I always find it interesting to see the landscapes from where others live.

We escaped NJ in 2013 and are very happy to be located in the Mt. Washington Valley of NH now.

Here are just a few of the vistas I am lucky to see, everyday!

The Pea Porridge Ponds;
I'm on the hill in center photo....

Crystal Lake;

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1600/682422/23157501/412947937.jpg

Mt. Chocorua, ala a crappy cell pic;

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1600/682422/23157501/412947935.jpg

And Mt Washington, which I get to gaze upon everyday on my way to work;

I've spent a fair amount of time in your neck of the woods, CSW...North Conway, Tuckerman Ravine etc. My climbing / backpacking partners and I would often do Mt. Washington in winter (Lion's Head and other trails). Great X-C skiing as well. I have a sister living in Keene.

These aren't my images but represent some of the local beauty just minutes from our home in Transylvania County, NC:

We are surrounded by state and national forest, (much of which is under siege by forest fire of late), and the water scenes in Daniel Day Lewis' "Last Of The Mohicans" were filmed about 4 miles from our home as the crow flies.

I am quite envious of Malamute!

I am massively outnumbered in my house, with all daughters. It is one of the reasons I picked a male dog...
If it were not for the family, I think I would be living quite similarly to Malamute, up at my cabin.

That said, though we live in a subdivision, we are in a very small town (less than 3 thousand I think), and minutes away from lots of recreational opportunities.

Literally less than 10 minutes from the driveway to kayaking on the Snake River, which happens a bunch in the summer:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b109/IV_Troop/IMG_1419_zpssnropk5w.jpg (http://s18.photobucket.com/user/IV_Troop/media/IMG_1419_zpssnropk5w.jpg.html)

The cabin is only a couple hours away, and offers incredible scenery in the surrounding area:

On the way to the Borah summit:

I apologize for the poor quality of a lot of these. They're often afterthoughts or else I suddenly decided to take a picture of something and had to switch my phone on and stand around for a minute while it booted up and then the light was gone anyway.

I should also point out that I'm really only at this place part of the time. Most of my M-F 9-5 takes place in the Canadian version of Seattle.

But otherwise, yes, I live on a boat-access, off-grid island. That one grey picture overlooking the bay is "our" bay, where everyone on my side of the island moors. You can see my white Double Eagle just above the big aluminum Eaglecraft there. The canoe was built by Erin's dad.

Yes, I spend a lot of time grinning like an idiot.

Ah, the mighty Arbutus tree. A broadleaf evergreen which sheds it's leaves for new ones in the early summer. Then shed's it's bark all summer long and then loses it's berries in the fall. I have a grove (if that is the proper term) of them bordering my back yard and they sure do create a lot of raking and gutter cleaning work by leaving their various detritus for most of the damn year!

Apparently the wood is so dense it won't float when it's fresh, which is interesting in a Clif Clavin kinda way.:D

Oh man but it burns like coal when dry! We have a ton of them at our island place; the previous owners were somewhat cultivating them as far as we can tell and they surround our place and in fact cover most of the hilltop we're on.

Strange, weedy wood when wet; reminds me of reeds at similar diameters. Snaps when bent, almost like rhododendron twigs. But you dry it out and boy, it's like ash or dry maple in the stove.

The only real downside for us is that our island can be quite dry in the summer - last year there was 0mm of rain between February and September - and the weird peeling skin turns into bone-dry tinder, blowing around in drifts on an island with no running water. Yeah, end of the summer gets a little nervous.

We've been in a drought for a couple of months with several active forest fires ongoing here in western NC. With only wells in our area and the 40 mph winds and dry leaves everywhere, it's been a bit nerve-racking to say the least.

Oh man but it burns like coal when dry! We have a ton of them at our island place; the previous owners were somewhat cultivating them as far as we can tell and they surround our place and in fact cover most of the hilltop we're on.

Same here, we have so many Arbutus trees around our neighbourhood and on a golf course near by. If we had a drunk golfer throw a stogie into the bush the fire would roar up our mountain with some real speed. At present their is only one way in our out of the neighbourhood, so I get where you are coming from.

This is essentially a description and photograph of where I live also, only the above features more freedom but fewer extraneous letter "U"s, as in "neighbours".

Aaaand there's the whole where-to-put-terminal-punctuation issue.

Here's a few of where I hunt.

It's easy to think of these as islands. They're really hilltops that stick up out of the water, which can be 3-400 feet deep in places that are not far from shore.

I have the terminal punctuation issue with my own Canadian publisher...which I try to ignore but seriously, a quote is a quote. If the quote includes a full stop, then you include it in the quote.

OTHERWISE IT'S AFTER DAMN IT!

