Went for a short hike to a 3000-ish foot summit- winds of 40-50mph with gusts a little higher made the snow a bit stinging. Fortunately the snow and clouds started to lift on the decent. 4598745988

Everyone is pumped for a white Christmas, and all I can think is how bad this messes up everything I had lined up at work.

Looks good for one day though.

We call it The Pineapple Express.
It's going to be a Wet Christmas here in Pugetopolis; there are flood warnings up, and we've already seen some "urban flooding".

Edit to add: The Dark Sky web site is pretty cool, if you're interested in hyper-local weather. Dark Sky Maps (https://maps.darksky.net/@precipitation_rate,39.000,-95.000,4)

I went on a bit of a hike today on the trail system up the street from my house. It's pretty hilly country back there and you get into these systems of small lakes and rivers and little plateaus, it's pretty nice. I did a 12k loop that took me to a place called Heart Lake which turned out to be quite scenic. There was this super fine layer of mist on everything and it made all the surfaces look kind of unreal, like they'd been painted and then a silver wash had been applied over top somehow. The water was unbelievably still. You could look straight down into it and see the bottom at almost any distance.

On the way up you also get some pretty good views over the town.

Erin on the wheel, I am managing the downriggers and rods.

Nice day on the water but all the salmon were undersized, unfortunately.

This is by Tent Island, just south of Thetis and Kuper islands.. Sometimes there's schools of decent-sized winter springs hanging around in about a hundred feet of water here but today they were pretty small. Still, just nice to be out there, breathing the air and cruising around.

Yesterday was a special event at the Conway Scenic Railroad in North Conway, NH.
"Steam in the snow" was a photographic event, using one of their old steam engines, the 7470.

https://www.conwayscenic.com/blog/steam-in-the-snow/

I was able to get miles ahead of the train [and the crowds] to a small spot in Glen, NH, behind the White Mountain Cider Company. There's a great old trestle behind the cider mill, and the place I waited for the 7470.
A most excellent place to dine and visit if you ever get up this way.

Decided to run some 120 film through my grandparents' old bakelite Brownie Flash Film was Ilford FP4+ and processed by 120processing.com.
Pics are at a local dam used to create a lake for an upstream community. These are low rez scans, I haven't received my negatives back yet.

The wood structure is an art piece by a group that builds such things using found materials. Apparently they're active all over the Mid Atlantic. I know this because I bumped into one of the builders on my way out and we chatted for a while. Nice fella...
Article about the group: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/whats-the-curious-sculpture-rising-from-the-river-south-of-old-town-alexandria/2016/10/19/63e9494e-9610-11e6-bb29-bf2701dbe0a3_story.html

Wife and I had a rare date day, so we spent it on the trails. We decided to go to a local State Park we've never visited before.
The snow and temps in the low 30's kept the muddy trails crunchy instead of sloppy. The highlight was Horseshoe Falls with the suspension bridge and rare Ice Discs in the creek!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200312/24058528c58f500b957480d5af96a80b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200312/38da2ebe0131820660e38a561c39969f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200312/10852dda68499a3da00774b3f3b16012.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200312/537939d45afe53e1a6eb6476a9be6842.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200312/cdc91fc38df2a7e93702d276dd495632.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200312/2825f48afe2702cfeb66129142971111.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200312/0dff7eea3f5fb2cbd5ede2fd7d329428.jpg

This music has some positive power to it. Like life when it's coming back in spring into nature. :)

Went out and tried to catch a great view of spring. Literally found it in a neighbour's garden:

Magnolia

It's already evening and pretty cold here, today. So the colors are a bit dark a blueish.

My wife and I spent a week on the road just before all of this craziness hit. We didn't have a plan other than to go west and see where we ended up. We went through San Antonio, saw the Alamo (check out that 1911 in the officer's holster), went through Carlsbad Caverns, camped/hiked in the Guataloupa Mountains, and spent a few days in Austin. A few of the more interesting pictures from the trip are attached. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200323/fb342974a9466a4b6025f107ca0c72c5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200323/d5416f5f1ec29ab05087394efd87a2a0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200323/6642ee55ae63e9e0856f98de06ef9287.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200323/383f63376c0162978de8a6aec3bfd505.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200323/52f49a17b435a762144577e0c31bf21b.jpg

How did you like the Guadalupe mountains?

