No worries. I think I just should've worn them barefoot in the house for a week before I took them outside with the Spencos. Plus, I'm barefoot 5-8 hours a day, so it's always a shock.

Your feets are spoiled from running around nekid so much.

I like flip flops or slippers around the house or to feed the birds in the morning, but much more than that and boots go on. Too much pointy, stabby pokey stuff around here. Little prickly pear cactus, the needle-like tumbleweed thorns that seem to find a way into my feet and other assorted nasties have made me wear my loggers or smoke jumpers even with shorts. And bugs. Like scorpions and black widows. Rattly snakes. Boots. Romp-em, stomp-em, make-em flat and dead boots. Havent stomped any snakes, but getting hit in a boot seems preferable to flip flops or anything light weight.

You're barefoot that often and long and need insoles? I know myself and a few others who've gone to minimalist shoes have been able to lose the insoles all together.

I've never needed insoles before, but there is a rise and the cork, although terrific for all terrains so far, is not cushiony nor is the interior of the shoe. I too wear minimalist shoes when it comes to sneakers.

I've been wearing mine with medium wool socks and that seems to help. Sure they don't have much cushion, but neither do my dress shoes. I already have Matterhorns for stomping and Gore Tex Merrels for lighter duty. Has the footbed molded to the shape of your foot yet?

After a good bit of research on that subject, I find myself really, really wanting to try out a pair of minimalist type boots, and have settled on trying a pair of double soled Arrow moccasins. Anyone ever tried anything like that?

Ok just curious. My boots have already started conforming to my feet after less than a week. The real challenge was sizing them. I had to order 8 different pairs before I got a set that fit correctly (ended up 2 whole sizes smaller and 2E). Luckily, I didn't give up cuz I dig these for a casual boot.

On a serious note, how'd you break them in? I just wore them in. Like I said, the everything is wearing in fine other than the inside/insole.

I don't recall having the break in the insoles, though that could be just that its been a while and it wasn't much of an issue if at all. No telling how your feet work in your boots though. Mt Hathorn Smoke Jumpers were a bugger to break in, but 2-3 weeks and they started getting decent, then have been great ever since, even after sending them back for a rebuild once, the new break in wasn't as much as the first time for some reason.

Some people used to get their new boots soaking wet the first day, then walk them dry to break them in. I never tried it. Youd want to oil them after drying them out if you try it. The newer generations of boots probably wouldn't take well to that, but ones made in traditional methods and materials may.

Laced em up tight with medium thickness to thick wool socks and walked about a half mile in them on the first day to kickstart the break-in period. I'm probably around 220 lb though so the weight likely does speed up the process. I would guess the extra insoles are probably not going to allow the footbed to form to your foot as well than without them. Not my area of expertise though so IDK.

Ugg Rohnan. One of my favorite, unlikely boots. GYW and waterproof. Now discontinued but I snagged 2 pair before they went. More comfortable than my RW, Aldens, and AEdmonds.

I need some old wives tails on how to break in boots. My Wesco's came in Tuesday and I've wore them yesterday and today. They hurt so bad my left foot is actually bleeding. I usually go walk around in a creek for a while and that helps speed things up..but I don't think these are waterproof and with a sad face price tag I'm not wanting to willingly soak the inside of my new boots.
They are so stiff and tight they squeak like I'm walking around in a pair of dirtbike riding boots.

Only think I've done is oiled then.

are you sure they fit right? I mean really sure.

I'm of the mind that no footwear should hurt, even fresh out of the box. I have a frankly ridiculous collection of shoes, boots etc.

No water based breaking in please - water is not good for leather period, even if it is good stuff properly treated/protected. since the water is loosening the internal grain structure of the leather itself, it is also deteriorating it.

Here's the model page from Justin: https://www.justinoriginalworkboots.com/footwear/men/product-features/composite-toe/WK4625

Technically comp toe, not steel, but works for what I need them for. I find them to be very comfortable to wear all day and fit was great (1/2 size larger than usual, which is different that other Justins, but whatever) right out of the box. No pain or break-in.

Danners EE isn't wide enough for me. I know they make wider for some models such as the Arcadia but I don't think they do for the mountain lights. I wish Danner and salomon made wider sizes. I'm going to try some red wings next.

Is that the tactical iteration of Salomon's Quest 4D? If so, wonderful boot. I'm on my third pair. I've backpacked many miles in mine and even used them on some mixed climbs with strap-on crampons.

