I'm not that familiar with Hawthorne boots as I am with Viberg, Truman, Whites, Nicks, Redwing, and Wolverine. But those look like some pretty hearty boots.

Thank you so sir. These are made by a Canadian company called Viberg. They are called their Service Boot and they are on they're 2030 Last. Personally I tend to think they make the best looking boot in this particular category.

Hathorn is owned by Whites, and is a step below them in overall quality and toughness from what my dealer says. Also a step below in price. Whites just weren't in my budget. I used to wear Red Wing Loggers, but the quality seems to have cratered the past decade or more. They used to last quite a long time, the last two pair I had, one lasted less than 2 years I believe, the last one less than a year. My dealer got me a full refund and I applied it to the Hathorns. Ive had them rebuilt once, and they need it again. If I took better care of them theyd last longer. I seem to be hard on boots though, or was when I was working and out in the hills all the time.

Dress pants, that's black Levis isn't it? To be worn with your good dress cowboy boots.

I did have a couple pair of Rios of Mercedes handmade boots. Both were gifts. Sadly, I wore them both out. They don't give much ankle support though, I broke my foot once in the Rios boots stepping on a rock that rolled.

Ah, I wasn't aware of that or it's possible I heard that and forgotten. I came close to purchasing some from Whites but after buying that pair from Viberg I would probably buy another from Viberg instead of one from Whites. I've heard that about Redwing although the two Beckmans I purchased a few years ago I am pretty happy with those. Hard to break in though, but darn tough boots. I did wear them for about an hour for a few weeks straight every. Day before wearing for the full day however. Still sore after wearing the full day and mostly I was sitting down.

Not always, and you would be surprised possibly with what I wear with jeans. Besides all of the boots I've shown so far are actually more casual than dress.

I was pretty sore for a couple weeks breaking in the Hathorns, but after that, they've been some of the most comfortable boots Ive ever worn. Theres lots of sharp, pokey, prickly stuff where I live. I tend to wear my boots even with shorts. I get some funny looks, but I absolutely hate getting cactus spines or other sharp things stuck in my feet.

Having spent a fair amount of time looking over boots just like those I'd have to agree. I do have a pair of color #8 Alden cap toes on the Grant last that are decent but they're on the nicer side of things. I have a pair of Taylor Stitch X Rancourt plain toes that are a similar profile but the Vibergs seem to look a bit nicer from most angles.

For the most part a majority of the boots and shoes I wear are very easy to break in. I do often wear them on carpet for about an hour for three days first however. This, the leather, the fact that they fit all do help of course.

I too have a few shoes and boots from Alden and Rancourt is my favorite with regards to handsewns. Truman is good competition for Viberg I think, but here again in my opinion Viberg just wins and it's mostly because I like the 2030 Last.

My preference when it comes to most shoes and or boots are the English Shoemakers. Here's a couple more examples from one in particular. Crockett and Jones really knows how to make a great boot. One in cordovan and one in scotch grain.

Balmoral and Oxford are generally interchangeable and refer to closed lacing. This in contrast to Derby or Blucher which has open lacing. Balmorals are generally considered more formal than bluchers.

When I am doing pretty much anything that requires something beyond flip-flops, I wear hikers.

Asolos are my preferred boot by a wide margin. Back when Vasque boots were made in Italy, I wore through a bunch of those.

For many years though, cowboy boots were mostly what I wore.

I figure nobody wanted to see a dirty pair of Asolos.

Therefore, I took a shot of my Olathes and Milt Sparks gun rig that I got married in. I am fortunate to say that it all still fits today.

Actually I really don't care what anyone thinks with regards to what I own. I have a few passions and this is one of them. I like really nice footwear, dressing nice, and putting my best foot forward puts a smile on my face. So if you or anyone else for that matter doesn't like it that's just fine with me. But if there were some here that wished to share in the same passion that would have been just fine, but if not that would have been Ok too.

However it appears there are some here that would rather act like children instead of adults. I initially joined the site because I was curious and had a desire to check it out. I may have joined and posted to quickly. Because frankly I have no need nor no desire to deal with a bunch of people who want to act like bunch of children. And apparently a very thin skin.

Dddrees,

Some pretty serious dudes on this board seem to like nice shoes too. I suggest you not be so sensitive to either jokes or differing/negative opinions. I fall somewhere in the middle personally, and have spent too much money on things like shoes over the years. Personally, I'd rather spend money on more lasting things, but everyone has their addictions/interests/hobbies/collections. Not to mention differing incomes. Someone once called me a serial killer for collecting parts of women. Did I get offended? Maybe a little, but then I got over it.

