View Full Version : "New" PF Hat Group Buy: Feeler

I'd like to suggest a Group Buy for consideration.

Currently, there is a single Pistol-Training ball cap available in the web store:

http://shop.spreadshirt.com/p-tc/

9591

Now, I'm sure this is a nice hat, but I spend MUCH more time on Pistol Forum than Pistol Training. And I'm not a fan of the logo (there, I said it.). I'm also not a fan of black.

Ok, so I would like to suggest a different option.

Picture an all orange hat, with the same PF logo currently used on the Tapatalk home page. Like this:

9592

...but in the shape of a hat.

So, the reason I like this design is that first, it is not immediately recognizable as a 'gun' hat. Meaning, it promotes Gray Man. I could wear it to the mall food court, and not get made by the general public.

Second, if you *are* on P-F.com, it will be immediately seen for what it is.

Third, it's orange, which increases visibility.

Fourth, it would not require a lot of fiddling around with a logo, it's just two letters, on an orange background.

Since ya'll probably aren't thrilled with putting up the cash to commission a run of these for a future "maybe" sale, I'd like permission to run a Group Buy thread, solicit interest, and somehow work out payments.

I would volunteer to help curate the Group Buy, take comments, keep a list of interested parties, and bring the Group Buy back to the Leadership to decide if they want to pursue.

Thoughts?

Yes?

No?

Maybe?

I'm into it.

With the one stipulation being that it needs to be a good quality hat.

Think New Era 39thirty or similar.

I almost never wear hats but would grab one because reasons, assuming it is not a cheap ass party favor hat with velcro or snaps.

Count me in as interested for sure. I like snap backs and or Velcro adjustments though, so maybe two versions. Orange front with grey mesh in the back would be cool like black palms range hats. http://www.blackpalm.net/Range-Day-Hat--Multicam-Tropic_p_81.html I love that hat but it's too Timmy for anything but the range/classes.

Right, I'll take that (^^^ all the above comments) as a yes.

Let me get with the Leadership and see what vendors are available within their current eCommerce system, linked in the OP.

It occured to me the orange PF logo would also make a cool velcro morale patch; I'll leave that idea as a homework assignment for another day.

Be back in a day or three with some options.

Mods: if there is a Group Buy forum, please could this thread get towed there. Or, I'm fine if it sits here if you'd prefer.

Actually I'm not sure if we *have* a group buy forum...?

Ha! Yeah, maybe, but the logo is a good simple one. Ultimately, the branding of what is decided will be up to the owners (Tom et al) since they own the copyright.

I'm interested and agree all orange is less than desirable.

What about putting TLG somewhere discreetly on it? Maybe on the back under an American flag or something?

Ok, it seems that there are enough folks interested in a gray PF logo hat to make some enquiries.

This is for the Admins / Mods

1) It would seem easiest to have a new hat option added to the available selections on the Spreadshirt web site. How does that work? Will an Admin need to contact Spreadshirt and arrange to have this new hat option added?

2) I don't know / can't tell whether the existing $18.99 black hat option if of good quality to serve as a 'like' product. I.e., say we want to "just add a new hat to the catalog, change the color to gray, add an orange "PF" as per the attached *.jeg". Can we do that?

3) About the design, how would we go about getting a *.jpeg of the orange "PF" logo to the hat company anyway?

4) Some have mentioned the addition of a "TLG" or "Rampage" embroidery (on the back?). How do we find out if this is possible?

Short answer yes, depending what it looks like. I have no idea of the quality of the PT hats, but I like the design/color combo.

IMHO, when I see an Orange hat I think either Hunter or Highway worker.

Funny watching all the "how about...... "...
I'm as guilty as the rest...

Another option on the logo...... p-f (lower case).
+1 on gray cap instead of all orange.

ETA: If it's just a simple square-ish shape with some letters, you can easily make the logo yourself using free tools.
I like Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/download.html)
Most online print shops can work from JPG or PDF files saved from Paint.NET.
Just be sure to check with the shop about minimum resolution required.

