View Full Version : CRKT Minimalist at Lowes

We just finished a large rush project at work and to show his thanks the boss brought in some tacos and Lowes gift cards. For once I didn't have something broken around the house that I needed to buy so I was wandering through the tools and ran across the CRKT Minimalist with the Bowie style blade. For $20 it's a heck of a nice little knife. I've been carrying it in the side pocket of my cargo shorts and you don't even know it's there. I wasn't sure if I'd http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161014/5c7135fb9f0de84259bdde2f25bc67be.jpglike the finger grooves but they just lock in. It's pushed my Opinel and Case onto the bench. Here's a pic of it with its little buddy the Beretta Jetfire.

My local Wal-Mart carries CRKT. I picked up the Hissatsu folder for $30, which is the cheapest I've ever seen it.

I've been looking for a small fixed blade knife - didn't know those two stores carried knives like those. Thanks for the tips, fellas.

I've had the same knife for about 5 months now, and it has held up very well considering the price point. I've sharpened it up about 3 times since and its been great. I use it as a poor man's fixed blade and keep it at 11 o'clock on my belt. If I had a grinder I'd put an edge on the back side from the tip to an inch down. The little sheath isn't bad either, although I find myself tightening the screws for the belt loop quite a bit.

I like that blade A LOT. It's a decent enough knife/blade/handle shape anyway, but at that price point it cannot be beat. I have a bunch of high dollar blades that I use for my go-to (Multiple blades from Trace Rinaldi, Ban Tang, and Ian Wendy/Specila Circumstances, and I plan on more from them as well as stuff from Joey Watson), but I use the CRKT when I worry about losing the knife, but still want a solid blade.

I did not know Lowes or Walmart carried them. Thanks for the heads up.

I've also seen the Minimalist at Academy Sporting Goods around here. I think I've seen the CRKT S.P.E.W model and maybe another model or two there as well buried under all the Cold Steel and Gerber knives they carry.

OP, I inherited a Jetfire from my father-in-law a few years ago. I had not been fired in over 10 years, and I've never fired it to this day. How do you like it?

As a heads up... I ordered the same drop point as Tom, and the SPEW, and had them sent directly to Tom @ DSG for sheaths.

I'll post photos when I receive them and offer my thoughts after I compare the two.

Awesome!

Are you having him make a vertical sheath or something like his sheath for the Clinch Pick to carry appendix with the handle down?

These will be vertical IWB with his metal clip. I've been carrying a CP in a DSG sheath, tip up/handle down, for a long time now.

My reason for going IWB is due to wanting the knife concealed better than OWB on the belt. I'm much more likely to have a coworker/friend/kid's parent spy my knife than I am to have to use it under duress. I don't feel like trying to explain why I carry a knife in that manner and so forth.

It's one of my favorite fun guns. It just runs and runs. I shot a armadillo in my yard with it the other night and true to 25 ACP form it ran off and died somewhere in the pasture next to our place. That's a win as far as I'm concerned though, I didn't have to haul it off and it didn't run under the car port and start its death throes there. ( One that I shot at my moms growing up did and it sounded like a basketball dribbling as it flopped under her car, blood everywhere) .
It's not a serious use gun although I can dump 9 rounds into a paper plate at 7 yards as fast as I can pull the trigger, (pretty nice single action). I do keep it in my pocket at the house because it is so light and easy to carry. I figure it'll at least keep someone's head down long enough for me to get to the 870 or my wife to get to her Ruger.

I looked at the SPEW today at Academy and I'm wondering if it might be just a little longer than I want to pocket carry? It should be great in a IWB though.
Academy also had the Keramin version, that was a weird looking one for sure but I could see where it would slice open boxes and stuff at my work pretty easy. I don't know about that shape in the pocket though plus I'd almost feel like I'd need to get some Chuck Norris jeans just to justify carrying it. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161018/99c4f2333d58570e3aefe2f544170813.jpg

Just got mine today via Amazon (bowie version). Fits great in jeans pockets. I hardly know it is there.

Knife only it is about an inch longer than a folded Delica 4. Minimalist is 1.69 oz blade only, 2.05 oz with sheath. Delica 4 lightweight is 2.26 oz.

I know, I keep thing about that Karamin too, I wouldn't have this problem if it cost more. The thing that's keeping me away, for now, is I have no clue how I'd sharpen that blade shape once it got dull. Then there's the Wharncliffe version that I've looked at a couple of times. That devil on my shoulder keeps telling me that I could get both for about what I spent taking the wife to see Deepwater Horizon last weekend.

For those of you that either want multiple minimalist knives, you can buy 5 and get a 6th (mostly) free. There are some $100 Lowes gift cards for ~15% off on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Buy-a-100-Lowes-Gift-Card-get-a-bonus-15-Code-Email-delivery-/262672816804?rpp_cat_id=5000006550). The seller is on I've bought from before multiple times. Also, just a reminder there is an eBay affiliate search link at the top of the page.

I was not impressed with the CRKT Folts SPEW. The blade was thin and flimsy, and while the scales had a nice texture, they were too thin also.

I've considered the Minimalist on several occasions, but always pass after the unfavorable experience with the SPEW.

I always thought the SPEW looked like it was asking for the tip to be snapped off.

I ordered one with the Bowie blade last night. It was cheap and I like small utility fixed blades so it wasn't a tough decision.

I ordered the black drop point version last night. I think this will be a good companion. We'll see how good the stock sheath is but I bet I'll need to order a custom kydex one.

Agreed. I have other wharncliffe knives where the tip is solid, but the SPEW doesn't "cut" it.

My experience with the Minimalist has been great. Ordered a SPEW and you are correct, it is just too thin.

Yes. He's not gotten his because I suck and have milk crates full of stuff to ship out from the last week or so. I may have a few grey ones unaccounted for. I snagged a few of the blades to see how the fit varied and made some extras.

They're not on the site but I'll likely work on that tonight during UFC205 Fight Pass prelims.

I think the blade has potential, but as with most or all other knives, the carry system is really what makes or breaks its usefulness.

Belt wrap, yes. This does get to the point where it'll be a little weird on the belt but it'll work. I'll play with one tonight.

I've been carrying the Bowie one horizontal with the original sheath at 1 o'clock for months now. I saw Tom's post the other day and ordered the black drop point version. I like it a lot, I just want a better sheath.

I replaced the plastic belt loop and replaced it with a softloop so I can carry it in a 45 degree downward angle on the belt just like my CP.

Couple of quick phone pictures. A vertical shot would've been better but I don't have better lighting currently.

At first glance I think both of the CRKTs would work well, with the SPEW being slightly longer, and a slightly larger handle.

The spew is just $24 right now on Amazon. I'm tempted to try it out. I had the minimalist awhile back but it was so tiny and the handle broke when I was removing the lanyard.

I added the SPEW to my wish list... Holidays just ahead.
Does anyone make a decent looking desk stand for a fixed blade?
Something not decorative that lays the knife sideways... Something that looks like you just stuck the thing in a slab of wood, but nicer.

Not this..
https://img1.etsystatic.com/112/0/5901900/il_340x270.1109082823_o6iz.jpg

Maybe something similar to this but smaller (1-2 knives) with a stable stand.

Good idea Irelander! I definitely like this little guy better than the Bowie version. Adding the softloop was a good idea but if Tom makes a sheath for it I would still be all over it.
