Week 214: Sweet Sixteen

Results may be posted until May 28th, 2017.

Designed by: Todd Louis Green
Range: varies
Target: 3x5 card
Start position: ready; standing unsupported
Rounds fired: 16

This is a variation of a classic walkback drill.

You get exactly sixteen rounds. You can begin with the target at any distance you choose.

Fire one round at the target. If you hit, add one yard and repeat. If you miss, stay at the same distance and repeat
Your score is the farthest target that you successfully hit.

If you miss three times at the same distance, the drill ends even if you still have ammunition remaining. E.g., if you miss your first shot at the 7yd line, then miss your second attempt at the 7yd line, and miss your third attempt at the 7yd line the drill is over even if you have only fired three rounds and scored no hits. This prevents someone from beginning at the 50yd line and hoping for one hit out of 16 shots.

If you don't miss, you'll end up 15yd farther than your first shot. E.g., if you start at the 5yd line and get all your hits, your last shot will be at the 20yd line.

For added adventure, you can repeat the drill SHO and WHO.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Starting distance
Distance of farthest successful hit

Starting distance: 10 yards
Distance of farthest successful hit: 23 yards

I ran out of distance with two rounds left. I think the bay I was in is supposed to be 25 yards, but I measured it and only came up with 23. I didn't shoot the last two rounds. Misses at 14, 16, 20, and 23. Great drill and thanks for posting it.

after spamming 9 FASTs with WML activation I went right in to Sweet 16, I LOVE THIS DRILL

First attempt - I started at the 7 yard line (because of the familiarity with the 3x5 at 7 yards) my hits were all there, then I get to the 15 yard line and mentally imploded and miss 3 in a row, fuck me.

Second attempt - I started at the 10, I ran out of ammo on the 23 (My last shot was at the 22 and it was a hit). I'm not super proud of this run - but it went well I think, dropped 3 shots and none we repeat drops - I forget what distances they happened at but it was spread out.

This drill is great, it's low volume and teaches you a ton about acceptable sight picture at a gradient of ranges.

Then the rain/sleet ambushed me outta fuckin nowhere and it was time to pack it up unfortunately.

If the weather is agreeable tomorrow I'm going to start at the 15 yard line and feel it out.

Can't wait to see you wizards rock this.

DG12 - wow we read each other's minds or something hahaha.

Pic related (I'm doing negative taping so the second attempt includes the hits from the first attempt)

With the .45 I started at 20 yards and made it to 32 yards. As notated on this target, I dedicated my shooting today to my friend, the Fallen Soldier killed in Iraq yesterday. I invoked him to steady my hands with each press. So today's shooting was sacramental. He was a very serious shooter and crushed me every time we shot together.

With the G43 I started at 10 yards and made it to 22 yards.

scored a 24 today, started at the 15 yard line, last round was at the 25 yard line but it was a miss. Very ugly shooting, I think I can do better. Wind was beating the fuck out of me, going to try at the 15 at least once more and then try the 20, when the wind fucks off that is.

Did a "split" day of shooting - really helps boost overall performance, went back and scouted a deep deep wash with *less* wind.

Started at the 15, made 11 hits so score of 26 - those 2 ultra fliers were my last two shots, I got psychologically compromised when I realized where I was.

Probably going to farm this one, apologies in advance for the slamfire posts.

Two guns today. Sig P320 full with Dawson Precision sights and a Sig P320 RX compact with dot.

P320F (best of two runs):
Starting distance: 10
Distance of farthest successful hit: 23
P320RX:
Starting distance: 10
Distance of farthest successful hit: 25

Worth noting that I have 3 range sessions on the RX and first one with the flat Greyguns trigger. i spent a lot more time on my P320F that I use for both IDPA and USPSA. Shooting RX for accuracy at distance is much, much easier for me now. The front fiber on the P320F was a fat, ugly blur today. If I were an optimist, my takeaway might be: "If I spend time with the RX I could start off further and eventually crush this drill!". But I'm not, so it's more like: "My eyesight sucks more with each passing day".

