Week 224: The Wizard Drill

Results may be posted until August 7th, 2017.

Designed by: Ken Hackathorn
Range: 3-10 yards
Target: IDPA with 4" circle added to the head
Start Position: Facing downrange, hands hanging naturally
Rounds Fired: 5

This drill is actually a test, intended to determine competency with realistic equipment. It is supposed to be shot cold, with carry ammo, and with duty or concealed carry gear.

Start position for all strings is facing downrange, hands at sides. Shooters using pocket-carried handguns may start with the hand already on the gun. Par time is 2.5 seconds for all strings.

String 1, 3 yards: Draw and fire one shot to the head, strong hand only.
String 2, 5 yards: Draw and fire one shot to the head, freestyle.
String 3, 7 yards: Draw and fire one shot to the head, freestyle.
String 4, 10 yards: Draw and fire two shots to the body, freestyle.

The Wizard is scored pass/fail. To pass, you must be under the par time on all strings, and have no more than two points down. The 4" circle in the head and the 8" circle in the body (-0 zones) are no penalty. Shots in the head (but out of the circle) or in the -1 zone are one point down. Shots to the -3 zone and misses are an automatic fail. Overtime shots are an automatic fail.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Equipment used: gun, holster, concealment, and ammo
Pass or Fail
Number of points down
Anything you noticed

I just had time to step out back and shoot this before the rains came.

Gen 4 G-26, pocket carried in an AHolster in Duluth Flex Fire Hose Work pants. Federal 147 grain HST.
I guess fail on my first run. On string 1, I started with my hand at side instead of holding the gun as allowed with pocket carry. I was over time at 2.68. I was 1 point down at 10 yards.
Second run was pass with no points down and well within the time.
Anything I noticed. I really like Glock 26's. I can shoot them almost as well as a full sized pistol. I have been pocket carrying this for about a year now.

I had 1 round left in the G-26, so I stepped up on the porch and fired it at my 16" square plate at 40 yards. A hit about 2 or 3 inches off center. :)

Because hard, I doubled the round count, and cleaned it twice that way, barely.

The 8 ring of the B8 is 8". And hat tip to Tom for making up the orange colored version.

What I want to know, is why it is called The Wizard.

Anything you noticed: Don't have my times in front of me right now, but I noticed that I shot the last string the fastest which I wouldn't have guessed before I started. Good, fast, low round count drill. Thanks for posting this.

target is an 4" circle from a "finding your level" target and an 8.5" paper plate(the white is 8")

Run 1

1. 1.92 miss
2. 1.87 miss
3. 1.95 clean
4. 2.35 clean

I was high right on both of the first two strings (sho and 5 yards freestyle to the 4" circle). Honestly I assumed I would miss the par on the sho string, only because I don't shoot much sho and wasn't sure where I was at. But the miss at 5 was inexcusable. Really both were, as I would rather be over time than miss. Which is why I hate the idea that 2 misses are excepted but any shot over time is an auto fail. Not happy with the results I got, on what I consider a relatively easy test, I ran it again.

1. 2.07 clean
2. 2.01 clean
3. 2.03 clean
4. 2.58 clean but fail for time

Damn. I'm glad that I cleaned it but the damn time on string 4 made it a failing run....damn eye sprinting got me. So a third run.

1. 2.34 clean
2. 1.98 clean
3. 1.98 clean
4. 2.55 clean but failure due to time

At this point I wasn't willing to put any more ammo or efforts into it today, though I may come back at another time to clean it. I dislike that having cleaned the first three strings on the last two runs that I could have just banged out two quick misses under time on the 8" and as long as they were close misses then it would be a passing run.

I'll edit pictures in from my phone shortly. The second picture is the first and second runs as I didn't paste between the runs but did for the third run...

I've only been shooting the red dot since May so I'm still struggling with getting on target quickly. My second run was with iron sights. Although this wasn't complely cold, it was the first time I shot irons since April.

My training buddies and I shoot this modified so any miss is a fail.

I shot this with my Beretta PX4, JMCK IWB holster, using an unbuttoned shirt as a cover garment. Ammunition today was a mismash of stuff I had left, but I do believe I shot this drill with Fiocchi 115gr 9mm ball.

I failed. :(

I had no trouble making the par time, but my shooting was atrocious. Points down: 4.

I felt a bit "off" during the whole range trip today. Nothing major but I not quite my peak performance today. Blame it on the heat, I guess?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170723/6e684c5524572bb6946e8902eb06b5a6.jpg

Anything you noticed: I failed on so many levels with this test. First I did not run it cold, second I did not use carry ammo, third I ran it thee times, and finally I could not get the 10 yard shots in the time limit.

Equipment used: Gen4 GLOCK 19 in Safariland ALS OWB holster, "FBI spec"(a little lower in front). Concealed under CCC vest, loaded with Winchester 147 gr.ammo. Timer set to 2.5 seconds. Cold, first(and only) shots of the day.
1st run: Fail; no points dropped, 10 yard 2 shots in 2.57 seconds-all other strings under time.
2nd run: Shot immediately, to see if I could make the 10 yard shots; down one point at 10 in 2.28. Pass.
Notes: I had a business trip, driving all week. Religiously dryfired daily, BUT did NOT have target at 10 yards-not enough room in hotel room. My overtime shot on first run was partially due to my perfecting my sight picture at 10 yards, and being too deliberate.
I like this test, shoot it roughly monthly. I will shoot it again, cold, but earlier in the day, not after hours of driving(excuses, excuses...)

I had another go at this today. Same gun, same gear, ammo was Fiocchi 123gr ball ammo this time.

Again, I had no trouble making the PAR times, but my shooting was again atrocious. Points down: 3. Result: FAIL

Equipment: Same as Post #14 above:Gen419, etc.
One run, cold(did not even dryfire this AM, as had to get to work): PASS, down one point at 10 yards (2.33 seconds)-clean, first three strings.
Notes: Got to range at lunchtime, felt rested, unlike Friday. Point down at 10 yards was very close to second attempt last week(low left, and I am a right handed shooter). I think I am "mashing"/forcing the trigger on the second shot to ensure making time-in other words, the Wizard is getting in my head...
This indicates to me that I should/will work on two shots to center at 10 yards with the objective to be "clean" in around two seconds. Additionally, work out to further distances.