I guess it shouldn't be surprising just how much your islands look like our islands but those pictures could easily be on the way to my place. I presume the San Juans?

Yes, the San Juans. I think it's considered in style to refer to these waters as The Salish Sea, so we're neighbors after a fashion.

If the hole in the wall was down and around the corner from the Copper Queen, you probably ate at Santiago's. It's a great Mexican Cuisine restaurant in Bisbee.

I believe it was in a narrow alley, I don't recall the location of the Copper Queen. I think it was The Best Mex food Ive ever had.

May look it up online, they probably have pics. I was there in the 80s, I probably wouldn't be able to find it without cruising around looking. A buddy from Flag had moved down to work on a ranch that raised longhorns in Gila Bend. After visiting him, I goofed off a week or two around southern AZ and southern NM a bit, then back through Silver City, the White Mts, and back to Flag.

ETA: Santiago's is probably it. I recall the tall sidewalks on one side of the street. Of course that probably describes most places in Bisbee..... :)

Took these with my iPad so quality is ok, I'm definitely jealous of a lot of y'all as you live in some beautiful areas. One day I'd like to have some more acreage. I'm not sure if I want to try and buy some adjacent or a bigger plot on my current area or the North Georgia Mountains.

About 5 miles in, we came upon an old homestead, including an old cellar hole and family plot. The graves dated between 1851 and 1865. Many children's graves also.

The headstones were in disrepair, some had toppled and broken.

My lovely wife took about 1700 pictures on our trip to SA. She was shooting with a Nikon P1000, which is a pretty neat specialized high-mag point and shoot. It makes some definite compromises but for getting close... no better bang for your buck.

Lions of Kruger:

39365

Those aren't growls or roars, these are post-fornication yawns before he flops over for a nap and waits for the female to be ready to come ask for another round. It's good to be king of the jungle, it seems.

Nice place.

RI has tons of small family plots scattered throughout out the state. Most stones can't even be read anymore.

Sadly, many are becoming unreadable from weathering in the place I go. Some have broken and whoever is mowing it has beat the remnants of some of the stones into rubble by trying to mow over them without having to work around them. The infant stone is sinking into the ground as are many others. Asked a friend to help me go out there some time and level up some of the stones that have settled and fallen over or are about to. I dont think anyone has done any work like that in ages there.

The oldest kiddo travels a lot by herself and while she shoots her revolvers (.45 Colts) just fine, I figured she was past due to get tuned up a bit on semi autos. Not to mention the fact I wanted her to be able to pick up any of mine and be comfortable with them.

I picked her up a Gen 1 Shield, no external safety version. We went to a little place just minutes from the house where we could shoot some USPSA paper targets and steel plates. She took to it very easily.

http://i.imgur.com/JICIXcC.jpg (https://imgur.com/JICIXcC)

I explained the DA/SA and handed her my CZ75. The DA is pretty heavy, but once she got past the initial DA pull, she was off to the races, and really liked the SA trigger on it.

http://i.imgur.com/G3yIWCR.jpg (https://imgur.com/G3yIWCR)

I then let her run my G19 for a while till her performance dropped off and it was time to pack it up after a bit of .22 rifle shooting.

BTW, I have zero idea what I hit on my phone to make this pic a gif, but I did and this is what I got..

I just can't help myself! Warning....thread drift....again. That bike's profile reminds me so much of my first HD, a 1972 AMF Super Glide. I was warned that it would be nothing but trouble because "everyone knows AMF Harleys are junk." Well, next to my very last bike, a Yamaha DT400, it was the most trouble FREE motorcycle I'd ever owned (out of eight, the first being a 1970 BSA Royal Star). I rode the HD to Bristol Dragway, Tennessee (twice), and the longest trip was to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras in 1975. Other than stopping far too many times for gas, the Super Glide was perfect. Back in those days, I thought having no feeling in my butt and hands meant I was some kind of tuff guy. What a dope.

Many of the bikes with bad reputations were owned by people that had little mechanical inclination and little desire to pay others to do anything on them for tuneups or service. repairs were often hacks, make it run, good enough. Wiring cut, twisted, taped together, or the awful blue crimp-on butt splices, cut up or off whatever wasnt cool or that wasnt understood.

