Is there a reason you are limited to those two choices?

For powered ear pro, I think the Howard Leight Impact Sport is the best bang for the buck on the market. Good reliability, good comfort, reasonable price.

Welcome to the forum, Alex.

This topic has been discussed many times and there are at least one or two recent topics in "Holsters, Accessories, and EDC Gear" section under the "Hardware" subforum that would point you in some good directions. I would recommend that you sift through there first as well as maybe perform a couple of searches. I would also venture a guess that this thread probably belongs in that section as well.

To answer your question, however, in general, you'll find more people recommend 3M over Caldwell. You'll probably find some people who recommend other things over 3M as well. Do some reading around here first. There's A LOT of good info here.

What is your budget and do you want electronic (amplifies conversation, non gunshot noise) or passive (regular protective earmuffs)?

I generally like Howard Leight for $50 and under. For more expensive ear protection I just recently purchased 3M Peltor Comtac IIIs and they are awesome.

Save for the whole they don't seal on people who don't have milk jugs for heads thing.

Welcome Alex.

Are you shooting indoors or outdoors? Are you using them for long periods of time (>2 hours). Are you shooting rifle, shotgun, pistol, revolver? What caliber?

Do you need to hear sounds or conversations around you (as in Instruction)? Do you normally wear a hat shooting?

Lastly, what is your budget?

Budget concerns aside, MSA Sordins (gel cups) are the best I've ever used.

I have the Budget of 50$.

$35 on Amazon:

Howard Leight by Honeywell Impact Sport Sound Amplification Electronic Earmuff, Classic Green (R-01526) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001T7QJ9O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_u1gjybJ72ZBAJ

I bought a pair in 2013. Still work great.

FWIW I bought a set of Caldwell electronics for hunting. I was only concerned about one shot, and rain was a constant threat so I didn't want to trash expensive muffs. Amazingly they have survived two years or more. They do eat batteries at a high rate of speed. Questions of quality and short battery life would keep me from using them in a class or on an indoor range.

I have the Budget of 50$.

Get a 30 dB passive like Peltor Ultimate 10.

I am on my third pair of electronics - HL Pro - but still wear the lighter, cheaper, quieter passives more.

I have the Budget of 50$.With that budget if you want electronic I would suggest getting the 3M/Peltor RageGuard. I have both those and the Howard Leight Impact Sport. the RangeGuard is superior in every way.

I would add that you should always double up on ear pro by wearing plugs with your ear muffs. Hearing is too easily damaged not to get the most hearing protection you can.

Electronic ear pro is only necessary when shooting with others (competition, training, etc). When going by yourself to practice get a good set of passive ear muffs that are inexpensive, but will off an additional 5-10 decibels of noise reduction over the various electronice headsets.

Hi Alex

In your situation I'd get the Howard Leight Impact Sports. $34 on Amazon last I checked. It is a #1 seller and offers decent NRR, fit, and electronic amplification at a good price point:

Another good pair that fits in your budget are the Peltor Sport Rangeguards. I have a pair, and while I haven't used them heavily yet, seem to be working great for me so far. A few others have said positive things about them as well. They're worth considering at least.

AlexYour first Amazon link does not have the RangeGuard model as a result. Once again I'll recommend that set from Peltor/3M. The first result on your link was the Peltor/3M Tactical 100. While there are some very minor differences (ie black v. grey, different styling on the headband) for all practical purposes they are the same, except the Tactical 100 cost $20 more.

Caldwell Hearing & Eye Protection (http://www.btibrands.com/brands/caldwell/?archive=hearing-eye-protection)[/QUOTE]
Bottom line these are listed in descending order of both price and quality.
The Caldwells work OK, pain in the butt to change batteries, may not age well.
The Howard Leights have an exterior battery compartment and they sell replacement ear cups.
The Peltors were the original electronic ear muffs, and are now readily available for about a third the price they were. (Back when the Caldwells were "cheap", they ran about twice what they do now, for a mono-only version! The Peltors were about $200 back then!)
