Anybody in the path?

We're on the road from Seattle to Coeur d'Alene tomorrow.

May have to turn the lights on in the truck.

Right in the path. Glad I'm on a day off, for several reasons.

I've got projects going in Casper, WY and expect nothing productive tomorrow - to the point I suggested they go ahead and work Tues-Sat instead of Mon-Fri this week. I hope shit isn't crazy for them either way.

Meanwhile I'm happy with 85% totality here in OK.

I'm in the path. The path of the traffic headed to see it, anyway. I-81 Southbound has been totally stupid for the last couple of days. Spillover onto Rt 11 as well. I guess it'll go back to normal tomorrow at some shortly point before the eclipse, then Northbound will go full retard for a couple of days. Eclipse traffic, vacationers, and college traffic have Interstate way beyond capacity.

Supposed to get to 85% here, I've heard. I'll already have my welding shield on, so if / when it gets too dark to weld, I'll just lay back and watch the eclipse through my shield, then when it brightens up again I'll get back to work.

I'm working now and tomorrow night as well. We'll have 90% and I'm waking up early to see it.

Close enough.

My dad took me to a total solar eclipse when I was five. Taking my four year old son out of school to see the one tomorrow.

In the path of it. Will be working during it, not knowing what to expect traffic or business wise. I made someone do a double take today when they asked if we all had our glasses, and my response was they were selling those glasses to look at the sun. It is a total solar eclipse, so I will look at the moon instead.

Right in the middle of it. I've been hearing that the roads into central OR are the pits with the influx of visitors so I've been staying put.

GardoneVT
08-21-2017, 12:54 AM
In the path of it as well, although not 100% totality. Which is a good thing, seeing all the troubles towns and cities in the totality zone are having with logistics and security.

Southern AZ, so not really. One of my cousins left Friday to take her kids to see it. I thought that was pretty cool, but more for the family trek than anything. I'll check it out, but, not directly. No glasses.

I'm right in the center of it. No court today -- judges closed things down -- so we're assigned to our respective LE agencies to be available to assist them with... something? Gonna be a lot of tourists in my small corner of the world.

Jared
08-21-2017, 06:18 AM
I'm close enough to the 100% spot that I'm expecting it to be a total shitshow trying to get home from work today. Speaking of which, I'll be at work when it happens. The weather forecast on the radio just mentioned it may end up being cloudier than they'd hoped for this event, which will be a bummer for the people that spent some exorbitant amounts on lodging to see it if it doesn't clear.

Robinson
08-21-2017, 09:55 AM
It will be about 98+% where i live. Pretty close to totality but not quite enough for safe viewing without the special glasses.

Totem Polar
08-21-2017, 10:11 AM
92 percent, supposedly. Got a 10-pack of the glasses; Mrs Sidheshooter and I are headed out to a friend's waterfront place for brunch and solar gazing presently.

Palmguy

I had plans to go up to Tennessee but pulled the plug on it just out of concern for the potential madness and the possibility of a stray cloud blocking the main event after spending all the time and money to get there. ~85% coverage here, so I'm just gonna go home from work in a little bit and watch it from there.

We're fortunate enough to be in the totality path and will be viewing it from our backyard. I took the day off and our kids are home with us.

About the eclipse from Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Idaho (https://www.facebook.com/LincolnCountyIDSheriff/posts/1425608034184480)

Excerpts:

"3. We drive trucks, tractors, combines, and swathers on the highway going about our business. They go pretty slow and won't move faster if you sit behind us and honk. In fact, they actually go a bit slower. We live here. You don't. Be patient and enjoy the scenery.[...]
"6. Our wildlife will kill you and it will hurt the whole time you are dying. Elk, moose, bison, and grizzly bears take great pleasure in playing hacky sack with tourists that get too close."

Well that was pretty cool. With the just barely visible sliver of sun that was still showing, it's amazing it didn't get even darker here. I'd say it was about the same amount of light out as around 8:30-9:00 in the evening this time of year.

