I really hope this doesn't suck. Hopefully this is more '13 Hours' and less 'Strike-Back'.

The Global Recon podcast (https://soundcloud.com/global-recon/grp-83-the-iranian-embassy-siege-sas-staff-sergeant-rusty-firmin) had the leader of blue team on the siege just recently. Interesting listen if you've the time.

Depends on what you mean by politically correct. I found that it had some moral ambiguity, and characters that while highly functional at their jobs, were pretty dysfunctional otherwise, kinda like real life.

It also had lots of boobs.

By PC I mean not identifying the real evil we face, saying men and women are the same (yes men and women are equal lol ), portraying non leftists as radicals , etc. you know , mainstream thought.

I like boobs at least as much as any other guy, but the sex in Strike Back was almost 100% superfluous in terms of the story. It seemed like they were trying to meet a minimum skin quota per episode or something.

Before they moved into the era of reviewing yachting socks, Playboy was definitely worth a read. Unfortunately, I was about 10 when the irrelevant era crept around (e.g., the birth of the world wide web), and I missed out on all the intellectual shit. Now I just listen to NPR, and have a subscription to porn sites on the side.

I can't speak for Heyscooter, but I'm going to danger that we're coming at it from the same lens and background.

While 13 Hours was a well done flick, it had some pretty glaring and intentional inaccuracies. The inaccuracies are overtly offensive to many individuals.

A while ago SeanM said not to believe any sort of "documentary" that is first in the business of making money; I understand what he's talking about now that I'm actually on the job.

I've always enjoyed the various Osprey Elite books since I was a kid. This was a good read, with a number of photographs I hadn't seen before, as well as some interesting details (e.g. one of the SAS troopers experienced a first round stoppage with his MP5 necessitating transition to the Browning Hi-Power to finish the fight).

Who Dares Wins: The SAS and the Iranian Embassy Siege 1980 (Raid) (https://www.amazon.com/Who-Dares-Wins-Iranian-Embassy/dp/1846033950/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1499742564&sr=8-2&keywords=osprey+elite+raid)

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81FvpsE3l2L.jpg

The Imperial War Museum in London also has a neat display on the raid, including one of the models used to plan the operation. One of my favorite museums (terrific WWI exhibit).

Chance, sorry for threadjacking for a bit there. Back on topic: I think the trailer looks pretty cool. A couple of years ago, I happened across a documentary of the siege. I was completely blown away by how fast the SAS tooled up and constructed mock-ups of the embassy and how hard they drilled for the take-down.

HK should thank this incident for why all the "cool kids" had to have MP5's after seeing them in the hands of the SAS.

I loved Strike Back. It was ridiculous and I found it highly entertaining. Fortunately, I have the ability to pull the tactical tampon out of my mangina and relax when it comes to entertainment. I enjoyed 13 Hours. I went in knowing it was a Michael Bay film, so I was slightly surprised Optimus Prime and Marky Mark didn't show up to save the day, with an underage hottie wearing booty shorts in tow. Was it authentic? Couldn't say, I wasn't there.

I was stoked to see 6 Days when I first saw the trailer a while back. I ran into some SAS blokes back during my servitude to Uncle Sugar and I liked those boys a lot, characters all. Will it be accurate? Don't know, I was fifteen at the time and far away, but I bet it will entertain.

Very glad to see The Final Option finally get mentioned. I think I first saw it in a theater in West Germany, with German sub-titles. Later I ended up with a VHS copy that long ago died.

I read the gentleman's book that I linked to earlier. He is not Mark Bowden (I finished 'Guests of the Ayatollah (https://www.amazon.com/Guests-Ayatollah-Hostage-Americas-Militant-ebook/dp/B008UX8GH8/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1502152405&sr=1-1&keywords=guests+of+the+ayatollah)' not too long ago; probably the best recounting of a prolonged hostage crisis one could hope for), but he does give a pretty good idea of what the circumstances were by the time the rescue was launched. He does a good job describing how hostage situations are handled with regard to negotiations, et cetera (at least as I understand them based on other things I've read (https://www.amazon.com/Stalling-Time-Life-Hostage-Negotiator-ebook/dp/B003EY7JE4/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1502153072&sr=1-1&keywords=stalling+for+time)), but I would have liked more information on who the hostages and the terrorists were, as individuals.

His description of the raid is pretty good, but I have no idea how accurate it is: I'm told by folks in the know that the British investigation into the outcome is withering in detail, but all of that is classified, so I have no way of knowing one way or the other. His description of some of the things that went wrong is very interesting.

Amongst the SAS, there was at least one suspected ND, one self-inflicted GSW, and one failure-to-fire. The Red Team leader famously got hung while abseiling down a wall, and then suffered burns when curtains inside the embassy caught on fire. A number of assaulters were saved because pins weren't removed from grenades. There were a number of other revelations, but I don't have the book in front of me. The stumbles they made are refreshingly honest, and it just goes to show that the best of the best will stumble.

All-in-all, it's worth a read. I'm curious to see how well the dramatization holds up.

It isn’t showing anywhere close to me but is available for purchase (iTunes). I purchased a copy and it’s a good movie. I particularly liked the order not to use smoke grenades to screen the assault force from the tv cameras because PM Thatcher wanted people to see what happens to terrorists that do bad things. The presenting of an emotional conflict for a negotiator to set someone up for the intervention unit is a little annoying to me but it is a movie. It’s worth a watch.

Down to brass tacks I'm pretty sure 99.9% of people here agree the best terrorist is a dead one. We're not the common weenies that think differently; I'm sure the raid twisted many a panty.

Just watched it, was bored tonight and have no weekday social life aside from using my dog's ass as a pillow to watch TV.

I rather enjoyed it, but I tend to like tense "based on true events" movies where the good guys fuck up the bad guys (I liked whoever recommended The Infiltrator, while it may not have won every award ever I was entertained and stressed the whole movie). The SAS embassy raid is about as "good guys fucking up bad guys" as it gets, so it's a win in my book.

It gets Peally's 'I usually hate most movies but not this one' seal of approval ;)
