Took some .38 cases to the hardware store... in the hobby metals section they have stainless tubing 1/2" (.028 wall IIRC) that they fit perfectly in for $8. Will file the step and make a screwdriver looking handle so I can strip all five off and dump the empties in the range bag for later reloading.

Here's a good vid on a DIY mooner...

Ok, dude: if you don’t mind, you have got to let us know how the K6s treats you. We have yet to have an in depth review of one of these things around here, and clearly you have a wealth of experience with J-frames with which to give us a good comparison. Out with it, Retro; what do you think of the K6s?

I like the K6S quite a lot. Don't have but 500 rounds or so thru it. Been waiting on the SS to carry it regularly as the Desantis clip holster carried it too deep behind the belt. When I go to the range I shoot a cold Wizard first, with the K6S I use Silvertips and they shoot to POA and are not obusive. I will give it more workout and report back to ya.....................CYA Retro
PS. Compared to a j frame it is better and not as good. Better..same size 1 more round, tolerates magnum better than 640pro. Not as good....speed loaders work backwards, really don't plan on reloading anyway because it will go on the deck while I get a bug going.

You had me at Silvertips and not abusive. I can do the 145 winnies in my stock 3" 65-3, but they do cause some respectable muzzle flip.

My understanding is that the guys making the loaders will make them so they rotate the same way all us old HKS guys have been doing for decades, if you order them direct. Probably need to verify that somehow...

Hey There Mr. Pipes,

Are these specifically the "Summer Special" or the "Summer Special 2"? They do not have the raised sweat shield of the SS2 but look to have the replaceable loop of the SS2 instead of one integrated into the top band like the SS.

I have a Gemini 3" SP101 that doesn't get enough love, and long road trips in AIWB like you are using with your Js and Kimber might be a great role for it.

I found that a correctly sized (1/2") schedule 80 tubing/hose splice from the Home Depot sprinkler supply section works well as a mooner/de-mooner... and is far cheaper than buying thin wall steel tube. It's not a super tight fit on the .38 rounds, but close enough for me.

642-1, NP3 Plus coated with an Apex Duty/Carry Kit and LG-405. Loved the gun since I bought it, but not a fan of .38 Special.

https://i.imgur.com/rHaiERP.jpg

Saw a Pinnacle converted 9mm cylinder on AR15.com’s EE, so bought it, had it fitted, and sent to Robar to match it to the gun. In a sense, I have an Airweight Convertible. Very happy with the conversion, and 147 grain Hornady XTP works great out of it.

https://i.imgur.com/rjRKQWQ.jpg

Only other addition I made was a LaserMax Weapon Light (when I post that picture, always get “why do you have two lasers?”). Prefer a light on my carry guns, unless they are size restrained (LCP).

https://i.imgur.com/SmESRcF.jpg

One of two White Hat Holsters that I have setup for the gun with light; other is AIWB. Very happy with them, but seeing some of the previous post going into it, I always had a hard time with carrying reloads.

https://i.imgur.com/bUDnXNv.jpg

These are from Del Fatti Leather (Matt over there is a good guy), and can be picked up for 9mm or .38/.357. Similar to what jandbj posted, but I like these a little better. The post extends past the back of the rounds. Makes orientation easy, but getting the clip out is probably as easy as can be... hold the clip with your thumb/middle finger, push post with trigger finger. Tried other methods, including the belt posts (which I liked after this one, but just sits out there too noticeably; retention was great after bending the posts closer to the body) and others... prefer the Del Fatti ones. Just easy to toss three in a pocket and not worry about crap getting tangled up or bending the clips.

Yea, guys on S&W Forum consider a gun like mine a 942 (Airweight in 9mm).

One was made, and Wiley Clapp was given it to test. Told S&W nobody would buy it (if I remember correctly, was due to recoil; crazy, since mine shoots smooth... however, standard pressure ammo). Design was shelved.

If that ever came to market, I would love to get some info from the seller/buyer. Just would love to see what, if any, differences were present over a standard 642.

Sorry for the wait bud... yes...

Opened 4 times. Apex action kit for about 1200 rounds (after around 300 before trigger kit install).

I'm pretty sure it had 10,000+ dryfire trigger pulls. I recall seeing inclusions in the snapped portion of the stud that made me question if it was injection metallurgy... but that is complete speculation based on my memory/observations at the time.

I've broken once myself, always been curious how durable or delicate they are. When watching the Apex j frame kit vids on youtube, the 642 pins didnt look at shiny as the 340 pins.

I never used snap caps with that first gun. With it's replacement, I never dry-fire without snap caps.

It's probably just superstition... but I figured why not.

Malamute
03-19-2018, 07:23 PM
Made me curious. Weird things seem to happen sometimes when dry fired with no snap caps or primer to take the shock of the hammer fall or striker fall, or the hammer pins breaking on some AR uses like 22 kits or 9mm blowbacks. Dry firing a lot without caps can break Ruger single action transfer bars, some glock breech faces have cracked. Doesnt seem like just that much difference would be enough to break parts, but it seems to be changing the impact effect of the action parts operating.