How did you like the Guadalupe mountains?

We had a limited exposure. The two days we were out there were extremely foggy, so we couldn't see much. The parts that we could see were great, though. The trails are well maintained if you want to stay on them, and there are parts of the forest you can wander off in for "dispersed camping" if you're so inclined (throw up a tent or hammock wherever you want). It was extremely windy, which we learned is normal.

I was surprised by how busy it was. There were a ton of people out there. One of the rangers warned us that the dispersed camping area was "more of a tailgating situation" at the moment, so we chose to stay in the site with tent pads. Might as well have a bathroom nearby if we have to be near people anyway. We were there during spring break for much of the country, so I don't know if that's normal. The forest area where dispersed camping is allowed was quite large, so I'm pretty sure we could have found an area away from folks if we were motivated.

There are two area you can camp: Guadalupe National Park, and the adjacent National Forest. Guadalupe National Park allows tent camping only in designated sites. No hammocks are allowed, and no fires are allowed. This made sense once we saw how windy it was and how unsubstantial most of the trees were. The National Forest allows fires and hammocks. You’re bouncing back and forth between New Mexico and Texas, which can have implications for carry permits from different states.

We'll go back with the kids.

I love the park, and I’ve been out there a few times. The park staffs told me spring break was really busy.

I hiked the park twice in 2019. Around 20 hours of hiking I saw one other person, deer, an elk, birds and a mountain lion.

If you like a bit more seclusion, go during some of the off times.

Glad you want to go back.

More bike than world around me, but Saturday was one of the prettiest days we've had in NoVA this year. Sunny with a high around 85 and a light breeze. I went for a 20 mile gravel-bike ride up and over Bull Run Mountain northwest of Haymarket (locals on the board will know of the area). It was a slow ride as I was just enjoying the nice weather and scenery. Normally I see very few people, mostly locals, on this route, but it was positively crowded this time. I passed or was passed by 6 other cyclists, 1 runner, and a couple walking their dog. One of the cyclists, the first I encountered, scared the piss out of me because I wasn't expecting others to be around, was lost in thought, and didn't hear him come up behind me until he was about 10' away. I literally jumped.

Tell me about it. Everything has to be paved and filled with McMansions and townhomes. :(

I suppose there is the C&O Canal Towpath if I want a really long gravel ride, but it's such a hike from my house and almost always crowded.

Chris

I biked the length of the C&O (but not including the GAP) a couple of years ago. I'm glad I did it, but it isn't high on my list to do again. It's gravel, and there are some scenic parts, but it was also 180 miles of towpath.

I love riding through the Virginia horse country (and Maryland too). I've been doing it since the mid 90s. Over that time, I've seen the suburban sprawl relentlessly spreading outward. The gravel roads in the countryside have been a wonderful new facet to explore in the last couple of years, but now I wished I had been doing that back in the 90s when I first started riding out there.

Having a rare day without COVID-19-related panic to deal with at work, I was up early anyway. Mrs. Write and I got our kayaks out on the water around 7am for some birdwatching.

55092

I got no worthwhile bird photographs despite having an abundance of riches - red-winged blackbirds and purple martens all over the place, a few grackles picking up breakfast or nesting material along the shore, a handful of goldfinches, the odd mallard, one briefly-glimpsed blue heron. However, I did manage to sneak up on this little guy lurking in a lagoon off the lake's main basin:

One of my shooting buddies shared this pic with me today. There is a barn near Huntsville, UT that has an American flag painted on it. He and his friend who is the photographer were trying to catch the Milky Way, that you can see above the barn, with long exposure times. It was pretty much pitch black until a car passed on the highway and momentarily lit up the barn.

When I was in college, I took a ride one day out to Orient point in a car borrowed from someone in my dorm. I had no idea there was a ferry there, I just ended up there by driving east until I ran out of land.

For the life of me, I couldn't figure out why there were "Welcome to NY" signs there.

