Man, 69, sets himself on fire in Highland Square moments after ranting about President-elect Trump


A 69-year-old Akron man wearing a U.S. Marines uniform doused himself in gasoline and set himself ablaze on a Highland Square street Saturday morning.

Witnesses said the self-immolation occurred moments after the man became increasingly agitated while ranting to strangers about the need to protest President-elect Donald Trump.

It was unclear whether the man, who had not been publicly identified, would survive. Police said he was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital with severe burns. A passer-by who tried to save the man by extinguishing the flames with his coat was not injured.

The incident unfolded about 2 miles west of downtown Akron in a neighborhood that hosted an anti-Trump rally late Tuesday night that drew several hundred people.

Or they justify their suicide by thinking their gesture will change society to right some wrong. These are rationalizations for their death wish.

In some rampage shooters, they want to die but want to punish folks for the actions that drove them to the rampage. This will change society, so in their mind it is an act of altruism. Suicide by cop can be a mix of these motives.

They fantasize the reaction of people after their action and have observed the social outrage/sympathy/etc. from similar incidents - this motivates their actions in a form of vicarious reinforcement.

So one can chortle about this but without knowing the individual - it can quite possibly be a disturbed individual who acted out in this manner.

Spot on assessmemt.

What concerns me most about these incidents is emotionally disturbed individuals reacting to what is essentially mere media input, no matter how slanted. (And the internet fever swamps can get very slanted indeed as we all know.).

The ability to spam dangerous ideas to a large auidence and count on some percentage reacting in a way that drives violent incidents is at the heart of so many of the problems we discuss here. Whether Daesh lone wolves / known wolves; BLM ideological cop killer ambush, or foreign fighter recruitment flow... now to this is added the fatal idea that some can react to an election they did not like through political violence.

Some percentage may do so through self harm. Others will be externally directed. And when those external orientations cannot realistically act against hard targets like the man himself, they may seek out vulnerable points and employ whatever capability they can muster that they believe will reach the threshold of media or other attention.

This could just have easily have been one of the old NTI scenarios had the actor just been influenced by the utoya targeting option, using only what he demonstrated here. Not a movie any of us want to be caught in as it plays out in their heads.

He was old enough to remember the Buddhist monks self immolating in Vietnam protesting the South Vietnamese Government (supported, for a while, by the Kennedy administration). Maybe that's what he had in mind.
