Model 38 Airweight, Bucheimer-Clark IWB holster. Had the holster for quite a while, just needed a J-frame to put in it! Gotta change those grips though.

Well, I was wrong and that turned out to be a good thing. I acquired the little gun under the pretense that it was factory engraved, but my research has determined this to be the work of John J. Adams Sr. .... which is much mo better.

JodyH how do you like the Kramer pocket holster?
Best pocket holster out there for J frames.
Has the perfect balance of retention to ease of release on the draw.
Only negative is it does very little to hide the profile (but a J frame profile is pretty discrete as is, so it's not that big of a deal).
The one pictured is at least 10 years old and still looks and feels brand new (looks and feels better than the revolvers i've carried in it over the years).

Mine is between 15 and 20 years old and I’ve been kicking around getting a new one. A couple times a year Kramer posts a sale on their Facebook page, I’ll probably do it then.

Mr. Williams said the amount of work that goes into doing right isn’t worth the money he makes off it. He charged me $122 that’s including return shipping. That’s a great deal I can’t imagine he made much profit off that transaction.

He did an excellent job. It shoots top of the blade POA-POI. The picture below is 2 cylinders at 7 yards. The 2 low hits were operator error.

What is that circle, between 3 and 4 inches? I’m not sure that getting 2 cylinders from a J into that circle at 7 exactly qualifies as error. I mean, sure, try to do better next time if you want, but your error is better than joe/jane mainstream American shooter’s good days. Just calling it like I see it. [/endthreaddrift]

It’s a 4” circle. For slow shooting (which is what that was) I consider that ok. Now if I could do that at speed, I would definitely be happy.

Definitely worth it. I’m into the gun for maybe $550 with the sight, stocks, and spring kit. I put it up for trade just to put some feelers out. I’ve always wanted and 357 and if I can get a 340 in trade I’d be willing to do that but not for anything less. Other than the 45 my dad gave me I really don’t get emotionally attached to guns.

I love the 340, but you’ll care a lot less about the capability to shoot .357 after you launch one for the first time, which you can simulate by having someone smack you in the hand with a sledgehammer.

I have a 60-9 LS .357. I have fired exactly 5 110gr Win JHPs, while the gun was wearing some rosewood boot grips. I don’t intend to do so again, just wanted to know. It wasn’t as obnoxious as I thought it might be, not even really painful, but shot-to-shot time was ridiculous, thought the gun is all steel. I can only imagine what a scandium revolver would be like with magnums, because I’m never going to do it.

I don't mind +P's (RA38B) in the 642-1 but I don't shoot scads of 'em. The level of sensitivity from one hand to the next seems to be extremely variable and doesn't appear to be particularly dependent upon size or thickness of the hand from the reports I read here.

Accurate statement.

Trooper buddy of mine carried a 340 as his backup gun. I fired exactly 2 magnum rounds through it... then handed it back with 3 left in the cylinder. Wwwwaaaayyyyy too much of a good thing. Magnums in an LCR are doable for me, but in the 340, no f-ing way.

I would say it's more like getting whacked across the palm by a piece or rebar. I shoot .44 magnum and rifle caliber pistols, so I'm not what you would call recoil sensitive. The only pistol that came close to the fun level of a 340 with magnums was a .375 JDJ Contender.

A buddy gave me a couple boxes of .44 Magnum ammo, which I was going to pass on to a friend. By the time I met up with friend #2, he'd sold his .44 Mag.

I keep looking at those boxes of .44 Mag ammo on my shooting gear shelf and thinking "There's only one real solution to this problem..."

Did your buddy find a 336 that was missing a rear sight? If not, he'd have a 336, and an extra 336 rear sight, and it seems like the whole thing could start over again...

Last range day of the year: 3" M36-1 and a 1 7/8" M36. The longer sight radius of the 3" gun is nice, but the laser grips on the short gun make any J-frame easy to shoot.

