Week 216: Hard Mode Sweet Sixteen

Results may be posted until June 12th, 2017.

Designed by: Todd Louis Green, Hard Mode adaptation by BATTLETOAD
Range: varies
Target: 3x5 card
Start position: Holstered, with hands at sides
Rounds fired: 16

This is a more difficult variation of the excellent Sweet Sixteen walkback drill.

You get exactly sixteen rounds. You can begin with the target at any distance you choose.

At the start signal, draw and fire one round at the target. If you hit and are under the par time, add one yard and repeat. If you miss, stay at the same distance and repeat. Your score is the farthest target that you successfully hit.

If you miss three times at the same distance, the drill ends even if you still have ammunition remaining. E.g., if you miss your first shot at the 7yd line, then miss your second attempt at the 7yd line, and miss your third attempt at the 7yd line the drill is over even if you have only fired three rounds and scored no hits. This prevents someone from beginning at the 50yd line and hoping for one hit out of 16 shots.

If you don't miss, you'll end up 15yd farther than your first shot. E.g., if you start at the 5yd line and get all your hits, your last shot will be at the 20yd line.

PAR times for concealed or retention holsters:

At a distance of 7 yards or less, PAR time is 2.0 seconds.

At a distance of 8-15 yards, PAR time is 2.5 seconds.

At a distance of 16-25 yards, PAR time is 3.0 seconds.

At a distance greater than 25 yards, PAR time is 4.0 seconds.

If drawing from an unconcealed, non-retention holster, SUBTRACT 0.5 seconds from each of the listed PAR times.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Distance of farthest successful hit

Times are hit or miss because I shot at a pretty busy range and the shooter to my right thought the perfect gun for his wife was a snub .357. A few times I had to do a bit of math as I missed the first beep on my shot timer.

Gun + Holster: Gen 4 G17 w/ Dawson .125" tritium front/10-8 .156" rear, TTI Glock Ultimate Connector. Concealed in a Dark Star Gear Orion AIWB under a t-shirt.

Observations: I choked on the 16 yard shots. The mental transition giving me an additional .5 seconds didn't quite click with me, and I kept trying to hit the 2.5s par for that range. I slowed down and got my hit, though it cost me two shots. As with other drills requiring accuracy under pressure, I need to remind myself to take as much of the available time as I need to make the hit. As the distance increased, I transitioned to getting as fast of a draw as I could get in order to give myself plenty of time to get a good sight picture and trigger press (the idea is that, on a 3s par, if I draw the gun in 1.3 seconds, I've got another 1.7 to do my thing). I think that was actually to my detriment, as seen on the 16 yard shots. I was significantly more confident in my hits when I worked the trigger gradually as I pressed the gun out. Slack out, pull from the wall sometimes leads to flinching for me. So, I'll need to continue working on a revolver-like pull. The new TTI connector helps with that.

Starting distance 7 Yards
Distance of farthest successful hit: 13 yards

This ate my lunch. I was cruising along until I got 12 yards. I was completely "stuck" there forever and couldn't do anything right after miss three or so. No problem with the draw or grip, but just couldn't hit the target to save my life. Great drill and thanks for posting it.

I tried this a few times starting at the 10 the other day, this is my personal best. 10 yard start, 9 hits, 18 points.

I've ran is a couple times from the 7 as well, I think if I try this a few more times I can clean this score up a bit.

I'm considering an attempt at this starting from the 3 yard line but requiring a clean run.

Shot this on 5/13 with G19 (#2)

Started at 7 yards. Missed my first shots at 10 and 13 yards. Wheels totally fell off at 14 yards and missed 3x in a row.

16771

I noticed my index wasn't very consistent at 14 yards which meant I was searching for the target a bit and then rushing the shot. Also need to grip harder if I'm gonna be more aggressive on the trigger press (see the horribly dropped shot at 14 yards rushing to make par).

Shot this on 5/20 after warming up with the regular sweet sixteen.

Used a G19 (#2) with JMCK AIWB and a polo that was a bit longer than I'd like. Started at 7 yards again, same as last time. Took 2 shots to clear yards 10 an 12, and 3 to clear 16. Missed last 2 at 17 yards.

16775

Overall, having done some draws in dry fire this past week seemed to pay off since I was doing less cleaning up of sights after the draw. Ended up 3 yards further than last week. Also need to grip harder, some dropped low shots.
