View Full Version : 2012 Performance Challenge

ToddG
12-31-2011, 12:32 PM
Acknowledging that performance improvements over time are more important than spot assessments, pistol-forum.com is presenting the 2012 Performance Challenge. The purpose is to measure raw accuracy, speed, and gun handling at the beginning and end of the year to see if your efforts on the range are actually paying off.

The drills used will be the Bullseye Threeway (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?2454-DotW-11-Bullseye-Three-Way) (aka "300") and the F.A.S.T. (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?2569-DotW-13-The-F-A-S-T)

STEP ONE:
In January 2012, shoot the 300 twice and the F.A.S.T. three times in one day. Repeat on a second day during the month. You will have a total of four 300 scores and six F.A.S.T. scores. Find the average and report it.

STEP TWO:
In December 2012, repeat the process to get four more 300 scores and six more F.A.S.T. scores. Find the average and report it for comparison.

Just like the DotW, we will announce a prize for a randomly selected member who participates in both January and December. The cut off for reporting January results is noon EST on 1-Feb-12.

For the Threeway, you want all three strings - TH, SH, WH - be shot on the same day twice ( DoW description says shoot on three separate days)?

Don't know. Either hallucinations, or dyslexia, or anticipatory intoxication.

On a related note, has anyone used Mike Seeklander's training program? I'm going to start it this month.

Dumb question, is the 300 to be shot off hand, or is kneeling/sitting permitted?

ToddG

Prdator -- I considered mandating use of the same gun at both ends of the challenge, but I don't know if I'll be shooting the same gun come December. And really, if you switch guns (assuming you're using your normal carry gun) then it's legitimate to see how you shoot with it.

GJM -- I'd never really given it any thought, but the drill was certainly intended to be shot off hand standing.

I'm in. After a dismal score in the Bullseye Three Way followed by a strong showing in the FAST DotW, its apparent that my skill set is horribly lopsided. I plan to take a stab at the IDPA Classifier this year, so the SHO and WHO practice needed to improve my BTW will be time well spent.

I forgot to shoot the 2nd 300, so I have to get back to the range and do that part over still. Hopefully I will do better.

the DotW was a great idea and turning it into a performance challenge is even better. I'm bummed that the indoor ranges by me will not let you draw from a holster or rapid fire so I'm limited in the drills I can participate in.

Either/or. I'll probably post in both. Some folks might participate in the Challenge but not have a journal.

I shot the FAST for the first time ever last week, but I dont have the results from then. I shot the first set of scores for the performance challenge tonight. I had not shot since 1-8-12. The 300 were my first rounds. I do not have a 25yd indoor range so the 300 was shot at 50ft. All shot with a G17rtf2 from my cop belt with Safariland 6360.

300=277
2h=95
SHO=92
WHO=90
300 #2=231

SHO=87
WHO=53

I had some concentration issues on the second go around and thew a few mikes off the repair center WHO.

FAST
first and third runs the gun failed to lock to the rear, I need to clean the mags as the followers seem a little slow.

1.96/.84/2.5/.28/.30/.27/total 6.15 clean
2.02/.71/3.29/.30/.29/.28/total 6.89 clean

I was waiting for far to fine a sight picture on the head shots as all my rounds were in the PT logo of the FAST target.

I will shoot the second stage next week.

I shot round 1 for January this morning, and as expected I choked down a big piece of humble pie. This was the first time I have ever shot either of the prescribed drills. I made a last minute change on my weapon of choice, and went with my Glock 35 over my 34. I've got more rounds through the 35 than all of my other pistols combined, and just a few weeks ago I put the Ameriglo Pro-Idots on it. (As money allows I plan to outfit all four of my carry/ comp guns with these sights, so it just makes sense to do the performance challenge with them.)

With all of that out of the way, here's my round 1 results:

FAST #1: 7.64 Clean
FAST #2: 6.58 Clean

FAST average so far: 7.11

300 #1: 84, 65, 43= 192
300 #2: 61, 71, 51= 183

300 average so far: 187

The FAST head shots seem to be the first place to make up ground. I was shooting from GOOD concealment and my fleece got in the way of my reloads just a bit, but the head shots and my press out are going to me my immediate focus.

I expected the 300 to be rough and I wasn't disappointed. I practice WHO shooting a good bit, but only from 10 and in. I'd like to blame some of my poor performance on getting used to the new sights, but strangely when I focused on the front sight and put it where I wanted to bullets to go they went there. Plain and simple I need to work on my 25 yard shooting in every format.