I decided to just not dry fire anything without caps after breaking several Ruger transfer bars, despite multitudes of people, including the factory saying its OK and "Rugers are bombproof" being repeated constantly.

Grabbed some VZs for the 442 but wasn't thrilled with the huge hump on the starboard side as it interfered with my holster and wanted a better shelf for my thumb when shooting offhand. Decided to to take them to the grinder and re-shape them a bit as well as break some of the sharp edges. I think they came out great.

Looks like the Dehaven & Dehaven I just ordered off Etsy. I've decided to add a j-frame back into my world after at least 10yrs without one, went looking for something cheap/good enough to keep my acid sweat off it until I get a Summer Special for it.

Thoroughly enjoying my new 442PC-tune. Ran a bunch of 148gr wadcutters through it and a couple of different Hornaday hp's. Shot my best group with the Critical Defense. The holster is the one I mentioned above and it'll do as a placeholder.

Still mulling over grips. I got to hold j's with both VZ and Hogue G10's, kinda surprised that I liked the Hogues better. I'd love to find a set of stag Fitz Gunfighters, but google has given me no joy thus far. Does anyone have experience with the Pachmayr G10s? How about Craig Spegel's Centennial grips? The way they rise up on the frame is intriguing, worth the $$ and the wait?

The sage 2, especially that framelock version, is one of the greatest urban EDCs ever produced. It’s like the G26 of clipits.

I have one buddy on another forum who’s bought and sold something like 6 of them; he keeps itching for something else, because he’s a total gear queer, then realizes he’s made a mistake! I bust his balls about it all the time. But, I digress; you really need to get one in your hand to realize how well all the specs come together in that particular size/design. God forbid I should ever be limited to just one pocketknife for the rest of days, but if something so absurd were to pass, that Sage 2 would be it. JMO.

I did the very same thing last month.
What a difference in the trigger

It’s night and day. I took a dremel with a buffing wheel and polishing compound to the trigger return spring housing on both sides it makes contact with the frame, put a drop of lube on both sides, and greased up the springs as suggested in the Apex install video. The trigger feels fantastic now. I wish I had a way to measure the weight.

Holmes375
09-16-2018, 08:14 PM
I did my most recent J frame just after I bought it. Out of the box it exceeded the 12 lb max on my Lyman digital. After the Apex kit and internal polishing it yielded 9 lbs-5 oz. After several hundred rounds it currently yields 9 lbs-1 oz.

Break weight is only a part of the story though. Smoother throughout, breaks clean and stages nicely if that's important to you. I also removed the trigger while I was at it, softened the edges and polished the face. Feels oh so nice. :D

340PD & 43C. A good carry/practice combo. Precision Gun Specialities Hideout Grip on both. The 340 has Apex Tactical Duty/Carry Spring Kit, 5,000 rounds of internal polishing, and don't know how many more dry fire polishes. They were good days at S&W when these two J's were built. I've had other J's built on bad days. These are keepers.

I never meant for my 442 to be a pimp pistol, but, well, there it is. I'm not a fan of the two tone, but some fuckers convinced me that the PC-tune trigger job on the limited run was worth it, so I bought it on a CDNN sale for half the price of the 351c I was saving up for...and yeah, it's definitely got the nicest action I've ever felt on a j-frame.

It was my first time with paint pens, so the multiple layers on the front sight are too thick and sloppy, but you can't tell when you're aiming it.

I can't find a a set of grips that make my hand happy, so right now it's wearing a pair of borrowed G10 panels with a BK grip adapter making it waaayyy to slippery to hold onto, so it's only true value right now is in a winter coat pocket where I plan to shoot through the pocket as opposed to drawing the lil bar of wet soap... but at least it's pretty, in an unintentionally pimpy sort of way.

Ha! Well, I was 30ft up a tree in my Summit Viper in the dark at the end of a deer hunt and as I was packing up to climb down I heard this massive ruckus at the base of the tree. Not wanting to climb down to certain death by a bear or something, I shined my light down to see the armored leprosy bearer. Fearing for my life (or at least my nose and appendages) I drew my trusty 642 and put a 130gr +P Winchester Bonded right through his heart and lungs (moving head was a bit small target). He froze initially, then went into the death rolls and ended up in that hole. And that, as they say, was that.

The nickel is a pre-model 10 M&P that's had the barrel cut to 3" and the hammer semi-bobbed. The black one is a Model 12.

What issue are you having with the LCR? Adding a wing to a snubby holster may have some negative affects as it increases the ability of the belt to force the gun into the body as it rotates the grip in. A Tuckstrut would be the preferred method to give a little boost in concealment should there be some printing. Foam may be a better intermediate step too.

I’ve actually got a 1/4” foam pad and the wing with 1 DCC clip and it worked wonders. I was wearing a white Hanes undershirt around the house the other day concealment was 100%.

