Week 7: 3x5 Speed Push
results may be posted until 11:59pm EST on Monday 21-November-2011.

by ToddG
Range: 7yd (or other, see below)
Target: 3x5 card
Start position: shooter's choice
Rounds fired: 40

You will need a shot timer for this drill.

This week's exercise is about pushing yourself for speed on a low% target. It will involve hitting a 3x5 card at seven yards. If you cannot consistently hit a 3x5 card at seven yards slow fire, then decrease the distance to one at which you can make 3x5 hits on demand when time is not a factor.

Start position is up to the shooter but should be consistent throughout the drill. The 3x5 card should be placed horizontally (3" tall and 5" wide).

There are two strings of fire:

String 1:
During the first string, your goal is to get 100% hits.

On the beep, fire two rounds at the 3x5; record the time and the number of hits
Repeat for a total of ten runs (20 shots)

String 2:
During the second string, your goal is to push yourself to manipulate the gun faster.

Set a PAR time equal to the fastest clean run you had during String 1.
On the beep, fire two rounds at the 3x5 card trying to get both shots off before the PAR time is up
If you got both hits under the PAR, record your time
If you failed to get both hits under the PAR, record the number of hits you did get (zero or one)

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

distance
Start position (ready, open holster, concealed, retention holster)
Best time for string 1
# of hits within the time limit for string 2
Best clean time for string 2

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Awesome DotW, Todd, I can't wait to go crazy and push the envelope further than I ever have before, or crash and burn trying! Half-joking...

Sounds like a good drill this week. I'm determined to not come in dead last this time:o.

Probably will run this from concealed holster, so this can double as practice for the draw at the start of the FAST.

I like. Matter of fact, the previous drill of the week (6: Typewriter) seemed a lot more like a test, instead of a drill. (It certainly could be run as a drill, but it really worked better as a test, IMO.) This one, on the other hand, starts with a great diagnostic idea, then uses drills to push times based on that diagnostic.

Nice! Can't wait to try it. Wonder if I can get to the range tonight...
[sigh] (And I suppose I should do this concealed AIWB, instead of using my competition rig. Well, I need the practice...)

Or both...

Or both...

I try to only concentrate on one type of shooting per session. :) If I'm wearing my competition rig, I'm all competition-oriented. Any other rig----when appropriate, I check my 6, move from where I was shooting before checking, blah blah blah...basically, all the mental things that competitors (USPSA competitors, which is the shooting sport I do most) don't do in a match but should in any non-competition situation, I try to do when practicing from any other rig.

I don't necessarily do all that during each iteration of a drill. :) But whenever appropriate, I try to.

We all know that proper mental reaction, response, and followup require training as well---not just the shooting part. So, since when I'm in my competition rig I don't do it (takes time I don't have, and it isn't necessary for that game), any time I'm _not_ shooting in a competition rig, I do. And after the first couple of times, it wasn't hard keeping the reaction categories separate, and automatic.

I happen to actually shoot the same gun in USPSA Production that I use for CCW. So, any shooting practice in one helps in the other. :)

And darn it, I didn't make it to the range today. Hopefully tomorrow...

Edited to add:
Upon re-read, I notice that this really isn't discussing the drill---so if it is too off-topic for the DOtW thread, feel free to delete.

Do we need to post pictures of hte target for this? if so should we do one 3x5 for string 1 and another 3x5 or string two?

You never have to post pictures. We trust folks to report their honest results. Pics just make it more interesting!

My plan is to post different targets for string 1 & string 2. How you do it is totally up to you.

Shot this today, forgot to take pictures until I got to the second string. Replaced the 3x5 every 10 rounds to make counting easier.

Distance: 7 yards
Start Position: CCC looper under an un-tucked polo
Best time for string 1: 2.77secs
# of hits within time limit for string 2: 14
Best clean time for string 2: 2.59secs

Did this today in between re-cert qualifications, with my Gen4 G17, Defoor sights, and a mix of CCI Speer Lawman CF and Federal Toxic Metal Free, all 147gr. If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll try it with my work gear, which I know will be a bit slower.....

Distance : Shot at 7m
Start position : Blade-tech holster, open carry, with SBA in external carrier and hi-vis vest over top (affected draw a little)
Best time for string 1 : 1.88 clean
# of hits within time limit for string 2 : 13 hits (1 shot over time, 6 misses)
Best clean time for sting 2 : 1.57

I had 1 miss for string 1, about an inch high, time for those 2 shots was 1.90. Times for string 1 ranged from a high of 2.54 to a low of 1.88.

