It's that time of the year again. The Desert Dog Police K9 Trials return to Mesa at the Cubs Sloan Stadium on May 6-7th from 9AM to 3PM. If you're in the Mesa/Tempe/Scottsdale area, heck in the Valley, come on over. I'm not competing this year but I'll be helping on the Main Field events. Here's the promo video.

My dog (and I) are the second team seen doing a door pop.

Be there or be square!

My wife's family all live down that way... I'll pass this on to 'em. I bet my niece would love this; she's into dogs in a big way.

I'm intrigued by dog breeds. Over the years I've been to a lot of conformation dog shows, agility, and obedience competitions, but I've never been to a police dog trial, though I have seen some YouTube videos.

Are these events dominated basically by German Shepherds, the various Belgian Shepherds, and the odd Doberman Pinscher entered? I realize there is a reason these breeds have become popular, because they do the job well. However, is there anybody taking the less beaten path with other breeds historically used for police/defense work such as Airedales, Briards, Bouvier des Flanders, Rottweilers, Boxers, etc.? If so, are they competitive?

In ranking them in Arizona it's probably Belgian Mal and Dutch Shepherds followed by GSDs. Lots of Labs as detection dogs. I've been in K9 13 years and I've never seen a Dobie or a Rottie working on a K-9 unit here. I know Tucson had Dobies in the past. I've heard of Rotties working back east in colder climates. I know the Dutch train Bouviers in KNPV but I've never seen one here.

LL if I see any trials for your area I'll pass it on.
