View Full Version : Blackhawk's New Omnivore Holster
BlackHawk unveiled their new holster system, the Omnivore, at the modern-day Marine expo.
The first thing noteworthy about it is Blackhawk has abandoned the Serpa trigger finger locking system in favor of a thumb lever.
The second thing which is interesting is the method they use to retain the gun in the holster. There is a locking insert which is attached to the accessory rail on the dustcover of semi automatic pistols. It is the part that actually locks in to the rest of the holster end it stays on the rail when the gun is drawn from the holster.
There are also versions of the holster to accommodate guns with weapons of mounted lights. On those models the holster uses the weapons like to retain the gun in place of the insert.
They claim the holster can accommodate up to 150 different types of handguns.

Very interesting, thanks for posting.
I wonder what holster fit will actually be like and how well the trigger will be protected? I couldn't find any pics with a gun in the holster.
I also wonder if only railed gun will work? I doubt it with the number of firearms that it works with, but there is the rail attachment device that goes with it .

Dumb.
Safariland will continue to get some of my money.

Another point of failure?
I get that they are trying to open a new market for themselves, but its really difficult to compete with Safariland's holster system to begin with, now with the 7ts system.....yeah.....good luck.

Looks like they have yet to update their craptastic mounting system.

Looks like a great idea for a universal holster for range use if one has a bunch of different guns. Would rather use something else for any serious purpose though. Depending on price point I'd look into stocking these; not everybody who wants a holster is a 3-Glocks McGee
Not Impressed.
I'd have to take that thing off every day to go from duty to off duty holster.

Reminds me a bit of the 5.11 Thumbdrive holster.

If Hillary wins you won't need to worry about off duty carry.

Put me in the not impressed camp. What happens if the rail device works loose over time? You have a gun you can't holster. If you carry a gun such as the USP, that doesn't have a pic rail, then the holster doesn't work. Blackhawk is trying too hard in my opinion. Don't give us a gimmick - just make a good holster. If I have to add a part of the holster to my gun then you're doing it wrong as far as I'm concerned. Not that it affects me - I have no need for anything they make.

I agree. This "feature" pretty much relegates the gun as useless for any other holster... unless of course you want to hassle with removing the lock block just to switch holsters.

The standard Blackhawk holster without any retention device is actually decent for 30 bucks if looking for a USPSA holster on a budget.
Their retention holsters blow.

Yea...but the Safariland 568 can usually be had for $40 and is a superior design to the basic Blackhawk...

Truth be told, the 568 I got for my 1911 was useful as a gun bucket only. Not that the Blackhawk is anything else...but the Safariland offered nothing to me otherwise and held the gun too close and too much forward cant...so I actually prefer the Blackhawk. To be a useful gamer gear, dropped and offset is the way I'll be rolling.

I just ordered a GLS (http://www.gunnuts.net/2014/08/25/safariland-5377-gls-outside-waist-band-holster-review/) from Amazon. $44.80 shipped (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FSOEMD8/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=ratio07-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01FSOEMD8&linkId=ee0f3cd6f7ab3ffea6b4931b9c4ac681) (my T&E holster got gifted to a cop in need). Not interested in this POS.

I have one I got in a tchotchke box at a media dog & pony show years ago that I keep on hand for that very purpose.

They also have a concealed carry oriented one now - https://www.safariland.com/products/holsters-and-gear/holsters/concealable-holsters/belt-slide/model-537-gls-open-top-concealment-belt-slide-holster-53700.html The 537 GLS. Which is definitely better than the standard GLS for concealment.
Oh and the IWB version the 575 GLS - https://holsterops.com/collections/concealment/products/575-iwb-gls-holster
I think Southnarc picked one up and found it not terrible in ECQC. I know MrWhite mentioned it not working well as an AIWB holster here: http://www.totalprotectioninteractive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19887
And the existence of the GLS, ALS, and SLS makes me question why anyone would go with the Springfield XD of holster companies...wait, I may have answered my own question here.

Was this dog and pony show in late summer of 2008? Because I think I have the same one.

Yup. It also doubles as my loaner holster.

Do they really think this is an improvement ? The only holsters worse than black hawks are the fobus and versa carry. When ever I look at a Serpa I see an ND as a foreseeable event. This is not a step in the right direction
Only interested if the "rail attachment device" also includes a 400 lumen light and green laser.

I'd settle for just a 300 lumen light.

While ratfucking my house looking for a red dot sight to mount on a .22 LR rifle (I never did find it) I came across a Crimson Trace Railmaster Pro that was probably 3-5 years old, still in its original box. I remember when those lights came out and I was thinking "man, 100 lumens, this is awesome, I can see all the things" especially after having pressure them in the actual dark shooting at actual targets.
Nowadays I can basically mount a lightsaber under my pistol and that's pretty cool.

I'll just say that I can think of a niche market for this holster and it's people who have a month at a time with random pistols they have to shoot and review.
I have a stupid molle gun bucket that's always on one of my belts because I constantly need to stuff previously unknown guns into it at the range.
For me this would actually be kind of handy.
I realize that I am not the intended recipient.
