How often do you get to do this? A friend who worked at the Miami Zoo invited us to spend a day playing with a couple of young tigers (while mama watched with a critical eye from an adjacent cage).

FYI. The Scoutmaster is still leading the Troop. On Nov. 25 1944 he was on the USS Essex in the Philippine Sea when the carrier was hit by a Kamikaze. He will be 91 in less than 1 month and still going strong.

Cool photos from the Winds. With some classic company. But the above really caught my attention too!

I spent a lot of time there when I was younger. I was just back visiting some family back east this past spring and took a stroll down memory lane.

Little place that hobbits built. Water from that little creek is taken into that little building, gets some little hobbity magic and comes out as something that becomes a 56% proof Edradour whiskey of a smallest traditional distillery in Scotland. Too strong for hobbits though.

Always wondered..... how thick does the bottom of the lake need to be to prevent it from falling into the salt mine? <shiver>

The floor of the lake is way above the roof of the mine, like not even close. We were at around 1800' and at its deepest point Lake Huron is about 750' deep. So there is over 1000' between them and salt is very structurally sound when in the earth's strata.

He is a little early, so they were giving him O2 for the first 48 hours. As you can see in pic two, he is breathing on his own now. So hopefully, no more issues.

Not Dom, one of our TFOs... but Dom was the sup for that op. @2,800 lbs of pot. My first big haul.

The pic above it was just over 1,000 lbs in a conex box. Myself and another agent sat in the woods in our little green camo get ups, watching with NVGs as they loaded vehicles. We called it out as they left with part of the load. Dom and co went for the traffic stop. Shots flew, cars ran, and chase was on! We saw the rest of the crooks loading up to run. I called Dom for back up, but they were in the middle of a chase. Soooo, my partner and I charged out of the brush and did a "pedestrian felony car stop". They were to dumb to know they could have just driven off... we got all the dope and all the players. No one was hurt. Good night!

Thanks for letting me know. Phew! I thought for a second that Dom had turned into the Michelin man in the few years I hadn't seen him.

When I left Miami, the federal threshold for pot was 5,000 lbs. anything less went state and local. Of course our guys were willing to assist on the burn runs, nice guys that we were. :p

But if you're taking the salt *out* of the Earth's strata...

They leave big sections of the salt in place, called pillars, to support the roof. Coal mines are much more fragile and the space between pillars is much smaller than in a salt mine. After being in coal mines, a salt mine is like going on vacation. Much bigger roadways and much higher ceilings (many coal mines you can't even stand up in) and virtually no chance of a cave in...oh yeah and no methane in a salt mine so no big risk of explosions.

Here's another pic.

To the right of the peak is a long flat ridge, with steep face, that is the "Chicken Out" section.

Mount Dickey to the north of Borah:

I was at my cabin a few months back, and noted ski tracks down the face. I incorrectly though it was from heli-skiing, which due to being fairly close to Sun Valley, is not unusual in the region. I found out that there is a local guy who regularly spends all day climbing Dickey with all his gear, just to enjoy skiing the face back down to his truck.

Wow. Where is that Ice wall?

It's located in a little side canyon off Hwy 145 in SW Colorado. It's a bit of a gem b/c it doesn't come in all that often. This was a rare year. It's called "The fang", but not to be confused with the climb of the same name just outside of Vail.

The region is a bit of a mecca for climbing ice, with Ouray, Silverton/Eureka, Telluride hosting a slew of truly world class waterfall ice classics.

Some of those coal miners and wood hicks (WV term for loggers) were tough men. Growing up my next door neighbor was a miner. Came home every day covered in coal dust, except around his eyes where he must have worn eyepro.
His wife always packed him a big lunch with a dessert. He always ate dessert first; when I asked him why he said "well down in the mine we always eat dessert first. That way if the mine falls in on me in the middle of lunch, at least I had dessert."
He died of black lung.
