I've got a new M&P 9 that just tossed the white dot out of the front site on the very first round...which I was sort of expecting given some of what I'd read about recent QC issues with the "new" S&W sights versus the Novak's. Not happy about it but I'm not surprised either. So I want to fix it with some paint until I can get some HDs to replace the factory sites.

What paint, preferably orange or white, do you use for this type of fix? just plain old model paint from Hobby lobby or one of the other such places my wife visits weekly? or is there an actual product for this sort of thing.

Thanks!

I use white appliance enamel from Home Despot/Lowe's as an undercoat. After the white is thoroughly dry, fluorescent orange model paint.

I use hard enamel nail polish personally. I use a white base coat and have found a metallic flake orange to work well. The flakes catch the light and draw the eye right to the front sight.

I use yellow Testors model paint I found on sale at the local hobby store for .49 cents...

I degrease and use orange fingernail polish from Wal-Mart that was about 1.77. The color on the bottle is "mango."

I thought about doing that but didn't find the color I wanted, and shopping for fingernail polish without a female in tow garners quite a few odd looks....I think I'll take my daughter with me. Michael's was a bust, no real paint just paint pens. I tried Target, and Wal-mart as well with the same result. I had the fingernail paint idea while at Target. I gave up after that and hit up a few shops looking for an actual replacement, didn't find anything for an M&P, just Glock sights.

I use the paint pens from Michael's. I do one coat of white followed by a coat of orange. I like the paint pens because they're fast and make touching up the front sight easy, if you shoot a lot. I've found that it painting is much easier on a serrated and ramped front sight (Heinie).

I didn't even bother putting a base coat of white on first just applied the Krylon fluorescent orange via paint pen on a serrated front sight (3 coats). It has lasted several months now with little need for touchup. Tried applying the paint pen and paint with small brush on a non serrated front sight, didn't work very well.

I've used Sharpie Pain Pens (orange) before with decent results.

F2S - are you using the fine or medium tip?

Thanks!

Yellow is extra fine, unintentionally (was in the same slot as the "fine" and I grabbed the only unopened one without verifying the tip), but it isn't bad.
The Orange is fine tipped.

I'm not saying that they are the bestest, just what I used.

Faliure,

Any tips for painting the non-serrated sights? I have no problem painting my heinies but every time I try to paint the factory night sight on my m&p I have to fight off a strong desire to club a baby seal. The paint from the sharpie paint pens (same as in your picture) get everywhere including over the tritium.

Thanks for any tips

Serpico,

I use these:

http://fortsidneyhobby.com/Microbrush-MHS10-Superfine-Brushes-10-MCBR1002.htm

They make painting the front site easy as pie if you're using model paint etc. I'll shoot a photo of my front site when I get home.

I found them locally at a Hobby Lobby.

Except for the little drop right at 12:00 it's nearly perfect. The microbrushes make it really easy.

Sorry for the poor picture quality.

BOM,

I will give that a try. Those applicators look like the ticket. Thanks.

Very nice!! I was going to recommend the most obnoxious orange finger nail polish but I'm going to try your method next.

I first lay a base coat of white Liquid Paper, and then use Testor's Neon Green gloss model paint. It's been a good combination for me.

Best, Jon
