I was watching collateral last night and though two gun fighting scenes were pretty awesome, the first one being Tom Cruise's suit case getting taken and the second scene in the club. I thought the scenes were pretty cool because Tom was pretty aggressive and quick.

The cool thing about this was that Michael Mann had Tom Cruise go through a good bit of training to do those scenes. It was a very good bonus disc IIRC.

If you want solid gun handling attached to a mediocre movie, check out Way of the Gun. The writer/director's brother is a former Navy SEAL and served as technical advisor on the set. It shows. There are some seriously great shootout in the flick, and the weapons handling and tactics are about the best I've seen in a movie.

Agree on Way of the Gun, one of my favorites. Lots of great lines too.

I've learned how to do a one-handed press check from that movie.

I'm going to have to revisit that movie. I remember watching it a long time ago and thinking it sucked...but honestly that was before I would have appreciated the technical aspects. Maybe now I can sit through parts of it...

That's how you knew they were serious people...

"The Way of the Gun" is really a fun movie. Bounding retreats with cover, one-handed press checks, tactical reloads - the gun handling in that movie was rather exceptional for a movie.

...and ANY movie that opens with Sara Silverman getting punched in the face as hard as humanly possible is worth watching.

There are some fine gunfights in Michael Mann's "Public Enemies" too.

Lots of BARs, Thompson SMGs and 1911 action.

Mann just nailed it in this movie. If you haven't seen it, it's well worth watching.

i thought the movie was pretty slow. the couple gun fights were good though.

i felt it was similar to "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" historically interesting subject that could have shaved an hour out of and been better. I would have thought a movie about Dillinger and James would have more gun fights or robberies and less periods of very little dialogue or anything going on.

"The Kingdom" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0431197/) was another good screen gunfight that felt more grounded than typical Hollywood action movies. And, again, the common denominator is Michael Mann who was the Producer and was originally going to direct before giving it to Peter Berg as his protege.

From the assault on the highway through the shootout in the apartments that is a very intense and well made fight sequence.

Eye of the beholder I guess. I thought the film moved along at a rather brisk pace.

Of course, Marion Cotillard was a bit of a distraction. :p

Berg is currently making "Lone Survivor", Marcus Luttrell's story.

While Michael Mann is undoubtedly a talented director etc, particularly in the action film realm, his support for Roman Polanski will likely make me going to see his future movies a no go.

What do you all think of some of the gun fights in Blackhawk Down? For me there were some pretty vivid scenes, the most memorable of these being Shughart and Gordon heroically defending the downed chopper pilot, and ultimately giving their lives just to give him a chance.

One of Michael Mann's earliest movies is "Thief" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thief_%28film%29) with James Caan. There is a great scene near the end of Caan's character clearing a house with a long slide 1911 using techniques taught by Chuck Taylor then of Gunsite. (http://www.imfdb.org/index.php?title=Thief)

The movie a great snapshot of many things from 1981 - the style, the camera work, the soundtrack is by Tangerine Dream and Caan in giving a "Best of Gunsite 1980" demo with an extreme Weaver stance, high thumbs and a custom 1911. I definitely suggest you give it a watch as a time capsule of movies and gun handling if nothing else.

Um... hello? The Matrix?

I don't care if it's unrealistic. Can anyone honestly say you watched that very first fight scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPtk7mweahY) without absolutely being amazed?

"No, Lieutenant. Your men are already dead."

It may seem commonplace or even a little stale now, but I remember seeing the original in the movie theater before the plot was widely known. You knew there was something weird going on, but...

Or how about "Guns. Lots of guns."

I can honestly say I am not a big fan of cartoon gunplay anymore. I am much more impressed by the more realistic movies mentioned. There is nothing terribly interesting in Rambo hanging off a .50 hosing down people.

This is going to sound really stupid, but there are some classic Steven Segal movies from back in the day where he kinda sorta actually demonstrates something sort of resembling training. I think I remember seeing him do a good press check with a 1911 and I think he showed a pretty solid Weaver type thing in a few.

And then he beat the shit out of 5 guys with a busted pool cue. Oh well.

I saw this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-cqeKct8v4) video a while back on youtube, from his short-lived reality show that I never bothered to watch. He's no ToddG, but he can shoot a little bit. Its sad that he schooled those cops.

Also, be forewarned - that video is basically 1911 porn.;)

Thats exciting, he brought TV my guiltiest pleasure, Friday Night Lights, and introduced Minka Kelly (http://www.esquire.com/women/the-sexiest-woman-alive/sexy-minka-kelly-pics-1110#img) to the world. Sigh.

I'm almost ashamed to say I really enjoyed Way of the Gun.

Not a gunfight by the scene in Gran Torino where Clint Eastwood fingerpoints the gang bangers and then hauls out the 1911 is über cool. Though that film sparks an unhealthy desire for a Garand and a bog stock 1911A1 in me :)

There was one great exchange in Appaloosa between Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen after a fast, furious gunfight with the bad guys.

"Well, that didn't take long. Yea, everybody could shoot". :)