My first was a 76 Super Glide. I rode it quite a lot, including from the midwest to az, then az to florida, and lots of shorter trips. With the factory carb I got an even 60 mpg, with the S&S Super B it got around 45-50. I built a 47 Knuckle from a basket case chopper into a road bike. I moved to Az on it, rode it back and forth many times cross country, ALL over Az, for a while daily to Sedona and similar places when weather allowed, and had very little trouble. The only actual show stopper was a wire that wore through to the distributor under the frame. Once I figured it out and taped it, I was good to go. That took about 3 years to wear through from the original build. I started with a ground up rebuild on pretty much everything. Id happily take the same bike and ride it about anywhere if given a chance to go through it. It was in a 58-64 Hydra-glide swing arm frame most of the time, but I decided to try an original stock hardtail frame a year or two. First trip I did a 1000 mile day (2nd day of the trip), got in in the wee hours, slept a few hours, got up and rode to Sedona.

I made a run up to the cabin this weekend to visit with a local gentleman and other awesome friends. While staying at the cabin I took in another terrible view and some reading while on the porch.

I sat in my grandpa's old chair and took a break from my typical E. Keith and chose Aagaard instead. While lesser known, he was an exceptional writer and individual as far as I am concerned. 10 times the writer and hunter of most of the people in the industry today.

I did a little pre-season scouting, as I have a late season cow tag for December, so I stopped and built a fire and had a hot drink, as it was more than a bit chilly.

This was an interesting picture (I thought) that I got on the water the other day. This is where the silty ocean water of the Fraser River hits the dark blue ocean.

Incidentally this was the day after a pretty good storm...50 knot winds out here 12 hours prior but by the time I was out there it was down to 15-20 and spectacularly warm and sunny. I didn't get a picture but there was a humpback whale that leaped completely out of the water, twice, about three hundred yards in front of me. First time I've ever seen one.

One of the frustrating aspects of on-water photography...the sea always looks pretty calm. These were actually 3-4 footers and tightly packed, with a period of around 2.5 seconds. But that is very difficult to convey on film, for some reason - possibly the loss of depth perception in a mono image? Not sure. But no matter what water you're on, if you try to capture it to show how brave and heroic you were, it just looks like you were making a big deal out of nothing.

Thank you - it often looks like that but I have never thought to get a picture of it before. But then I was running right overtop of the big divide and thought it would make an interesting shot.

I'm stuck in Glasgow for the weekend before traveling south to Birmingham for the week. I spent the day so far walking around town and absorbing the local color. I visited the Glasgow Cathedral, bought some Scotch (Smokehead and BenRiach Curiositas, neither commonly available in the US per mine or the shopkeeper's experience. The shopkeeper was another dirty 'merican to my surprise), and walked a large 4 mile loop around the main part of town.

These porpoises escorted us for hours.
Unfortunately, I got no good scenery pics of Vancouver Island; we stayed aboard during the 4 hour regulatory stay-over in Victoria, since at the time we were planning on spending a long weekend in Victoria in September. (Canceled for medical reasons, alas.)

I got up the other morning and there was a really cool looking sunrise, with kind of a strange mist on the harbour and also apparently lens flare. Looking south that's Salt Spring Island which is a fairly large and populated island, kind of like Orcas in the San Juans just over the border.

I occasionally fantasize about sneaking over to those trees at night and drilling holes in them and pouring in some kind of herbicide but I wouldn't do that.

Maybe I will start putting up posters in the block or two around them warning of some kind of newly discovered tree fungus that results in large conifers falling on houses in the first winter storm.

This is kind of different, I hope this isn't too contrary to the spirit of the thread. I was just having this conversation with someone about the town I've moved to and how it's on the edge of this spectacular wilderness. We're right on the east coast of Vancouver Island so the views from my deck are of the ocean but if you go the other direction, you walk from my place, which is about at Third St, and head west up to Fifth Street. That's where the city stops, and this is what it looks like on Google. The red pin is my house.

45456

Heading west from my place I believe the first urbanized area you would hit would be Sapporo, Japan. Unless you were really strict about due west, in which case I'm not even sure. You would make landfall on Sakhalin Island in Russia, but I don't think it's very populated. That whole eastern edge of Russia seems pretty empty, as does northern China and Mongolia, through which you would be passing. I found this kind of interesting because it's almost like an extension of the empty wilderness that stretches west from, approximately, my neighbour's fence. I don't find this an especially inhospitable latitude or anything, but evidently it is not overly crowded along much of it.

This is just a random picture down at one of the many docks around my place. I actually kicked around the idea of buying a float home down here, or rather: my wife thought a float home down here would be really awesome and I technically agreed, but I can't get into investing real money in depreciating assets. And the cost of liveaboard moorage is freaking insane, you might as well just pay a mortgage.

Ironically a good friend of mine in Vancouver (who is the most connected boat guy on the planet so he gets everything at a discount) is only paying around $300/month to moor his 40-something foot Monk, which he lives on. And which he bought for $2500, which is a whole other story. So apparently the liveaboard thing can be done cheaply even in the most expensive city in the country but it was cheaper for me to buy a whole house.