Cool drill! It's nice not shooting under time pressure once in a while. :)

147 grn bayou reloads.

I started at 10 ish yards and ended at 25. I had three misses but never more than 1 in a row. I know the numbers don't match. I went to a terribly lit indoor range that doesn't have the yardage marked. I know the bays are 25 yards and I began at what I guessed was 10 yds. I just moved the target back after each hit. Ended up taking 3 shots a 25.

This was the sole highlight of my live fire. I did it a second time and failed at 25.

3x5 card positioned horizontally

I started at 5 yards and made it back to 18. I missed once at 16 and twice at 17. I think the last time I ran this drill was the last time it was the drill of the week. I'll end up running it next range session as well.

Glock 17 gen 3 chopped/stippled with ny1/(-) connector combo, heinie's, gadget
horizontal 3x5
starting distance - 10 yards
final distance with a hit - 22 yards

I started at 10 yards. I had a mike at 16 and 2 mikes at 19. I am very happy with this score, as I had a very bad start to my range session. I used this drill to correct a few things that I found myself doing early on in the session when under watchful eyes and/or time pressure and it definitely showed improvement. I taped about halfway through as to better keep track of hits etc...but I took the picture after the tape was removed so it pulled out some of the hits and is why some of them have no grease ring. All 3 mikes were high, you can see one clipped the very top of the uspsa target and the other two went right over top. I'll definitely be doing this again, especially if i find one of my bad habits creeping into a session, as this kind of lets you reset and just focus on doing everything right without time pressure etc...very good drill.

I'm a little disappointed I was only able to make it to 17 yards. I had all three of my misses at the 18 yard line (all low). I was doing pretty good up until then.

Observation: The 1911 I shot here shoots the dot at longish ranges with the factory Novak tritium set.

Very quickly past 25 yards I had to basically keep a sliver of card over the front post, firm up left/right and then move just a skosh higher. Had I shot at a horizontal 3.5 I'd been guessing many inches above the card at those distances; with predictable results I'll bet.

This seemed like fun, but unfortunately I didn't have a 3x5 with me today, so I figured I could just use the upper A as a rough reference and keep them in a 3x5 area. Shot the Walther Q5, DP Pro and my Berry's 124 reloads. Started at 15 and ended up at 30. Interestingly all but 3 shots were in the upper A, but all were in an imaginary 3x5, lame as that was with no card.

I was at full strength this morning - I had not planned on running this, but I had just shot (4) 25 yard 10 shot timed groups at a repair center B8 and was feeling at my performance apex, so I decided to shoot this starting at the 20.

For me - it went very, very well, I might even go so far as to consider this type of performance a fluke, regardless hits are hits so there it is!

Started at the 20, 11 hits, score of 30 points. Sorry no backer - the cardboard was haggard and wouldn't be very telling.

First time live firing in a month. Ran this 4 times in my allotted hour at the range.

1 - 3 - 17 yds - misses @ ?, ? 17 (16 rds)
2 - 5 - 17 yds - misses @ 14, 15, 17 (16 rds)
3 - 6 - 18 yds - misses @ 16, 18, 19 (16 rds)
4 - 7 - 16 yds - misses @ 13, 17, 17 (13 rds)

17 yds seems to be my wall. And sometimes, when I miss I miss big. Last shot on the first round was the tape in 'card' #2. Had no idea I pulled it.

I started at 7 yards. I don't think I moved exactly a yard each time. The two misses off to the left were around 18 yards. The shot just below the head was the last shot, fired at 25 yards. My last hit on the card would have been about 23 yards. Pistol used was my issued M&P40/TLR with 180 grain Winchester ball.

4/28 Shot this with my G19 (#2)

Started at 7 yards and cleaned them all until 17 yards. Made that on the second shot. Missed 3x at 18 yards, finishing with 15 of 16 rounds fired.

16763

Glad this is coming back, I really needed it. Struggling with the new pistol compared to the CZ75. I don't know why but glock is shooting high. I think some of it is the gun, but most of the misses are due to me. Gonna keep running this drill plus dots to keep improving fundamentals.

