View Full Version : Dive into the Sig Sauer P228

I know the pitfalls of platform switching but just can’t help myself. I’ve recently discovered the P228 and have decided to give them a fair shake.
13823
I’ve only put 350 rounds through one so far but I like how it handles. I installed some Trijicon HD sights and confirmed they hit about 2 inches low at 20 yds with top of front sight hold. I tend to like sights that hit a little low during slow fire accuracy strings because my hits usually rise a little when adding speed. I also fit a Bar sto barrel on this one since it was a piece together build. A little sanding to the grips and some added rubber to the front strap feels very solid. The JM Custom Kydex AIWB holster and mag carrier are also solid as expected. I may trim the guard down in the future as it hinders my initial grip at times.
13824

One thing I don’t like is the grooved face triggers found on the pre ’94 228’s. I always swap out the grooved triggers on Glocks for the smooth style and will probably source some smooth faced ones for the Sigs. I’ve shot the short reach and short reset Sig triggers and actually prefer the stock feel.
13826

Now that my training 228 is coming along, I had to add a couple more. I’m always stuck in the early ‘90’s it seems.

Sig makes some excellent guns. I only have 2 myself, but they'll be sticking around for a long time. Do you have any plans to add the SRT kits to your guns? I'm sure you're aware, but the Trijicon HDs are typically a "drive the dot" sight picture.
I'd love to find a mint West German specimen one day.

No SRT for me. I like the stock triggers.

Lots of memories for me with the SIG 228.... my first one was back in '97/'98 and was a two-tone just like the one pictured here. Even this 1911 guy has a soft spot for them.

Classic Sigs are good shootin' pistols. The 228 was one of the best all around handguns ever.

If anyone's interested, there's a NIB West German P228 on Gunbroker now. 20 something bids and 2-3 days left. It'll be interesting to see what it goes for. Talk about a rare find.

Nice find. And good shooting. Really nice group at 10 yards. I had a beat up surplus P228 for a while. Shot fine. I ended selling it though.
Right now I've got an '88 P226 and a mid 2000's P239. The P239 never fails to impress at the range. One of my all time favorites.

I just looked at it. Up to $1100. I bet it goes for over $1500. If not more.
Back in December, there were some interesting CPO (red box) P228s on Gunbroker. They were all West German, matching serials, etc. And I guess they had been refurbished to like-new condition. I almost bought one... then the PX4 Compact Carry was announced.

Had a P228 that I did the 2k challenge with and it worked 100%. Traded it in for a new M11-A1 that didn't work worth a shit.

Junk punch yourself for that
One of these days I'm going to find a German 228 at the time when I have gun money. They always pop up after I bought something else.

Just curious, why choose the P228 over the P229? If nothing else, the P229 seems easier and possibly cheaper to acquire.
I enjoyed my time with classic SIGs. Unfortunately never had the opportunity to shoot the P228.

From what I've read (I'm far from a Sig expert), some people prefer the recoil impulse of the stamped steel slide in 9mm to the newer, one piece P229 slide. Many Sig fans feel the West German Sigs are built to a higher quality than today's Sigs. If you're chasing rollmarks, the West German mark is pretty cool. Slice of history right there. The P228 also doesn't have the rail and is slimmer through the frame for IWB/AIWB carry than the P229R. If you're buying one as a shooter, then get the 229. But if you're buying one to shoot, have a fondness for classic Sigs, I think a West German 228 or 226 would be the ticket.
M2CattleCo
02-11-2017, 10:30 AM
Those are some feelings. The 229 slide is a little over an ounce heavier, but is a better part by a mile.
The NH Sigs from the past couple of years are the best I've seen.

This is kind of like Glock vs HK striker discussion. I was issued and happily carried a P228 for over a decade, if I could have it back, I'd still carry it. My issued P229 sits in its box in my safe. YMMV, of course...

The reason you are hitting low at 20 yards is that the HD sights are zeroed off the dots, not the top edge of the sight. You have to completely cover your POI. This is why I don't use them.
Preferences aside, the 229 is a mechanically superior weapon, and if you intend to shoot the gun much, the 229 will be the better choice.
I loved my 228's and hated my first 229. 60,000 rounds and 1 year later, I changed my mind.

Feels / handles / shoots better for me at speed. P229 feels like a brick in comparison but it is certainly more durable.

I totally get that, but I have to say, I personally find it hard or impossible to tell which is in my hand if you hand one to me with my eyes closed.

I can but my preference for P228s and Gen2 Glock 19's many just be a sign I'm getting old.

Like the 228 vs 229, I just shoot gen 2's better. Enough better it would be worth fitting a barrel to increase the mechanical accuracy of the Gen 2.

Picked up both of these 1994 era P229s (in 357) NIB within the past few months. The top one with the factory grips had only been out of the case when it was photographed for sale, and was still covered in factory oil. I think there are a few new/old stock mid-90s 40s floating around on Gunbroker or Guns America right now...

