My snark center just melted down. From BBC News (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40848372):

A US clothing company has come under fire after T-shirts appeared online featuring swastikas in a move aimed at reclaiming the symbol as one of "love".

The attempt to rebrand the Nazi emblem as a symbol of "peace" was criticised on social media as the public refused to support the campaign.

Days after the design appeared, it was replaced with an "anti-swastika" print.

The swastika is an ancient symbol said to have represented good fortune in almost every culture in the world.

It was adopted by Adolf Hitler, thousands of years after it was first used, transforming it into a symbol of hate associated with the Third Reich.

As a fashion symbol, it was likely to prove difficult to persuade the public to get behind this clothing company's vision in working to change these perceptions.

I mean, the swastika still sees widespread use throughout Asia. Wouldn't be terribly hard to market that fashion line over there, I would think.

If anything, I find it strange that the BBC article fails to mention swastika usage in Asia in their "History of the swastika" section, given how it was and continues to be a revered symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, etc.

Swastika history from the US Holocaust museum.

According to the BBC article, the swastika was used as a good-luck symbol in the US early in the 20th century.

But separating it from the Nazi "brand" is going to be a long uphill slog.

I don't think the swastika can, or should, ever be redeemed. It's sort of how the pentagram will never again be seen as a sign of protection against evil because the satanist asshats have used it for so long. Except the swastika is strongly associated with real world events. Bad idea.

Lefties embracing fascist symbols? Say it ain't so!

I think that this apparel would be prohibited in much of Western Europe, and Germany/Austria in particular.

That's an understatement. The Germans arrested two Chinese tourists the other day for taking photos while making the 'Heil Hitler' salute in front of the Reichstag. From BBC News (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-40842853):

Two Chinese tourists were arrested in Berlin for making Hitler salutes outside the German parliament on Saturday.

Criminal proceedings have been started against the middle-aged men for using symbols from a banned organisation.

The pair have been released on bail of €500 (£450; $600) each.

Germany has strict laws on hate speech and symbols linked to Hitler and the Nazis.

The men - aged 36 and 49 - could face a fine or a prison sentence of up to three years, according to police.

I mean, I get the Germans are touchy about it, but $600 bail for being an asshat tourist seems a bit much.

ETA: On second thought, that seems appropriately German.

Any Boy Scouts here?

Know what the Order Of The Arrow was called used as symbolism before WWII?

The reverse swastika is a Zen symbol, and the older Shorinji Kempo symbol as well.

I'm delighted to see these people focus their time and effort on this kind of self-defeating bullshit and not on matters of importance.

The 45th infantry from here in OK used a swastika (a Native American symbol as well) prior to going to fight in Ww2, if I remember the display at the museum correctly...

Personally I think rainbow swastikas as a new symbol for the thought police leftists is entirely fitting, I encourage them to keep it up.

There are other examples of positive uses of the swastika:

I was in Germany a couple of weeks ago. While I was there, I took a short orientation on Germany. One of the things I learned is that it is a felony to display Nazi symbols or deny that the holocaust happened. This also applies to German citizens when they are out of the country -- supposedly they will be arrested when they return if they break this law. I also got a tour of Zeppelin Field in Nuremberg (site of annual Nazi rallies) and I saw the courtroom where the Nuremberg trials were held. Our tour guide said the same thing, and he was extremely serious when it came to this subject.

The irony of the German totalitarianism regarding a history of German totalitarianism is priceless, brother.

And ironic considering, as I remember reading some years back, that Germans are considered the most ill behaved tourists in Europe.

I got kicked out of Cub Scouts. Scouts Honor - I got kicked out of Cub Scouts. All we did was make pine-derby cars, Gods eyes, and other dumb shit. I wanted to go out in the woods and learn how to get around and about in the world, but my Den Leader was a pansy. So, I told him one day that, "I think this is lame shit and it is boring." And when my father arrived to pick me up the Den Leader said to my father, "I don't think RR is appropriate for the Cub Scouts and is not welcome back." And my dad responded with, "He told you, that you keep making them do lame shit, didn't he? Maybe stop making them do lame shit." Wonder where I got that from?

So my dad gave me an Army manual, a compass, a tent, and a hammer and sent me first into the backyard and then in the woods behind the neighborhood to figure it out myself.

I've been a drunken tourist in Australia, does that count?

A 72-hour liberty chit in Perth during a Westpac - I was living large! I am told that I was very polite and that I also had a very good time.

The details are still sorta fuzzy....

I'm going to go all in with Chinese Expat Businessman.

I was going to go with the Aussie Expats, as they seem to hate their livers and want to punish them with Bundaberg rum. But they're not that bad during working hours.

Yes it is deplorable!

But it has been used all over the world for luck. I have pictures of it, all over AL Hatra in Iraq. Al Hatra literally died around the time of Christ. It has been used. Let me go dig them up, Isis destroyed this site a few years back.

While I think it's silly, I'll bet it has something to do with this: http://www.npr.org/2017/07/21/538608404/after-supreme-court-decision-people-race-to-trademark-racially-offensive-words

Quote from the article: CHANG: But there's a catch. Maynard can't just get the trademark, put it in a drawer and make sure nobody else uses it. To keep a trademark, he actually needs to sell a swastika product. So he will - blankets, shirts, flags. But he plans to make these products so expensive he's hoping no one will ever buy them.
