I'm working on my sixth novel and a plot device using ammonium nitrate. My antagonist finds a barge that was lost in 1992, loaded with forty-thousand pounds of fertilizer, (46-0-0) in 100 pound bags. I have the stuff weakened by nitrogen loss over 25 years.
Two questions?
Would the Urea actually lose potency? The bags are plastic and were out in the weather on top of a barge.
Is there a way to reconstitute it, or concentrate the remaining nitrogen?

Also, be assured I won't give out instruction in the novel. I just want to know if it is realistic scenario.