The only SIG I have ever owned was a 1995 P228 that I bought for $350 a few years ago on consignment from a LGS. It was a very enjoyable gun to shoot but it was different enough from my mandated Glock to cause occasional issues when shooting. The reset and slide release were just too different between the two in my hands.
My son would always ask to shoot the SIG first on our range trips and he did well with it . When he got a job in another city, I presented it to him along with 100 rounds of Federal XM9001 defense ammo. This thread is causing me to miss it. If I ever retire and am not required to carry Austrian plastic for a living, I wouldn't mind another P228 to spend more quality time with.

The cop shops here are usually full of .40 P229 trade ins at good prices. I reload and shoot a fair amount of .40 and those trade in SIGS are very tempting. Not this year. My daughter is getting married in October...

I am in the market for a used P229 .40, would prefer a railed model with E2 grips. If anyone sees a real screamer of a deal, I'd appreciate a link. Also hate you for it since I'm trying not to spend money (ALMOST done with credit cards and student loans, SO close).
Recoil Gunworks has a police department marked very good condition P229R .357 Sig with police department markings and SRT trigger for about $500 that I am desperately trying to resist. I already have a case and a NIB factory magazine that would fit it, and I collect police-marked guns. If someone could buy that and save me the temptation that would be nice. :p

I'm a big fan of the 228. It was my off duty gun when I was just starting, and I worked a lot of details to be able to lay out for it. They have achieved collectors/cult status with Sigophiles, and prices frequently reflect that. If I had to go back to it, I wouldn't feel ill armed.

I'll have my West German P228 in hand Friday...it also happens to be NIB  Have a set of Trijicon HD XRs, Hogue Extreme G10 grips, a SRT kit and an 18# Wolff hammer spring awaiting install. This will be my first West German Sig. I'm not a collector but I thought it would be interesting to own a gun as iconic as a classic Sig with some good history behind it. It won't be a safe queen

I had a Sig 228 in 9mm and it was a fine shooter, but I did not find a real use for it as it was way too heavy to carry and too short for competition.
My favorite old school Sig is the 225 which I enjoy as an accurate soft shooter and is also slim enough to be carried occasionally. Since my compact PX4 is now not compliant for CCP I am going to give it a shot and see how it does in competition.

All classic German Sigs give me the warm fuzzies! But I'll always have a special affinity for the 228. I was issued one for the academy that had 30K down the pipe. I carried it for the next 8 years on the job before eventually moving to a 226. The thing was a rattle trap but could still shoot sub 3" at 25 when it was "retired" nearing 80K. It took me quite a bit of work before I could shoot the full sized pistol as as well as that compact. I miss that ol' girl. 💕 :D

You're not helping either. I've been bouncing around with the idea of trying to trade one of my 226s for a 228, and PF is amongst the worst when it comes to information/experience. As in 'give a crack addict a rock' bad.

This makes me cry....ok, not really, but it's pretty sad the best feeling trigger I've felt on a 228 belongs to this training pistol.
The barrel has been drilled and plugged. Also, the breach face is now solid.
Hate to see any old workhorse modified like this but it does make for a more realistic feel over the plastic red/blue gun. This one is now my dedicated dry fire gun. Plan on using it for some CQC type training next week.

Picked up my P228 today. Thing is pristine! The owner had all the original receipts, the original test target and the manual. The second magazine was still wrapped in plastic
I got it home, stripped it down and wiped off all the preservative oil, installed the SRT kit and Trijicon HDs. Also swapped in a new recoil spring and an updated trigger return spring and Hogue Extreme G10 grips. Hoping to make it to the range for a few hours tomorrow. I have a Grey Guns PSAIT trigger on order and I'll be ordering a Wolff 18# spring. This thing has to have at least a 12-13# pull as-is.
On top of it being absolutely 100% mint, it's a 1991 model, which happens to be my birth year. I have a JM AIWB on order. I occasionally carry my P229 Legion, but I'm interested to see if the 228 is any less bulky AIWB.
Here's some pics pre-mods. I'll get some pics of the sights and grips tomorrow at the range. Posting from an iPhone so pics will probably end up sideways...they never orient for me correctly even if they're correct in my photo library. Anyways...

To the top!
I just picked up a P228 (KD-1993) at a pawn shop. Not a great deal at $450. She ugly, but she mine! Shot it the other day, and was happy with the pistol's performance and mine. It is the first SIG I've fired in over half a decade, and the first SIG I have purchased in over a decade. That's saying something as I had 31 SIGs during my "Peak SIG" days. I'm gonna gut it to the bare frame and slide, clean it, put all new springs in it.
I always wanted a P228TT, but never got one. I know they were nickel guns, but I am kicking around having either Robar NP3 or Cogan hard chrome the slide, trigger, hammer, de-cocker, screws, slide release, and takedown. I may call Klein, who did the old nickel guns for SIG and see if they still do it.
Whomever I go with, it will be after I have the gun de-horned.
Does anyone make a trigger job kit in the same manner as Langdon's TJIAB, but for SIGs? I know Bruce Gray has some stuff in the works as I have been messaging him this evening. However, I'd like to keep my options open.

