View Full Version : So what did ya get for Christmas?

I have yet to see the "What did you get for Xmas" thread here today...

I have to admit that I always end up reading them just out of curiosity.

I'll start: I got quite a bit of cold hard cash. With I am turning into a fairly substantial order from the Ben Stoeger Pro Shop. My brother also got me a copy of this. Should be an interesting read.

Sometimes presents come from someone you never expect them from.

Monday I received a text from one of my cousins, essentially asking me to contact his older brother who has a terminal brain tumor. When I called him he told me that what he wanted and wanted me to come by. I left immediately. When I arrived at his home he gave me an old double-barrelled shotgun and a pocket watch.

The old shotgun belonged to my great-grandfather. My cousin had received it in the early 70's from our grandmother with the promise that he would pass it on. He took the shotgun, which had a broken stock, and ordered a blank stock. He them carved it down with a piece of glass.

The pocket watch was taken from a German soldier during WWII by his father who gave it to our grandfather upon his return home. Our grandfather kept it on him until his death. Our grandmother gave it to him with the promise that he would pass it on when it was time. I was very humbled to receive the gifts and they're worth more than any amount of money I could ever receive.

I got myself a bigger chainsaw (https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?19411-LittleLebowski-s-big-gay-chainsaw-thread&p=531551&viewfull=1#post531551) (64CC) to compliment my 42CC Dolmar 421. A very good friend sent me a Beretta 1301 with the TDG shroud (http://taudevgroup.com/1301/) already installed, JV and I have some skeet shooting planned at the excellent nearby trap range. A few days ago, my children's grandfather visited (http://www.facebook.com/RockyChavez4CA/posts/730643433778046) (two sets of grandkids, not hard to figure out which ones are mine :D) and that was best of all.

My wife and I do not give each other gifts for any formal holiday anniversary/etc and I vastly prefer that. We do the customary gifts for the kids on the regular holidays.

Good book, On Combat.

If you have not yet done so, make sure you follow up with On, Killing (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0316040932/). While there are a few things that were posited which were disproved or widely believed to be not accurate, the core concepts are interesting.

I got Christmas Eve and Christmas morning to be during my weekend, and, thankfully, New Year's Eve will also fall on one of my regular nights off from work. I work night shift police patrol, and find Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve to be particularly long, hard nights to be on duty.

I bought a Nikon Df camera recently, which could be construed to be a Christmas gift to myself.

The family presented me with some minor things, a box of candy, and some fancy honey; I use honey to sweeten my tea and coffee.

My first grandbaby is due on New Year's Eve, so my best Christmas gift was to hear that all is still going very well.

It has been a good weekend. I will suit-up for night shift patrol in about three hours, to close the evening with a night shift, until almost dawn. Tomorrow being a holiday for many folks, things could be really stupid. Sigh.

Yup! They were dirt poor. His dad, who brought back the pocket watch, was severely wounded and almost died but his buddy wouldn't leave him. When he got straightened out he was on permanent disability and being that it was the 40's the benefits probably weren't that great. Anyway, my cousin learned how to work wood with his hands. The house he lives in he built himself over the course of a year.

First and foremost, both kids are home on leave; one from Ft Carson, the other from Grand Forks AFB. That's the Christmas win right there. Gen 4 G19's played a major role in the "stuff" category; I gave one to my son, and will be getting a second for me from me this week. Also on the stuff side, I got an Amazon Echo, a new Lazboy executive chair for my office / mess room, and a shot timer (CED7000).

My kid is home from college and we got to hang out, which was priceless. My fiancee had her left hip replaced ten days ago (after having had the right one replaced in August), so her daughter and the daughter's fiance showed up at the house with an incredible Christmas dinner and left a boatload of leftovers behind, both of which were also priceless.

Tangible loot included a new daypack for hunting trips, a thermos, a copy of Relentless Strike, and some particularly useful clothing items.

After years of disappointment and/or incorrect thread sizes, I have learned to buy my own Christmas presents all year long. This year, that included a mess of 30-06 and 338 WM factory ammo, a right proper set of gunsmith's screwdrivers, and a Wheeler torque wrench.

I received a DW Valor stainless commander and a couple of bottles of very good wine along with a few baubles.

The trip was the best as time and distance conspire to keep me from seeing my family but once or twice year.

Here's to a health and prosperous new year to all of us and confusing to our enemies.

I was happiest just to spend time among family, but I did get a few gifts I was pretty tickled about. I got another (more comfortable) treestand which my ass should appreciate on those long rut hunts, along with a surprise matching set of Realtree sweatshirts for my daughter and I that my impending brother-in-law gave us. My wife and I are also expecting a son in a little less than 6 months, so I'm looking forward to passing on the sweatshirts and hunt tradition to both son and daughter in the coming years.

#1 by a long shot: Watching the kids talk to Santa on Christmas Eve (with a big thank you to the mall Santa who pretended to understand the kid with a speech problem), and then watching each kid play with the one special gift "Santa" brought that they really, really, really wanted.

Much less important, but very nice, a new range bag, a new red pouch to clip to the aforementioned bag (to hold my range trauma kit), and a Kindle Fire HD8 (to replace the old original HD8.9 I had).

Aside from good health for my family and friends (2 friends had their fathers die in the past week and another's is really close to death), best present I got was awareness and inspiration....

I play guitar and write music and have been in a rut lately. Getting ready for Christmas Eve, was waiting for the wife to get ready. Was on Youtube and plugged in "great acoustic guitar".

If you are at all into some great guitar playing, check out the following.

