I’ve been into Beretta’s since I saw one in Lethal Weapon and have been buying them since my first one at 21... I will never understand why Beretta does what it does. Though I think losing the m9 contract was the best thing that could happen. Now there are more than the 92fs and m9 available.

Beretta’s managing of their 92 variants is just puzzling.
I will never understand why Beretta does what it does.
My casual diagnosis is that Beretta has a schizophrenic disorder, with strategic vision for the sidearm business vascillating between the Italian and US personalities over the years.

It was there as of 30 mins ago. For me, it doesn’t do anything my BrigTac doesn’t. If I were looking TODAY, I would probably grab the CenTac over the BrigTac, though.

Right. Considering the big circle that is the Beretta 92 family tree, I've always wondered what the lineup would look like had Beretta standardized around the Vertec slide when it was introduced in 2001 instead of dropping it in 2009. Would we even have the 92A1? The M9A3 introduction in 2015 was really "back to the future".
While I agree the Vertec slide would have been the way to go, we probably still would have had the 92A1, because Beretta probably wanted a .40 S&W launcher on the platform and needed the buffer, etc. from the 90-Two in the 96A1. The 92A1 just tagged along with the 96A1, adding a 9mm version of their only 92/96 gun in .40 S&W.

Meh. I'm not convinced the 96A1 design accomplished anything that the introduction of the Brigadier slide in 1993 (at the request of the Border Patrol) and the standardization of the slanted dust cover frame across the lineup did not. If the 96A1 was the answer to the .40 problem in the 92 lineup, Beretta sure took their time to figure it out...(~17 years...)

Well, the 96A1 (and 92A1) was really just the heir to the 90-Two. The 90-Two was probably the answer to the .40 S&W problem (though I suspect Beretta really believed the PX4 was the .40S&W answer, but nobody wanted it), and the 92A1/96A1 was the answer to the bad marketing and odd-ball grip that was the 90-Two.

Yes, the 92A1 descended from the 90-TWO. The 90-TWO was introduced in 2006? So 13 years after the Brig? Five years after the Vertec? To my knowledge, neither the 90-TWO or 92A1 was produced in the US. This is exactly my point about Beretta USA and Beretta Italy pursuing different paths at various points in 92 development. The Vertec team wanted to address the .40 issue years before the arrival of the 90-TWO but couldn't generate corporate support.
The Vertec was really Beretta USA's attempt to recapture their dwindling share of the US LE market. It was the first Beretta to incorporate an accessory rail (I believe using Glock's rail dimensions). It had a more ergonomic grip and dovetailed sights. It was available in D/F/G configurations. But Beretta never really pushed it (until they revived it as the M9A3) because of competing internal priorities (as you mentioned, the PX4) and corporate politics.
Todd made a few comments on the Vertec over the years that touched on the USA-Italy issues...
The Vertec was killed off in large part because the group that developed it (led by me, tyvm) ran roughshod over the product manager to get it done. First chance he got, he pulled it from the system. The reasoning was that it required enough different machining to be too inefficient. In fairness, I'm in no position to say. It's also no coincidence that the Vertec and Compacts were direct competitors to the Cougar and then PX4 in terms of size, and Italy was pushing heavily to make the roto-guns more popular.
It was "my" project. The LE sales staff was tired of hearing the same old complaints over and over from agencies, so we set out to:
decrease trigger reach
add a light rail
make the front sight removable
keep the overall gun as small and light as possible
improve some of the ergos/shootability
The straight backstrap was the brain child of Tom Valdrose, the BUSA's production manager at the time. He called me into his office one day and literally said, "Close your eyes, I'm going to put something in your hand and I want you to tell me if you like it."
One of the problems with the Vertec was that it came with the short trigger installed. This worked great for someone with short fingers (like me) but folks with longer fingers found they got a lot of trigger bite. It was an important lesson for me -- and an expensive one for Beretta -- just because it works great for me doesn't mean it's ideal for the market.
The other issue we wanted to address with the Vertec was the .40 reliability/durability issue that had plagued the 96-series since the beginning, but it was determined that solving that would cost too much money and in light of the then-upcoming PX4 pistol line, it was seen as a waste. Unfortunately, that was another death knell for the Vertec because it was primarily marketed toward law enforcement agencies and as we all know, agencies in the U.S. predominantly want .40-cal pistols.
As I've stated before, I really don't have any antipathy for the 92A1 as a firearm. I think it and the 90-TWO are emblematic though of Beretta's past corporate disfunction and internal competitions. The Vertec couldn't get support for the .40 improvements in 2000 because of the pending PX4 rollout but Beretta hires a sports car designer to make the 90-TWO five years later?
I think the 92A1 is enjoying some success right now because the Italian production line has remained open while the Beretta USA move to Tennessee has disrupted the availability of many in-demand US specific models (notably the M9A3 and the Langdon Special).
I've joked before that I just prefer to live in an alternate timeline where the Elites and Vertecs were never discontinued, the 90-Two never existed, and the M9A3 was offered as an Engineering Change to the Army in 2005.
Thankfully guys like Ernest Langdon and Bill Wilson have Beretta's ear these days. We've been seeing some great stuff lately.
i'm late to the 92 game, in terms of all the flavors, but aside from the front sight, what is the difference between a plain old 92F slide and a 92 Vertec slide?

