For me: Llama sneezes smell like rotten ass and alfalfa. A truly horrendous smell that's oily and lingers. You will need to launder your clothing if a llama sneezes through the window of your car.

I will not say I learned this, but this year did reaffirm it:

The laughter of a child is a healing force.

The love of a dog soothes much anger.

The gift of real friendship is literally without price.

Cancer fucking sucks.

That's for sure.

I have a new-found appreciation for those irresponsible jackasses back in Detroit who would go out at 2359 on December 31 and let rip with a full magazine of whatever they had. At 2355 or so every on-duty patrol car in the city would go park under the nearest overpass for ten minutes or so.

Me, I'll probably just go stand outside and yell "FUCK YOU, 2016!" at the top of my lungs.

OBTW, didn't we already do a thread about "What I learned this year"? I distinctly remember saying something to the effect of "Not a God-damned thing"...

Hmm,

Personal life - if you wanna make God laugh, tell him your plans. Wife is having twins in March, I was pretty content with our only child. It's all good, I get to have a boy - and another daughter!

Work - almost everything works out and either way, it will be ok, no need to stress over stuff (running my own small business).

Shooting - how to suck a little less? Putting in real, focused practice is where gains are made - far, far better than just doing random/repetitive shooting related stuff. Oh and red dots are super easy for people with sucky astigmatisms/eyesight.

What I learned this year.....

Sensationalism Trumps (pun intended) a lot.
I shouldn't test ride new motorcycles just to "see" without being ready to buy.
It is truly not the arrow, but the Indian.
I make a decent minister (married my friend and his wife this year).
Not sure if it's specific to this year, but had a major awareness this year of.... appreciate the moment and all that the "now" offers. It won't be there for long.

......oh yeah, fuck cancer too!

When you have a shooting issue, be brutally honest with yourself, get maniacally scientific on isolating the issue, create drills that force you to address the issue, then run them until you successfully address the issue. Many short sessions working on it are far better than a single long session. Rotate to different drills if you aren't making progress then come back to it. Sometimes the mind and body needs time to heal/gel/regroup.

FWIW, Larry and I get along great and, in fairness, he drew a conclusion that was based upon the information available to him and seemed reasonable given that. He obviously wasn't privy to the long discussions between Todd and I, and I have friends that came to essentially the same conclusion Larry did based upon the same incomplete info.

Also, Todd and I both agreed that LAV banning AIWB from his classes was a fortuitous coincidence that just happened align with our preexisting plans. So while it didn't alter our timeline, it certainly could have if things would have been slightly different.

Ok, so I learned something else in 2016.

Emotions matter but reason must drive the train (always knew it but I got reminded often this year)

And

LAV banning AIWB from his classes

Learned something else new in 2016...

Larry is an extremely accomplished individual and I would absolutely take one of his classes, however, that being said; I liked him a lot more before he started endorsing anything and everything from anyone who paid him the appropriate amount of Kopeks. He's like the Billy Mays of the shooting industry.

Has LAV endorsed something that was stupid and/or garbage? Serious question. I don't really follow this sort of thing.

Fire Clean. That sort of did it for me when he started endorsing fire clean. I'll take anything he has to say regarding mindset, tactics, weapon manipulation etc... but I'll take what he recommends gear wise with a grain of salt, and I absolutely do not mean to single him out as he isn't the only one... most trainers now days seem to be guilty of this... Costa and Haley to name a few others.

I learned that when your Doctor looks at your MRIs, orders blood work, then calls you back in and keeps saying "I'm really sorry" while explaining shes referring you to an Oncologist, things just turned shitty.

Unfortunately, I think several others know that lesson even better than I do.

Some of the replies in this thread bring home a truism which we've all learned throughout our lives but bears remembering...

Sometimes bad things happen to good people.

Here's hoping that 2017 brings welcome relief to all those that can use a break. You'll all be in my thoughts.

That chronic pain can turn you into someone you don't like.

That trying to push through pain isn't always a good idea, and that sometimes backing off is the right thing to do.

That despite the bad days, I've got a lot to be thankful for, and there's a world full of people and things that can make me smile if I let them.

There are the eight sufferings of Buddhaism which cover most of what is posted.

I would add a few more.

a. Having to read posts about carrying extra ammo.
b. Having to read posts about why an internet expert thinks Glocks suck compared to the Sog and Wesson 358 in 10.5 magnum
c. Reading idiots on other forums discussing the Gadget.

Seriously, life is unpredictable. The world will never be at peace given humanity's ability to fracture and kill over personal greed and hypothetical supernatural entities.
