Week 196: Jerk The Trigger

Results may be posted until January 23rd, 2017.

Designed by: Gabe White
Range: 5, 10, 15, and 25 yards
Target: NRA B8 - download here: https://pistol-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=281&d=1322428748
Start Position: Gun mounted, finger on trigger
Rounds Fired: 20
Par time: 0.35 seconds

For this drill of the week, we are going to work on abruptly pressing the trigger straight back within a short time frame. Start with the gun mounted, aimed at the target, with finger on the trigger. Upon the start signal, complete the trigger press as quickly as you can. The goal will be to make the best hit you can, while making the gun fire within the 0.35 second par time, which is an approximation of the length of the beep itself.

Shoot five shots this way at each of the four distances: 5, 10, 15, and 25 yards. Add up your points at each distance (including Xs.) Overtime shots receive no points.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Gun used
Points at 5 yards, number of overtime shots
Points at 10 yards, number of overtime shots
Points at 15 yards, number of overtime shots
Points at 25 yards, number of overtime shots
Total number of points out of the possible 200
Observations: anything you noticed

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

I try and convince everybody to do this drill. I think this is the absolute best drill for dry fire. To many people practice slow easy trigger presses and then wonder why they have issues hitting things at a match pace. Pull that trigger fast and hard in dry practice because that's what your gonna do in a match!!

Grip check!

Awesome drill!

The shortest par time my timer allows is .6. Do y'alls timers go lower?

The beep of the timer is .30

Glock 17 MOS w/Vortex Viper

5 yards No overtime shots. 50 points 5X, shots from .22-.30
10 yards No overtime shots 50 points 2X shots from .18-.32
15 yards No overtime shots 44 points shots from .20-.27
25 yards No overtime shots 40 points shots from .23-.30
Most of my non 10 point shots were high. Not sure what that was about.

Ruger SR1911 Commander in .45

5 yards No overtime shots 50 points 3X shots from .25-.30
10 yards No overtime shots 50 points shots from .24-.30
15 yards No overtime shots 43 points shots from .18-.28
25 yards No overtime shots 40 points shots from .16-.30
Had an ND on first shot, well sorta. I was pointed in with finger on trigger waiting for beep and pressed the trigger early. The MOS trigger is stock and a bit heavier than my other Glocks. Going from a couple of hundred rounds from that, right into the 1911 required a little adjusting.

I did it four times unfortunately I didn't read the rules and did not score the target after each string. Now I wish I did:

Glock 19, AA .22 conversion total: 182-1x
This is the only gun I managed to hit all 20 rounds with.

Glock 42: 155-1X missed with two rounds

Glock 19: 127-2X somehow missed with six rounds and wondered if I mis-counted, but I am pretty sure I fired 20 times at it.
Glock 19 redo: 146-1X missed three rounds.

Generally my shots were a little more centered or even a little right using the trigger jerk which is different from my usual low left.

I set the timer with a random start 5-6 seconds after button press. It took me that long to grip and align sights for longer shots.
Times were .23-.35

It is an interesting drill and I need to redo it scoring each distance to see where I am dropping shots although it is undoubtedly at 25 yards.

Bloody hell.

Shot this today at an indoor range. I was unable to record times so this doesn't really count but I thought I would share. Instead I just extended the gun and as soon as my sights came on target I smashed the trigger as fast as I could.

G19
5 yds 49-4x
10 yds 45-1x
15 yds 46-0x
25 yds 16-0x
Total: 156-5x
G34
5 yds 49-4x
10 yds 40-1x
15 yds 45-0x
25 yds 8-0x
Total: 142-5x

Takeaways: I'm really bad at 25 yard shooting. I also shoot better with my 19 than the 34.

G17

5 yards 49 points 4X, shots from .18-30
10 yards 48 points 4X, shots from .19-.31
15 yards 46 points 1X, shots from .20-.30
25 yards 9 fucking points! 0X, first shot was .39. shots from .28-.39

At the 25 I don't think that the one hit was even the .39 shot either. I could feel that I was shooting high right. I'm blaming some of this 25 business on the cold weather(10-11degrees) and further lack of trigger control. I also felt like I had a harder to keep the "drifting" of the front sight on the black, which messed with my head cause you know your pressing the trigger as soon as your hear the timer...

I like this drill a lot.

No overtime shots; I used a B8 center and counted anything outside the 7 as a miss:

Gun used G17 MOS, stock sights
Points at 5 yards, number of overtime shots 50 -2x
Points at 10 yards, number of overtime shots 48-2x
Points at 15 yards, number of overtime shots 42
Points at 25 yards, number of overtime shots 22
Total number of points out of the possible 200 162

Observations: anything you noticed sometimes I shoot left under these conditions -- more often than I drive the shot low -- with a Glock.

Second run for fun:
48-1x
43-1x
40-1x
33
Total 164; more anticipation at 5, less at 25.

Gun used: M&P9 2.0, stock sights
Points at 5 yards, number of overtime shots: 48, 3x
Points at 10 yards, number of overtime shots: 48, 3x
Points at 15 yards, number of overtime shots: 42
Points at 25 yards, number of overtime shots: 17
Total number of points out of the possible 200: 155
Observations: anything you noticed:

Ran this drill after running DeFoor Test 2 and the GM Test, so I was a bit more dialed in. Still jerked the snot out of the trigger a couple times. At least I watched the front sight drop, which is better than not seeing it...

Being smooth and fast on the trigger is still elusive to me. Need to spend more time on this kind of drill.

I ran each of the last three DoW's with a G19, M&P2.0, and some with a G34. I found it much easier to press through the M&P trigger without jerking the sights down and left. The Glocks are all gen4 with dot connectors. The M&P2.0 trigger is lighter and has more roll by comparison. The larger trigger guard makes it a bit easier to keep my finger off of the frame when running the trigger is a hurry.

Pic. The holes to the left and right of the B8 and from a previous drill. The three holes WAY below the B8 are from jerking the trigger at 25 yards. Ouch.

Have been running this with my CZ 75 SP-01 and G17 SIRT in dry fire. Got to test it out on the CZ live fire today.

5 yds: 48-3X
10 yds: 42-1X Terrible....
15 yds: 48-0X
25 yds: 33-0X

Total = 171-4X

13357

Observations:
-Got lazy at 10 yds after a decent 5 yds, and paid for it with low shots.

-Was not fully tracking my sights through the full arc, but consciously tried to pay attention to the moment the sights lifted, and was able to call some dropped shots. I will continue to practice seeking to see when the sights lift, then learn to track the entire front sight path.

-I feel like one thing that holds me back on quick shots on small targets is trigger/grip. I plan to do this drill a lot in live and dry fire to help lock in grip and improve trigger control.

-Was unhappy with my first showing at 25 yds, so ran it back twice. Improved to 35-1X and 41-0X, so stopped there. Will want to run this drill regularly over next few sessions I think.