The dovetailed front sight is really the crux of the difference between a standard 92/M9 slide and the Vertec. Arguably the Vertec slides preserves some holster compatibility, as it is the same dimensions as the standard 92 slide, whereas the other dovetailed 92 slides (the Brigadier, the 90-TWO, and 92A1) are dimensionally different. However, considering the great diversity of Beretta frames, I'm not sure this is really any practical advantage.
thank you.
so my Cent-Tac will fit into my existing 92F holster. sweet. or if i want to get a new holster, just look for one that fits a 92 with a rail.
JSGlock34
11-26-2017, 04:23 PM
Well, maybe. It's the frame of the CenTac which would cause an existing 92F holster compatibility issues, not the slide.
The CenTac is truly a number of features that have never been rolled together in a Beretta before. It probably requires - and deserves - a dedicated holster.
Incidentally, I noticed that 5 Shot Leather (https://www.facebook.com/5ShotLeatherLLC/) was teasing a special release for Wilson Combat. I see the BrigTac in the back; perhaps a CenTac version is coming too?
https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/22860020_1548519628561398_9040318221635001517_o.jp g?oh=c26f672e07da5d582d2ec3e56cc238c1&oe=5AA07D81
first, i have to get the Cent-Tac, then i can worry about a holster. it would be nice if Wilson listed specifically holsters that fit this on their website (one stop shopping).

Compared to the M9A3, yes, the M9A1 is likely due for a new recoil spring and tracked almost identical to the Centac. But yes, less dip than the M9A3.
So the "dip" really is a thing? I've been wondering about that with my Brigadier as I notice a dip when it fires if I'm being the least bit lazy with technique. It doesn't happen during dry fire or with my 92 Compact.

Oddly enough, I bought this gun over a year ago to try out a 92 with a rail and dovetailed sights, but haven't shot it much. It was the announcement of the Cent Tac that piqued my interest and got me to pull this out and start to give it a run to see if I wanted to hunt down a Cent Tac. I've been enjoying it so much, it has prompted me to seek out a Cent Tac, and another 92A1.

I couldn't agree more with this statement. Thanks for your insight into the developments in Beretta through the years. It's a subject I'm very interested in about an industry and a company in which I have no background. Your quotes from ToddG have me researching more of what he said about his time at Beretta. Unfortunately, I never had a chance to meet him.

For me the dip means the front of the gun drops at the very end of recovery from recoil if I am the least bit lazy with grip.
Boom, sights go up, slide goes back, then forward, front sight dips a bit. I only notice it when I try to fire fast.

I notice the same when I really start to outrun my sights. I’ll have a tendency to push shots low when going at a zesty pace. Clamping down harder with my grip helps.

We used to adjust that with recoil springs in 1911's. I think you might want to go a pound or 2 lighter spring to correct that.

The Brigadier models do this to me horribly unless I switch to a lighter recoil spring. Curiously, I noticed my M9A3 doing it, and I'd never experienced that with a standard slide before, only with Brig's.

Yep. Not at the end of the recoil cycle. Rather, as I complete the trigger press and the shot breaks. Doesn't happen with dry fire that I can notice.

OK so I just got my new Beretta #0020 and I have to say wowza the trigger is amazing. So I don’t have a trigger gauge but it feels like it’s in the low sixes on the double action. Love the front sight also and no rust to be seen on my pistol anywhere. I’ll give further updates after I shoot it and put a gauge on it but so far this pistol seems to be all I’d hoped for and more with the action tune.

I got a CentTac with action tune based on my BrigTac experience. My original BrigTac had the standard trigger and was a very nice pistol. When I got the opportunity to trade for a BrigTac with trigger upgrade, I was really impressed. I thought it was an exceptional DA trigger, and it became my favorite TDA pistol. Now, I have this new CentTac and the trigger is even better. My sample arrived with no visible defects; dry firing was a surprise. I expected as good as the upgraded BrigTac, but not better. At the range, shot-to-shot times are better with the CentTac; feels quicker, is quicker. This is now my favorite TDA pistol. Can't believe I'm back shooting Berettas all the time, carrying a PX4CC, but these feel like the best pistols out there right now.

I'm a three pistol guy myself. One to train, one to carry, one spare.
Are these going to be a regular item like the Brigadier Tac?
Why did they discontinue the compact??
If my Gen5 19s and 43s aren't going to hold up without trigger trouble every 4-5K rounds I'm going to have to look somewhere else. I've always been good with 92s and shot them better than the Sigs I used to carry. And am really starting to feel some seller's remorse coming on.

Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should. ;)
I’m still on the fence about the CenTac, but I’m loving my new Compact. In some modes of dress, I appreciate the shorter grip on the 92C. IWB at 3:30, I can tell a difference between it and the full size 92 BT grip length, especially under a t-shirt.
Of course I’m not wearing a T-shirt much now this time of the year up in RI...

I imagine that Beretta’s move to TN along with the idea of introducing a Compact/Centurion length Vertec slide to replace the old style combined to be a large part of that discontinuation.

The real question is will the compact rise from the ashes like a Phoenix with the Vertec slide? Have zero insight but once you have committed to the tooling to make the short vertec slide why not maximize the output? Remember the Brig Tact was supposed to be a limited release, mine from over a year ago had a SN in the 4xxx, still in demand.

Shot the CenTac extensively today with the fluted guide rod and flat wire 14lb spring installed. Used a bunch of 10" steel Circle targets and ran them at speed shooting as fast as I could with almost all hits I have to cough up an admission that is always difficult.......
GJM was right......there, I said it. There is just something about how the Centurion length slide gun transitions on multiple targets that is amazingly predictable and easy to track. Don't know why or how, but I think I did better today than I ever have at running multiple targets, multiple directions and with the consistent hits I was getting.

I'm guessing it's nearly identical as shooting the compacts. In which I would agree. They are very easy to shoot well. I'm up over 6k rounds with the flatwire kit in my m9a1C and am a fan.

I just picked up a lightly, barely used 92c and wow, am I impressed. I have a lot of time behind a M9 which I always liked but there is something about the compact/cent length slide. I'm going to get some X grip adapters for my collection of full size magazines. It cycles fast and flat. On my second shooting session I was backing up to 40yds and keeping almost all of my hits in the center of a IDPA target. First shot DA too. Just wait until I get a D spring.
I too am a fan of the Wilson flatwire spring as used in my Colt .38 super. The recoil stroke is smoother and consistent throughout. I will be getting one for the 92c.

I have a .45 and a 9mm 1911 in Commander length. The short slides is just more shootable than a full length.