Ok fellas, I don't want a new username background adornment , so I could use some help.

I don't mind doing this, but we need to locate a suitable logo hat maker, and work out the details on the hat order. If anyone wants to help with this, let me know.

I feel like a good retailer will:

- Accept orders from 1 to 1,000 units
- Be able to manufacture a user-supplied design, once approved by the P-F admin team
- Be able to 'store' the agreed design/details for subsequent purchases, for say up to six months
- Offer a secure checkout, and reasonable production and shipping times

Let me know if you'd be willing to head this up.

We also need to work on the hat design itself. Based on the feedback in this thread, it seems folks want:

- A gray (generally) hat, with the orange "PF" logo.
- Be of high quality, i.e. not one of those "hold my beer and pull my finger" plastic mesh caps
- Have a one size fits most style, with Velcro adjustment
- Optionally have custom embroidery i.e. 'TLG'
- Not have a steel center top "button" to avoid pressure when wearing ear pro

For me, I like cloth hats, and could see a nice medium gray with the orange "PF" logo embroidered on it.

Whatever design is drawn up, it needs to be run by the Admin team for approval, who's say will be final. So, if you want to help in this role, let me know.

Since the design of the hat may be guided by what the retailers have to offer, it seems to me the first step is to locate a reliable hat logo maker, then work on the specifics.

I'll be working on this over the next couple days, and report back on what I've found; but if anyone else wants to help push, let me know.

Rich

Same deal: Any good morale patch makers? I'd give preference to Military or LEO owned businesses, if known.

Size / type of patch?

I am guessing 2" x 2"? Since gray seems popular, what about a gray patch with orange embroidery?

Price point? What would you pay for one?

Admins: Would you see this as a fund raiser for Rampage, the site in general, or both? (Point Being as p-f.com owns the IPR of the logo.)

My preference is for a rectangular patch - 2" x 3" - in orange with white lettering... or grey with white lettering and an orange outline around the patch and letters.

Price-wise, I am flexible... but I do certainly agree that I'd get more use out of a patch and would probably buy more than one.

Oh yeah, reflective lettering might be cool as well. And maybe a "blackout" version with grey lettering on black... for night ops ;-)

Color: black, white, green (as in Hunter Green), or grey, in that order. No camo
US flag on backside
Material: breathable, stain resistant, bleed/fade resistant. No beanie button (maybe mil-syle cap?)

Check suppliers: given today's manufacturing, it may not be necessary to have only one color cap. Small batches may be allowed depending on how the PF / flag patches are applied.

My very limited experience with embroidering patches is that letters need to be a minimum size in order to be legible after embroidering.
Size depends somewhat on font and on equipment used. Easy to tweak.

Hasn't even gotten to the appropriate shade of grey yet either. Can't be too light because it would stain easy, can't be too dark because then it would just be black. Needs to be just right.

OK, I'm getting kinda iffy about this. I thought the idea was to fly under the radar? Morale patches and I guess therefore velcro on hats to stick them too seem to fail the radar test.

As I said, there will be an assortment of PF swag. I'm all about low key and under the radar so expect much of it to that way, but I'll probably make some stuff that's a little more in your face for people who dig that sort of thing.

I'm guessing the hat thing will be sorted shortly after the wrist watch thread.

I'll be standing by for the officially official PF hat of officialness.

I'm not really into a combo PF/TLG logo -- mostly because I don't think Todd would have been into it. But maybe we can do a special edition thing if it's fair subdued and not too garish (and I can get his wife to sign off on the idea).

Here are a few versions of an idea that I very quickly threw together. If the letter forms look "off" that's because I drew everything by hand and they aren't fonts (at the very least I probably need to round off some of the outer corners of the G). These aren't meant to be finished products, just a quick demonstration of an idea.

9654

9655

9656

The P and F are supposed to look like the P and F from the watch face.

These are something I'd envision fairly small (maybe an inch tall) on the back of the hat or as a small patch.

Tom,
I like the second one. Would be great to have a subdued gray hat with that logo.