Ah man I just bought new boots and wish I'd read this first. The wide toe box is damn near a requirement for me anymore for comfort.

Think I'll suck it up and buy some Salomons anyway...

I can't wear Salomon's. The standard width is too narrow and cause my feet to cramp relatively quickly. Had the Same problem with Merrell's. I wear Keens now. There standard width shoes and boots are wide enough for me.

The 1000 Milers can be recrafted. Personally I wanted a little sleeker toe as the 1000's seem like I could fit a deck of cards above my foot.

Redwing also has a new boot coming on that style that's decent.

Also to consider is the Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill boot, just came out a few weeks ago and had I known I likely woulda went with those as a known quantity over what I got. They're $300 with a danite sole.

In the past Ive had some great Red Wings. I used to buy their loggers. The last couple didn't last very long, the very last pair from 2007 or so lasted less than a year. My boot shop guy said hed had a number of them come back and was considering dropping them because of the longevity issues. He got me a full refund from Red Wing and I went to the Hathorn Smoke Jumpers, which are more like the Red Wings from 25 years ago or more as regards longevity.

Hopefully they've gotten it figured out, or their other models don't have the problems the loggers were having.

Cool, thanks!

I didn't even think of that. Duh,.... :)

The loggers and Smoker Jumpers have been like the super duty 4wd of the boot world for what I usually do in the Rockies, other than super wet or very cold conditions. They have been even more comfortable than tennis shoes for all day wear once broken in and with good impact insoles.

If you like shoes that feel like slippers with really thin soles then you'll like them. I wouldn't recommend walking on rocks, or Legos.

The pair I have are some of the first ones to come out. They may be slightly different now but I don't think so. I've been thinking about a pair of the boots for work.

Looking at grabbing some Redwings as I need a pair of nice boots. I have a pair of mudboots -- Merrels and I have a pair of work boots -- Eccos, but I don't have a pair of crappy weather nice boots that masquerade as causal shoes. The Iron Rangers fit the bill, but I have a few questions:
1. is there something comparable, but cheaper? I've found my size at $265 now.
2. if not, then is the Redwing 'care kit' worth it to keep them in good condition.
3. I heard some QC issues from orionz (IIRC) that they've been a bit less sturdy in the recent past, any changes this year?
4. Any break in advice for straight leather like this?
5. Any need for insoles?

TIA

I've had a pair of Chippewa Apache boots for the past 3 years. I bought them mainly because I didn't feel like paying the price for Red Wings and because I'd heard, admittedly only anecdotally, that Red Wing QC had slipped. The Chippewa's are my daily (non-work) wear from about November through March. I just rub them with some boot oil about once a year and then get to wearing them. They've trekked everywhere from the suburbs of Virginia to the black forest in Germany. They are somewhat water resistant when the boot oil is fresh, and though a bit stiff in the beginning, soften up quite nicely.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately, the ones I like (Chippewa

I think it depends on what comes in them, but old school boots are way more comfortable with decent insoles. Ive used the Spenco impact insoles in most of my loggers. They make long hikes and working on my feet all day a non-issue for my feet.

Hmm, I may be confusing a different type. The Spencos Ive been using cost about $20 at the local boot shop. They wear down in a year or two depending on how hard you wear them, but when I tried other types (or the cheaper version), or no insoles, the difference was very apparent.

My dad used to use orthotic insoles in most of his shoes, he gave me a box of tennis shoe factory OEM insoles, they worked really well in boots also.

Edit: These might be the ones, I may have been paying too much at the boot shop. Mine look like this I think. The little gel pad under the heel helps, as does the different materials at different parts.

Yep, that was the right ones. Polysorb. There may be better ones, but those have worked well for me for quite a long time.

In the 90s, I thought Id give my feet a break from my (at the time) Red Wing Loggers, so wore some tennis shoes for a day or two. My loggers were more comfortable. Only downside is they are heavy, but in the west and southwest, rocky mountain stuff, I absolutely love them(currently Hathron Smoke Jumpers). Very solid ankle support in loose shale slides and loose rocky ground, cactus and other junk doesn't bother them.

I'm a bizarre Hobbit with high arches. I'm probably a 7.5 EEE, but I fit in an 8D well because the volume is close and allows for the Spencos to fit beneath my feet without causing me trouble. The ankle area is probably going to take longer to break in over the sole. YMMV

This site may allow this type of thing but I have no desire to waste my time.