Necropost. Follow-up on the Salomon boot recommendation. I bought a pair of 4D Quest boots about 4 months ago, and have worn them enough to form an opinion. I really like them. I’ve been looking for boots like this for a long time! Lightweight, comfortable, and my feet feel good after a long day standing. Next to try are some of the Salomon shoes and trail runners. Thanks!

J. Crew and Brooks Brothers both have Aldens if thats an option. I would highly recommend these, I really like my Alpine Grain WTB from J. No BB. I love LWB's and that would fill things out for me more than anything else would. I've got two pairs of boots in the pipe still and another might be too much. Then again I pretty much only wear boots or Superstars so... Hell, my highschool senior trip we went to the Outer Banks and I wore 1460's the whole time.

Lucchese full quill. They started life with wide “boat paddle” toes. After wearing them for 6+ years and getting them resoled twice, I decided to do something different. Had a local custom boot guy here in Houston measure my feet and cut these down to fit accordingly with a new narrower toe and walking heel.

Lucchese boots are a very good investment, always keep you looking sharp and you never have to worry about matching your socks. Looking forward to wearing these boots for a very long time!

They seem to be. With Division Road and Brooklyn Clothing doing some awesome makeups Viberg is a little more unique than Alden. For me the brands offer different things. If Viberg had a wingtip boot in color #8 shell I'd still likely get the Alden, they just seem better suited for that. Alden covers the more refined side of things for me and Viberg fits more in the jeans and t-shirt realm, with loads of overlap between. I've not been disappointed with either and will buy more from both makers.

I'll have to take a look at those two places. I really like the Service Boot in Color 8 like this: https://viberg.com/collections/footwear/products/service-boot-colour-8-shell-cordovan?variant=7502967341086

Once you find your true size, not athletic shoe size, it's relatively easy to get in the ballpark off the bat. Once you get anything on a common last you're likely to be set. There are also some very awesome retailers that will help customers out and take returns if you're on the fence.

What do your feet measure currently? What's your zip code?

ThanksI suggest you find an AE store near you and get sized. The specific shoe I wanted I had to order 1.5 sizes smaller than what the brannock said due to the last. Letting the person sizing you know which shoe/boot you are looking for will be best for finding the right size.

This is my 4th pair on the Leo last. I think it fits pretty similar to the AE 1757 at 1/2 down. Both lasts give me enough room up front with a nice snug heel fit. My Higgins Mills are a 9D, these are 8.5D.

need some shoe help...

I'm looking for a
1)dressy-ish
2) preferably slip-on
3) with relatively wide toe-box
4) in brown leather.

Yes, I know that's all very specific. If I had to sacrifice one of those criteria, it'd be the slip-on aspect, but I'd really prefer to have them slip on/loafer style.

I'm currently wearing something similar to this (https://www.colehaan.com/tucker-venetian-loafer-french-roast/C04059.html), and I hate it. The only pro of the thing is the fact that it's a slip-on. The look is way too corrective-shoe, and too casual, for what I'd like. I've tried other Cole Haans and just found them all too damn narrow to the point of painful.

Price range?

I almost don't care at this point, but something sub-$200 would be good, sub-$150 would be ideal. While I'm in "management" it is a construction company and there may be situations where they get more aggresively damaged/worn and I'd prefer not to have to keep dropping $200 a few times a year. I have boots for when I *know* I need them, but sometimes shit happens in this business.

Multiple slip on styles in the sub 200 space. many styles avail in wide sizes which would presumably address the toe box issue.

I recommend Thursday Boots. I work in medical sales, so I am constantly on asphalt or standing on hospital floors. Sub $100 dress shoes wear out in less than a year and aren’t waterproof for rainy/snowy days. I looked for a long time to find a dress boot that was waterproof and would work with a mainly business casual attire but could also step up to a suit on rare occasion.

AE, Alden, Viberg are all great but I have 4 kids, a mortgage, and am the sole breadwinner. Thursday’s met my budget needs at $199 and for what you get, I couldn’t be more pleased. Goodyear welted so they can be re-soled when the time comes, well crafted, and good leather quality.

I got these: www.thursdayboots.com/products/mens-brown-captain?collection=boots

They have slip on Chelsea style also. They run about a half size smaller than tennis shoes.

I am very frugal and spent almost a year doing research, reading reviews, and even watched a video of a shoe cobbler taking them apart and discussing how they compare to more expensive brands before I took the plunge. Sad I know...but I am convinced that for a new shoe/boot, you cannot beat their prices for how well they are made. YMMV.