Yeah - for some reason, I just noticed it during last nights match. "Why is this thing rattling around so much?!"
The spring life is incredible, but it is pretty easy to get it to "press-check" distance when man handling...

I fired 50 rounds at this target from 7 yards with my Centurion Tactical with action tune this afternoon. The first round in each of the three magazines was fired double action - the remaining rounds were fired single action. It's a very nice shooting pistol - I had a few flyers, but it wasn't a bad target for me (standing in 6 inches of snow, with fading light). The pistol at the top of the photo is a Wilson Combat Compact Carry Beretta 92G (many thanks to ENEL for recently selling it to me) with a Centurion Tactical slide. I hope this configuration is offered for sale soon!

Enel, Thanks again for selling me your Compact Carry. Sadly, I have no special contacts - I just watched this thread with great interest and reached out to some of the Wilson Combat dealers early. I was fortunate enough to purchase two. If I did have contacts, I would urge Beretta and Mr. Wilson to put the Compact Carry back into production, using the Centurion Tactical slide. The Centurion is a little large for me to want to carry regularly (although it's a great range and nightstand pistol), but the Compact with Mr. Hackathorn's front sight is ideal for me to carry every day.

So I'm a Beretta newb so somebody please help me out. My gun came with an action tune so it had a hammer spring in the box. I assumed it was the stock spring that was replaced with the Wilson part. However how do I identify which is the Wilson D spring to be sure? Is the D spring shorter or longer than the stock spring?

Since yours had the Action Tune the spring that is in the box is the factory D spring. The factory D spring is a little shorter than the Wilson springs but the wire diameter is a little thicker.

You are making me regret selling it! Is the Cent Tac trigger as good as that Compact?
I haven't measured it, but believe the Cent Tac trigger is just as good as the Compact. Both feel lighter in double action than my P226 Legion, and about the same as the Legion in SA. The Cent Tac feels a little better in my hand than the Compact, but haven't had enough trigger time on the two of them yet to see if I can shoot one better than the other.

Increasingly I'm wondering if the CenTac will drive a light refresh of the BrigTac? In direct comparison, the CenTac offers some upgraded features. Updating the BrigTac with the Ameriglo front sight, mag guide, and higher capacity magazines seems like a logical progression to me for the lineup. I find it a bit odd that the more compact pistol actually comes with higher capacity magazines despite using the same full size grip, for example.

No. The CenTac will fit in a M9A1/A3 and a 92 railed Compact holster though. Brig Tac will fit in a Brig Tac/92 G-SD holster.
JM Custom has the CenTac option on their website now as well as the Brig Tac and Compact Carry (scroll all the way to the bottom of the gun options).

Definitely no on the Brig Tac. BT will fit (most) holsters made for the 92G-SD.

I'm wondering if the Cen Tac is gonna make me want a Brig Tac. I don't know what it would do that my 92A1's don't already, but we'll see once I get the Cen Tac in hand and get to the range.

Yeah - for some reason, I just noticed it during last nights match. "Why is this thing rattling around so much?!"
The spring life is incredible, but it is pretty easy to get it to "press-check" distance when man handling...
Saw your video and had to check. Mine does that too but not quite as dramatically. Maybe not cleaning it helps keep movement to a minimum.

I’ve been looking, like everyone else, for one and all I can find are the ones with an action tune. I wanted one without so I could send it in and have the Wilson trigger bar installed during the tune. I had Wilson run my 92A1 through the whole upgrade spa treatment a couple of years ago including the action tune with chrome silicone springs, but I forgot to add the trigger bar. The trigger job they did on the 92A1 is great but occasionally on the harder NATO primers it won’t ignite in single action. I was hoping the trigger bar would fix this. Can anybody confirm if the Wilson trigger bar would help on harder primers or should I just grab a Centurion with the action tune already and keep going?

I can't speak to the action tune, but my stock 92A1 had light strikes with a 14 lb Wilson spring. I just changed it for a 16 lb spring and hope to see this week if that clears up the issue. Just wanted to offer another datapoint.

Usually in a Beretta if you’re going to get light strikes it’ll be in DA as opposed to SA. With the factory trigger bar, the hammer arcs slightly further back in SA as opposed to DA. The Wilson trigger bar allows the hammer to arc a little more in DA.
If you’re getting light strikes in SA your hammer spring might be too light. 13# as low as I’ll go in a Beretta 92. 14# is what I’m more comfortable with because I’ve had 100% reliable ignition on everything I’ve tried.

It should in theory because of how it increases hammer arc. There are multiple variables due to how it works with your particular hammer and spring combo.
The other advantage of the bar is that it is more durable and is easier to tune up vs the factory bar.

What are your personal criteria for a new pistol? Match each of those choices against those criteria and decide based on that. Your question is sort of vague and hard to answer.

I could get rid of every Beretta 92 I have and be happy with a CenTac. With that said, for the money, the Langdon M9 is everything you need and nothing you don’t in a Beretta 92. With some very minor mods you could easily do some competitive stuff with it as well.

Then I guess compare the CenTac vs. the M9A3 on price -- is the CenTac worth the additional cost to you?
Also, have you fired either a full size 92 or a 92 Compact? Many folks like the way the shorter slide shoots vs. the full size. In my case I shoot my 92 Compact a little better than my 92 Brigadier and the Compact has the same length slide as the CenTac. The Centurion / CenTac with its full size grip frame might represent a sweet spot for shoot-ability for many.
And what DB said.

My CenTac came in from Shooters Connection tonight. I immediately picked it up at the range and shot 100 rounds this evening.

47 out of 50 on TDA Dot Torture- one of my best scores ever. For the millions who don't read my training journal- I just started shooting SHO/WHO a few months ago. So I'm happy with my score today.
22331
Best Test ever with a 97 in 9.80 seconds.
Went to 15 yards on the walk back drill with 3x5 card.
This pistol is awesome. It does have the action tune and the trigger is pretty light. If anyone has measured it- what are you seeing? I'm sure it's on this thread somewhere. I still have two ordered through Wilson Combat and need to decide if i get the action tune done on them.
Oh- and my Brig Tac from Palmguy is due in tomorrow!

