I scored 500 pcs of Xtreme plated .451" 255gr flat points.

Most of the load data I've been looking tops out at 230grs.
Some of the info I do see out there on these heavier ones keeps referencing bowling pin shooting and .45 cal revolvers. I did see some stuff about people messing with their slides and springs on certain 1911s. I really don't want to "mess" around with my WC CQB at all.

Is this bullet simply too heavy to be shot out of a standard 5" 1911 as is?

I tried 255-grain bullets in a fixed-sight 1911 a few years ago. I think I got the data from an older loading manual, probably Lyman or Speer. The recoil was sharp and POI was off, so I didn't really care for them. That said, this may be of some use: http://www.handloads.com/loaddata/default.asp?Caliber=45%20ACP&Weight=255&type=Handgun&Order=Powder&Source=

I've come to think of the 1911 as a 230-grain gun. If I want to shoot heavier bullets, I go to a revolver.

I am better off with 200s or 230s and calling it good?

Probably. Or you could use the 255's as a reason to buy an HK USP in 45 or a Smith revolver.

I think I cracked the slide on a Megastar with 255s.

The appropriate load for .45 ACP is a 200 LSWC at 850 fps.

I used to shoot lead 255s SWC in 45 for IPSC - really soft way to make major but I swear you could see them flying down range. 1911 felts "sluggish". I soon switched back to 185s or 200s LSWC. I will see if I can find my data. You may want to search in the Brian Enos Reloading 45ACP sub forum. I would not shoot them "hot" in a 45ACP.

I appreciate and acknowledge that correction. I would further say that it's the appropriate *re*load *for most purposes*.

I played with some 250 gr bullets in the 45 acp in a glock 21 and a 1911. I started out with 6gr unique and worked up. I was looking for 900 to 950 fps. Disclaimer here; this is from my memory so I maybe incorrect. I'd have to check my notes. I still have some and hunted deer with it last year and maybe again this year. In the 1911 didn't run heavy recoil spring but a flat bottom firing pin stop. John Taffin did an article in American handgunner a couple years back about heavy bullets in the 45 acp and there are some guys on glock talk and the 1911 forum that posted about it if you're interested in searching for them.

Theres been a number of discussions of them on the castboolit forum also. Ive had some interest in the load, (I loaded some long ago and they seemed fine) but Id more likely have a revolver for what Id want the heavy 45 auto loads for.

One thread. Theres more when I searched before.

I have decided to just order 230 coated boolits and carry on like this for now instead due to my inexperience with handloading and stuff like that. I'd rather just do everything by the book at the moment.

Thanks to all of you who took some time to answer my inquiry.