While I love my old school boots - I’ve not found anything that is as comfortable, durable, and usable as the Altama OTBs. For me the low-top versions are perfect. Here you can see my first pair on the left, worn almost daily for 3-years, including in salt and snow. On the right a new pair that has been worn twice.

And recently Altama did a made in limited run in Woodland camo which are made in the USA. So yea, I had to have me a pair of those.

Well damn, I ended up buying the suede Pattons I linked up thread. Right after that AE had 20% off everything so I couldn't resist. It's the same last as HM but seems to be a looser fit. Overall I like them but not as much as I thought I would. At the time I didn't see any suede options for the HM. Is there a page for the trunk show? I couldn't find anything.
Not that I'm going to buy but I might as well look, right? [emoji41]

After nearly a year of my AE Higgins Mill sitting in the closet gathering dust, I brought them into the local AE store just before Christmas to ask what might be done about both tongues slipping inboard within 2 minutes of putting them on.... Maybe I wasn't tying them correctly? Different laces?... Dunno.

The store guy said he didn't know what could be going on, but he shipped the boots back to AE for inspection.

In mid January I received them back with new laces and they had sewn the side of the tongue to the side of the boot. They did it in a place where the stitches overlapped with existing stitches on the upper, so, no way to tell from looking at them that this had been done.

Problem solved! I wish I had taken them in sooner, but, I'm glad I did. Two thumbs up for AE CS.

maybe some of you shoe guys can help with this...

I'm wanting a pair of BASS Weejuns because:reasons. There are a couple of versions I'm interested in, and I seem to be getting nowhere. I went to the local "outlet" store to find that they appeared to be in the midst of either a move or shutting down, and selection was shit. Then I ordered a couple of models/sizes online based on my limited sizing experience at the outlet store only to have them cancel part of the order and then continuously email me to tell me that the balance of the order is on backorder.

I see some things listed on Amazon but the sizing options have me suspect as to what I'd be getting if I ordered from there.

Any ideas where I can find some in-stock that would also allow for returns if I order two sizes of two models and then return 3 of them?

They have the same backorder issue. It's effectively where I ordered from the first time.

I suspect as they moved their manufacturing offshore, supply chain issues are rearing their heads.

Zappos is easy peasy re shipping/returns. I acknowledge that Bass is not a listed brand but there are several functional equivalents.

Way too many new boots to update with all at once. Just got a pair of Viberg Boondockers in hunter green rough out though and really digging them. They might be my favorites here soon enough.

Got a few pairs, figured out which ones fit, but now the secondary probablem is a total lack of traction on the leather soles. The heel is rubberized but the sole is all leather and SLICK which isn't going to work for me.

I'm considering these guys but I'm still not really happy about the whole thing as I really wanted the actual Weejuns.

I *don't* want the rubber sole look from the side but I'd like to find a pair of loafers that has the leather-look on the side but a rubber insert for traction from underneath. Looking for something "shiny" too. Probably need a wide 2ee width. Not looking to spend more than $200, prefer more like $150 range.

Yes, that's just the ones with a combination sole. They have others with rubber soles also. One thing I can tell you is, they do offer an honest to God EE or EEE (what I need) and their shoes are well-made. So if they have one that you like and fits you well in your size, it should be a good option.

When I hear people who want a rubber sole for traction, shinable and available in wide. I think about most of the agents, particularly USSS, with whom I have worked as they are in suits more than anybody these days.I make all of these recommendations based on my time as a salesman at Macy's ( 7+ years), a sales rep for a Fortune 100 company (2 years), a mall jewelry salesman (1 year) and as an atty for the last 28 years, 23 of which in federal service.

Solution 1 is to buy whatever you like and have a rubber sole/piece of rubber- put on/sewn/glued or combination thereof by a cobbler. This is often the most costly route. Until recently, if you wanted a shoe that was would really take a shine, had style and could give you enough traction to run and fight in, this is what had to be done.

Soulution 2. Is to buy something that is shinable, stylish and has a traction oriented sole from jump street. This is what the vast majority of agents now do, particularly since Allen Edmonds can now be had with combo and dainite soles.

I have extrapolated from lace ups to loafers for you stated needs. Brands listed below are in order of ascending quality to your pricepoint of 200.00. Finally, at the expense of stating the obvious, if you find what you like, buy at least two. Rotating between two pairs will make the shoes last much longer than wearing one pair until failure, resole point etc. and then buying another.

Rockport/Ecco/Allen Edmond.

Great advice on Allen Edmond with the dainite soles. I love both pairs I have, and will get more.