Managed to finally quit procrastinating and got to the range today. Put 200 rounds of s&b 124gr fmj through the centac and I am really enjoying this gun. Coming from pretty much only shooting glocks working the TDA trigger will be a challenge I can tell as I noticed myself flinching a few times during today's session.
Another issue I ran into was thumb placement. On a glock my support hand thumb rests against the frame and it works fine since its flush with the slide, I tried doing this with the Beretta but it was uncomfortable, possibly due to slide movement? Where are others putting their support hand thumb when shooting Berettas?

My CenTac with trigger job arrived today and like everyone else I’m liking it a lot. No rust anywhere, specifically at the front sight post as some have noticed. But I swear it looks like my front sight has been staked to the frame just to the right of the post. Is this normal for dovetailed Beretta slides or just me? I’ll keep it lubed to keep rust away and it won’t bother me as long as a know I can replace the front sight post when needed with no problem. 22512

Forgive my ignorance but “staking” is just mechanically deforming the steel, creating an interference? If you wanted to remove the front sight, will a sight pusher tool (like Wheeler tool) still move it laterally?
BTW: read the Beretta 92 rear sights come out right to left, looking from shooter position-behind pistol. Is front sight the same ?

There are a couple of threads on Beretta Forum about the staking. Also some about the front sight being quite loose in the Vertec slides Beretta is selling. Some thought maybe that is the blem and reason they are on sale. Now I see this on a Wilson gun which I would have assumed would be manufactured correctly. I don't know, but that stake job sure is ugly isn't it?

A proper amount of directed force will break the interference between the two parts.
Traditional removal of dovetails is right to left, and installs being the reverse. Some manufacturers can go either way, so it’s best to stick to the traditional way of removal... that way you don’t ever mess up.

Aha, still some reason for the 92FS/M9's with the integral front sight, they don't ever come loose and don't need staking.

I have a 92A1 (Italian, but I guess all 92A1s are). The front dovetail sight has no stake and is not moving w/o some serious force. I can see it is insurance to accommodate some manufacturing tolerances (perhaps not being tight). As long as it can be removed if someone wanted another sight, shouldn’t be a big deal.
The front dovetail on my new vertec slide was on the loose side. Not rattley-loose, but loose enough to handpush the front sight completely in place. I used red loctite and staked the front using the same cheapo center punch I use to stake castle nuts. The puppy aint coming out until I "ask" it too.
My blemished vertec slide had a staked on fs. It pushed off easy enough with a tool and the Wilson front sight had plenty, but not to much, resistance going in.

Well, I just placed an order with Wilson (dealer order) yesterday and this morning placed a JMCK order for a Wing Claw 2.5.
I held out since November, telling myself that the 5th attempt at loving a TDA was not warranted. I even was able to pass on a BrigTac last year. Buuuuut, I have owned my M9 since 2000 and countless other pistols have come and gone during that time...maybe this time it'll work out for me.

Been away from gun forums for a bit, come back and see a compact length slide with a removable front sight. Would have loved to have that on my compact carry! Oh well, I'm sure the slide alone is prohibitively expensive for me and I'll be better off just getting the front sight drilled for a fiber optic.
Has anyone had experience with the Mec-gar optimum 18 round mags (https://www.midwayusa.com/product/194236/mec-gar-optimum-magazine-with-base-pad-beretta-92-9mm-luger-steel-anti-friction-black)? I bought 4 in preparation for a move to CO and while I can load them to 18, they require a crap ton of force to seat on a closed slide, enough that I am downloading them to 17.
I also replaced my holster with a JMCK AIWB wing claw 2.0 with j hooks and the pad at the muzzle. Been pretty pleased with it initially, although I did raise the ride height to be able to get a better grip on the draw and ground down the claw. I found as delivered the claw gave more grip tuck than needed and the top of the slide and holster made a big bulge. Once ground down to the point where their is no part sticking up from the claw I am very happy with it.

I actually download all my 18s to 17 due to rattling. Otherwise they're perfect.
I did a shitty home gold bead install on my m9a1C and am hoping for available slides with dovetailed front sights.
I use the same holster but with the extra tuck with my 1911, m9a3, and g19. That's interesting. Can you post a pic? I find that the squaish slide on the g19 prints a little.

I already have an M9A3, the Vertec grip just really works for me with smallish/medium hands. Overcomes all the issues I had with my issued M9's.
Would the Centac with the thin grips, and if I added a short reach trigger, equate to approximately the same in trigger reach and grip circumference as the M9A3?
Furthermore, would the juice be worth the squeeze as far a gaining just a little more concealability?

The compact grip length is much easier for me to conceal when I carry aiwb. Not much of a difference at 4 o'clock.
There's a receipt t thread over at beretta forums measuring a lot of different reaches with the vertec frame, fs, comptac, etc.
I just recently tried, and immediately traded off a short trigger due to it being too short when paired with thin grips. I wear medium gloves.

I've got both the Centac and the M9A3. Trigger reach is pretty darn close as far as I can tell, but I haven't done a tone of measurements just shooting and dry firing.
Worth it? Entirely up to you. Both are very nice, well featured variants of the 92. I've got a second M9A3 on layaway at the LGS. I don't really have plans to add a second Centac.

Blemished vertec slide on a m9a1 compact frame
It doesn’t look bad at all with the railed frame. I tried it years ago with a non railed compact, and it was more pronounced from what I recall.
hmmm.... mine is missing a part.
the little set screw that keeps the rear sight in place isn't there. my Brig-Tac has one.

