Anyone shoot subsonic 300 Blackout, heavy bullets, on AR500 steel targets at pistol distances (10-25 yards)? If so, was there any damage at all to the targets. I am guessing that there will be none, about like shooting a 230 gr 45ACP. I should have a 300 Blackout upper by Christmas and just bought some 220 grain UMC ammo to try on steel. My suppressor should be out of jail by next fall.

I know I could just spring for a 9mm upper to shoot steel up close, but Brownells has this complete upper for $325 no tax and no shipping, guaranteed for life. My wife just bought a new horse so what the heck.

Damage to plates is all about heat - heat caused by velocity. No heat, no damage.

Like stated, its about velocity. You will be fine with whatever subs you use. I shoot 110gr Barnes black tips @ about 2150 out of mine at AR500 with zero issues. Not close though...100yds minimum. Make sure you have the plates mounted at the proper angle to minimize the splash back and you should be gtg. I chewed a rimfire plate to death years ago shooting a 17hmr at it. Thats how I learned this!

No first hand experience; however, one of the ranges here treats .300BLK Subsonic the same as PCC with regards to steel.

All the time with 220 gr subs. I've not noticed any unusual or accelerated wear.

It takes that long to get the stamp or for signoff in your county in GA? I didn't know it took that long. Nearly a year! Wow.

That is just an estimate, I am trying to manage my expectations. It is not about the county in GA, but it is all about the ATF NFA branch. I put in my paperwork a couple of months ago and am hoping to have it in my hands in time for deer season 2017.

Mine took a little over seven months this year.

Now that is good news!

Shot AR500 plates yesterday with 300 AAC Blackout 220 OTM at 10+ yards. There was no damage to the targets. They were as smooth after I shot them as before I shot them. My hobby takes a new path for a while. Now to gather some dies and inexpensive (coated) cast bullets and away I go.

I like Leatherhead 220s myself. I tried Palmetto Projectiles, bad comms and long wait on shipping. I'm not the only one.

Wouldn't it be a lot less fuss to just shoot an AR in 9mm on the steel?

I don't think so given how easy it is to build or buy a .300Blk AR, but of course you have to factor in the hand loading part.

Or have the ammo fairy making deliveries.

Well, I got into 300 BLK by buying a 16" entry level complete upper with FF 10" rail for $325 delivered. Try getting into a 9mm AR for that? While the ammo is not as cheap as 9mm, you can buy ammo subsonic ammo loaded with reformed military brass and coated hard case bullets for around $.50 a round. The reloading cost for such ammo is about $.25-$.30 a round. Plus there is the fun factor and the cool factor and the new frontier factor, etc. Also, when my can gets out of ATF jail, there is that.

Try doing the math on reloading .300Blk, it's compelling. My best friend is now plinking and training with .300Blk Leatherhead reloads, the math is that good.

What does it cost to reload .300?

Using this site (http://www.handloads.com/calc/loadingCosts.asp) to calculate the overall cost for my pet load using 1680 powder, Leatherhead 220s (http://leatherheadbullets.com/30-cal-220-grn-rn-blackout-2000-ct/), zero on cost of brass (I have a bit of existing brass), and standard cost of my primers ($32 per 1k), I get:

Cost / round: $0.183
Cost / 50 $9.13
Cost / 1000 $182.58

I will be definitely knocking that price down a little as I transition to Lil'Gun powder (about 3 grains less per load) and buying primers in bulk.

The cheapest subsonic ammo at Midway is 60 cents per round in bulk (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1777301817/sellier-and-bellot-ammunition-300-aac-blackout-subsonic-200-grain-full-metal-jacket) ($600 per 1k rounds).