I'm not involved in LE, but I do appreciate a dress shoe with some good traction. A long time ago I was involved in a couple of donnybrooks while wearing leather-soled boots, and it was a unwelcome disadvantage. I avoid such events now, but I still have a strong aversion to slippery footwear.

Ordered two pairs of these in supposedly two different colors. With them on my feet I could barely distinguish the difference!

Not as shiny as I’d like either but I suppose I can shine them myself.

And of course it appears that what I may require is a 10w...

I am told that Saphir brand is excellent for a shoe cream but I have not tired it yet.

Another shoe life extension habit beyond never wearing the same shoe 2x in a row unless on the road I picked up long ago was to the wear the shoe until you can just see where the heal is going to start wearing down based on your gait. Then put on plastic heel taps over that wear spot.

I have 20+ year old Allen Edmond's that were second hand when I got them that have held up just fine heel wise using that approach. I am now using the same with great success on some Red Wing an Wolverine boots. I would think that heal protection will be critical on a rubber healed shoe that is not easily recraftable.

Is it even worth trying to get a shine into shoes that start out from the factory as pretty “matte” looking? Or should I continue my seemingly fruitless quest for shiny penny loafers in a dark brown that have a decent looking sole but also enough traction to keep me upright?

orionz06
09-14-2020, 07:16 AM
You can certainly get some level of shine, all depends on how much and if it's all over or just the toes.

As far as traction... Rancourt or Oak Street Bootmakers might be worth a look, they've got some soles that aren't bad or could take a topper.

YMMV.

Thanks for this post. I ordered the Captain boots in brown this morning. Hoping this does not render me a hipster...

I have been flirting with the nicer boot world for the better part of the year now. A deputy in my office who is even harder core than me about footwear (Alden is his non duty boot of choice) raves about Thursday boots because he can get something that looks good in a jacket and tie when he goes to court but still has a rubber sole such that he can run move and fight in if needed.

I tried on his 12s and they were too small. I would be inclined to go 13 based on that experience thought perhaps I could get by on a 12.5 with a dress sock.

Some random shoe size data points that may or may not be helpful for you. I have been 13 trending to the narrow side in Allen Edmonds dress shoes, Ecco dress shoes,Brooks Adrenaline GTS running shoes And most other shoes for 35+ years.

I purchased a pair of Red Wings iron rangers from Redwing after being measured on their device as a 12 on one foot and a 12 pushing 12 1/2 on the other. I was fit with 11s and told to break them in. I have done so in a satisfactory manner with both those iron wings and a pair of blacksmiths.

I took a chance on a pair of wolverine brand 1000 miler’s at 11 1/2 because I caught them on such a good deal. No real break in as there was with the Red Wings.

I just recently purchased a pair of Danner Bull Runs Lux limited editions on line in 12s after going to-a local store that did not carry the model I was after.

All of that to say-If I had doubts I would buy the two sizes and send the one back that did not fit. Life is short and my time has value.

YMMV. Tell us what u so and why.

I've had these for about a week now and like them. I'm used to chukkas being soft suede and these aren't, though they're not super stiff. I estimate that they're about half-broken in. Ordering them a half-size smaller than my running shoes was about right.

Old Keens finally crapped out, so needed some "hiking shoes".
https://www.salomon.com/en-us/shop/product/outline-gtxr.html#color=48679

Wanted the grey but only the green were available at the time, backordered the grey in case they didn't come in by the time I leave for my trip. Grey turned up in time, so I had the opportunity to get a pic of both side-by-side.

of course, being the snowflake that I am, I really wish the tan sole was on the green and the black on the grey, but ultimately decided to keep the grey. Had the green had the tan sole that would have been my choice.

But overall I *really* like the appearance of the shoe. Here's hoping I don't decide I hate the fit 3 miles in to a hike in Moab in two weeks!

Salomon is a great shoe so long as your foot is not too wide. They have become the footwear of choice by several of the agents and agencies with whom I work (USMS, FBI, DEA, ATF, TFOs assigned to the same) and is displacing the Moab Ventilator in both the low top and mid top categories. Many models are available in Goretex (GTX) and without.

I have had my eye on the green... let me know about comfort and actual water repelling. Hope they work out.

Recently snagged these Rainbow Americanas, which are made in USA. I've been wearing Rainbows for 15 years now, happy they have brought back a USA made version.

Do it.
Immediately after getting these Urban Loggers in and wearing them a few days I ordered a pair of Builder Pros in black roughout for work boots.
I fully expect both pair of boots to be the last boots I'll need to buy (and I'm a very active 51 year old).