I thought to myself, "Where the hell have I been? I never left NY." :p

I mentioned this site in a post a while back: http://www.alertwildfire.org/tahoe/index.html?camera=Axis-Babbitt&v=81e004f . This is the fire camera network in NV - CA. The three bar menu in the upper left lets you pick the region. Nevada, Greater Tahoe, and Shasta - Modoc are of special interest right now. For the next few days, there might be some spectacular views at times. We have several fires burning with big pyrocumulus plumes blowing up. We also have thunderstorms forecast each afternoon for at least the next few days. The combination of T-storms and some smoke in the air often makes for beautiful sunsets starting around 5PM Pacific time until maybe 8PM. Once you select a camera, there is a play time lapse feature in the upper left of the main camera view. Since most of these sites are on mountain tops, the time lapse of the fire plumes or thunder cells can be quite impressive. I'd save the best videos or images and post them for you but I don't know how. If you're around your screen late this afternoon, it would be worth taking a look.
BTW, does anybody know of an app/program that lets you capture good quality video off your screen from a site like this? I don't see a "download video" option on the site, so I think it would need to be an external option.

Did a SOTA activation on Cove Mtn (Dragon's Tooth) in SW VA last weekend. It was a 2.4m hike each way, but the last .5m before the summit is more bouldering and rock scrambling than hiking. I only managed 2 confirmed contacts in the 2hrs I was up there (Oregon and Texas), but was rewarded with beautiful weather and views.

Totally luck.

St. George's Episcopal Church was built in 1877-78 during the pastorate of the Rev. S. C. Blackiston according to a design by an unidentified San Francisco architect.

A corner bell tower dominates the exterior of the nave-form brick building. Interior features include a hammerbeam-scissor truss roof, redwood roof boards, yellow pine graining and an original 296-pipe Mills organ.

A local builder, Michael Finnegan, was the general contractor. Prolific central Nevada mason, John C. Wholey, was also involved in the project.

When it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, St. George's was the only historic Austin church still used by the denomination that built it.

Utah has a lot to see. My favorite state to visit. Spent a week exploring around Blanding a few years ago. These are in the area of The Valley of the Gods. Last was taken after a climb up the Moki Dugway. White knuckle driving. Don't take your Lexus in there. :D

Why not?

The road isn't a road in some places. It's a trail. But you could probably get thru OK if you know how to climb rocks with a low center of gravity vehicle. Graders can work most of the road but there are areas they can't touch. Believe me. I know a bad road grade when I see one. Moki is OK for pavement vehicles, just some 15% grades that may freak some people, especially flatlanders. Best advice from a local, go up, not down.

I did the Moki Dugway two up on a loaded down ST1100. It was mostly fun.

"Don't take your Lexus in there" is too broad a brush, unless you can't take any vehicles in there. You might have heard of some Toyota products doing well off road.

Yes I have. I have a 4R for that reason. Yuge Toyota fan. I had a Lexus sedan in mind when I said that. But maybe you've been in there with your Lexus. No clue.

I know the area pretty well and have a friend with a private shooting range down there, where 1 mile shots are not unusual.

Thanks, I rented it off outdoorsy.com for the week. Much cheaper than owning it :)

I was startled when I walked up on this guy a few minutes ago.
He let me get within 10 feet of him before his turning to look at me clued me in to his presence. (I need to work on my backyard SA :o )
He hung around for 1 picture, gave me a scoffing stare and flew off.

He was a pretty good size, too. Easily as tall as from my elbow to fingertips if you include the tail feathers.

Red-shouldered Hawk, maybe?

How do you like the Eno tarp? What hammock did you use?

I like it. I wish the walls were a bit longer so I could set it up higher off the ground. I'm 5'10" and to get the walls within a foot of the ground means I'm stooped over a lot while moving around underneath. It's more of an issue late at night when you have to get up to water the forest. ;) I've only used it in rain, sprinkling rain really, once. It was also windy that night. It kept the rain and wind off me. Closing both ends helped with that.

The hammock is an Eno Doublenest with an Ember 2 underquilt. The underquilt is a bit light for late fall through early spring, so I also use a sleeping bag. I haven't gone full retard with the top quilt and all.