I got it without the action tune, planning to install a Langdon Trigger in a bag, but the trigger is nice enough I may just use the trigger in a bag for the Langdon M9 instead.
I did not realized it came with a Wilson Grip plug. My serial number is in the 700s.
If you want one of these and are willing to wait, I highly recommend working with George@ http://migunslingers.com/ He was a pleasure to work with and his email is right there if you remove the slashes and HTTP stuff.
mine is also in the 700s. Wilson has them back in stock per the last email from them. so you can go direct, or via your favorite dealer.

Is this normal for Cent Tacs? This is my first 92 and after the first 150 rounds, I found a good bit of the finish stripped. Just seems strange that none of my PX4s have wear this significant after thousands of rounds. Also, the finish is kind of uneven in places.

The condescension is unnecessary. It was just strange to me that a $1300 semi-auto was design to have wear parts chip the slide finish off in the first range outing. I also didn’t know there was a reliable gun with an arguably worse finish than a 642.

Can’t complain about that. Thanks for the trigger Ernest. It appears sights are dialed for 124 grain ammo.
The 20 round mag that comes with the Centurion Tactical has an extremely strong spring and is difficult to load. It also is tight within the grip when loading, not wanting to slide in. Finally, when the gun cycles it goes into battery slowly, so slow my sights are starting to settle and I can see it go the last little bit going forward. I will keep it loaded for a few weeks and see if anything changes, but I am certain this mag will cause malfunctions as the gun gets dirty.

Nice shooting! And I noticed the same thing with my 20 round mag. I don’t use it. The spring is too damn stiff IMO. I recommend loading it to capacity, which will require either the thumbs of Thor or a MagLula, and let it sit for oh, about a month. Only then wound I consider using it. Mine has been loaded to 20 rounds for over a month now. Maybe I’ll use it in April.

I have 2 M9’s, 1 92 Compact, and 2 PX4 CC’s, and they all have perfect finishes. I’ve seen videos of WC Berettas with sloppy finishes on YouTube. I’d send pics to WC, and ask them to try again. I love my Colt 1911 pistols, but I like seeing them in person.

Sir,
I appreciate WC. After spending to much money chasing the 1911 dream - they do it right. I greatly appreciate Beretta's also, correctly done by, WC, Langdon, etc. I've also spent a lot of time w/ my issued M-9. The exterior of your cent tac is not up to par. Contact WC and I will bet my pinky finger that they will make it right. If not you have one extra pinky and I'll take the blemished Cen-Tac.

Sadly, Beretta's Bruniton finish is IMO, just a couple notchs above house paint.. Beretta could really do themselves a favor and start black nitriding the slides and carbon steel barrels. It would look a hell of alot better, provide excellent rust resistance...
I take a file to the feed strip to remove tooling marks, then sand, stone and polish to a mirror shine. Stoning the rails in the slide as well, then some LucasOil grease on the rails and oil on the feed strip. Feels MUCH smoother than out of the box.
I finally got my preferred CenTec serial number after a few misteps at WC. Thanks to Schlafftablett / Josh at AAGW for tracking it down. He did an action tune before coming my way (which includes said work on the feed strip). I think an LTT trigger job in a bag is still needed.

This surprises me. I had the chance to shoot my Centurion and a BrigTac back to back Friday. Total round count through each was 150. I really like the Centurion a lot better than the BrigTac. Handles quicker, settles back on target quicker, it the prefect carry gun. The Brigadier isn't a pile of junk by any means. It just takes a lot more work to keep it moving form target to target.
I would happily trade for another Centurion.

Careful what u wish for. Beretta refused to refinish the barrel on my G-SD under warranty. I assumed they farmed this out and parts were not degreased correctly. Others on Beretta Forum had similar finish issues and some were corrected. Overall the barrel is a brown color with a dark splotch in front of the locking block.

I’ll definitely give the 11.5# spring a try. I also swapped slides around yesterday and found out I like the thing grips on the Centurion way better than the slightly thicker grips that are on the Brig. I think it might be having a bigger impact on the handling of the Brig than I thought. This is a big surprise to me because I really thought I would like the thicker grips better.
Should get a chance to verify in live fire later this week.

Ok just to be clear, here, you're saying Beretta refused to refinish a barrel that they possibly screwed up in the first place? Sounds like that's Beretta's problem, and a example of poor customer service. Frankly, if I were to get a pistol refinished, there a few refinishers that will stand behind their work, I'd go to them. As I said Brutiton or whatever it's called, is a lousy finish. Beretta should be ashamed to offer this in this day and age when so many better finishes are around.

Yes, that's only 1 mag fired to verify function before I sent it back. A lot of black gunk came off the barrel when cleaning the factory oil off with FP10. Beretta CS wanted $110 to ceracoat it.

I was under the impression that both Wilsons (BT and CT) came with the same grips? Mine feel similar. If you like the thinner grips, you may like the LTT grips. They are thinner for sure, but I think I prefer the Wilson grips to the LTT grips on my M9. I just generally like a larger grip.
Edit: Sure enough, the description on the website description has the BT with standard G1 and the CT with Ultra thin G10 grips. I need to compare them more.

Wilson, Langdon and VZ grips for the 92 are all made by VZ, with some individual differences; my understanding is that size-wise they're (i.e., the ultra-thins) all the same, but with some individual specification allowed, such as the extent and direction of checkering, proprietary emblems (either molded {Langdon, VZ} or embedded {Wilson}).
I use and recommend the Langdons-the checkering area is increased, and the checkering direction really does an excellent job of anchoring your hands.

Both the Langdon grips and the Wilson Ultra Thins are special orders from VZ of their ultra-thin grips. The difference between the WC and LTT grips are the WC grips have the medallion vs the engraved logo on the LTTS, and the texture on the WC is a standard checkering, while the LTTs are a broader diamond pattern that goes higher on the grip per Ernest's spec.
As to thickness: they are essentially the same, but the different textures might make them feel different in the hand for different folks.