String 2 had 6 misses, and one shot past the 1.88 limit. First shots from the holster ranged from high of 1.54 to a low of 1.26. All my misses on string 2 were for the 2nd shots. My first shots were all good hits.

I'll post a pic of the target when I get home.

Made it to the range today.

7 yards
Gen 4 Glock 17 from Archangel AIWB, closed coat

String 1:
2.67, 2.50, 2.23, 2.51, 2.27, 2.43, 2.46, 2.31 (-1), 2.33, 2.38
Best Time: 2.23

(Got a bad grip on the 2.52, took me almost the entire par time just to get one shot off)
Hits in Par time for String 2: 14
Best Clean Time for String 2: 1.88 ---but that was pure luck
Best Clean Time when I saw my sights: 2.01

...going to run this drill more, if I can. Good drill!

Distance: 7 Yards
Start position : Concealed from under untucked T shirt - CB Supertuck IWB - P30ls V3 Cond. 1
Best time for string 1: 2.27 (2.72 clean was slowest)
10 Hits in String 1
Best clean time for string 2: 2.06
14 Hits in Par in String 2

I did the drill cold, then followed up with a couple clean FAST in the 5.38 - 5.90 range. I had more confidence starting my FAST, but mag changes were slower than usual at 2.5+. Not a record day for me.

Wowww. I have to admit, I was a cynic. I wasn't expecting a whole lot out of this drill. I should've taken a picture of me on the range with my foot in my mouth. It's unbelievable how much faster the second 20 rounds were when racing the PAR time, while still getting good hits! On top of that, I shot my fastest F.A.S.T. drill in 6 months at 5.39 immediately following this drill. Consider me a believer. I'll definitely be doing a lot more of the '3x5 Speed Push.'

Weapon: .40 caliber HK P30S (V3), hammer back w/ safety engaged
Holster: Comp-tac Spartan IWB at '3:30' concealed under t-shirt
Distance: 7 yards
Drill was done with hands relaxed at sides, pistol holstered under concealment, F.A.S.T. style
String one best time clean: 2.5
String two best time clean: 2.25
String two clean hits within PAR time: 15

String One:
3.35 (-1), 2.84, 3.24, 2.81, 2.68 (-1), 2.50, 2.72 (-1), 2.57, 2.81 (-1), 2.80

String Two:
2.25, 2.43, 2.37, 0 hits, 1 hit, 2.48, 2.39, 2.51, 2.53, 2.35

The tree-huggers are gonna be after me with the amount of paper I'm going to burn through doing this drill in the near future!

Shoot angry,
Steve

M&P45 w/RMR carried AIWB under jacket at 7 yds

String 1: 2.81, 2.54, 2.57, 2.98 (-1), 2.70, 2.86, 2.64, 2.33, 2.72, 2.32 for best clean time of 2.32 sec.

Set Par Time to 2.30 sec.

String 2: 2.01 (-1), 2.06 (-1), 2.23 (-1), 2.44, 2.31, 2.26, 2.28, 2.24, 2.33, 2.20 for 14 good hits inside time limit with a best clean time of 2.20 sec.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Also successfully ran a clean 5.73 sec FAST and a 462 on the 500 pt aggregate. I tried last week's Typwriter Drill again; unfortunately I seem unable to get a clean run on that thing, no matter what I do. Also failed a cold run on the Defoor pistol test #1 when I threw one of the 7 yd shots outside the box...

An RDS equipped pistol allows me to achieve good accuracy on shots outside of 15 yds, but I am still sub-par on closer, fast paced shots.

I was not terribly happy with my performance on this drill. I felt the entire time that I could be getting a lot more hits, but just could not make it happen.

Gun: Gen 3 Glock 19
Holster: Raven Concealment Phantom IWB
Distance: 7 yards
Start position: Concealed under T-Shirt strong side at 3:30
Best time for string 1: 2.65
# of hits within the time limit for string 2: 13 (this is what really ticked me off, It should of been much better even when pushing myself)
Best clean time for string 2: 2.36

Some general thoughts:

This isn't necessarily only a 3x5 drill. I picked "Speed Push" at random as a name just so we could call it something. The general concept is pretty straightforward: take something you can do correctly 100% of the time at a comfortable speed and then force yourself to go faster. You'll no longer do it 100% correctly but you'll see a very real, sudden change in your speed. Now you can back off just a hair and still get your hits on demand... just faster than before.

Don't be too upset at your accuracy on the "fast" part of the drill. I do this often with 1-shot draws and when my PAR is down below 1.0 seconds from concealment, trust me, I'm lucky to make half my hits on an 8" circle at 7yd. But I'm working on responding to the beep faster, getting to the gun faster, and getting the gun presented faster than I'm comfortable... and then my controlled, guaranteed-hit draw gets faster.