After I did the prescribed drills, I worked on my press out a bit. I drew and fired one round on 8" steel plates for 40 rounds. My best time was 1.11, which I was very pleased with.

Here are my FAST targets...

It is now pathetically obvious what happens when you don't practice... I shot this "COLD" in both ways; no shooting or meaninful dry practice since October, and outdoors with temp in the 20's (which were actually nice days). Used my Colt from conealment under a heavy Carhartt hoodie and a softshell.

This is the first set of drills. I hope to get the second day in yet this month. Lousy cold weather. :(

300 scores:
2H 96 4x, SHO 73, WHO 83 2x. Total 252
2H 91 1x, SHO 72 1x, WHO 89 1x. Total 252

Fast:
2.41, .76, 2.52, .30, .26, .24 6.49 -1H = 8.48
2.41, .59, 2.79, .32, .29, .27 6.67 -1H = 8.67
2.34, .71, 2.59, .31, .27, .25 6.47 -2H = 10.47

I was a little surprised that my weak hand scores were better than strong hand scores both times. I need a lot of practice drawing to 3x5 cards. ;)

For some reason I just saw this - I will have to do the first set of drills in Feb. Since I haven't been shooting as much as I want/need to, the results won't be affected (other than the fact that I will have 1 month less to improve for the Dec. Drills).

My SHO and WHO needs serious work. They really brought my average down so that's clearly an area that will get some attention. I had two FAST runs over 10secs due to misses. I had two clean runs, 6.01 and 6.65, which are by far my fastest FASTs. I have the potential I just have to get there. I had an intermediate score at AFHF in Sept. 2011 and this year I'd like to make the Advanced Wall of Fame but I've obviously got some work to do.

I have been inconsistent recently. At some points in the session I shoot above my normal level of competence giving peaks of improvement and other times I plain stink the place up. In the last IDPA match this month, it was stage by stage. Some stages I couldn't be beat; others I may as well stayed home. Hopefully over the course of the next 12 months through the DotWs I'll regain my consistency and show steady improvement.

More WHO and SHO practice needed to raise my 300 score. I've devoted a minimum of 100 rounds a week to SHO & WHO shooting, and starting to see results. Currently running in the 90s two-handed, 50s SHO and 30s WHO.

Two missed head shots blew my FAST average. More 3x5 Push and 99 drills in 2012 should help this. One run was a personal best of 5.04 / 1.51 .54 2.16 .28 .28 .27. Breaking 5.0 seconds is one of my main goals for 2012. Work on my reload seems like the most efficient use of my time toward this goal.

[sigh]

Day 1:
FAST: 7.70 (4.70 -H -B) / 5.85 (4.85 -B) / 6.72 (-4.72 -H)
300: 87/62/48 = 197

---couldn't control the trigger. I shot the FAST first, yanked the trigger all over the place. I should have been smart enough to just stop, work some calm slowfire drills, and come back later, but I didn't---hence the 300 scores. 2H pulled several right, SH pulled low often, WH was just embarrassing.

Day 2:
FAST: 7.79 (4.79 -H -B) / 4.61 (clean) / 4.78 (clean)
(managed to get video of the FAST runs today)
300: 92/70/52 = 214
(Still was yanking the trigger badly on the SH and WH parts.)

http://youtu.be/TgUH-j47Q9s

Again, shot the FAST first. Have no idea what I was thinking for that first run, but managed to remember to just slow down and get hits for the other two.

300 Ave: 206 (That shouldn't be hard to improve. How the heck did I get a 252 when we did this as the DOtW?! I've got the target pictures, so I didn't just make that one up!)
FAST Ave: 6.24 (That shouldn't be hard to improve either, because when I remember to work the trigger I don't yank it and I get my hits.)

Excuses, excuses. :)

300 #1 – Two hands: 88, SHO: 53, WHO: 63, total: 204
300 #2 – Two hands: 83, SHO: 62, WHO: 80, total: 226

I was ready to take my medicine with the 300 this time. Didn’t turn out as badly as I thought it would, but tons of room to improve over this year.

FAST #2 – 4.69: 1.35, .60 / 1.97 / .27, .22, .28
FAST #3 – 4.99: 1.53, .65 / 2.03 / .27, .26, .25

Three sub-5 clean FASTs are very uncommon for me. Typically I would drop a couple of shots somewhere in there. Seems like shooting it with the mindset I have in GSSF is a good idea – that is, with a clear intention of being sure of the hits and forgetting all about the time.