I think the best thing to do is focus on finding a good base hat first and not looking for a place to embroider the hat. Shitty hats are everywhere. So are embroidery services. Focus on the hat I'm not going to sign off on a hat with a button on top (unless it comes with a check large enough to qualify as fuck you money -- and that amount gets smaller and smaller every day so who knows). That's how much I hate buttons on hats. Additionally, we're going to need at least two sizes even if they are adjustable. One size will NOT work.

I despise wearing a hat with a center button thing. Makes my head hurt when I wear ear protection.

Twelve pages and I had already posted this on page #2.

As far as non-fitted caps go, I really like the hats sold by go ruck. They have a buttonless crown and a big Velcro field. If y'all just did a morale patch I'd be set.

Tom, so far, the Goruck hat posted by JAD is the only one I've seen with no button.

It is a black hat with a velcro patch friendly front.

If the "patch" concept was reconsidered, I'd be good with the goruck+patch combo.

Goruck also appears to be veteran owned, but I don't know anything about the owner.

Button-free hats are pretty common. SKD has a couple. So does Arc'teryx. RE Factor does too. Even Condor. Several manufacturers have button-less hats (I know Magpul does, and so does Daniel Defense). Lots of options for button-free.

Ok, I'll look into those and see if they fit the criteria.

So far, I have:

- Buttonless
- Two sizes
- Gray or nondescript
- Not be shitty

Question: If the goruck hat was available without a velcro patch base, would that fit the bill?

Honestly, I'd have to try a sample hat first but probably "yes" as far as I'm concerned.

ETA: I see that it only comes in one adjustable size. Perhaps they've cracked the code on making a one-size-fits-most/all that doesn't suck.

Ok, that helps. I''ll use it as a yardstick in evaluating the other options.

My Geissele hat came from Lighthouse Branding and Merchandising Agency (800-481-4276, lhbma.com). One of my Hornady hats is from Outdoor Cap, the other from BSW Headworks. Vertx hat is from Quake City Caps. An old HK hat, unique for being a lightweight ripstop fabric, had the phone number 919-212-3796 on a tag, which Google matches to Reggie Matthews Promotions. My LaRue hat did not have any other info on it. Just a few possibilities to throw out there.

FWIW, I wouldn't worry too much about finding a "buttonless hat". The folks selling them without are (in most cases) purchasing them as a normal hat with a button, then removing it and adding a velcro patch, their embroidery, etc... They're all sewn the same way underneath.

There's a company called Competition Headwear in Denver that sells USA made caps in a variety of styles with custom embroidery. They're of good quality and supply a few different known entities in the industry with their base hats. Crye Precision is one example. I'd bet they'll even pull the buttons off a custom order if folks felt that was needed to pass the mustard. ;)

Probably best to email them. I don't see one on their site without a button, just this from the "Services" page:

Our hats are custom made to your wants. You pick the style, the color, the fabric, and where you want embroidery. We can omit the button on top, do embroidery on the bill, back, sides, or, of course, front. We make unstructured as well as structured, mesh back, fitted, low profiles to high profiles. Our fabrics range from cotton twill, to nylon, waxed, cotton ripstop and alot more. Some of the options we offer are shown but if you do not see what you want then just ask. Chances are we will be able to make it for you.

No, and in fact Tom has indicated he would not approve a design that did not come in at least two sizes.

I'm hoping that we can work out a plan to allow multiple or at least a choice of designs. I greatly prefer adjusting a velcro tab to fit and leaving it alone. I really don't like elastic hat bands.

Back in the mid '80's when we were briefed up on that, it was so classified it was almost unusable.
Trust me, there was much artful Googling before I posted that.

If I ever have fuck you money, the first thing I'm buying is an E63 Wagon.

Wagons are cool, but for me it will be an early '70's Plymouth Satellite wagon with a Hellcat crate motor.

About the hats, I would prefer a Columbia Coolhead, but in Kryptek camo, brim length between normal and fishing, operator velcro patch on top with IR reflective P-F logo, and choice of velcro or sliding buckle thingy.