I’ve been pretty happy with my Centurion until today by I’m not sure there were any deal breakers. I put 300 rounds of Winchester 124 grain NATO ammo through it last weekend, no problems. Today with 200 rounds of the same ammo I had 4 rounds give me light strikes. Three of them fired after being hit again but one round took another three or four strikes before it fired. Then on my last mag the piece surrounding the tritium vial flew off.
So, am I going to have to deal with Beretta on this sight issue? Do the light strikes sound like an ammo issue?

Try different ammo first. I have had horrible experiences with Winchester ball ammo. A few years ago, when my agency switched to 9mm, I had to buy a significant amount (250k rounds) of 147 ball from them during the crunch. We had HUNDREDS of light strikes in standard issue M&Ps. It became comical after a while. Four months into retirement, I now have to buy my ammo again. Got a mag/ammo deal from PSA. Ammo was Win. 124 gr WB. Last weekend I broke into it for a local match. Three light strikes in the first fifty round box I opened. I hate their ammo, and won't buy more. Only reason I ended up with this was due to the deal on magazines.

I have both a Brigadier Tactical and a Compact Carry so naturally I'm thinking about the new Centurion version. My only gripe about these really good pistols is the Bruniton finish, the stuff just doesn't wear well. I have an early INOX 92 that was a duty pistol that looks better. I hope in the future that Wilson will start doing these with the INOX finish, now that would be something. I'm seriously thinking about sending one of my Wilson Combat Berettas to Robar for their really durable NP3 finish just to see how it turns out. I've had them do several other Berettas for me PX4s and my APX and that would solve my dislike for the Bruniton finish problem. What do you guys think?

I'm with you there on the durability of the finish, insert "these are tools!" comment to which I also agree. I enjoy the look of a well-worn used pistol, that being said if the longevity of the finish is a concern I'd advocate going with that aftermarket finish. My Brig Tac doesn't have the greatest of finishes on the grasping grooves on the rear of the slide but truthfully I don't think much of it. In time as the whole gun begins to show some wear and I don't want to look at it any longer that's probably when I'll explore the refinishing options.
I spent a year with a 226 Legion. Beretta's finish way better than what ever Sig is using.
AJD21
03-15-2018, 06:54 PM
The Legion finish is inconsistent, many report little wear after a year and others have the finish scrap off after one session in a Kydex holster. However, the standard Nitron is done by Ionbond and is far superior to Bruniton in my experience.

Need some help with understanding what WC does on an Action Tuned Centurion.
Do you recommend the Action Tune or EL Trigger in a bag?
Or do they address different issues and they can be combined?
I have a Centurion with the Wilson action tune and chrome silicon springs. I had a BrigTac with the trigger job in a bag. Overall DA/SA weight was very similar. The Langdon set up was smoother over all and just felt better. I blind tested a few friends and they all came to the same conclusion.
At some point in the future I’m going to pick up a second Centurion without the action tune and put the Langdon trigger job in it.
action tune is lighter springs and a polish job. LTT TIAB includes the WC trigger bar that has reworked angles and all the parts come pre-polished to boot. So...the LTT kit plus the polishing of the feedramp that is part of the action tune would be the combination of both approaches. IIRC, LTT consulted with WC on the original list of work they do so they're taking the same approach. The WC action tune doesn't touch the sear AFAIK whereas LTT's kit does.
I've done quite a few action tunes on my own without touching the hammer hooks or sear and there's a LOT that can be done that way.
My CenTac had an action tune done by Josh at AAGW and its a lot nicer than my bone stock BrigTac. Guess I should knock out the BrigTac at some point as well. I've had WC and AAGW do trigger jobs on my 92 Centennials and the AAGW work is a far nicer trigger.

Cent Tac is roughly the size of a P30l.

The BrigTac pictured below was purchased without an action tune and came with a 9/4.5 lb trigger pull.

I purchased this CenTac with the action tune and it was much smoother and lighter at 8/3.5 lbs.
24762
This 92FS has a Langdon Trigger Job in a Bag with a 14lb hammer spring and is essentially identical to the CenTac with Wilson Trigger job.

Crap, 200rds into breaking in the first Centurion and the front sight paint popped out. Hit me in the forehead! Gun shoots great other than that. Wilson said they will take care of it but I'm gonna see if my guys can just fix it here.

Buy some testors paint in your favorite color and use a round toothpick to drop paint into the sight. Clean it w/ alcohol first.

Is the epoxy used to keep the paint from flying off? I thought about covering the whole thing in clear nail polish.

The epoxy on our HD sights is there to protect the paint and sapphire from damage.

Does anyone have any issues with the trigger stacking. I picked up a Centurion with the Wilson trigger job and I am not very impressed. It is light, but stacks at the end of travel. My PX4 compact trigger, although heavier, doesnt stack like my Wilson. Any one experience this or have any advice. I am new to Berettas but I was hoping for better.

I suppose individual perceptions may vary, but “stacking” isn’t a word that comes up often when discussing Beretta triggers. I certainly don’t notice it on any of my 92’s.
Is there a way you can find another 92 to compare, or perhaps someone experienced with 92’s to try out your gun?
Mechanically, I’d check to see if the trigger bar is rubbing the stock panel. If that’s not the cause, I’d look into the possibility of the hammer strut is rubbing or binding somehow, either on the spring coils, or the hammer/strut interface, and ensure the trigger isn’t binding on the frame.
That’s all the possibilities I can think of at the moment.
ETA: Also make sure the firing pin block moves freely, since it lifts near the end of the trigger stroke.

Looks like I found the issue. The hammer strut/spring was binding somehow. After I eliminated the grip panel, trigger bar and firing pin block. I disassembled the hammer and strut and re assembled. Problem solved and now it feels like I expected. I will get these Berettas figured out.

I am one of the luckier ones. Both my WC Berettas, a Brig Tac and a Cen Tac are 100%, with no issues. I am really anxious to get the LTT!
I assume that the Centurion with the Wilson action tune comes with the Wilson short reach trigger. What’s the difference between the Wilson short reach trigger and the standard Beretta steel trigger? Would the standard trigger feel like it breaks farther forward of the frame? Also, is the factory Beretta adjustable trigger a short reach trigger or standard trigger?

