In light of recent threads on short rifles, I'm sending along a couple of good articles looking at the subject in both .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor rifles:

So from reading the articles, short barrels lose velocity but not accuracy. There is an optimal length based on caliber, load and application of the firearm. We want short barrels for handiness and to reduce weight.

It was interesting to note that in one article, the .308 in 20" was considered a good compromise and the .300 WM in 22" was considered a good compromise.

Short barrels are usually more accurate. (I think precise is the proper word) less vibration and decreased harmonics. The precision shooters have noted this for years.

Short barrels tend to be more stiff. Stiffness tends to increase accuracy potential. Fluting the barrel will reduce weight but also reduce stiffness.

This was originally posted in 308 semi auto thread. I thought it was an interesting viewpoint. http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2014/01/daniel-zimmerman/practical-applications-short-barreled-precision-rifle/