Obviously, you could take this too far and give yourself permission to miss half your shots all the time and that would be stupid. This is a specific tool with a specific purpose. It's an actual performance building drill as opposed to a test, but it cannot exist in a vacuum. I'd strongly recommend following any of these "speed push" drills with some slowfire accuracy work. Pushing your speed is good, but pushing your accuracy is critically important, too.

Cool. I'm finding that the same principles apply to learning to play music. Turning up the metronome faster than you can play the piece cleanly can help bump up your finger speed, but you have to balance that with slower work on being accurate. With time and practice the pieces start to come together......

You know, I never made the connection before but that is exactly how you learn to play drums faster. I used to have a mean paradiddle.

The required data:

Distance: 7 yards
Start position: Concealed, closed-front shirt, Gen3 G34 holstered AIWB, hands hanging naturally.
Best clean time for string 1: 1.60
Number of hits within the time limit for string 2: 14*
Best clean time for string 2: 1.42

Additional data:

Raw data from string 1: 1.64 clean, 1.60 clean, 1.63 clean, 1.62 clean, 1.69 –1 a little low, 1.70 –1 a little low, 1.73 clean, 1.60 clean, 1.67 clean, 1.80 clean

PAR set at 1.60 seconds

Raw data from string 2: 1.54 clean, 1.65 –1* a little low, 1.66 clean, 1.42 clean, 1.74 clean, 1.47 clean, 1.56 clean, 1.45 clean, 1.59 clean, 1.66 –1* a little high

*I did not perceive whether it was the first or second shots I missed with in string 2, so the number of hits within the time limit was 14, 15, or 16, depending on which shots missed.

Comments:

Happy to get 90% hits across the board, irrespective of the PAR time.

Should have gotten 100% hits on the first string.

Could have pushed myself more on the second string.

I was in a hurry when I shot this yesterday, and would like to devote more time to this drill later in the week. If I get the chance to redo it, I will redouble my efforts to shoot the first string 100% and push harder on string 2. Though for me personally, the way I did shoot it was probably very productive because I didn’t make the accuracy wheels come off as per my usual pattern. Given the structure of the drill, I was a little surprised there wasn’t a greater gap between the two strings for both accuracy and time. But that is probably because I was mentally focusing on seeing the sights aligned enough to hit and pressing the trigger, rather than mentally focusing on pace.

This drill was a great learning experience. I learned that I can really push the speed and still get good hits. My averages dropped and my hits remained consistent. I am also very pleased with my split times on the 3x5 with par set at 1.50, I have never shot that fast and accurately before. I saw what I needed (most of the time) and made the hits

G34 in CCC Shaggy under a sweater at 7 yds
String 1 best time - 3.30
String 2 best time - 3.13
Total string 2 hits - 11

I shot this stone cold at the start of my range trip today and it really kicked my ass. I'm having some trouble picking up the front site early and getting that first shot off - I didn't record any of my splits (probably should have) but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary as I was looking at the timer after each string. I for sure felt like I was having visual patience/ focus issues all day and was having to slow way down since I wasn't getting a good consistent sight picture.

I'm a big fan of this drill (not necessarily of my performance) and am for sure going to start shooting this more often - it seems like a good way to work that balance between speed and accuracy and it is individualized for the shooter.

Had to take off part of a day at work just so I could get the DotW in:o

Running Glock Gen4, G34 Ameiglo Operator Pro sights and a Keepers Kydex AIWB holster, and a closed front cover garment ( tshirt and vest) Target at 7yds.

First String
Best clean time 2.17 worst time 2.67 missed 4 times ( something hard about going slow, as I had the same thing happen on Tue)

Second String, (set par of 2.1)
Best clean 1.85 worst clean time, 2.20 had 4 times I got below 1.85 and had one miss each on them.

I worked on this some late Tue evening and had much faster times.... had 5 clean in a row from 1.71 to 1.63, now why the heck can't I do them when it counts.....( argh)

I just need to start my dry fire agin and have a better practice plan.

Just shot this drill this evening with cgcorrea at the NRA range.

G17; IWB holster (3:00)
Shot from concealment (untucked shirt)

String 1 Best Time: 3.18 (AVG: 3.34)/(18 hits)
String 2 Best Time: 2.98 (AVG 3.19)/(12 hits [only counting hits within par time])

I'm still having difficulty tracking the front sight consistently at speed and breaking the shot at the right moment, though I do feel like I have made some progress with this over the last couple weeks. Unfortunately draws from IWB at 3:00 still feel sloooow, molasses slow compared to AIWB. I moved away from AIWB after I switched back to Glock and I have definitely missed it...however sans gadget and no Shaggy's immediately available, I will likely be stuck with the 3:00 set up for a while.