That's cool, another enthusiast.

But we differ on the other point you made. I look at this as a matter of civility and just simply acting like an adult. You can try to rationalize it anyway you wish too, but I don't find any excuse for it.

My friend, I don't know if you are still around, but these posts are more telling than the shoes. Personally the shoes, while nice, are not my taste and my footwear may not be what you prefer, but lets not bunch up our panties over it. I take diversity as a good thing and I really hope no one here stops being who they are, within the bounds of civility or common courtesy. Having said that, if we cannot find humor about our differences or within ourselves, life comes to the point where we seem to be this day in age with all the correctness that is killing us as people.

I lived in these boots when they released; they softened up quick. That kudu leather upper is particularly supple.

I discovered Allen Edmonds a few years back; the brand slowly took over my closet. I really like the Dainite rubber sole option for their dress shoes.

I didn't think they were that stiff to begin with. I never felt the need for any kind of insert. Definitely not a month; I'd say about a week.

*sad horn* looking at the price points, maybe I should've gone the AE route. Time will tell.

A few days breaking them in without Spencos made me really appreciate the last 30 minutes with the Spencos in. Thanks!

I got the Spenco polysorb heavy duty insoles. Didn't see the vibrams. Got me curious. Check out the Allen Edmunds too. I hear they break in easier.

I'm not worried about a mean break-in as I used to buy rainbow sandals. Gotta earn that fit. I meant which of these:

cork rubber

I'm looking at the redwing moc toe roughneck or equivalent Chippewa but I need at least an 11 wide. Anybody with wide flat feet use them? Or should I just try Russell ? Before my feet went flat I loved the spenco polysorb in my jungle boots! Now I use the spenco ortho insoles

Oh, yes, sorry. Cork and it's really impressive. It seems super anhydrous and grippy given the lack of treads.

Good deal. The Vibram ones don't come in wide sizes anyways.

OK, I thought those Normandy boots, look like some dandy boots that I might be able to use. Kinda workbootish, but dandy without being over the top dandy. Provided they have 4E sizing, maybe I'm in. $350? Seriously, or are you guys getting them somewhere else for less?

$350 American dollars? Good grief. I paid less than that for my first street legal motorcycle.

That's why I went with the Redwings for sub $300. I've never spent more than $150 for shoes, but I've been going through a "purge and replace" mission.

I've got too much cheap crap and I decided to sell, give away and throw away so I can replace it with some quality gear that'll last. Less crap that looks good and lasts me a long time is better for my mental state.

Scratch that, they were on sale at Nordstrom not long ago but not likely in your size.

Shoebank.com is the AE seconds/sale site. The Normandy is $289 there.

Colorado. I honestly despise shoes and don't wear them outside work until it gets below freezing or I am absolutely required to do so.

When I'm at work I wear these

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w75/Tom_Morford/image_zpstxqy7gtz.jpeg (http://s173.photobucket.com/user/Tom_Morford/media/image_zpstxqy7gtz.jpeg.html)

They're Belleville 700 Duty Boots. They're very similar to the old summer Matterhorns. They have a good polyurethane midsole that cushions them like a running shoe and a Vibram outsole. My job requires me to be on my feet in varying terrain (mountainous to prairie to urban) 6 to 8 hours of my shift in all weather conditions and these boots have given me the best combination of comfort and durability of everything I've tried. (Rocky's, Vasques, Tevas).

My feet don't get cold so even in the wither I just add a thin cotton sock and I'm fine even with my feet in the snow.

Edit: this pair is 4 years old so they hold up well

That was shot from my phone with the light of then tv and one table lamp 15 feet away, with a pug in my lap. Canon's wi-fi is awesome and the 5D4 seems to focus in the dark.

An update on my Redwings as I've had them for 3 weeks. The ankle area is softening up and getting comfortable. The tread feels great, but I may have to trade the Spencos in for a model up already. These are certainly tough on the feet to break in. I love the cork bottoms in this fall/winter wet/leafy time. They are smooth, quiet, flexible and don't slip.

Any thoughts on inserts as I'll be moving to a new pair by December at this rate.

No worries. I think I just should've worn them barefoot in the house for a week before I took them outside with the Spencos. Plus, I'm barefoot 5-8 hours a day, so it's always a shock.

You're barefoot that often and long and need insoles? I know myself and a few others who've gone to minimalist shoes have been able to lose the insoles all together.