Here, we hit 92%, it was overcast and foggy, so it got dim, then it got bright again, because when Raven spit the Yellow Sky Demon back up, all the clouds and fog went away.

There are probably some tree huggers in Seattle who believe that.

I went to the range and shot. 99.7% occlusion. Got twilight dark for about 2 minutes. Sun was still more or less directly overhead, for this latitude anyway. Bluish light. Weird feeling.

We hit 78%. I didn't have any official eclipse viewing glasses, but my ghetto version comprised of a couple pair of dark polarized sunglasses and a welding helmet -- combined with a partly cloudy sky -- worked really well.

Full totality here in Farmington, Missouri, over two minutes where I was (with a group of people).

All of the hype about the eclipse was a pale shadow of how fantastic it was. Stars out, the horizon looked like a 360-degree sunset. Where I was, a cloud drifted over the Sun at about 95% totality, but it moved off at about 99%.

I had a pair of 10x binoculars with a solar filter on one objective and a lens cap taped over the other. At totality, I pulled off the lens cap. The corona was just awesome. I could see stars close to the Sun and I saw a pink solar flare arching on the right side of the Sun. I don't have the words to describe it. Until today, the most beautiful natural sight I had ever seen was the Grand Canyon at sunset during the winter. This was far, far better.

There is no comparison between the Sun at even near-totality and totality itself. If you ever get a chance to experience a total eclipse, you should.

We had about 97% occlusion. I enjoyed how sharp the shadows became and how cool it was during the event.

Living in Nashville now, really didn't put much thought into the eclipse until today. Went to dog park this morning in Hendersonville, our normal routine. Lots of people setting up tripods with video equipment. Two women in car next to me, drove all night from Michigan to be here. That made me realize I need to pay attention to this event this afternoon. About 1:25pm it got pitch dark out for about 90, seconds. I got bit by a wasp in the back watching, then the sun did it's thing and daylight resumed. the dog ran past and grabbed a burning stick out of the camp fire I had going. I used some strong language to get him to stop. The nice old lady next door said "I'm only taking photos of the eclipse, but I will stop if you wish. I apologized and explained, was only talking to my dog before he could cause trouble. As if we rehearsed it, dog now jumps front paws up onto fence with smoldering stick in mouth, somewhat hurt that no-one would throw it. The eclipse was quick and pleasant to see, glad i didn't have to drive all night to see it.

We saw full totality from the BiLo in Bamberg, SC. Expectations were far exceeded. Back roads to a small town was a brilliant idea, seeing the mess that is I-95 right now.

When the next ones come along in a few years I think we will be traveling to see them, so our son can experience it (he is too young right now and those ones will likely be the only chance he'll have).

Oh boy, I'm in the totality path again for that one too.

We drove to Tennessee for it. Spent the night in Knoxville and then drove south through the countryside instead of going to any of the busy areas. It was worth the trip.

I wasn't expecting the strange shimmering effect cast on everything for about a minute immediately before and after totality. It looked like light shining through water.

Edit: Apparently that shimmering effect is a very rare thing that we were lucky to experience.

The chances of my seeing the 2045 eclipse (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_August_12,_2045) are iffy at best, but for the young folk, it should not be missed. Six minutes of totality in the eastern U.S.!

The family and I were in the National Forest about 16 miles south of my home. There was a little over a minute of totality. Surprisingly, the difference as it progressed from near totality to complete was huge. The birds started chirping as if to say "hey, look at that!"

A shooting related side note: This is a regularly used shooting area, and there was a lot of trash and junk used for targets. The bad apples trashing the forest really spoil the impression of the shooting community.

I thought we all bit it during Y2K?

Yep, that was quite the time! Y2K transferred a lot of money from corporations with irrational fear to those with computer skilz. It wasn't just the yocals building bunkers. I remember all of the congratulations from the corporate masters, none of whom noticed that the rest of the world, which did barely anything, were just fine too.

Some of the unscrupulous consultant companies hired even went so far as to catalog that electronic stuff like monitors were Y2k compliant -- Confusing the difference between realtime clocks and cpu clocks.
