too. I think the speed reload is a popular one on the Triple Nickel. You could also do a tactical reload, though it would be a big time disadvantage on the drill, and seems outside of its proper context to me.

Definitely a fast and fun test, that's for sure.

For GJM though, I think we'd need to make it all CNS shots rather than C-zones. It would be more like the Hackathorn Head Shot Standards, but probably with a 1.5 second par or something like that lol.

First run - 5.19

1.39, .24, .28, .19, .25, .17, .27, .17, 1.99, .24

All the hits were inside the a/c scoring area but I was over time. I haven't been this close before so I decided that I was going to shoot it a few more times to see if I could make it. My next two runs were a 5.13 and a 5.85. The 5.85 run was a clusterfuck, where I had a bad draw and even experienced trigger freeze on a transition and one of the hits touched the c/d line resulting in a miss. I didn't record the numbers for these other than raw time since only the first run counted for the dotw for me. On the fourth run I managed a 4.97 - 1.40, .24, .28, .18, .28, .17, .29, .16, 1.77, .20 and with good hits. A solid draw and good reload time helped me just barely squeak in. The hits were solid as well. There were quite a few places that I could improve though, even on the good run I stumbled coming off of the reload and my hand was a bit more forward than it should have been, with my support hand index finger in front of the trigger guard. On two of the initial runs I used my support hand thumb to drop the slide after the reload, something I don't really practice especially with glocks. It just automatically happened when my gun hand thumb wasn't ready to release the slide. I found it odd as I've been a slide stop pre loader for as long as I can remember, when viable anyway but seemed to default to the other way when it wasn't where it needed to be. Another cool thing about today was that I had another person at the range so I actually got it on video. I am pretty self conscious but I think I'll try and upload it down below. Normally I shoot alone and just take a few pictures but after having them run the timer for the first run I tought to just run the timer off of my belt and have them stand back with my phone and record. The angle sucks but you can see the shooting anyway. Overall it was a fun day! I'll try to upload the video in the post below this one. Directly below are the hits from the 5.85 run(note the c/d line hit on the draw) and the 4.97.

Here is the rest of my session. I had not shot this in about five years, and once I went to the trouble to set up five targets, I decided to see what I could learn.

Next two runs were 3.92 and 3.97. Those were all with the Q5 and iron sights. Then I went Q5/DP Pro and got a 3.74. I started thinking about body mechanics, and decided to try shooting two, and using the time of the reload to move my body more to the center/left side of the array. That actually worked, and I got a 3.61 with iron sights (.67, .18, 1.18, .22, .25, .19, .25, .21, .24, .22). I couldn't pull one faster, so then I decided to try the same drill, but all heads. Clean, I went 5.20, 5.22, 4.99, 4.91 and then with the optic, I did a 4.78 (1.07, .25, 1.53, .31, .29, .26, .29, .25, .28, .25). I decided to run some 7 yard Bill drills to finish up, and had a 1.81, some 1.70's clean, and finally a 1.68 clean.

I was initially resistant to do this DOW as it seemed course in scoring, and close, but I think it helped me see faster. I recommend it.

GJM,

were you running this from uspsa gear or out of a concealed "George" aiwb? Either way, excellent work!

Well I am embarrassed to put mine up after the other ones here, but I will anyway.

G17 MOS w DPP
USPSA Carry Optics gear.
Best run 5.63 8A's, 2C's (1.29, .23,.30,.23,.29,.22,.30,.23,.36,.2.19)

Before I went to the range I loaded 3 mags with a random number of rounds 9 or below and then didn't pay any attention to which ones I put in to start the string. As expected the reloads were my biggest problem. My other 2 runs were 6.31 and 6.26 with reloads of 2.79 and 2.67.