Have a couple pairs of those- one for work, the other for riding my MC. Just got the MC ones re-soled by Daub’s in Laconia. They spoke very highly of the construction and came out even more comfortable than when they went in. Work ones will likely go in the near future.

I'm loving them so far. Also thanks for a business name. I wouldn't know where to go if I needed them worked on. I was thinking how cool it would be to get some of the fancy new soles that are out on the Market on them.

Mine fit really well. I think the 8” would be a great duty boot. I have another 6” black pair that I honestly wish I’d tried them as duty boots. I walked a lot on duty. I wore the black pair on a moderate seven mile hike last month and my feet were fine. I wear thicker socks in them.

The only real issue I see for duty would be wet conditions. Your feet and socks will get wet.

Based on a 25 yrs+ association with teachers who weigh 100-300 lbs, from 4' 10'' to 6' 2'', Dansko Clogs are held in very high esteem. Alternating two pairs will get you 5+ years in a typical school environment. (mix of indoor carpeting/concrete flooring.)

Having said that, the bulk of their product is based in the PRC. FWIW.

The other clog shoe that gets lots of love in the teacher community is Birkenstock. The vast majority of lines are made in Germany. They also manufacture in Portugal. Again FWIW.

I just got a pair of their polymer/EVA "Arizona" sandals for Father's Day. Love them as well. Considering something in a closed toe to round out my footwear needs.

I adopted the barefoot/minimalist lifestyle right at a decade ago, even had a couple pairs of Vibram 5 Fingers that mortified my friends but did wonders for my feet and knees. My wife joined in some 5yrs ago, once quality, non-goofy versions became available. These days, even classic Chuck Taylors feel like they're crowding my feet. I definitely have other, heavy duty or task specific shoes, but I live my day to day in various shoes from Xero & Vivo Barefoot.

Vivobarefoot is more transparent on their site-listing country of origin on each item. A random sampling indicates Vietnam as a primary location. In fact, they are affirmatively moving out of the PRC if there website is to be believed. Other sources say they also manufacture in Portugal, Vietnam, China and Ethiopia.

Very intrigued by the graphic shown re the bunching up of the foot. I always kind of thought the wide toe boxes of Keen, New Balance and these "minimalist" brands were more suited to the Wide Foot and Minimalist crowd more generally. Food for thought re a relatively narrow footed guy like myself.

I have a really wide forefoot and struggle to find shoes that fit. Shoes for work are even more challenging to find. Running shoes are a problem because it seems like everything with a wide toe box has zero drop and is very flat. Dress shoes that work tend to look like clown shoes. The struggle is real.

I have two pairs of Lems chukas. They’re really comfortable but they are definitely a casual shoe. They look good with jeans though. They have a dressier shoe but they’re still going to look out of place with nice slacks.

Get your Brannock size and then check r/Goodyearwelt. You should be able to nail your size off the bat with their info. Hell, get me your size and I'll poke around for ya.

so three months later, I finally wandered into a DSW to try and find some new hiking shoes, and thought of this thread and thought I'd find a Brannock and measure my foot.

None to be had! It never even occurred to me that they wouldn't have one, but in visiting the store and realizing that they have everything on the shelf for you to try yourself, I guess there's no reason.

You have to jam your feet in shoes 3 sizes too small to end up like that picture.

I wear zero drop Vans a lot of the time and I fit them to have about 1/2” of space in the end of the shoe and my toes can wiggle and spread out all they want.

The 5-toe or whatever shoes felt very unnatural to me. I didn’t like all the material between my toes and they limited the range of motion of the toes enough that I wasn’t comfortable in them at all.

Shoes aren't supposed to be sized to the toes. The shoes toe "toe check" thing is BS. The shoe should be sized to the ball of the foot, so the room left will be variable.

Yep. Arch length and bend point are how I fit boots. My arch length is 1/2 size longer than my toe length on a Brannock.

I notice that most people who complain about toe problems and conventional footwear are wearing shoes or boots that are too small.

I've had these for about a week now and like them. I'm used to chukkas being soft suede and these aren't, though they're not super stiff. I estimate that they're about half-broken in. Ordering them a half-size smaller than my running shoes was about right.

Thanks. They look nice, but they don't have a style I want right now plus, it says they're manufactured in China, which I'm not really willing to do. Budget isn't the driver here but I do like the idea of a nice boot at a reasonable price. My preference is made in the US. These are actually pretty ideal, except they don't come in wide sizes (I need a EEE or wider):