Seriously, I'll buy whatever.

Incorporates orange.
Plenty of room for logo.
No one will assume it is firearms related.
Propeller will keep ear pro from slipping off backward if used as range hat.

The proper makes it too tactical. Maybe without the propeller and in different shades of grey?

Sorry. Couldn't resist but would really LOVE to see a nice hat in gray come out of all this.

How quickly things change. First it's a group buy for a hat, then it's a group buy for a hat without a button on top, now it's a group buy for just the button. :D

More flair will certainly go well with my multicam and kryptek wardrobe. :p

No, not too late.

I think we are finalizing on a hat supplier. I need to PM Tom and check in on that this week. This is the leading candidate:

http://www.companycasuals.com/reggiematthews/b.jsp?id=126&parentId=1

My take, from screening through all the discussion on cars, trademarks, Kryptek, propellers, M&P accuracy, Jimmy Hoffa and 33,000 missing Hillary emails, is that "we" want:

- Generally a cloth unstructured billed cap with no button
- Available in low-impact, Mr. White mall food court gray, tan, or possibly orange for GJM, and Kryptek for VDM.
- Either one size fits pretty much everybody, or two sizes
- Either velcro, leather buckle, or both

This may or may not have a velcro tactical patch on top for Drang to avoid awkward detection by the odd AC-130U orbiting at 1,200 AGL. A special patch design is in work for orizon06's IDPA vest.

Stay tuned.

Strictly? No. However, saying that gets you labeled as un-American by people who don't care about the flag code (which is advisory only).
As I understand it, after US vs Eichmann, he code is essentially advisory aside from application to government agencies.

And I'm okay with most everything so long as its done out of and with respect.

I just wanted to add a brand name/company for consideration:

Yesterday at a Gun Range outside of San Antonio, they had these ball cap shooting hats by Condor.

I was able to examine one very closely.

Condor Mesh Tactical Cap (Tan, One Size Fits All) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004O2GUPE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_U.u4yb8AXWTWN

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170402/9a9357da6ce831379625666388443b9a.jpg

They appear to be imported, but of decent quality. The mesh back allows air flow, and there was Velcro on front, rear, and back. It had no top button.

The ones I saw were logo'd, and about $20 retail.

Just wanted to put this in the thread as an option down the road, before I forgot about it.

The Condor hats actually fit my man-sized head pretty well. Having said that, I'm not interested in selling an imported hat at this time. I do currently have a tab open in my browser for place that makes (cuts, sews, assembles, and embroiders) hats here in the US. I'll likely get some samples from them in the next few weeks.
That sounds great Tom, I fully support sourcing it from an American based company count me in.

Yeah, no hats this year. Sorry. Next year. Soon™. Whatever. :)

I will have some (probably too many) t-shirts/sweatshirts/hoodies available any day now. They're actually on the taudevgroup website now (https://taudevgroup.myshopify.com/collections/pistol-forum-com) (because I'm too cheap/poor to pay for another web store), I just need to alter the copy from the default. Unfortunately, they are produced on demand (on super fancy high-end DTG printers) so there's no inventory. I have no idea what the order deadline to have them by Christmas is, but I'm sure it's rapidly approaching.

Just ordered one of the coolio black on black items. Great choice to offer those. Will be back for some short sleeve stuff in the spring!

So I know this thread is lengthy, and a lot of things have changed. Another hat has been on my mind for a few months, and I was trying to think of something that I would like to represent by wearing a hat. This forum is definitely something I would wear a hat for.

American made, no button, unstructured, with Velcro size adjuster would be pretty much my ideal set up. But I've lived with a button on my hat for along time and could continue to do so, I've worn structured hats before and it's not the end of the world, as long as it fits the Velcro sizing isn't that important. I've never had a mesh back, but would be cool with or without mesh.

Basically, I'm not picky about the hat to much as long as the final product comes together well. The only thing I am picky about is having a hat that doesn't scream gun, but is a subtle hint to those who know. I also wouldn't go for blaze orange...

More or less just wondering if this is still in the works.
