Week 173: Invisi-Drill

Results may be posted until August 15th, 2016.

Designed by: Gabe White
Range: 7 yards
Target: USPSA Metric, IDPA, or similar (you need a cardboard silhouette target with a body A/-0 zone and a CNS box in the head), plus extra cardboard/targets - see pictures
Start Position: Holstered or Ready, shooter's choice
Rounds Fired: 22

For this DotW, we'll practice engaging an adversary who is behind concealment, based on inferred body position.

First, you need to put together a target that has simulated concealment. There are lots of ways we could arrange this, but let's start simple, with the target upright and only the top of the head visible. If your target does not have a CNS box in the head, then add one (ignore the circle drawn in the head of the target in my picture - I used the existing upper A-zone for this drill - a 3x5 card is easy to add if your target lacks a CNS box.) Here's what I made, pictured from the front - you can just see the white top of the head sticking out from the brown targets I used as simulated concealment:

Here's the backside - score it from this side at the end of the drill:

Here's the target hanging from the target carrier, as seen by the shooter:

Shooter's choice of holstered or ready as the start position - work out of the holster, but if your range prohibits drawing, then use ready instead. No extra shots allowed.

String 1: At the start signal, present the gun and shoot 6 to the body (Bill Drill.) Record your time.
String 2: Repeat String 1.
String 3: At the start signal, present the gun and shoot 2 to the body and 1 to the head (Failure to Stop.) Record your time.
String 4: Repeat String 3.
String 5: At the start signal, present the gun and shoot 2 to the head. Record your time.
String 6: Repeat String 5.

Score the target from the back. Here is how mine looked:

Scoring will be very simple: A/-0 zone is no penalty. B/C/-1 zone is + 0.5 seconds per shot. D-zone is + 1.5 seconds per shot. Misses are + 2.5 seconds per shot.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Gun and target used: Gen3 G34, USPSA Metric target
Start position - holstered or ready: Holstered (Keeper, concealed under a polo shirt)
String 1 time: 2.17
String 2 time: 2.21
String 3 time: 1.89
String 4 time: 1.68
String 5 time: 1.90
String 6 time: 1.87
Total time for all strings: 11.72
Total penalties: 1.00
Grand total score (raw time + penalties): 12.72
Observations - anything you noticed: Definitely adds a little mental stickiness (and time) to target by inferred location, even when the inferred location is as predictable as it is in this drill.
