The Canada National Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship was supposed to be held last weekend but was cancelled after police threatened to arrest people taking part in the event. Tournament spokesman Danny Vu says police told organizers that jiu-jitsu is not an Olympic-recognized martial art and is considered illegal prize fighting. Police say they received a complaint about the tournament.

And I suppose paper punching at your local range is considered "illegal de-forestation" too. What's their take on Judo and Karate? Is Tae Kwon Do the ninja assassin art of Kim Jong-Un?

It's good to know that my 7 and 10 year old girls are into illegal prize fighting, at least in Canada and NY.

What's most ironic is that wrestling and boxing are probably just fine. Just more dumb shit people have to deal with because of fear and misunderstanding being elected.

I am confused. Is the tournament for money? I doubt it. If not, its not.
But yes they are smartest to move it out of there.

Don't ask other Canadians what they think of Quebec...

Why is that in any way a factor? Is there some bizarre Canadian law that bans other than Olympic sports (sounds rather unlikely...)?

The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is: you DO NOT talk about Fight Club!

This makes me want to do Jiu-Jitsu even more. I'm about to check out a Straight Blast Gym in my area soon to continue my basic education from Army combatives and a instructor I had in the academy that was a Gracie guy.

Some places don't treat it like what it really is and lump it in with underground bum fights.

Do it! SBG is a solid organization.

SBG Athens, I believe, has hosted some cool classes of P-F interest and is ran by some cool dudes.

Yes.

My understanding from reading about this on another forum is that the law provides an exception for Olympic combat sports i.e.boxing, judo, wrestling, & TKD (although many don't consider Olympic TKD a "combat" sport)

Isn't Tristar in Montreal?

I think the distinction is competition vs a place with classes. A formal competition, paid entry, etc would fall under certain laws as well as potentially having amateur and pro rules and regs. A BJJ academy might be treated like any zumba joint.

Ew...especially considering that Tristar is actively building some of the best mixed-martial-arts athletes on the planet and has stellar BJJ training.

Yes, BJJ is basically nonconsensual yoga.

The police aren’t releasing the identity of the complainant, but Montreal-based fighting promoter Jamie McGowan said he believes whoever did it “definitely was malicious and had a vendetta.” McGowan, who said he’s held tournaments for kick-boxing, MMA, jiu-jitsu and muay thai for the last 10 years, claims people have been using complaints to police as a way to seek revenge on rivals.