I don't believe the Cen Tac comes with a short reach trigger, with or without the action tune.
No, it does not. The action tune is just that....polishing of moving surfaces that effect trigger feel and a lighter spring but does nothing to swap the trigger out. Its also not a trigger job.
The Wilson Short reach trigger is useful if you've got really short fingers but it has a squarish blade shape and isn't as comfortable as the metal standard trigger that comes in the CenTec. Beretta does sell an adjustable metal trigger with pre-travel and overtravel adjustment screws.
Just wanted to bump this thread especially since all the Beretta goodness is at a high.
I recently picked up a Wilson Centurion and have become enamored with it. It is the perfect size and it flat out shoots! I see why people like the centurion slide for its shooting characteristics. I need to spend more time with it, but i am really liking it.
One of the things I like about these 92s is that for me, they conceal great. The shape of the grip and the gun lend itself to excellent concealability. It is easier to conceal then a g19 for me. Plus having 18+1 flush fitting mags in a great shooting gun is nice.
Just curious if anyone has any info to add or if there are any comparisons to the LTT yet.

For those who wish to carry a Beretta 92 as a daily carry, the CenTac is about perfect. I absolutely love my LTT Elite for a dedicated WML gun. Basically, two different uses for them. Obviously, both could be run concealed or as a WML dedicated pistol, but I find each to be at home in the roles I have them in. My CenTac is now getting little use because I daily carry a PX4CC and the LTT Elite is handling home defense and bedside duties.

So I picked up my WC CentTac from my FFL dealer Monday, serial number range 24xx. I didn't have a chance to go over it with a fine-tooth comb until today when I noticed SEVERAL issues. A couple problems aren't huge to me (finish and machining marks) since I plan to carry and compete with it anyways but a couple of the problems are concerning:
First, the slide at the muzzle isn't radiused evenly-one side, the left side, is rounded, whereas the left side has the flat surface typical of the average beretta. This creates another issue where the slide "hood" over the top of the muzzle (underneath the front sight) is noticeably thicker on one side than the other. As your looking at the muzzle, the section that's thicker is at about the 2-2:30 vs 10-10:30 on the other side of the barrel opening. My concern is the thinner portion of this area may be more prone to cracking. It probably wouldn't but its not a chance I feel I should have to take on a $1250 gun (+$ for the action tune).
Secondly, the barrel bore and crown was rusted when I received it. I've never seen this before on a new pistol or even a used one and I'm not meticulous about cleaning mine... I typically don't clean one unless I've got at least 250 rounds through it or 6 months passes.
Thirdly, the underside of the slide rails has several "pock marks" that have been coated over. Most of them are small but one on the edge is pretty big IMO. I'll throw in the deep (easily felt with the finger) swirl-like machining marks just in front of the frame rails on each side here on this point... The rest of the machining marks that cover the inside of the slide and frame aren't deep like these two and are basically a cosmetic annoyance.
Finally, the coating on the left side of the front sight where it was dovetailed in is chipped-like I can see what looks like bare metal on the edge... Slightly cosmetic I suppose but pretty ridiculous on such a high-end Beretta.
As for the Action Tune that Wilson did, I'd definitely pass on that in the future. The trigger felt spongy all the way through the trigger pull and break---like a Glock with a 3.5# ghost connector with a minimal amount of stacking just before the break... The trigger break itself wasn't impressive either--like a carrot vs the glass rod on my 2015-produced Italian-made 92 compact. I ended up putting a Langdon TJIB on that pistol a few months ago and wow, it's single-handedly the best trigger I've ever felt.. It was good before the TJIB but that with the 13# hammer spring made it nothing short of amazing (think ball bearings rolling on glass and a glass-rod type break). I would definitely take that route in the future but maybe the guy at Wilson Combat installing my action tune parts was having an off day, IDK...
On the plus side, the slide to frame fit was excellent and aside from the chipped coating near the front sight, the coating was pretty decent everywhere else-unlike many others have had problems with as of late. This gun feels amazing in my hand and so natural. Discovering these issues was a pretty huge let down. These problems aren't unique to me and are a direct result of obvious issues that the Beretta plant in Gallatin TN is having. I just hope that Wilson Combat and/or Beretta take care of me on at least the slide radius issue. I've sent a message to Wilson and will report back what they recommend. I will say that I won't be buying any more new Berettas produced in Tennessee for a few years until they can get their act together.

Unfortunately you seem to be amongst those few who have received a problematical Cen Tac. Hopefully Beretta will get their act together in Tennessee and these issues will be a thing of the past. Interestingly enough I haven't heard any issues with the Langdon LTT pistols. I am among the fortunate majority who have received damn fine Brig Tacs and Cen Tacs as mine are outstanding pistols, as is my LTT Elite.

I picked up a Brig Tac ~1 month ago that had the same issue. Additionally the tritium in the front sight was dead. I returned it to Beretta and the front sight was addressed and the barrel is........slightly better.
My LTT was "perfect" and is definitely my preference.

Beretta is the manufacturer so any warranty issues go there initially which is noted on the WC web site. However WC has stepped up to the plate and either gone to bat with Beretta on behalf of customers or have taken care of customers directly in several instances. It sucks, but there is an order of procedure that has to be followed initially.
Very sorry to see you received a screwed up example. Hopefully it is made all good for you quickly.
BTW...... The trigger bar rubbing on the grip panel is a known problem.