I haven't had any issue with them. They're spring steel so you can bend them inward to increase the pressure on the loader. I wear one with the loader aiwb rather than clipped to the outside of the belt. Hope this helps.

If you have a local guy that will do that for $50 and you don't have to pay any shipping that is a good deal.
OTOH, you could face your fears and take on a fun project.

The hardest part is the first file stroke, it really would be hard to screw it up (maybe gluing the sight on crooked, maybe). I am tempted to buy a 442 (about the only one I do not have...) just to do another one, sorta like putting together the second propane grill is really easy.

I will admit some beer was involved before the first file strokes and no beer was involved for the last file strokes.
I did it in several sessions, the first one I removed enough to be "committed" to the process.

About a month. I really like how the grooves guide my hand onto the grip during the draw and then grab when you grip down hard on them. Yet they don't snag on fabric. I have the same one's on 2 of my 1911's.

I just placed an order for the Icon. I absolutely love the DCC clips - have them on two other holsters. Thanks for the tip.

I've been using one for a few months and it's a nice little holster. It shares duty with a DSG j frame holster depending on the clothing and / or environment.

Have a Tenicor arriving today with DCC clips to try out for my Glocks.

Don't know about you, blues, but sometimes this here retirement gig is pretty sweet. Although I still work part time, I really dig sitting at home and buying stuff. Then, taking that stuff to the range. Now, if only there was an unlimited source of funds. I realize I'm giving you some material here for your usual quips. Hey! I could be "Ed McMahon" to your "Johnny Carson!"

I'm not the person you asked but I know the guy he got them from. The grips are Taurus boot grips that have had the medallion removed and the grip stippeled.

Yup. I put Taurus grips on all of my J-Frames. I pop the medallions out, put the grips on the gun, THEN stipple them. Stippling after they are on the gun sorta "forge welds" the seam of the grips together. I've bought a few sets off of eBay, and a couple sets from the classified section here.

Thought I'd be able to get along with my 638's boot grips but I actually hate them. What I really need is something to cover the backstrap. Gonna try a few different options, but more immediately, the LGS had hogues and a clipdraw.

Until the Brownells packages arrive this is my lounge around/lo profile gun that I'll occasionally jam into the pocket of my winter coat.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200110/f7dccf04dfeecd14dc54da139b018c17.jpg

Thanks MDFA. The real issue is trigger reach. If I take a two handed grip, my trigger finger can't fully stroke the DA trigger because it hangs up on my thumbs. The covered backstrap sets my thumbs further back.

Wow I had no idea. They are really comfortable but too large for front pants pocket carry.

The gun also came with a set of pearl handle grips. Which I proceed to drop on the garage floor and break when I got home from the shop.

I agree, that's why mine have seen little use in the 30+ years they've been in my grip inventory. However, they do such a good job at filling the space behind the trigger guard that I've kept them around for a future project. Some day I intend to shorten them so the bottom is flush with the frame.

Bought a brand new 340 online for $640 shipped and $20 bucks for the transfer Now I'm into this thing for $660. When I pick it up at my FFL I pull the trigger 3 times and on the third try the trigger doesn't reset. I take it home and can't get through a cylinder without it sticking. I swap out springs, clean it and lube it up but no joy. Now I'm a little upset so call the seller and of course no returns allowed but he refunds me $60 bucks for the "inconvenience". Now 3 weeks later and an extractor replacement by Smith and Wesson I have a working 340 for 600 bucks. Not a bad deal I guess.

I don't need a clip, I just need boot grips that wrap around the backstrap of the frame instead of the front strap. Took my 442 to the range last weekend and I can barely grip the thing and I can't find suitable grips for my large-ish hands. Gonna sell the J-frame a get another LCR.

Rather late to the party here, and apologies if this has been covered later in the thread. I am still working on 7-8 years of catchup reading here.