Andy McKee - Drifting
Estas Tonne - Song of the Golden Dragon
Ewan Dobson - Time 2
Tobias Rausch - Still Awake
....and a ton of others

Really opened my eyes to some new techniques that are evolving for the acoustic. Really brought home.....I need to practice A LOT more and embrace, incorporate and rauchmanify some of the newness out there. I'll get there...

Thanks Youtube Claus....

We are a single income house; so I dont let my wife buy me things since I will just treat myself. She still gets me a couple things like the annual LL Bean house shoe re-up, robe, etc.
I did treat myself to new computer crap since I am a 37 yo dork still pwning noobs on BF4 once a week. I also got some new Steyr M9 mags, an auto knife, and flashlight...cause I need a flashlight every 6 months apparently.

One of the random things we got as a gift that is pretty cool is this: (its a portable steamer...) It actually works really well.
https://www.amazon.com/Rowenta-Compact-Garment-Operated-1550-Watt/dp/B00J1ZGYR8/ref=sr_1_14?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1482855801&sr=1-14&keywords=rowenta&refinements=p_89%3ARowenta

But like the other dads.. all I need is these 2 knuckleheads and to keep them smiling and safe. Took them on the Polar Express again.

I am 28, almost 29, and did a $2,000 build last year. My first since I was 13. Even a year and a half later, it still absolutely kicks ass, most games at high-ultra settings, even the intense ones at medium-high, all which blow my Xbox One (which I still enjoy for some shooters) out of the water with liquid 60-120 FPS.

My wife designed it to replace the factory logos on my boat, which is built buy a local company called Double Eagle. Their factory logos are just kind of boring.

And then a friend with a machine shop asked if I wanted some billet aluminum badging for the thing because he can cut the design easily. So, the boat should be getting a lot cooler in 2017.

Downside: Now I want it tattooed on my neck, anchors on my throat and wings reaching up under my ears. But I really should not do that.

My contention for the most adult of Christmas presents:

Fitbit Aria
I got the Withings one a few weeks back and they're pretty awesome.

We traditionally do small gift exchanges although what usually ends up happening is I participate in the small gift exchange but shower my wife with big money presents for her birthday.

So far my favourite is this:

First thing I thought was tattoo. Without having met you it screams to be a tattoo that you'd have.

I got to watch my kids take in their first Disney World experience. They are 12, 9, and 6. Given their ages, we went all in on the cheese. It was totally worth it. We did the whole "surprise reveal" thing. They each got to open a present early: a new suitcase. Yay, right? Inside each suitcase was a stuffed Mickey Mouse (Minnie for the little girl) wearing a t-shirt that said "I'm gong to Disney World!" and a magic band. Each suitcase also had a Delta boarding pass inside. The flight was for the following morning.

Here they are looking at the suitcases and thinking, "This is cool, but what the heck is going on?":

Here's when they figure it out:

First day in the parks. I told you we went full on with the cheese - matching shirts and everything. Don't judge. It was for the kids ;)

My little girl got to meet every princess, including her current favorite, Elena. The kids' amazement throughout the trip was fantastic. Minds were blown several times over.

Last day in the parks. We went for six days and hit it hard. We were up at 6am for breakfast and in the parks until 9:30pm or later for six days straight. We were beat, but we got to see everything the kids wanted to see. Next time around we can be a bit more selective. I'm glad we can say we did Disney World over Christmas, but we will never do it again. WAY too many people, but we knew that going in and planned accordingly. Lots of breaks throughout the day.

well-done Disney stuff

Nice work. We did a similar trip a couple years back (summer, not Christmas) - it seems stupid but it is a blast. T-shirts and all. We have a similar pic when our littlest met her fav (Cinderella) and they had a special moment. She still talks about "remember when Cinderella kissed me on the nose!". I'm a grump about travel but the whole place is pretty magical.

Man, you guys did Disney right. You can't take a trip like that acting too cool for it. Gotta go nuts or not at all.

Thanks guys. I went in skeptical, but it really was a blast. Glad we did it.

Had some gadgets waiting on me when we got back, so this was officially the best Christmas ever.

Getting to watch my 21 mo old run around the tree opening stuff for four days (he got excited about the first few toys so we saved the rest and parceled them out) and exclaiming "WOW!" regardless of what he got was fun.

+1 on Disney, love it or hate it, they do everything right. I never thought of being a Disney princess as a hard gig, but they train for months before getting to deal with the public. Makes sense when you think about it- they have to be "on" the whole time, no matter what. Including stuff like terminally ill children wishing to get well. I can't imagine keeping it together through that.
We took my daughter when she was 4 or 5, need to go back now that she's 9.

We're not big on Christmas but FedEx just dropped a care package from my wife's family back in SoCal and this made us laugh so I thought I'd share:

A Christmas present to myself:

12779

A free (to me) 342 scandium/titanium no-lock J-frame. I shot it today for the first time. The recoil is noticeable, but manageable. I'm going to try and score another one someplace.

And because Darryl is such an enabler, I'm going to have to find some nice wood for it.

The Frank Hamer biography, some new Converse All-Stars, a Rubik's Cube, a Brittany Spaniel calendar to hang up in my classroom, and I got myself a TLR1s to put on the rail on my SP2022.

Late to the thread, but finally got around to installing the TLR-4 my wife bought me for Christmas... Need to zero the laser at the range this week.
.... What's the chance the zero will be the same for both P2KSK's? No previous experience with a laser.

It was a Christmas of lights here... in addition to the TLR-4, I got an Olight-S2 (for EDC) and a Streamlight MicroStream.

The Olight is my first non-tail-clicky light. I like it a LOT. Hold the button to change brightness and no futzing around with any surprises at startup. Easy.
The micro went straight to my center console, where I've found the tiny light very handy, as expected.