Put me in the unhappy customer column with the Centac. I bought it sight unseen directly from Wilson. Loved the concept of the gun. However, the quality that Beretta is putting out on these guns is what you would expect out a 3rd world country 40 years ago. If look at the pictures is like they made this guy with a chisel. The machining is rough and of poor quality. The bore on my gun is totally dark and rough, so rough that it sheds cooper on the crown as in melted cooper that bonds to it and has to be scraped of with a pick. I sent it to Wilson, who were very nice in looking at it. But sent it back and said it is a "milspec gun" sorry. The said they polished the bore, it looks just as dark to me. I even asked Wilson to take it back and replace it, they said no. I asked to have them take it back, give me credit and I will buy a 3x more expensive 1911, they said nope.
I can't recommend anyone spend $1350 on this gun. I don't understand why Wilson allows it or thinks this is acceptable. A half cost CZ gun, the quality and machining on it, it is light years ahead of what Beretta is putting out. This purchase is my biggest regrets so far. I will never get sucked in by the hype and buy another gun as a web order sight unseen.

That’s really too bad.
I have several Beretta 92s, I guess they’re all “milspec,” but none have any of the issues that you’re having.
One would like to think that buying from Wilson would ensure a higher level of quality control before they put their name on it (literally).
I’d suspect that it was an issue with the new Beretta plant in Tennessee, but my newest gun is an LTT Elite made there, and it looks fine.
Wonder what’s going on?

Obviously Beretta made bad product and shipped it out the door as can be seen on the two examples of pictures here from different members. But my disappointment is with Wilson. I bought it directly form them, they shipped it out. Obviously they don't have any QA either and are fine sending this low quality product out the door. For a gun that cost 2x a regular Beretta this is unacceptable.
I am happy to hear that Langdon must be doing QA and not shipping out subpar product. I had ordered the LTT and cancelled it to get the Wilson, that turned out to be the wrong move. I bought the gun on July so it was not an early production model.
so you don't like the machining marks that are on the inside of the gun?
does is function properly?
is it accurate?

Took mine out today specifically to shoot against the LTT Elite. I shot a couple of the normal drills and put it away. The sights need to get bumped right a bit. Overall, the CenTac is a great gun for someone who wants to carry a Service Size Beretta 92. I love the sights, my trigger is good, gun functions well with decent Ammo (WWB 115 doesn’t always go bang) and mine is fairly good on the machining and finish side. With that said...I shoot the LTT Elite better and am enjoying it more. I will not be actively getting rid of the CenTac, but am not getting a second one as planned. I will likely be getting a second LTT Elite. I will say that the CenTac does have a certain recoil characteristic to it that I really do like better than any of my other 92’s.

The inside of the flgunnie CenTac is pretty bad. What's worse, to me as a 2x Wilson and 1x Beretta Wilson buyer, is Wilson turning people away full-stop. I get it, Wilson didn't manufacture the pistols, but they did choose to stick their premium name on them, sell them at a premium price, and also do this direct. There should really be more interest from Wilson to see that these guns reflect the premium brand that Bill spent a long time building.
IMO, Beretta shouldn't accept that level of quality either. If I saw that as an uneducated consumer, nothing about it would inspire me to buy a Beretta, let alone spend twice the price to buy a Wilson variant. It's pretty disappointing.

The gun went already to Wilson CS, they had it for 3 weeks, sent it back. They fixed two other functional issues as in the takedown lever being so rough it would get stuck halfway and I had to hit with a screwdriver to move it down, and I couldn’t swap the mag release because the grip was too thick on the right side it wouldn’t let the mag drop.
Wilson Combat only has one Beretta gunsmith they told me. I asked the service manager to replace the gun. They declined. They were very nice about it, but in the end didn’t do the right thing. I can’t see Beretta doing anything either. Everybody takes the tack that if the gun is functional, that is all there is to it. I trusted the Wilson name for a high quality product. They don’t have my trust anymore.

I own both a Brig Tac and a Cen Tac, both with the action tune, and an LTT with the trigger job. All are exceptional pistols luckily for me.
There has been several complaints on another forum about QC issues with some Cen Tac pistols in particular. Until recently it seems WC had really stepped up to the plate in taking care of many of these issues even though the web site states these are Beretta manufactured pistols and therefore warranty issues are to be handled by Beretta. I have defended WC in a few of the forum threads as my experience with WC CS has been outstanding while at the aame time it seems some people would only be happy if Bill Wilson personally kisses their ass, it seems there are certainly some valid complaints by owners of some Cen Tac pistols. Not quite sure what is going on with WC now as it seems they are stepping back from working to go the extra mile to resolve some of these issues. Hopefully things get straightened out for this forum member, and Beretta gets their problems straightened out PDQ!!
In response to the post above I really like my Cen Tac. I feel it balances better than the full size pistols while still shooting very comfortably. Interestingly enough I have also experienced a few light primer strikes with wwb. Also, I find that while the triggers on my WC pistols are noticeably lighter and the trigger breaks further from the frame in DA than in the Langdon pistol, which I prefer, the Langdon trigger is silk smooth in DA.
The Cen Tac can be an outstanding pistol when done up properly. It seems that a potential buyer needs to pay particular attention before signing on the dotted line unfortunately.

That is where I am at. I got a good one. Needs a sight adjustment that is not a huge deal. This is sort of like winning in Vegas. I will simply take my good one and walk away from the table. I do not know what is going on behind the scenes, but I would think somebody at Wilson should be having some serious conversations with the folks at Beretta who should be having some internal reviews of QC standards.

There is just something about the Centurion size guns. Not sure why, but the combo of the tailed frame and the Centurion slide and mine has a flat wire spring installed. It works well in the recoil impulse and sight tracking department.

If it’s worth anything, I have purchased factory new Berettas in 2013 (92FS), 2015 (92FS Compact), 2016 (PX4 Compact), 2017 (Cheetah Inox) and 2017 (92A1) and none have had remotely that rough of finishing. You may have just received a lemon.
If it functions I wouldn’t fret but for the prices you pay on a Centac I would make a small, reasonable fuss.

I'm considering a CenTac at the end of the year, or possibly an LTT 92. Fortunately, I have a shop here locally that stocks the Wilson Berettas, so I can examine them in hand before purchase.

The one I bought from WGC was perfect 224. If I had known you were thinking of one I would have let you try it before I traded it off.