I noticed when I took the pic that both the holsters are stamped "TK" for Tony Kanaly. Each craftsman puts their mark on the holster they build. Kanaly worked for Milt Sparks for many years, eventually buying the shop from him when Milt retired. Now in the same tradition, a couple of the guys who worked for the shop for 20-25+ years bought the shop a few years ago. I am glad I have a few pieces of history with his mark on them.

Walmart 99 cent per bottle Acetone Nail Polish Remover and 0000 Steel Wool. It will take some time and elbow grease. Once I had finished I removed the side plate to flush the internals well and lube inside. Then I replaced the side plate and cylinder and waxed the exterior with car wax.

In retrospect I should have. I was pretty tired after dragging a chainsaw around most of the day so it got unloaded, wiped down, bore checked, and chambers checked. The next day it got a better cleaning and a range trip. To me it was a bit of an eye opener at how invasive dirt and dirt can be.

Time will tell. I will not purchase anything from them again. The website says 3 weeks, I messaged him to check before I placed the order and he said 4. It took 10 weeks.

The holster is pretty decent, wiah it covered the last sliver of trigger area better. Clip is solid. It cants a little with weight. After a day I can't say how itll work out. Anything is superb for comfort and concealment when the reference point is a 92.

I love my ZB J Frame holster. If you think waiting for his holster is bad, try sending in a clinch pick for mods. Took a long time. I did recently send in two more though, I like the work and these were spares.

How difficult was it to do? I see on the XS sight you need to drill the hole.

How difficult was it to do? I see on the XS sight you need to drill the hole.

I ordered .050" punches and a #54 drill bit from brownells. Drive out the pin. Put a cleaning cloth over the front sight and clamp vice grips to it. Hold the gun sight down over the end of the bench and smack the barrel a few times with a non maring hammer to knock the front sight loose. Scrape out as much of the old loctite as you can. The new sight won't fit. I used a diamond hone for a few swipes on each side until it was a snug press fit. Apply red loctite and use a padded vice to apply pressure for about a half hour ( wipe away whatever oozes out). Then drill halfway from each side and drive the pin back in. I used a hand drill at low to medium speed. One hole is slightly of center, so I kinda mangled the pin a bit, but it's all the way in, I just had to carefully dress the end with the diamond lap to remove a jagged edge.

Nice 640 Pro, those were my inspiration for this 640-1. Love that Black Bay GMT! I intended to buy one back in February but tried on the blue Pelagos at the AD and went with it instead. I want a GMT next, but am leaning towards a Grand Seiko, want to see if any new variants of the BB GMT come out next year. Anyway, here's my steel equivalent of the lightweight counterparts.

I acquired both of these J-frames in trade in December. A friend had a Tyler T-Grip he wasn't using so when he heard I wanted one he generously gave it to me. The square-butt model 36 got it and I have to say the feel is superb! It shoots about 2.5" low with our authorized .38 Special 135gr Gold Dot +P Short barrel load at seven yards but windage is dead on. I've only had a chance to shoot a few rounds through it so we'll see how it does at different distances but I'm not too disappointed with it. The action is smooth and it is in great working order. It will have no further changes.

It's partner is this model 60... This one shoots pretty much dead-on at 7 yards which made me very happy. I'm still debating what to do with the grip situation. Part of me wants to source another T-Grip and part of me wants to get a nice Rosewood grip for it. Hmmm.... It also feels pretty good with the Magna grips on it (they aren't the original ones).

SoCalDep - Those are sweet, especially the 36. :) You probably know this, but older J frames were regulated for 158-grain ammo, though 148-grain wadcutters usually hit to POA as well. If the GDs are all that's authorized, you just have to remember the difference.

Thanks! I figured there would be some elevation difference for the reasons you stated. I’m really happy that windage is dead on, because I can deal with minor variations in elevation.

My current 3 J-frames.

The bottom Model 60 was a gift from a family member.