I do think that two shots on the 3x5 from concealment is a good benchmark so I will be practicing this going forward and recording them in my newly created "Timed Drill Spreadsheet of Shame."

I shot this cold, with a new gun, and recovering from a 2AM arrival at IAD.

Distance: 7Y
Position: Concealed, Untucked Polo, CCC Shaggy
Best Time for #1: 1.95s
Hits for String #2: 12 (ugh)
Best Clean for String #2: 1.90s

After this drill, when I was more comfortable with the gun, I ran some drills at 1.8s with face/edge target (rather than a beep) and was getting a 75% hit rate.

Cold, S&W M&P 9mm out of a Praetor Defense holster from concealment under a Woolrich Elite vest.

distance: 7 yards
Start position: Holstered & concealed
Best time for string 1: 2.32
# of hits within the time limit for string 2: 10*
Best clean time for string 2: 2.01

I actually screwed up. I was trying to shoot all of string 1 no faster than 2.5 because that's the time I know I can reliably get 2 hits in a 3x5 card. Then on one of the strings of string 1 I just saw my front sight really well on the follow up shot and did it in 2.32.

String 2 was a total mess - I started way too fast trying to push for times right around 2 seconds. I should have started trying to shoot for 2.25s and paired it down from there. I only counted hits on strings where I got both hits off in under the par time, which I assume is how I was supposed to do it.

My attempt this evening at our freezing cold range -

Distance: 7 yards
Start Position: Holstered, concealed (H&K P30, CCC "Shaggy", carried under a polo shirt)
String 1 Time: 2.57 seconds
# hits string 2: 14
Best clean time for string 2: 1.90 seconds

LeadFarmer's run -

Distance: 7 yards
Start Position: Holstered, open, OWB (Gen4 Glock 19, Fobus paddle holster)
String 1 Time: 4.53 seconds
# hits string 2: 12
Best clean time for string 2: 2.47 seconds

My hat is absolutely off to LeadFarmer. He made such rapid improvement on this drill that I kept having to push the PAR time down because he kept picking up speed while getting his hits. I dropped it down to 3.5 seconds by the end of his run....and he was still comfortably beating it.

Phenomenal drill for breaking through barriers. To give some idea of just how good, after getting misses on a couple of runs in under 1.8 seconds, I "slowed down" and got boringly reliable hits at 2.26 seconds...which is about as fast as I could possibly go the first time I ran this drill in Culpepper. For giggles after doing the DOTW we did timed draws with 1 shot on a 1" square. Out of about 10 tries I had 2 hits...1.72 seconds, and 1.64 seconds. (Yes, I realize how fantastic that sounds, but that's what the timer said)

DOTW 7:

Best.

I'll second Tim's sentiment about the format of this drill be good for breaking through barriers. I used the same format for some 1-Reload-2's and knocked 0.5 second off my par time.

7 yards, concealed under a jacket, Gen 3 G17, had to run over by the fire between strings to load mags, write things down and rewarm my hands. I was trying out the Grip Force adapter which feels huge on a Gen 3.

1st String - Best 1 was 2.12 (most were in the mid 2.2's)
2nd String, set par for 2.2 - Best 1 was 2.08
That was the slowest but did it twice. Every other time I pushed it and dropped 1. Twice I dropped 2, those were the fastest. Dropped 10 altogether.

Tried it again after removing the Grip Force adapter and found that the grip now seemed tiny and I was having trouble grabing the backstrap high and filling the void in my hand. I did find that when I push it, I mash the trigger and most all of my missed shots are going just under the card. Then I removed the par time and told myself I'll go as fast as I need to to confirm the hits regardless of time. Funny thing, I made the par every time and best was now 1.98. I need to do that every time. Strange how when you 'try' to go fast, it's not that fast and when you 'try' to go only as fast as you need to, it's pretty darn fast. I'll be practicing drawing on smaller targets in the future.

Distance: 7 yards (I ran it on the "credit card" of an IPSC target v. the 3x5 card)
Start position: Concealed, flannel shirt, 1911 w/X300 holstered OWB, hands hanging naturally.
Best clean time for String #1: 2.07
Number of hits within the time limit for string 2: 12
Best clean time for String #2: 1.90

Toward the latter part of String #2, I began anticipating my second shot low and throwing it low. I had a nicely centered group of 6 rounds just under the "credit card." Despite knowing what I was doing, I was powerless to stop it. Frustrating!