A while back I got on a kick to get another J-frame for reasons. I think J-frames are changed significantly by adding a bit more grip, so having an extra one so my 638 could keep its boot grips made sense, at least to my twisted brain. And I thought it might be neat to have a companion to the M60-NoDash that was my dad's, about the only cool gun he didn't sell late in life when he went all-in on camera gear. And I snagged a 637 on sale when they had a rebate so I think I paid only $275 before the transfer.

Part of the plan was to try and put on the XS Big Dot that "requires" milling. A friend helped me do my 638 and when we were done it seemed like it woulda been easier to just file the thing, so that is what I did on the 637. Somewhere along the way I sold something to somebody and had some frivolous cash and I took the plunge on a 360PD, and that sorta stalled my progress on the 637. But now it is done and I think it turned out well and is pretty neat:
35153
It has the sight, Apex kit and Altamont grips. If I photograph the right side you can't see the lock...

Here are some views of the sight:
35154
The view on the left shows the basics of the filing, at this stage I was probably 85% done. It took longer than I expected but was a fun project. I tried the "matting" with a file and hammer but couldn't get it to look the way I wanted so I went back to stippling like I did on the 638.

Anyway, I feel like I have "owed" this thread some pictures, and here you go :)

Got my Aholster in last night. THIS is the answer for pocket carry of a J-frame. After finding Mika’s to be too thick I had gone back to the milk jug for awhile. Still not 100% satisfied I looked some more and ordered the Aholster. Disappears beautifully even in jeans and the hooks work great to retain the holster!

I’ve got a pocket Aholster for the LCP and love it. Ordered a pocket Aholster for a J-frame to do some comparison testing between the LCP and my friend’s 642. Definitely looking forward to it coming in as unless I can find a solution to keep two fingers on the frame AND guarantee reliability, I’ll probably be moving to a J-frame.

Debating on ordering some Silvertips, or just stoking it with Ranger Bonded and/or 135gr Gold Dot .38's I already have on hand. Probably wont see a ton of full house .357, but I do plan on loading up some 170gr Keith for desert/woods bumming.

How did you decide on this one over the backbone from Aholster?

How did you decide on this one over the backbone from Aholster?

No real great reason, but these were my thoughts:

1. More gun exposure in a pocket holster means more lint/debris in the gun
2. That lower lip (under the cylinder cutout) looks like it's just waiting to snag on the trigger in re-holstering

Thank you I have their holster for my 43. I had looked at them for a my Model 60 but when I emailed the owner he told me neither would fit. I have since gotten a 642 so another Aholster is in my near future. I will certainly keep your ideas in mind.

Sweat, but may as well have been a swim. A LOT less humidity today, so I guess I'll find out in a little bit if that is going to make a difference.

I should probably put a thin coat of oil on the release now that I'm thinking about it....

Yes, the 340 is available without a lock and is the only one I would purchase (since it would see a lot of carry).

I had an M&P 340 and sold it. It was a stupid move, I really miss that gun and I will have another. If you’re only going to have one J Frame I think that’s the way to go.

Since you already have a 642 (I think?) though, maybe go all out and get the 340 PD for the lightest possible pocket gun?

Edit...I have a 340 PD without the lock. Both 340s are available that way, just saying...

Thank you for the enabling...just when I had a few minutes without pondering the issue...:p

The PD is not really in the picture though I'm sure I wouldn't turn one down if someone decided to gift me one.

(I had a fairly serious injury to the heel of my strong hand a couple years back and while recoil with the 642 and +P hasn't bothered me, I'm not going to look to push the envelope further. I'm grateful that I had little lasting damage beyond scarring.)

Got this the other day. Shined up outside and inside.

Nice work on the polish. What did you use & how long did it take? I may do that to mine when time permits.

Simichrome polish applied with surgical cotton swabs. T-shirt rags for first buff. 2” X 2” Ultra Polish Pad (Amazon) For second buff, Rag Company Mini-Miner Professional Metal Polish Towel for finish. Plus a lot of Tequila to pass the time.

This came in today after seeing it mentioned here from CDNN. Need to figure out what I want to do for new grips.

There are a lot of great options. My personal favorites are the uncle mike boot grips. They have been discontinued but still pop up,for sale from time to time. I have a performance center 642 and it wears the uncle mikes.

Posted this 49 when I first got it. Figured I'd share again now that I have it more integrated into my carry options. I also just got the Tyler T grip adapter in after a few months of waiting. In the gun I'm running federal gold medal match wadcutters with the last round being a more stout fmj. Running fmj in the speed strip due to ease of loading with speed in mind. Both projectiles hitting POA. PHLster city special AIWB with a surfire EDCL2-T in the left pocket with the speed strip. Not pictured is a SOFTT-W run out of left back pocket. When the weather cools down I'm usually running a Ryker ankle IFAK.

edit: i also apparently suck at posting pictures. it dosnt like to cooperate with my full rez pics so if i take a screenshot it will post but then you end up with this abomination of an image... you get the idea tho.
