Week 170: 99 Drill

Results may be posted until July 24th, 2016.

Designed by: JodyH
Range: 7-15 yards
Target: 3x5 or 4x6 card, see below for details
Start Position: holstered, hands relaxed at sides, see below for details
Rounds Fired: 99

This was developed as a way to practice fundamentals (marksmanship at speed, draws, and reloads) with limited time and ammunition, using a repetitive "block training" format.

7 yards, 2.5sec PAR: draw and shoot three (10 times, total 30 rounds)
7 yards, 5.0sec PAR: draw, fire one, reload, fire two (10 times, total 30 rounds)
10 yards, 3.5sec PAR: draw and shoot three (10 times, total 30 rounds)
15 yards, 5.0sec PAR: draw and shoot three (3 times, total 9 rounds)

Either 4×6″ or 3×5″ cards can be used as targets. The 3×5 version is obviously significantly more difficult. All shots must be fired before the end of the PAR time; shots fired after the PAR count as misses.

The PAR times are based on running the drill from concealment or a legitimate retention holster. If you want to use an open top style range/competition holster, deduct one half second from the PAR for each string draw string and one second for the draw & reload string (2.0, 4.0, 3.0, and 4.5). If your range does not allow drawing from a holster, reduce the PAR for each string of fire by one second (so 1.5, 4.0, 2.5, and 4.0) and shoot it from a ready position.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Equipment used (pistol, holster, optional concealment garment if one was used)
Target used
Score for each of the four strings of fire
Total score

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

IMO one of the best all around training drills for speed with precision.

Equipment: Glock 17 MOS with Vortex Venom RDS, JMCK AIWB with a t-shirt cover.
Target: 4x6 card at 7 yds.
Score: 21, 17, 24, 7
Total: 69.

Still getting used finding that red dot...still kinda weird.

I shot 27, 25, 27, 6 for an 85 today on 4x6 cards.
RTF2 G19 with KKM barrel and compensator.

But open OWB. Shot from memory and notes, didn't realize it was a concealed standard.

Will probably stay with the basic pars till I clean it.

Shot this with my CZ 75 SP01

String 1: 13/30
String 2: 9/30
String 3: 15/30
String 4: 4/9
Total = 41/99

Main observation is I can't shoot that fast yet on 3x5 cards. All my shots going low too, and I think it's due to milking with my strong hand. Need to practice gripping harder in both live and dry fire. Note all shots basically low....
8796

Other observations included that trying to get more time on the trigger by rushing reloads is a recipe for disaster, as I fumbled a couple of those. Related lesson is to do more reloads in dry fire.

Last observation is that I shouldn't use the turning target system, but use a shot timer. That way I can try to guarantee my shots more and just record shots over time instead of rushing near the end and slinging bad shots down range.

Finally, I was able to get 1 string of 3 hits on the 15 yards, but then bombed the rest. Really need to make sure I get a good sight picture/alignment on those far shots... and not milk the pistol.

Glock 17 gen 3 chopped and stippled from a CCC Shaggy concealed under a t-shirt
4x6 card

7yds, 2.5 sec par - 21/30
7yds, 1r2 5 sec par - 23/30
10yds, 3.5 sec par - 24/30
15yds, 5 sec par - 5/9

Total Score - 73

My PR is a 78 when i was shooting p series cz's. I left a lot of points on the board by doing some dumb things such as milking the grip a few times and losing concentration on the front sight. I felt really good going in and felt i was going for a new PR but held myself back by the aforementioned mistakes. I usually struggle with the first stage on the 2.5 par. Today was no exception as it was my worst stage, but I made the par on all but one string, all the points lost were just sloppy shooting on my part. Going into my 6th run on stage 1 I was only 2 points down, then I lost concentration and dropped 7 points in the next 4 runs. I also shot poorly on 2 of the 15 yd runs. There is no reason for me to not clean the 15 yd stage. Overall I love the 99 drill and it is one of my favorites that I use to track performance.

On another note, I just got my frame back from being chopped to 19 length and stippled. This was the maiden voyage and all was well. It is phenomenal! With the undercut, I don't even notice the chop. It feels and handles like a 17 still only with the added advantage of concealing like a 19. Definitely glad I had it done.

Shot with a CZ P07 using a JR Customs AIWB CDA-II concealed with a T-shirt. Total score 47.. with 4x6 cards.

I wasn't sure if it was a slide lock reload on the second string, but that's how I did it and i had the hardest time keeping up

String 1 16/30
String 2 15/30
String 3 16/30
String 4 0/9

I have to use my support hand to drop the slide. That slide release is hard to reach with the strong hand (like a 1911). One of the reasons I going to get rid of mine.

That's exactly what I was needing to do. I'm going to keep practicing and see how it works out. Might pick up another da/sa compact if I get the opportunity and compare both. Please feel free to suggest anything :)

Bag of suck.

P320 in uspsa production gear. Target was a 3x5. Maybe next time I'll use 4 3x5's..

So this drill sounds easy lol
This is the first time EVER that I got ANY type of match pressure in practice. I wanted to clean it so bad. At the end of the first string I had some adrenaline and a little bit of shakes! The three misses was the last string! Jerked all three shots :(

I feel like the par times are very generous (and yet I still failed miserably)
First string were basically all under 2.0
Second string were all 3-3.4 trying not to rush
Third string were all high 2's
Fourth string were all mid 3's.
I'm not good with par times and I was rushing baaad.

EDIT: just saw that these par times were from concealed. Whoops.

Pictures in order of strings:

Used a Glock 23 w/9mm conversion, vest and a Safariland ALS holster
Target was a 3x5 card
Score: Not gonna say. Let us just leave it at I did substantially worse than the first time we did this so basically wasted 99 rounds today
Things I noticed: I guess they were not really wasted rounds. I usd the pistol I thought was most reliable and the holster I trustd most. I had a devil of a time with the draw, kept getting tangled in the cover garment and the stock Glock beavertail insert. Also forvthe first time with this pistol the trigger kept locking up on the safety. In other words I did not get the safety dpressed before pressing the trigger. The trigger on this pistol is bone stock. I have had this on a couple other Glocks. The trigger safety tab had little raisd sections on the tab that helped keep it from depressing fully. Once those bumps were smoothed off everything worked fine. This trigger tab does not have the bumps so not sure what is going on. Bottom line is I am very very happy to have found these problems on the range and not on "da streets".

Used this as my practice session at the range early in the morning after my night shift on 7/8/16.

Used a Gen4 G19 in a Blade-Tec Phantom IWB holster concealed by a vest.

Target: 3X5 index card

String 1: 21 hits
String 2: 27 hits
String 3: 22 hits
String 4: 5 hits

Total: 75 hits

This is what I gathered from the day: the first string allowed me to warm up, on the second string I made good use of the par time, however on the third and fourth strings I unnecessarily pushed my speed.

Very good drill that kicked my butt on the 3x5 cards!

G4G19, Fricke holsters, appendix, and cover t-shirt. Apparently, this pistol also has a very nice big orange front sight, although I forgot about it several times. I could hear Tom Givens yelling at me :)

Targets were four 3x5 cards.

String 1: 20/30
String 2: 21/30
String 3: 22/30
String 4: 6/9

Total: 69/99

Equipment used
Glock 34 JMCK AWIB concealed under t shirt.

String1 16/30
String2 18/30
String3 17/30
String4 4/9
Total 55/90

Par times still to fast fro me now usually I would only get off two shots under par time.
Flubbed several reloads to kill me on string 2, I need to start hitting those hard again.
I started looking over my sights on string 3 and had to correct that quickly.