4/29

Was unhappy with stopping at 18 yards last time. Reshot with G19 (#2).

Started at 10 yards this time. Missed once at 12 and 17 yards, calling the 2nd miss right. Hit ay 18 yards, but bombed out at 19 yards after 3 misses. Small progress!

16766

I need to really focus on the fundamentals of trigger and sights here, but also a great opportunity to practice calling shots and tracking sight. Need to be more conscious about that in this drill. Small progress today, hope to keep pushing this out past 25 yards over time.

5/13 shot this again with the Glock 19 (#2)

Started at 10 yards. Did fine until I missed 3 times in a row at 22 yards. Progress!

16770

Getting more used to the new POA/POI, plus I think my fundamentals are just improving. Guess the dryfire is helping me acclimate to the glock more.

5/20

Shot this twice with my G19 (#2)

First run was terrible. Started at 10 yards, made my 3rd attempt at 12 yards and missed 3x at 13 yards. With remaining 8 shots, started over and ended up at 15 yards to refocus myself on fundamentals.

16774

Second run was again starting at 10 yards. Clean until I needed 2 shots for 16 and 17 yards, then hit my last shot of 3 at 21 yards.

16773

Definitely seeing improvement overall compared to a few weeks ago! Was also good to see that my groupings seemed to be slightly better even comparing runs 1 and 2.

Beretta m9, d spring
All shots DA

Start 10 yards
Furthest hit 16 yards

I was struggling with DA today. I pretty much had misses at every distance. Compared to the ny1/(-) connector 17 i was pretty bad. I certainly need to work on my Tda ability more. I had to really focus on every aspect of fundamentals, particularly grip and trigger control to get the hit at 16. If i was at all lax in my grip i would pull it hard right, if i tried to plow through the shot same result. I'm still waiting on my vertec grips to get back from my stipple guy so the bigger more round factory grips are a bit large for my taste, and i definitely prefer the flatter thinner grip the vertecs offer. The fixed front sucks too as it's not very defined as compared to Heinies etc... that I'm used too. But in the end it can all be shot better than I'm currently doing with it and it's up to me to put in the work to improve. The rest is just excuses.

Did this one today too, good one for tbe indoor range. I only had white targets and white cards, so I had to improvise by cutting up an ammo box - the large face of a 50-rd box is really close to 3x5, FYI.

Started at 5.
Made it to 16.

Had misses at 12, 14, and then a couple trying to get 17.

I started losing the target visually as I approached 15 yards. It's smaller than my sights and lighting varied with distance as it was either in or out of the bars of lighting as it ran back.

Started at 10, last hit at 20. Glock 17 Gen 4. Missed the very first shot, didn't note my other misses but they were spread out pretty evenly. I really liked this drill, helped me dial in my grip and trigger control while bringing more variety than just shooting dots at 7 yards or something. I'd never shot at an actual white 3x5 card before, gives you a very clear sight picture! (At the indoor range I shoot at most of the time, I can only use their targets, so I use a stencil and a Sharpie to make 3x5s.)

http://icedesigns.com/echo0603/pf/052817/1.jpg

With that first run, noticed I was hitting a bit high overall. (My other misses were low, poor trigger control, but the target wasn't clean so they are not shown.) I'd just changed out my front sight before this session and (apparently) didn't quite have my zero right. Shot a few more groups at 25 to confirm then dropped my rear sight a few clicks and ran the drill again. Started at 10, last hit at 22. One miss at 18, two misses at 23.

http://icedesigns.com/echo0603/pf/052817/2.jpg

Biggest thing I noticed this time around was the risk of waiting too long for the perfect sight picture and not pulling the trigger confidently. That's what happened with my first miss at 18. I was then extra careful with my next shot but it was nearly out, the one on the right. Realized what was going on and for my next shot at 19, made sure to pull straight through when the sight picture was acceptable and it's one of the three shots touching right in the center.
