Ed Harris' character has a scene in Episode 2 where he was loading what looked like a cartridge conversion LeMat. It's been a pretty good show so far that's trying to hit the mix between deep thoughts and old west action. Anyway, just thought I'd give a heads up on the LeMat, I've had a thing for those since I first read about them when I was a kid. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161010/d37d57c4ab94838dd7c196208110c14b.jpg

I always wished Webley and LeMat could have gotten together and made a double action top break cartridge LeMat, while I am wishing, full moon clips !

While you're wishing for that love child, why not throw in the self-cocking mechanism of the Webley-Fosbury?

Yes, its pretty deep; and Ed Harris is a spectacular villain.
A LeMat, eh? I was wondering what that thing was. Is the smooth-bore second/center barrel legit? That must have been one hell of a solid bear-ball, to punch through a foot-deep adobe wall AND the target's chest. Up until THAT point, I was going along with the program... when he blasted the poor kid with the shotgun bullet (out of a center fire conversion of a black powder revolver) I had to throw the bullshit flag.
So... true or false?:D

I was perplexed about this myself, excellent thread.

It is true.
From wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LeMat_Revolver): The LeMat revolver was a .42 or .36 caliber cap & ball black powder revolver invented by Jean Alexandre LeMat of New Orleans, which featured an unusual secondary 20 gauge smooth-bore barrel capable of firing buckshot. It saw service with the armed forces of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War of 1861–65 and the Army of the Government of National Defense during the Franco-Prussian War.
As to the actual effects of being shot by a projectile from the 20 gauge barrel, well we know how Hollywood likes to do things.

Ya gotta hate perplexion in an interesting TV show, eh?;)

Well, there you go... And it was created by a home-boy, at that.
Thanks, WB. Score one (well, perhaps a half; I doubt a lead 20 gauge bear-ball would get through that thick of an adobe wall) for Hollywood writers.

A bridge too far into complication !

A lot are slowly getting better about having the right guns. how they're used however ...
I knew someone, waaay south of the border, whose house was made of thick adobe. It was claimed that not even .308 rounds could go through. I don't know if that ever got tested but I could believe it.

I had to look them up because I thought I remembered LeMats having 16ga barrels. The repros are 20ga.

I had forgotten the originals were 16 ga.
They are available as repros, it would be fun to shoot one, but the one I handled years ago felt pretty awkward compared to a Colt or Remington percussion revolver.
Lets not forget that Jayne Cobb had a modernized Lemat.

Nope, nope, nope. We want it "simple"
They did make a cartridge, centerfire variant, but this was post-Civil War and by that time Colt had seized the bulk of the revolver market. - http://www.horstheld.com/0-Lemat-25.htm
While I have always had a fascination with the LeMat, I never could quite figure out what it did that a sawn-off double barrel shotgun and a pair of Colt Navies or Armies couldn't do better.
Or later, what a Winchester '93/97 and a pair of Smith Model 3s in .44 couldn't do a lot better...

No real advantage over the shotgun and pair of revolvers other than style. Style has to count for something though right? JEB Stuart carried one along with his plumed hat, pirate boots and beard that would make any tactical hipster jealoushttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161010/a8da92910837f5c5e1aba9aa1c72adae.jpg

They've built in a lot of lee way with it being a old west "fantasy camp". I liked that they showed Ed Harris getting "shot" to no effect in that outnumbered gun fight he got into instead of trying to sell that someone could actually pull that off. Of course right after that came the Adobe wall shot so you get the good with the bad.
The other bad that jumped out at me were the Army recruiter guys trying to enlist the newcomers. It sounded like they were recruiting for Civil war duty but I may be wrong. Hopefully it wasn't because all the Peacemakers would have thrown me right out of the simulation. Well, the blonde at the welcome center would have probably kept me from getting that far anyway...

Original LeMats were .41 caliber and about 18 ga bore for the "Grapeshot" Barrel
Had an relative that rode with Col. Moseby (God rest his soul) that wrote home said he carried one. Lost it when he dropped it for a "New York Reload" when "Blue belly cavalry rushed us from the front flank. We had to shoot and give the field most hastefully". His words not mine.

There was an old Western TV show (Johnny Ringo) IIRC, the hero used a LeMat and when the black hats thought he was out, he would shotgun them. This was in the day where Western Heroes used all kinds of trick guns - mare's leg, Lever actions with loops, Remington derringers under your belt and Sharps 4 barrel guns in every pocket, hat and sleeves.

The last couple of episodes have been filled with lots of Gatling gun time. If you look at them the right way they're just big crew sized revolvers!http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161118/ed7663871bc32f5e077da80036298572.jpg
