View Full Version : Sig Question

I have read several threads here on Sig and am a little confused. I am Sig ignorant-don't own one, shot one rarely, know nothing about them.

I have a friend who is considering a Sig for an EDC. I have showed him the thread and other information on the 250.

Is there a current production Sig in 9mm that is a good choice for EDC? The totality of the posts seem to be that Sig is something to be avoided at the moment, or is it model specific? If so, what models are still solid?

Thanks
Ray

Can u give us more specifics on what he wants? Does it have to be new? Plenty of used Sigs out there with a lot of service life left in them. I have always liked the p228/225 models. I just got a P6(225) that is my current carry piece. But I'd have him look at the 228. I've had 226s, 229s and 239s and like the 228 better. I have no practical experience w the 2022, 290 and 250 so can't comment on them.

I've owned a bunch of SIGs in the past. I no longer own any. SIG QC has been hit or miss lately but older guns are still a pretty safe bet.

I do kind of wish I had one of my SIGs back. It was a Two-Tone 239 in 9mm with SIG logo'd Crimson Trace grips. It was DA/SA with multi-colored Meprolight NS (green up front, yellow rear). That was a pretty sweet looking (and most importantly, sweet shooting) pistol. It was a great size for carry too.

While the latest 250 is a dog and the newer P series are getting mixed reviews concerning quality, almost everything I have been seeing and reading on various forums as well as the Sig Forum (which for an enthusiast forum, is amazingly harsh worded about new Sigs) about the SP2022 has been very positive. Add to that the fact that one can be had for well under $500 and it really makes them worth a look. They are in the G19/USPc size range, slightly more bulky than a P228/229 so depending on method of carry can fulfill the EDC role. Granted, the majority of those raving about the gun are probably what many here would consider "dirt shooters" and have not pressed the gun hard, but it does have a good pedigree and is very popular with European and other foreign police agencies.

I have had mine for 3 years now and I have had zero issues with it other than the factory night sites needing to be adjusted when new. I consider it the functional equivalent to my more expensive guns and its cost of replacement makes it my choice for a EDC/travel gun.

I'm not sure I can provide much further. It is simply going to be an everyday carry pistol. It doesn't need a lot of bells and whistles, just a solid pistol in 9mm.

Are there good sources for used Sigs?

I am stuck with a Sig no matter which I choose. Most often it is a 226, but the occasional 228, or 239 ends up fitting the bill. I have not seen much in terms of quality issues with the new guns. I also have a parts bin to grab whatever I might need, but the only thing that has ever been replaced on any my Sigs in recent memory has been a recoil spring that broke in half. Pretty sure those are less than $10. I'm also pretty sure that gun went well beyond the factory suggested replacement interval. Since I don't know what round count that is.........pretty good chance it exceeded it.

Have your buddy look for an old (made in W. Germany) P-225 or P-228, and he will be just fine. The older P-226's and P-220's are also excellent pistols. I wouldn't buy a Sig made in the last 10-15 years for the commercial market.

I recommend pre-2005 P225, P229, or P229 P-Series SIG-Sauers. The Sigpro 2340/2022 line has been consistantly excellent throughout production, one of the quiet successes at SIG-Sauer, and remarkably unmarketed. It is the only contemporary SIG-Sauer that I recommend without any equivocation.

Best, Jon

My sample of one 2008 production 226 was flawless through a couple thousand rounds. It had also had a go over by a smith before I got it.

I think the 229 is more suitable for carry, though.

For reference purposes, I am 5'9" and about 220. I routinely easily conceal and carry a full sized P226, and spare 20 round mags.

I'm 6'3, 280. I can conceal a 226, but I generally prefer guns in the slightly smaller 229 range for that purpose. :)

That said, I'm currently carrying a M&P9 FS. But mostly because Smith doesn't make it in a size between that and the too-small-for-my-hands M&P9C.

ETA:

I meant to mention that I've never really been on board with the fetishism toward older W. German SIGs.

Yeah, taller guys tend to do better concealing full sized pistols. I pull it off with selective clothing, and at times give up my comfort to do it. But the honest to goodness size differences between the 226 and 228 is very minimal. The flatness of the 239 makes it a little more comfortable in most cases, but overall size is right along the same lines as the 228, and at the expense of half the rounds of a 226. All things I have to consider when making that choice.

I'll echo the endorsements for the P2202. They are really quite good guns, perhaps the only SIG that I've shot and felt really impressed with, and online they are almost always under 400 dollars. Their aftermarket is likely zero to none but they are solid guns.

Otherwise a used P228 would be my first pick if I was told to buy a SIG for carry.

5'9", 160. Can easily conceal a P226. Issued a P229R now that is a tad easier.
