View Full Version : Ranges in the D/FW Area

So my SO and I are finally going to take the plunge into shooting regularly, and hopefully, competing. The old hole-in-the-wall range by our house was closed permanently last year, and while there are a number of ranges about, I wanted to ask the folk here for input.
Two must haves: allowing rifles, and letting you collect your own brass. We're reloading now, so that's non-negotiable.
Nice to haves: allow drawing from the holster, using a timer, and a rifle range that goes to at least 100 yards. I'll pay for a quality range, so while I can't say "price isn't an issue," we're prepared to drop money where it's warranted. I would greatly prefer this place be within an hour's drive of our home at 76148. Any friendly PFCs about would be a bonus.
If any of y'all have suggestions, or at least pointers on what to avoid, that would be super helpful.
Thanks.

The ranges I know of that meet your conditions are pretty far from Ft. Worth. TDSA is decent re: price ($300/year last I checked) and very flexible re: rules but is also a bit...odd. It's south of Dallas proper off of I-45.
The nicest outdoor range I've been to in the area is ETTS, but that's a real hike for you - it's in Waxahatchie. It's also more expensive, $600 a year (again, last I checked).
I hope there is something closer for you.
Have you checked out Quail Creek? I don't know much about their restrictions.

Elm Fork and the Dallas Pistol Club may allow drawing from a holster. The new Frisco Gun Club may meet your pistol needs as well. A 100 yard range is another matter. Dallas Gun Club has a 100 yard range but it is primarily a private shotgun sports club.

From a 3-Gun friend of mine:
http://www.ettsgunrange.com/#main-page
"here is the link to the club; 100 and 200 yard sight in range, 300 to 1200 yard long range (must qualify to shoot on this range), currently 4 active tac bays for rifle, pistol, shotgun; 6 active pistol bays including shotgun( no slugs on these bays) and development on at least 14 more pistol bays. other tac bays and natural terrain used for 3 gun & steel match competition.
Yes drawing from holster is allowed and rapid fire including legal automatic weapons."
Worth a look.
I shoot at ETTS; it fits all of your criteria. It's an hour from Watauga, more or less. I'll be happy to take you there if you want to check it out.

Private club near Sanger. Pistol, rifle out to 200 yds, trap, skeet, 5 stand, informal club matches, some restrictions on drawing from a holster. Long waiting list to join (years) but possible to buy a membership if you can find someone willing to sell.
Dallas Pistol Club may be better for pistol specific use, but NTSA is a very nice all-around club.
You can come out and shoot a club match some Saturday morning and see what you think. Feel free to PM me if you have some specific questions.

Ouch the waiting list is 4 yrs long at NTSA.

I'd love to see you join. Get on the list! There's a reason a lot of people want to become members. Come out for one of our Saturday morning club matches. $20 for non-members, around 5 stages, 100-150 rounds, and shooters of all levels. Good chance to learn and practice. PM me if you plan to show up so I can look for you if I am there.

Elm fork and the Frisco Gun Club definitely do not allow drawing from the holster.
I go to Targetmasters Indoor range in Garland http://targetmasters.com/.
They have a 50 yard indoor range for rifles and a 25 yard indoor range for pistols. They allow me to draw form the holster since they have known me for ages. I think they require you to ask permission before they let you draw from the holster and want to know about your training background before they do so. They also may not let you do so if the range is packed.

Proactive Defense (http://www.proactivedefense.net/), just north of Texas Motor Speedway on I35W will give you everything you're asking for except the 100+ yd range. I think they shoehorn a 75 yard in. They have a nice 25 yard and 10 yard range for rifles and pistols. A few guys come out with full auto. They have steel targets for your pistols.
It's pretty quiet during the week and fairly busy on the weekends, especially if they're running classes. I've never had to wait for a spot. They run some interesting classes but I haven't taken any of them.
All the RSO's are cool. Very safety oriented without being dicks.
I'm on the wait list for DPC because it's closer and a cheaper. I shoot IDPA at Elm Fork.
