I have to post this DotW a couple of days early. There have been a few discussions about DA/SA, advantages/disadvantages/etc. lately, so this seems like a good one to try.

Week 220: Changing Gears

Results may be posted until July 9th, 2017.

Designed by: Todd Louis Green
Range: 5 yards +
Target: Two 3x5 cards
Start Position: Holstered
Rounds Fired: 20-60

This drill was developed primarily to address the DA/SA transition for traditional double action pistols. However, it is also valid for SA, DAO, and SFA guns.

Begin holstered at 5yd. Draw and fire one shot to the first 3x5 card, keeping the trigger pulled all the way to the rear after the shot is fired. Aim at the second card, then allow the trigger forward to reset, and fire one round at the second card. Repeat for a total of ten pairs (20 shots). Compare the group size/location between your first card (which should be ten single shots from the draw) and your second card (which should be ten single shots from reset).

If you got all your hits on both cards at 5yd, repeat the process at 7yd. If you score 100% hits at 7yd, increase to 10yd and repeat again.

The primary goal for this drill is to make the shooter aware of the difference between the trigger's movement from rest (fully forward) and from reset (fully back). If the two 3x5 cards at a given distance look substantially different (e.g., if one card has all hits and the other has many misses; or, one has a centered group and the other is grouped low left), then you know that you're doing something different in the way you manipulate the trigger when transitioning from first shot to follow-up shots.

If you cannot draw from the holster, instead begin from a ready position.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:
starting position (ready position, open holster, retention holster, or concealed)
number of misses for each card at 5yd
number of misses for each card at 7yd (if scored 100% at 5yd)
number of misses for each card at 10yd (if scored 100% at 7yd)

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

starting position (ready position, open holster, retention holster, or concealed): concealed
number of misses for each card at 5yd: 0
number of misses for each card at 7yd (if scored 100% at 5yd): 1 each. I think I missed one on the first card. I count 9 hits, but couldn't find my miss (I'm hoping it wasn't that bad)

Still work to do. Wasn't happy with the results so worked on DA press outs more. The more I think about when pressing out the first shot the worse the results.

Also I tend to not tighten up the pinky finger on my strong hand when I take my grip. Not sure when I started doing this but it's a difficult habit to break. Often results in breaking the shot low because the pinky moves as I press the trigger.

I screwed this up at 5 yards and threw two DA shots just over the top of the index card. All SA shots hit the card.

All strings were Da on the left card, Sa on the right.

I called the high shot on the da portion at 10. Anticipated and jerked 2 low on the sa side, swung to far and went right on the 3rd. I felt it being close at 7 so i knew 10 would most likely have a Mike or two, but i thought it'd be more even. I had to focus hard to avoid eye sprinting and was mostly successful.

I enjoyed it and will add it to the list of drills to remember in the future. I did notice my da shots were a bit more spread out until the 10 yard string, whereas my sa were more in the center of the card, again until 10 yards where i randomly scattered them about. I dig the lack of a wall on da shots , even know the single action is lighter i still tend to anticipate more of the sa shots it feels like.

***the shots in the lower A between the cards were from other shooting

The results of this one surprised me. I felt that my shots from the draw on the first card (left) were more consistent than my shots from reset on the second card (right).

I did something similar to this DotW at the range. Only I shot from 25 meters, in two sets of 10 rounds. Starting position was from a ready stance. And the results were kind of surprising.

I seem to be unable to add pictures to my post except as attachments. The order of the pictures is: first five DA shots, first five SA shots, second five DA, second five SA.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170625/d58d959e843fc03193e67eddc8caf183.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170625/4a063355121ac77018cc1335ae9974b6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170625/2b780d676e947888158676d49750494a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170625/89b10c75c29a043f020031d76a264867.jpg

It looks like 10/10 to me. I think you're counting the upper right as 2 hits, looks like 3.

One thing I'm learning from these drills is that I have a hard time remembering and following instructions. Ran this from Ready at 5 yds twice without even thinking to move it to 7 yds.

I took my time on the shots because a) I wanted to get hits and b) I was focused on the trigger reset. Even with the focus I fouled things up by allowing a full reset on one of the strings.

I liked this because as the drill progressed I gained confidence and was naturally increasing the pace as my confidence increased.

Starting Position - Ready
number of misses for each card at 5yd - zero, zero
number of misses for each card at 7yd - na
number of misses for each card at 10yd - na