1/30/2012 data:

FAST #1 – 7.41 (-1 H): 1.53, .79 / 2.34 / .27, .25, .23

Jerked the trigger on the second 3x5 shot, saw the front sight dip.

300 #1 – Two hands: 67, SHO: 59, WHO: 70, total: 196
300 #2 – Two hands: 84, SHO: 53, WHO: 85, total: 222

FAST #2 – 4.80: 1.46, .58 / 1.99 / .27, .25, .25
FAST #3 – 5.01: 1.75, .65 / 1.91 / .24, .25, .21

Pulled a bad (low) grip on FAST #3 and felt like I had to slow a lot to get the 3x5 hits.

This makes my final January 2012 Performance Challenge data:

I left room to improve!

Shot my 2nd set of FAST Drills for the revolver tonight:
8.45
8.45
8.33

Average for the 2 Sessions: 8.62

As I spend more time with my M&P 45 I'm seeing my revolver speed performance suffer.

I wanted to get this in under the wire before my hiatus, so unfortunately only got to do one run (three FAST and one 300). Then my shot timer crapped out after the second FAST run, so I only got to do two.

300: 274
F.A.S.T. average: 5.27

The January scores were with a G17; December was the SACS/Warren 1911. Reloads really killed my FAST runs this time, averaging around 2.4s, almost half a second more than the G17 reloads. So I've proven that a year of dedicated high-volume practice has made me worse than I was before I began.

No way, all you proved is that Glocks are equal in accuracy and better for reloads than 1911s! ;)

I had forgotten all about this. :)

Here's my first set of December runs.

9mm Colt 1911, Comp-Tac holster, 5.11 vest. I have been shooting this gun for the last couple of weeks. I shot the Jan scores with a gen 3 G-17.

Fast:
2.27, .66, 2.37, .29, .23, .22 clean 6.04
2.19. .78, 2.33, .28, .24, .21 clean 6.03
2.16, .62, 2.46, .25, .21, .20 clean 5.90

300 scores:
2H 90 2x, SHO 88 1x, WHO 85 Total 263
2H 95 2x, SHO 96 2x, WHO 94 1x Total 285

I shot the first run on the 300 using a 6 o'clock hold. I had some low hits so used a center hold for the second run. Much better. :)

My Fast scores are much better because I learned the patience to get the hits on that *&^%$#$@$ 3x5 card. :) Thanks, Todd. ;)

I have spent the last year switching between 4 Glock 17s, a G-19 and a G-26. I should probably pick one gun and stick with it. :)

Will there be a 2013 incarnation of this? (Perhaps run by DocGKR in lieu of ToddG's possible prolonged absecnes?)

I missed out on this for 2012 but think it'd be a great way of testing my progress by this time next year. Love the idea of it actually.

Shoot, whether there's a 2013 thread or not, I'm doing it strictly for my own benefit; make it a quarterly thing, maybe. Wish I'd caught this when it started up...

Not surprisingly, switching platforms multiple times over the year and getting less live fire practice than I would like led to insignificant performance differences.

Fast Average: Jan 2012: 7.51, Dec 2012: 6.98
Bullseye 300 average: Jan 2012: 248, Dec 2012: 253

Always nice to see improvement.

On a side note, one of my shooting goals for 2012 was to get a FAST run under 6 seconds clean. I did that in October, and then did it three more times since then with a personal best of 5.60. For 2013 I want to make it more consistent and have a cold run under 6. (so far my sub 6 clean runs have all been my second or third run)

December Results
300: 243
FAST: 5.68

I shot roughly 20K rounds in 2012, devoting a lot of time to SHO & WHO early in the year. FAST didn't show huge improvement, but my consistency is much better. I had a personal best of 4.92 in July.

2012 was my first year shooting competitively, and I had other notable improvements:

Steel Challenge: Posted a 24 second improvement for the year shooting 4 matches. Now a "Steel B" shooter under the new classification system.

IDPA Classifier: Had a 17 second improvement in scores between March and November, finishing the season an SSP EX with a best of 117.x. Nerves get the best of me in the Classifier, and I finish much better in regular matches.

USPSA: Not yet classified, but have been finishing among the B shooters in Production and shooting Limited Minor.