I am definitely going to start incorporating this one into my practice sessions.

Distance: 7 Yards
Start position : retention holster (Safariland ALS). Glock 17
Best time for string 1: 3.70
12 Hits in Par in String 2
Best clean time for string 2: 3.51

Clearly I have much room for improvement. But this drill is all about pushing yourself, which is very cool.

Specifically joined once I realized my pistol skills were degrading. Haven't really done any real pistol shooting since July which is 4 months before my daughter was born. Well, my daughter is 7 weeks old today and I'm looking to get back into the groove. Maybe not with this drill though lol

Gun: Glock 17 with Redback One Sights, Vickers Mag Stop, Glock Extended Slide Stop, and Skateboard tape
Distance: 7yd
Position: Surrender position with gun in Safariland 6004 (thigh rig)

Fastest Clean Time String #2: 1.87
Number of Hits String #2: 14

This DotW was brought to you by the letters 'K' and 'L' for "Knowing your Limits".

I should have never done this drill once I realized my long sleeved polo was too tight around my waist, but this was the only time I had to do it this week.

Gun: HKP30L stock
Distance: 7 yds
Position: Comp-tac Straight Drop
Fastest Time Clean on String 1: 3.43 (almost a second slower than my good days)
Fastest Clean Time on String 2: 2.92 (miraculous) 11 hits total

This is a great drill and I wish I had more time this past week to have run it 2 dozen times.

This whole work thing is getting in the way of my DotW :D

NOTE: I have the IPSC Pro Timer on Android and it doesn't seem to do 1/10ths of a second. Am I wrong about this?

Range: 7 yards
Start Position: Blade-tech holster, M&P9, concealed under vest.
Best time for string one: 3.28 seconds (19 hits total on string 1)
# of hits within time limit on string two: 10 :(
Best clean time: 2.85 :)

This is a great practice drill that I am learning a lot from.. I am going to make it a regular part of my practice with the goal of getting consistently under 3 seconds clean.

Great to see you here, bud, and congrats on the little girl! There's a lot of that going on around here lately...

So I did a little more than just shoot this; I really wanted to compare my competition rig (vest, M&P Pro 9mm) with my carry gun (Polo, IWB at 2:30, M&P 45). I shot it once for par with my competition rig, then ran the "push" twice, once with each gun.

Gun: M&Ps, 9mm Pro and .45 Mid-sized.
Distance: 7yd
Position: Concealed, holsters and garment as above.
PAR Time from String 1: 2.98 (Most around 3.2)

Fastest Clean Time String 2, Competition: 2.40, all shots under PAR.
Number of Hits String 2, Competition: 16

Fastest Clean Time String 2, With Carry Rig: 2.62, all shots under PAR.
Number of Hits String 2, Carry: 16

The biggest surprise, to me, was that both guns produced identical hits. I'm not sure I'd expected that. There's a slight difference in splits (maybe .10) and a slight difference in draw (maybe the other .12) but I shoot the two guns very similarly. I'm pretty happy with that result.

Consistent with previous results, I had no trouble drawing and working the trigger. The difference between a hit and a miss was mostly how carefully I aimed.

Now reading everyone else's drill to see if I'm last again!:o

Distance: 7yd

Fastest Clean Time String #1: 2.76 (clean high of 3.65, missed 7 as I figured out my limits)
Fastest Clean Time String #2: 1.98
Number of Hits String #2: 12

Great drill, kind of like a walk-back drill that keeps pushing your accuracy, but pushing your time instead.

Also, can we get the new DotW out earlier in the day on Mondays? Makes it possible to do two DotW's in one trip for those if us who, you know, do something other than hit the range for a living... ;)

Actually it was a really good day at the range, I'm too beat right now to write it up in my journal thread, will hopefully do tomorrow.

I think I really freaked myself out mentally on this drill.

also the range got super busy during string 2, and I could barely hear the timer. or sometimes hear the last part of the beep. after this happened several times in a row, I just said f it and executed the drill.

Gun: CZ Shadow
Distance: 7yd
Position: Open rig. BT DOH DAA mag pouches. No concealment
Fastest Time String 1: 1.93 high of 2.41
Fastest Clean Time String 2: 1.43 Draw of 1.19. 1 run over PAR (clean) 3 misses.
Misses were 2 on the draw and 1 on a follow up. Luckily no double misses on any string. Fastest string was 1.01 Draw of .65 the a slow split of .36. I had actually scared myself with that one, the shot totally caught me off guard. Not happy about that. Draw was a hit, follow up was the miss.