The middle 342 was the first gun I ever purchased myself. Round about the time S&W made their deal with the devil.

The top 442-1 Performance Center is a recent acquisition with Lost River grip modification. Favorite of the 3.

It's been shortened and rounded somewhat.

There is just enough left to cock the hammer.
My first inclination is to bob it further and remove the SA notch.
On the other hand, the way that it is now works well for checking for high primers.
Time will tell.

I see the "remove the SA notch" a lot here. Don't know why though. If I want a bobbed hammer (and I often do) I bob it and then checker the top of it. I keep the SA notch for that longer range or precise shot, more precise than I can get with DA only. Maybe I'm just not a good enough shot?

Partly liability concerns, some cargo culting, a few policy requirements (eg. NYPD), and mostly people with too much time on their hands. I leave my single-action notches because I am too lazy to pull the hammer and grind on something which I can simply ignore. A friend leaves the notches for the same reason you do.

I believe with the SA notch removed and some polishing by a competent gunsmith (as part of an action job), you can get a slightly better double action pull. More importantly for me, is if given/loaned to a family member or friend, it eliminates the potential for someone to "ease back" the hammer with the trigger, catch it, and then try to cock it to fire single action and wind up incurring a negligent discharge or similar scenario.

There are also some rules in certain competitive circles that single action pull must be over a certain weight. With a nice double action pull, you may wind up exceeding this restriction.

Zulu Bravo?

Yes. You asked me about back when I first got it, and it's been over a year now. So I actually have some experience with it.

The holster is pretty great, honestly. A J frame is a small package, but it disappears with the ZB. The DCC clip is easy on/off too. The kydex has done a number on my J, but that's kind of to be expected. I was kind of bitter because his wait time was so much longer than what he told me, and was kind of let down when I finally received it "all that waiting... for this?" cause after it all it's just a holster. But it is a solid holster that has worked for me in T shirt and shorts, or when mowing lawns and not wanting to carry a giant gun. It's been an uneventful gun shaped bucket that hides the J. And I guess that's the goal right?

This is yet another thread drift, with which I'm proficient. After putting a green Crimson Trace Lasergrip (LG350G) on my M&P 340, I am struggling to activate the laser after acquiring "a normal firing grip," which, according to the manual (and everything else I have read about it), should activate the laser. Crimson Trace calls it "instinctive activation." I do have long fingers, but have never encountered a problem like this with any other firearm. It seems my middle finger's 2nd joint is directly over the button and the only way I can get the laser to turn on is by squeezing, with my support hand, so hard that everything shakes. Anything less - the laser goes off. Anybody else ever had this issue?

Somewhat. Getting it activated required a more deliberate grip and a finite amount of my very finite processing capability. It was only "instinctive" on a perfect grab, which to my mind negated one of the advantages of the revolver-its indifference to grip for reliable function.
It ended up being neither fish nor fowl to me.

I've got an LG-405 on my J, that works fantastic. Looking at the 350G it does appear much different.

I do experience similar issues with my LG-431 (LCP) that requires an odd, almost "H" grip to activate the laser. Unfortunately, that is not how I hold the little gun. There appears to be a newer version that looks to have a different button, which may make a difference. Not sure if I want to send mine in under warranty and have it replaced or not. BTW, in speaking with a CTC rep, they don't have a repair center, they offer replacement at 1/2 retail.

Check out the LG-405 if you can, any holding of the revolver activates mine. I would have preferred a green laser myself, but a 405 came up at a price I couldn't refuse.

This is positively my last thread drift, well, for THIS thread anyway. It's an update on my use of Sugru to build up the activation button on my M&P340 with the green LG350G Crimson Trace grips. This stuff is amazing! The only glitch was I had to use Gorilla Glue to make it stay put. The glue contained within the Sugru wasn't strong enough. I'm back to my normal grip on the little sucker, green dot and all. Thanks....one more time to jandbj.
