View Full Version : Retention of Pocket Knives

I think the pocket clip is the greatest innovation in pocket knives since sliced bread.

But what do you do to keep from losing unclipped knives from shallow modern pants pockets?
I haven't carried an unclipped knife since I lost the monogrammed Christmas present knife some years ago, but I have one I want to use now.
I am thinking about a short lanyard with a little spring clip on the end. The knife might dangle but it wouldn't be lost.

Something like this attached to the knife via lanyard or metal ring

Interesting. Ive caught a clipped knife pulling things out of my pocket and dropped them. Never lost a plain pocket knife in a pocket.

In general I dislike clips unless I can clip it where I wont scrape my hand against it getting in the pocket. Carhartt leg pocket works ok for that.

Have thought of removing clips a couple times.

They make pocketknife clip on sheathes that you clip to your pocket. Might work for you depending on the size and type of knife.

This is just a random image...

The nice thing is that you won't feel the knife laying in the bottom of your pocket, if that matters.

Ive thought that a little sleeve inside the pocket (pocket in a pocket) to clip a knife or just put a regular pocket knife in would be cool. It would always be where you expect it if theres other junk in the pocket.

I usually have 3 to 5 pocket knives on me, the higher number when working carpentry type work. Wearing a vest gives another spot for a knife that's easy to reach. The Case XX canoe knife lives in the lower right vest pocket.

Years ago I had Ron Ryder make these for me:

Here's a link to the thread (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/489227-Leather-Back-Pocket-Protector-by-Ron-Ryder) where I discuss them. (The knives above are by Tony and Reese Bose.)

I primarily use them in the front pocket but since Tony's knife was called the "back pocket" I named it accordingly.

Works in any pocket, obviously.

I carry a Schatt & Morgan Junior Scout on my key chain using its bail. The key chain itself has two rings, so that I can separate the car keys from the rest of the keys.

I rarely clip a knife to my pants as I am often in dress slacks or a suit, and the clips damage those pants. I also carry a small Sebenza loose in my left front pocket. The Sebenza has a lanyard tied to it that allows for retrieval. It is my primary knife, used for everything from opening boxes to slicing hard-boiled eggs. The Junior Scout is more for opening mail and beer, but it is a pretty useful little knife.

Yes, I've lost them in the brush hunting. Had them fly off training the draw from concealment. Handy in some respects.

Sorry about that, I think that bladeforums may block outside access of the images. (But since they're my images, here you go.)

(Tony Bose made 4" "Back Pocket" on left, Reese Bose made "Sowbelly Stockman" on right)

Did the link to the discussion on bladeforums work for you?

Sebenzas are great and so is the company, sadly without Chris Reeve involved directly these days.

I carry a small "Glorious" Insingo that I got a couple years back and also a large "regular" in BG-42 which my wife bought me for my birthday in 1998.

Outside of my custom knives, they are two of my absolute favorites. Heck, even when I include many of my custom knives.

The Case XX canoe knife lives in the lower right vest pocket.

I still have the one my late paternal grandfather gave me nearly 35 years ago. It is one of my most valued possessions. I'm reluctant to carry it now, but it was a constant companion as a boy.

Actually, most of my suit trousers have a small pocket like this which usually ends up carrying my small Sebenza.

I didn't realize modern pockets were shallow. All my pants must be ancient.

I generally have a Sebenza or a Spyderco clipped on my pocket and a SAK Cadet Alox loose.

Never lost either. Fingers crossed.
