Week 229: Frank Garcia Dot Drill

Results may be posted until September 11th, 2017.

Designed by: Frank Garcia
Range: 7 yards
Target: Six 2” dots – Download here: http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/6x2in-circles.pdf
Start Position: Hands at sides, facing the target, pistol holstered
Rounds Fired: 36
Par Time: 5 seconds

Start with pistol loaded and holstered. Upon start signal, draw and fire 6 rounds into one dot. Do this for each of the six dots.

Traditionally, this drill is shot from the holster, at 7 yards, with a 5 second par time, and is scored Pass/Fail (36/36 = Pass, not 36/36 = Fail.) Variations are fine if they enable you to participate in the drill.

Suggested variations:

If you aren't allowed to draw from the holster at your live fire facility, then instead start with the gun on the bench with magazine in the magazine well, but chamber empty. Upon start signal, pick up gun, chamber a round, and fire 6 rounds into one dot.

If the time and accuracy standards are unworkable for you, start by moving the target closer. If you are not able to make hits at the 3 yard line, then try doing the drill without a par time.

Concealment is not required, but is certainly allowed if you wish to use it.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Equipment used (pistol, holster, optional concealment garment if one was used)
Any variations used (concealment, starting with gun on bench, reduced distance, no par time)
Time and hits for each of the six strings
Total score out of the 36 possible points
Pass or Fail per the original 36/36 standard

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Shot left-right, top- bottom *edit* shit it's upside down...

Clint Eastwood said a man's got to know his limitations, and i took his word. I knew 7 yards was not within my ability, so i ran it at 5 yards. A few of the hits were edgers that barely made it in. Overall i surprised myself, as i thought 5 was still to far. I obviously didn't clean it at this distance, but thought I'd only be about 3/6 on average or be over time each run. I liked that the pace of this drill forced hard front sight focus, which in turn limited my eye sprinting that I continually struggle with. As of now I'll continue to run this at 5 until i can clean it. Maybe one day I'll do that and move on to the standard 7 yards but as of now i think I'd just be trading ammo for noise.

This is hard. I knew going in that 7 yard 2" dots was not likely. Dot one got 1/6, and the time was ridiculous, so I moved up to a distance I know I can hit 2" dots and went from there.
7 yards
1: 1/7, over 10s
3 yards
2: 4/6, 6.1
3: 4/6, 5.09
4: 5/6, 6.29
5: 3/6, 4.15
6: 5/6, 5.80
Total: 22/36. Point fail, time fail.

Did some other stuff, came back to this drill for the last of my session. Dispensed with time, decided to focus on making some hits at 5 yards.
1: 5/6
2: 5/6
3: 5/6
4: 3/6
5: 5/6
6: 4/6
27/36, fail.

I returned to this drill today, at a much more realistic range.

Equipment used: Glock19/ATEi Roland Special, Bawidamann Gotham AIWB under polo
Any variations used: Concealed, 3yd
Time and hits for each of the six strings:
4.23 6/6
4.02 5/6
4.70 5/6
4.07 5/6
4.09 6/6
4.37 5/6

Total score out of the 36 possible points: 32/36 FAIL.

Its well within my skill to clear this at 3 yards. a couple more attempts and I'll be able to move out to 4yds

Had a failure to lock open on the last round which was caused by my support hand riding on the slide stop. On circle #6 I had a hard target focus and cleaned it, what does that mean? Not sure, but I noticed it on shot #2 and stayed with it and ended up cleaning it.

5. 6/6 - 4.71
6. 4/6 - 4.17

I tried this again @5 but with my Beretta this time. I find the Beretta easier to shoot. The par times felt generous and i had plenty of time where i should have slowed down a touch and cleaned up the mikes. With the glock i was pressed for time and felt rushed, even on the runs i was under time. With the Beretta i had plenty of time and could concentrate on a good press etc. I'm going to keep running this and once i pass it then I'll work back to seven.

For some reason I was completely unable to focus on the front sight during this drill. I either had 2 targets and a fuzzy sight or fuzzy everything, not sure what was going on but it sucked.