The P228 is a superb gun, and the pre-2006 ones are especially to be sought.
Conversely, another consideration (minus the hipster/vintage cachet) would be a vintage (albeit less vintage) Sigpro 2340 or 2009, or a contemporary 2022; consensus seems to be that they're some of the few post-Cohen era SIGs that haven't suffered quality control or parts quality decreases/decontenting (probably because of their significant LEO contractual commitments for the 2022, and that it's probably just easier to maintain the same quality on the concurrently manufactured destined for the commercial market-(at least that's my supposition).

Given it has an unknown round count in addition to new springs you may want a new roll pin for the breach block.

Yes, Gray Guns is now offering this: https://grayguns.com/product/edc-sig-sauer-straight-optimized-trigger/ . I don’t have any experience with it though. They have previously offered this https://grayguns.com/product/grayguns-short-reset-trigger-srt-kit/ which does a phenomenal job of reducing reset, getting rid of creep and reducing the trigger weights.
A DIY option which is slightly cheaper and some say has a better feeling result is getting the SIG SRT kit, Wolff 17-19 lb mainspring (I like 18-19 for reliable primer strikes) and either the short or original trigger of your choice. Then either polish the trigger bar and all metal on metal contact points or shoot a thousand rounds or so until buttery smooth. A well worn SIG trigger is a thing of beauty. I’ve done this twice and don’t see the need for anything else.

I saw those but I dont want the flat trigger. I think I want the intermediate trigger offering that is somewhere between the factory full and short triggers. I chatted with Bruce last night, and they will release a full-on kit with new everything. If it provides a better trigger pull that a SIG Custom Shop AEP ($180+shipping both ways), I think I'd rather do that. I am also thinking of getting the intermediate trigger and SRT parts, and having the guts and slide NP3'ed by Robar.

Outer pin: PIN-4
Both of these are available at Midwest Gun Works, and I think maybe Top Gun Supply?
Other than that, the rest of the springs you should be able to crib from a P229. I picked up a 228 last year to replace the one I stupidly sold in the mid-2ks, and the first thing I did was give it a complete tear down, replace all the springs including the decocker spring (except the sear and hammer springs, those were nicely broken in), and after detail cleaning the breech block and extractor, replaced the slide pins. I've also stocked up on spare pins, just in case Sig pulls another "We won't support those anymore".

A friend of mine bought the full competition trigger kit from GGI. I thought it was better than my AEP from Sig; The AEP from Sig DA pull reminded me more of a DA revolver (smooth all the way through and then BREAK!) and the GGI reminded me more of a well used DA pull on a Sig. I guess it was more what I was used to.
If GGI is going to sell the full trigger kits again (hammer, sear, safety lever) I plan on buying one and installing it with their P-SAIT trigger. For me, that's an awesome combination.

I had a a 226, 220 and a 225 back in the 90s. I liked them all. I sold them off in a quest for speed with my issued 1911. I found that sub one second draw was easier if I stayed committed to one platform; so I sold off everything that wasn’t a 1911 except for a Glock 19 which stayed in the safe. A lunch conversation with John Holschen during an Insights class about Sigs German customer service and durability made it less painful.

Best, Jon
I see this posted quite a bit and don’t doubt it. Not considering things like after market parts what are people’s opinions on the 2022? Meaning what are you giving up by picking a 2022 over a 229 or 226? Sensei I’m especially interested in your opinion of the 2022 series for someone looking for the classic Sig series controls on a carry gun.
Not sure if you’ve seen this but pretty good overview.

The SP2022 is 75% of a P226 at 50% of the price. In other words, it’s a great value. It certainly doesn’t give up much to its all-metal cousins in terms of reliability. Durability is also pretty robust for a polymer framed gun (Sig used just enough metal in all the right places). In fact, you will probably appreciate the weight savings as an EDC gun.
Guys like me running an SRT in their P-series DA/SA guns will notice the differences in the triggers, but the SP2022’s is reasonable. I marginally prefer the Legacy P226 grip, and much prefer my Legion’s grip/control.

As I understand , the French Police contract basically paid for the tooling of the SP2022. If one is forced to choose a brand new Sig from a gun store at random with the hope it works out of the box, that’s the one to pick.

Any recommendations for combatting rust with the P228’s blued finished? Or would I get less of a headache having it re-finished?
After wearing it the other day I didn’t notice some moisture had accumulated on the left side and rusted it slightly. Luckily I was able to wipe it off with an oiled cleaning cloth and everything was fine.

I had good luck with a Sentry Solution Marine Tuff-Cloth.
