Equally as historically accurate.

Now I'm confused...

I am disgusted with an 1800s-era history drama showing multiple Belgian Malinois in the use of the British Navy against pirates. The breed was not used in that capacity then, they might have used Bloodhounds, but this is Hollywood not even trying and taking the lazy, stupid route.

Copy. I got that part, but the Brits did use FALS for a very long time. Just not in the 1800's...:-)

T.V. Sheesh.

We don't watch a lot of it, trust me. The episode also pissed me off in another way, but not posting a plot spoiler.

Funny. I was surprised at the Belgian Malinois thing, but not because I knew it was historically inaccurate. Mainly cuz I didn't think they'd be "island" dogs.

Here's where I was on this thread...

"There are pirates on Nassau today?...Also is Nassau still a British protectorate?"

~Reads Thread~

"Oh...it's a TV show set during the time of growing British Empire...Oh and it's called "Black Sails"...Right."

How we know we've come full circle as a society, the idea that there might be pirates in the present didn't strike me as odd, just that the British would send forces to Nassau to find them...

This was my reaction too. I was confused. Learning has occurred.

I still don't know what's going on. All I know is if I was tracking down pirates, I could do a lot worse than having a few maligators on the team.

The Dutch have been using Malinois for over a hundred years as Police dogs. At that point in history Belgian Shepherds were herding sheep. No way Malinois are chasing pirates as much as I'd really like to do that with my Dutchie.

I'm not even sure of what breed of hound the Brits would have been using in that era for fox hunting but that's probably the breed they used to hunt men.

They should have had dogs like these:

Seriously.

And, like, we learned Pirates used FALs, too. Which I did not know either.

On topic: we stumbled on the first episode of season 1 of Black Sails online. It was boring.

It took me until about episode 3 or 4 for the magic to start to happen. I had strong doubts about the show as well, but for me, after the 4th episode it got REALLY good. The current season is the series last. I love how they combine the fictional characters from Treasure Island with actual real pirates as well. Historical doggie inaccuracies aside, the show has become one of my fav's.

I love the title sequence. It's by Bear McCreary. The instrument you hear is a Hurdy Gurdy
http://www.guywheatley.com/photos/HurdyGurdy.JPG

He has also done titles for "The Walking Dead," "Battle Star Galactica," and more including some movies.

Between the authentic seeming costumes and weapons, really cool ships and sets, random and brutal violence and not infrequent soft-core lipstick lesbian porn, the show has managed to keep my attention so far and earn my forgiveness for pretty much everything else you could complain about. I'd been meaning to look and see if the latest season had started yet. I'll have to check it out this weekend.

I think there are at episode 3. Last week's episode was brutal. Can't recall much in the way of boobs or dogs either.....adding to the brutalness.

I've heard many differing opinions on this show, but I must admit the trailers/commercial do look intriguing. I just wanted to find out if you would still recommend it to anyone even with all the apparent issues? I can understand that there will be some historical inaccuracies, because that just seems to be a Hollywood trend, but if the show is really worth watching I might check it out. If not, then I'll continue to await the return of Game of Thrones or something equally as riveting.

And it has pirates that carry AIWB and AOWB. That's got to be worth something.

If you can make it past episode 3 in season 1, it gets good. Recommended!

FWIW, the series is filmed near Cape Town South Africa... at least they didn't use Ridgebacks. I would agree that there were even worse historical inaccuracies. Not a Teachable moment.

They should have used Beagles. The only place they're not going to get lost like dopes is on a ship surrounded by miles of ocean.

Just Nuisance (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_Nuisance) was the only dog ever to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy. He was a Great Dane who between 1939 and 1944 served at HMS Afrikander, a Royal Navy shore establishment in Simon's Town, South Africa. He died in 1944 at the age of seven years and was buried with full military honours.
