Do I end up with a pony in my living room, and my 3 year old (the chicken) riding it. :)

Our friends dropped by with their kiddos. Their little cowboy who's real name is Nevada was "trick or treating" off horseback.
Their mom is a former Miss rodeo Idaho, and though it may seem strange to many in other parts of the country, it really is not too surprising here to have a pony show up in the subdivision, then living room.

Yeah, it pooped on the rug after I gave him an apple. No biggie, and beats dog crap any day. :)

Took me an extra second to work out that photo #1 wasn't an elk-chicken.
My wife the equestrian might have been OK with the pony in the house, but if that was MY idea she'd have immediately known I was abducted and replaced by aliens.

Awesome! (as long g as I'm not the one that has to clean the carpet)

The Western Elk Chicken is the rare and lesser known cousin of the Jackalope.

A rare breed indeed. :)

As far as horse poop goes (aka road apples), they honestly don't bother me in the least bit. I suppose that is due to lots of exposure during my formative years, as well as college.

It is the dog poop I find disgusting.

Depends on the depth of the pile (double entendre intended).

There were a number of little ones being carted around in wagons last night. The pony is a much cooler ride.

My only issue is when the dog finds fresh horse poop, and wants to enjoy the aroma for the rest of the day. Its hose bath in the yard time then.

Theres hayride trick or treating around here, they have a route and people meet them along the way so the kids can load up on plunder. Some of the so-called adults along the way seem to have about as much fun getting dressed up to give the kids candy as the kids do. Its expanded into 2 large flatbed trailers to get all the kids and their parents on board.

Havent had any horses in the house, but they go by fairly regular on the dirt road that passes for a street here. I love it here.

Speaking of dogs..

Our pound rescue puppy Henry was SUPER excited today to get a deer leg bone for a new chew treat. His tail was going as fast as it possibly could.

He was supposed to be a family dog, but has turned out to be more of a "sibling" to the kiddos. He always has that look "What do you mean I am adopted?".

The intensity of the attention showing in Henry's eyes is grin-inspiring. I think I want to get a deer soon so my dog can look forward to a leg like that.

Its a lot of fun seeing how happy they get over stuff like that.

Deer legs are spectacular dog chews. When I first brought Haley home here from the Midwest, she didn't know what to think, she inherited a few deer bones, then got a fresh pile of her own, along with the entire skin. She fleshed off the skin, then thought it was the very best dog toy EVER. It slowly became many smaller pieces of deer skin/fur. Theres pieces of skin/fur buried all over the yard, inside and outside of the fence.

That is my kind of neighborhood and neighbors Malamute !

We have a LONG time before our little elk chicken will fly the nest, but as soon as she does, I would love to be able to live full time at our cabin and have a sort of similar view. If I could figure out how to live there before then, and be financially stable I definitely would.

Having traveled a bit and seen a good part of the this beautiful country, there really is nothing like the Rockies and the rural West, for both the wide open scenery and the people.

HCM, that pic is quite true.

I kept my Triumph Speed Triple in my living room all winter one year, and it leaked a little antifreeze on the carpet. Closest I can come to your example.

Wonderful picture and story. Reminds me of rural west Texas life.

10 years from now the "elk chicken" may be legendary on the internet. We lucky few will know the true origin of the mythical beast.

Henry looks like he's got some German Shorthair in him -- his feet look exactly like my GSP's. Nice looking pup.

Just what I was thinking, Henry considerably resembles Bella the stray GSP taken in by friends here.
